Al Horford

I've been seeing all these threads about how we should get Josh Smith, no, but let's try to get someone else from the Hawks, Al Horford.

                                                            From the SBN Scouting Report

Assets
  • A strong, long, hard-working power player. Fearless in the paint and team-first. Takes smart, high-percentage shots and has an emerging offensive repertoire.
Flaws
  • Despite his long limbs he's slightly undersized for an NBA pivot. His defense is good but he could be even more of a stopper. Could pass the ball a little more

With the loss of Amare Stoudemire, a hole is left at the PF position, Horford would be the perfect man in my opinion. He has a high BB IQ, a good defender, and a guy other teams are afraid of.

I know what you are thinking, how do we get him to come here? Why would he leave the Hawks

He would leave the Hawks because they force him to play Center, however, he doesn't like playing Center as he's a natural PF. He is also being lowballed by management, who don't want to pay Jamal Crawford or Al Horford, but they pay Joe Johnson $130 mill. If you look at our options for PF right now you will see names like David West, among others, but IMO Al Horford would be the best option, better than Josh Smith too. What do you guys think?

Horford and Smith are both solid in their won rights; Smith is the explosive, athletic shotblocking force

and Horford is the high IQ, crafty, intelligent, and more natural PF with very high mobility, good defense as a C, but could be even better as a four man.

I like Horford than Smith

Horford’s game doesn’t defend much on his physical abilities. He is a smart player and a lot of room for improvement. And based on his current performances, he will definitely a future Dwight Howard, a smarter and refined version.

uh no...Howard and Horford have very little similarity in their games.

Howard succeeds with ridiculous athleticism and Horford plays more of a below the rim game. Plus Howard and Horford are probably about the same age since Dwight skipped college. I want Horford in a Suns uni, but he’s not on Dwight’s level and he never will be.

I also like Horford better than Smith

The likelihood of Phoenix having a “chance” to acquire him is:
1. Him not signing any extension offered by Hawks
2. The Hawks suffer another 2nd round playoff exit, will be better if it is a sweep
3. Him playing the majority of his minutes at the center position

4. The hawks renouncing his rights

he’s a restricted free agent so if the hawks want him they can keep him

by DaveJD on Sep 9, 2010 8:23 AM MDT up reply actions

For another year. Anything more and he has to agree.

by waxmonkey on Sep 9, 2010 8:41 AM MDT up reply actions

And the Hawks have to match the largest offer sheet (if Horford accepts it).

by waxmonkey on Sep 9, 2010 8:57 AM MDT up reply actions

absolutely agree with this

on several threads, we’ve spent as much time talking about Horford as Smith.

Horford is definitely a better player, but he’s also less available and much less likely to be acquired.

He is a restricted free agent next summer. If the collective bargaining agreement expires, then there’s no way to offer him a contract until we see what that’s like.

Acquiring him via trade before that is almost impossible. Atlanta has no reason to trade a guy like that who is still on his rookie deal. They couldn’t possibly get enough value in return.

Hawks don't even really have any bad contracts we could offer to take back as well

Other than JJ’s huge deal which i don’t want. The only guys on their roster who are overpaid and not expiring (to my knowledge) are Marvin Williams and Pachulia, but even then they’re only on deals around the MLE mark so i can’t see the hawks wanting to dump them so badly they’d give up Horford.

by DaveJD on Sep 9, 2010 8:26 AM MDT up reply actions

yet if we could drive up Horford's price

then Josh Smith becomes more and more available.

If I had to give up one of them, it would be RoLo.

Will make Frye play C and have Dwayne Jones play back up C.

Don't trade Dudley!

by Beavis 25 on Sep 9, 2010 10:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Frye's already established himself as a backup C.

He plays better that way. Some people here actually said he should start at the 4 but having a backup center that can stretch the floor works better for our depth.

Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.

by NashMV3 on Sep 10, 2010 2:32 AM MDT up reply actions

If i had to give up one it'd be Dragic

i would hate to, but we’ve spent the last 20 years trying to get a decent defensive center and now we have one i’m not giving Robin up for anything.

by DaveJD on Sep 10, 2010 3:42 AM MDT up reply actions

I'd give up Dragic too if there's a guarantee that Reynolds would return to the Suns

or if Janning becomes a decent combo guard

I'm anxious to see what Hedo does

Before I start beating the drum for Horford or any other PF.
Everyone has written Hedo off, saying that he’s not a PF, but no one has seen him play the position before. He could turn out to be a revelation. I’m not prediciting 20/10, but the dynamic of Hedo at the 4 could yield some invaluble results.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really excited about Hedo.

I’d just be even more excited with Hedo at the three most of the time.

by waxmonkey on Sep 9, 2010 1:35 PM MDT up reply actions

the mismatch of him being at the 4 though

with Lopez down low…

or with Frye on the other 3-pt line, along with Dudley and Nash, and with Warrick setting up the pick-n-roll…

He looked good in Turkey's last few games as well.

I watched him play against Slovenia, and he is a lkegitimate 6’10". His rebounding looked pretty decent as well. I think he could easily get up to the 6 rpg range depending on how long he plays. With Robin in the middle and Grant and J-Rich on the wings, 6 should be good enough. People only think about how he will be a huge defensive liability rather than what he will do to opponents on the other end. That passing is going awesome coming from the 4 spot.

by Omaha Sun on Sep 9, 2010 10:22 PM MDT up reply actions

From what I’ve seen and heard is that Turk doesn’t seem to be a bad defender or bad as most people think he is. Perhaps slightly below average is where to put him. In other words, C-. Turk could give that on a consistent basis too.

Amar’e was very inconsistent with his Defense and would either give a D type of effort or a B type of effort. It was back and forth with him. Most of the time it was a D though.

The Lakers managed to get by with Odom as their PF in 2008 when Bynum was injured.

Sure they have Pau Gasol but with our depth, it should more than make up for Hedo’s size difference =/

Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.

Good point.

Don't trade Dudley!

by Beavis 25 on Sep 10, 2010 12:00 PM MDT up reply actions

really?

I always thought the opposite, but then I haven’t watched a ton of Odom’s games except against the Suns.

When he plays the Suns, he spends a lot more time outside then inside. He is a very good rebounder though.

He’s 6’10", and like 235 or so. He’s a bit stronger than most “big SFs” and has a bit more of a post game. He does spend most of his time in the corners, but that’s how LA’s offense works with him in. He either shoots from the corner, passes the ball to the other big, or slashes to the basket. He’s also a very good rebounder like you mentioned.

by Omaha Sun on Sep 11, 2010 7:45 PM MDT up reply actions

He may be 235 right now

…but that weight has gone up and down a lot over his career. I’ve seen him at 215 and I’ve seen him at 260.

ok so

Would love either smith or harford. but why has no one even considered going after marc gasol. His team has 10 players on the last year of their contract. He is a solid player that could give us serious contention. We all know what a gasol coming to n already successful team means…

by meeeh on Sep 13, 2010 11:21 PM MDT reply actions

Pretty sure he's the Grizz 1st priority

But we could probably pry out one of their backup centers – Haddadi or Thabeet.

by jc79 on Sep 14, 2010 12:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Not enough minutes for Lopez and Gasol.

Plus it would add evidence to the rumor that the Suns like going after the lesser of 2 brothers.

by Omaha Sun on Sep 14, 2010 1:45 PM MDT up reply actions

no on either of those

haddadi or thabeet. Just because they’re tall doesn’t make them great starters on a successful team.

We don't need a starting center, though

Just a gorilla to hang on a few select guys

lots of posts and comments

have mentioned brother Gasol.

the only thing that puts him below the Atl boys is that he’s a C (and would, theoretically, have to share time with Lopez then, which is not a good balance to the roster) and he’s slow. He’s not built to run, run, run.
