Phoenix Suns Lose Season Opener to Hornets in Heartbreaking Fashion, 85-84
The Phoenix Suns opened their season with a rough loss to the New Orleans Hornets tonight, 85-84. Scoring 84 points will simply not get it done for this Suns team, and impressive performances from Robin Lopez and Marcin Gortat plus 12 assists from Steve Nash weren't enough for the Suns to beat a Hornets team that isn't exactly a contender. This was a hard loss to swallow.
Robin Lopez led the Suns with 21 points and looked like the team's best player tonight. The Hornets' Eric Gordon was 0-6 from 3, but made a cold-blooded jumper over Jared Dudley for the game-winner. On the subsequent possession, the Suns turned the ball over before getting a shot off.
Lopez was a bright spot for the Suns, along with Markieff Morris and Marcin Gortat, but the Suns made only 40% of their FGs and 20% of their 3s. Again, that simply won't get it done.
Jump it for more.
Notes
- The Suns' bench did a decent job, but backup PG is the primary position of concern and Ronnie Price and Sebastian Telfair combined for 0 made FGs, 2 points, 2 assists and 1 rebound in 18 points of action. Ouch.
- Meanwhile, Suns centers Robin Lopez and Marcin Gortat combined for 34 points and 12 rebounds in 48 minutes. The Suns big men are a strength and we can't shoot. What kind of world am I living in?
- Markieff Morris scored only 7 points on 2-5 shooting but he gathered 9 rebounds in 25 minutes and looked active. A very nice debut for the rookie.
- The Suns had only 2 starters in double figure scoring and 3 players overall in double figures. This is the Phoenix Suns?
- Channing Frye did next to nothing and Morris was in the game down the stretch. Frye had 3 points and 4 rebounds in 23 minutes of play on 1-6 shooting. He didn't make a 3-point shot.
- Really? We lost to the Chris Paul-less Hornets at home? Really?
Next game: Wednesday, December 28th vs. Philadelphia 76ers, 7PM MST

It seems like I'm the only one who thinks the 'new look' Hornets are a good team
I know they lost CP3 and D West… but geez, they got a lot of good assets back and are a really talented team. Like I said in the thread, I’m not saying they are #1 in the NBA – but they do not ‘suck’ by any stretch of the imagination.
But forget about magnifying our sulking in a misperceived opponent – I’m very happy with how the Suns played tonight.
Considering a shortened training camp, a lockout, a rough preseason – This team showed great defensive improvement and significant offensive rust. Keyword – rust.
Alex L. Mentioned on twitter tonight that this game displayed a Suns team reminiscent of the 2nd half Suns of last year, “Close but no cigar”. For the very first game of the season I will giddily take that. I look forward to the next game.

Eh....

Shudder.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
Unless they really are dumb, the front office must be seeing this too.
But who would give up their wing scorer to us and what would it take?

I'm not using any sort of Championship Caliber measuring stick.
I think last night was at best a “can you compete for the 8th seed measuring stick” and after one game they fell short. The team was completely impotent in the first half and the only reason they weren’t throttled like against Denver is because they weren’t playing Denver. The second half got a little better when Nash decided to impose his will on the game.
Maybe they’ll run Philly out of the gym…who knows…but I won’t count on it.
Listen…I’m not throwing up my hands on the season but given the circumstances that’s a game the Suns need to win.

Disagree.
You may not have Scott, but most people complaining about this loss wouldn’t have said it was a bad win. Instead we would have heard things like, “wow, this team fought hard and came away with a win when they struggled to score,” or “what a gritty defensive effort to get the W.”
But we lost so we have to hear, “this team is the worst team in the history of sports. Why should we play anymore games? I can’t believe they traded Joe Johnson! Majerle for Hot Rod, are you kidding me?” etc, etc.

No logic in judging any of the teams at this point. For one, it’s the game number one. For two – it’s game number one after a lockout and an abbreviated training camp/preseason.
So is anybody willing to count the Lakers out or call them a ‘bad’ team since they’re 0-2, losses to the Bulls and the perennially terrible Sacramento Kings (which to call them a ‘bad’ team or a ‘team’ that sucks would be an error as well, like the Hornets)?

By what measure are they 'not good'?
Kaman, Okafor, Gordon, Landry, Ariza… You can’t say with a straight face that any one of those players is a ‘bad’ player. Aminu has great potential, Belinelli has been a consistently above average shooter, Jason Smith is a Lou Amundson type energy guy and they have a lot of young talent.
Kaman was an all-star last year and Gordon should have been and likely will be in the future – Landry is a competitive freak, any team he goes to he brings life to because of how hard he plays.
How does all of this add up to a ‘bad’ team?

Where do you think New Orleans finishes in the West?
I don’t think their raw talent is even Top 10 in the conference and beyond that they have more chemistry and meshing concerns than almost any other team (with all the turnover).
I understand you and Alex are trying to make sure people don’t go overboard but I feel like you guys are slipping a little too far the other direction with claims that losing to a messy Hornets team, at home is something that is OK.

You're absolutely correct
I do want to try and level the overreaction a bit – but that’s only a part of it.
I honestly believe that the West will be very competitive more than in previous years.
That’s where this is coming from – it seems like everyone wants to say “Oh if the team doesn’t make top 8 and get in the playoffs then they are terrible”. What’s wrong if there are actually 12-14 really good teams in a conference that compete night in and night out? Is that totally incomprehensible? I feel like that’s where the NBA is at the moment, we have a lot of really young and good talent ALL over the league. It’s going to be fun to watch.
Even if the Hornets aren’t ‘top 10’ they could still be a good team.

I agree with you on that. After about the top 6 or 7 teams, I think there’s a lot of parity or mediocrity or whatever you want to call it. Perennial doormats GS, SAC, and MIN have a lot of young talent, and teams on the decline like UTA, PHX, DEN, and NOH all have the pieces to be competitive and scrap for a playoff spot. The bottom of the WC is tough to predict.

Okafur & Kaman are a fairly capable 1-2 center combo and Eric Gordon can straight fill it up. They plkay hard and they are already on their way to being a top ten defensive unit. I predict they’ll get 30 wins….
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....! BTW, If positivity is a crime, I plead guilty by reason of T-Bird...!

I think some fans are listening to ESPN to much. ALL suns teams, in nash era, take about 7 games to gel offensively. So many positives: team hustle n scrappy defence: offence will com.
Suns 3 pt shooting will rise to normal standards which was cold, and this is what made the difference.
Hard to build off a loss
but we did some good things tonight. Just need to shoot the ball better (Frye esp.).
However, the team with the ‘closer’ won, and the team without one threw the ball out of bounds and couldn’t even get a shot. That will be the case 75% of the time, every time.

Even if Shannon Brown wanted to be worse in his 2nd game he probably couldn’t pull it off. His performance tonight was something special….like a ball hogging Earl Barron.

Of course he needs more time and opportunities,
But twice in the late third quarter I muttered “I’m done with you”. Absolutely terrible play
He is trying way too hard to be effective
And is taking some horrible shots in the process. Had some ugly turnovers… Bad fouls… Definitely can’t do much worse.

he is trying to be someone he’s not. Between him and Price/Telfair, there’s not a real plan in the backcourt.
If history holds true, Gentry will get Brown some minutes with the starters to help him find a niche, rather than trying to lead the second unit entirely.

Yep.
I laughed when he dunked on a breakaway on Christmas and grabbed his wrist on the way back down. Should have laid it up with the left.
But he has turned it over and had his shot blocked quite a bit in the first two games, and I wouldn’t put that entirely on the wrist.

Impressive loss...
like i said in the preview, all i wanted was a solid effort on defense; anything else is extra. I don’t know if it is positivity or that i have grown mature as a Sun’s fan. It’s all about getting used to heartbreaks.
"Who are we kidding?..."
All in all, I was pretty pleased.
Defensively, we looked pretty good tonight. The offense will come around. We won’t be a juggernaut, but we’ll score more than 84 a game. Frye isn’t going to struggle all year. He’ll heat up before you know it.
There was a lot of positives to take from the game.
Lopez was great. If he can perform half that good on a nightly basis that would be a huge improvement from last year.
Gortat had a strong game and should only get better once his thumb heals up.
Morris had a very strong first game for a rookie. He battled hard for rebounds and loose balls and does have NBA range. He can only get better.
Childress even had some nice moments tonight. In fact my biggest complaint of the night is that Gentry brought Brown into the game in the third quarter rather than Chilly.
This team is really only a wing player/go-to guy away from being able to make the playoffs and actually make a little noise. Problem is getting that player will be virtually impossible this year. Think we can convince B. Roy to come out of retirement for the chance to work with our training staff?
Bottom line, this team isn’t suppose to win a lot of games. So if they have a shot to do so on the last possession of the game, I’ll take that.
I was pleased and had a great time tonight. Looking forward to Wednesday.

Exactly.
Plus, what are the expectations for this team? Most seem to think we won’t be really good, so can we really be that upset when we lose to anyone? A lot of people want us to get a high draft pick next year anyway, so if we can be a bad team that loses a lot of games but have a shot to win at the end with our young guys growing and improving, I’ll consider that a nice step forward.
The game was ugly and the first half incredibly boring, but I think the second half was very entertaining and the finish was exciting even though we lost. At this point, I’ll take that.

Exactly how I feel
I am not super mad about this loss but it is just frustrating. It was a HOME game against a team who doesn’t have the best roster in the west and they beat us. We only have 66 games and we can only afford to drop so many games, I would like to see it be against a good team (considering we were at home, at least).

I’m not really referring to how you’re reacting to the loss. I think you see it the right way. Losing to the Hornets at home (even though I think they’re not as awful as some suggest) isn’t ok. We should be upset about it. With that said, it’s still not the end of the season like some are implying.
If the team is going to lose, I want to at least see them lose while giving effort. That’s what happened last night and I can live with that.

Ugly game to come home from
Our offense looked like a mess for almost the entire game, even WITH Nash on the court.
Chilly kept missing from three. We need a D-3 guy to spread the floor, but that’s not his game, and ultimately, I think he’s not going to be the right fit for us.
Frye is still in a slump.
I didn’t really even notice that Brown and Bassy were in the game. Bassy seemed to give the offense a little more movement than Price did, but Price was playing some really great defense at the other end. Unfortunately, neither of them can run the offense while Nash is out. The offense was completely stagnant when Steve was on the bench.
Gortat played well; Lopez played even better. The rookie was fantastic too. Active all over the court.
Steve looked tired. Grant was kind of invisible. Dudley did fine but it is telling that he is the starting SG on this team.

Didn't watch the game, but a couple of things stood out to me in the box score.
1. Grant and Chill, two of our weakest outside shooters, combined for 8 three-point shots (50% of their shot attempts).
2. Telfair and Price split time at the back-up PG spot. I think the last thing we need is discontinuity at the play-caller position when the second unit comes in. Gentry needs to decide on one of them to play all the back-up minutes, and quick.
3. Shannon Brown is as bad a chukker as Pietrus was, with a putrid 12.5% shooting percentage. At least Peaches provided decent rebounding and perimeter defense. Brown provides absolutely NOTHING in the box score besides woeful shooting.
4. Brown also got blocked 3 times in his 8 shot attempts. Case in point, this guy needs to either take some better shots or just stop shooting.
5. I think we got the versatile, mean, defensive, rebounding big man we’ve been looking for all these years in Morris. I LOVE 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in just 24 minutes of action. But three-point shots made up 60% of his FG attempts, and we didn’t draft Morris to jack up threes. He’s supposed to shore up our interior offense.
6. Gentry seemed really excited about using Warrick at the 3. I’m assuming Hak got a DNP because he had unfavorable matchups against Ariza and Aminu, who are both big, strong, and quick enough to contain him.
All in all, from just looking at the box score, it seems as if a lot of our troubles arise out of bad decision-making, particularly in the second unit. It all comes down to the poor play of our back-up point guards. Brown jacks up errant shots off iso plays, Childress and Morris jack up threes, and Warrick can’t provide pick-and-roll action because neither Price nor Telfair can provide the playmaking that we need from them.

Really great post, except for this. Morris is playing offensively exactly as he did at Kansas, which is to shoot 3s and jump shots. He made 42% of 3s last year. He is just not an inside scorer, except for hustle putbacks. I love the fact that he’s not trying to do anything he’s no good at (until Gentry made him do it).

I didn't mind that he was out there
He had been finding loose balls all night and could have been there for a put back if needed. The problem was putting the ball in his hands to make an important pass in his first NBA game.
I don’t even know what that last play was supposed to be. Was Nash supposed to cut to the basket there on the back door? He looked like he was open for it if he made the cut. I know Grant wasn’t having the best of games, but I would have been much more comfortable with him getting the ball there instead.
BAMF goes HAM.
That play reminded me of Shawn Marion’s first game as a rookie. I believe it was against Denver and went into OT and we had the ball for one last possesion to win or tie the game (not sure which). Marion passed in the ball in and threw it away.
Of course this may be entirely inaccurate and my mind is just making it up. Can anyone clarify?

And Nash was going to curl to the 3pt line or perhaps inside for a 2 pointer. But Grant missed the screen and Gordon stayed wtih Nash.

AzCentral had this to say about the play..
The Suns still had 4.2 seconds remaining but only a 20-second time out. Gentry stuck with the same lineup that played the final 5:41 and Nash inbounded the play to Morris, who had faked a screen for Dudley, who went to the corner, and turned around for the ball. Meanwhile, Lopez screened for Hill and wound up with Ariza on him as Okafor went to Hill, who went to the other corner. The play was supposed to go back to Nash with Lopez screening for him after he inbounded. Lopez never got a body on Gordon but he was out enough for Gordon to wind up trailing Nash. With Ariza jumping outside the 3-point line on Lopez for some reason, the middle of the court was wide open if Nash had cut toward the basket. Nash, worried about Emeka Okafor on HIll, pulled up just as Morris was passing to make the rookie look bad. Had Nash kept going, he could have got to the ball, although it would have been difficult to get up a good shot in an area by Hill 25 feet from the basket and no time to move.

Great point
No defense or rebounding was needed. Should’ve put int Frye. Or if he was cold from sitting so long, they should’ve hid Markieff in the corner
I think he was trying to display his confidence in the rookie,
which I like, but that’s certainly more than a questionable call in that situation.
Channing Frye would NEVER catch flying french fries with his left hand!
Well, of course it would've been much better if we had won,
and I do still feel sad that we lost to the Hornets in our home-opener. But I’ve had some time to calm down and think (I watched the Kings beat the Lakers) and I think that we can just take so many positives from this game, if you look past the blatant negatives.
I mean, how long have we been getting angry with Robin Lopez, begging for him to play better? And he went out there and kicked butt like his old self.
And Steve Nash is still Steve Nash.
And Markieff Morris continues to show a lot of promise.
I’m by no means pleased right now. But, I do think that we still have the chance to be an ok team this year.

Halfway through the game I realized how bad the Hornets are. But the Suns were worse, and when they had the chance to put the game on ice, they didn’t step up.
It’s going to be tough for a lot of teams, but the Suns have other factors like age and lack of talent and depth in key positions that will hamstring the team.

Our wings lost us the game, by my count they scored a combined 24 points and shot 2-15 from 3. As good as Nash, Lopez and Gortat were tonight, we will need consistent scoring from the wings to get in the playoffs, we know Jared and shannon can score but I don’t think they can guarantee us 25ppg a night like we need.
I was impressed by Morris but he showed his lack of experience with at least 3 very silly fouls that cost us. I don’t blame him for the last play because EG guarded Nash well. But despite him and Lopez playing well I would have prefered Gortat and Frye out there for the final 5 minutes despite Frye shooting poorly, sitting him is only going to hurt his confidence.
There was also a stretch between the end of the 3rd and the start of the 4th were we had a chance to make it a double digit lead, our defense was great then but Price/Bassy just couldn’t create anything to increase the lead.
And was I the only one shocked that Warrick didn’t play? He was impressive in pre-season + the scrimmage and he could bring instant offense at the 3 or the 4 if he was matched with Landry. I would have just rather have him run pick+roll than have Chilly shoot panic 3’s.
WARRICK BEING TRADED?
I dont buy into that “he had bad matchups stuff”. Only other reason could be a trade???

Most of you describe very well what is happend.
Question is how the next games will look like? Nash have no back up, Frye,Chill can’t score some points. Hill the same. OnlyNash we played P’n’R. Who wil be score? Too much questions without answers. I know season just started but we played with team from our Lavel (I think) in Home. Take a look what’s going on on the other courts. SAC won LA, MiN almost win with OKL. It doesn’t look good for Suns.
Definitely disappointing to lose
But like many others said, there were a lot of good things to take from this.
I don’t expect us to shoot as bad as we did tonight forever, first half was painful at times but I think there was a lot of rust of these guys, especially Grant and Channing in the first half. Shortened training camp and prep these guys still have a lot going.
Seeing Lopez’s 21 and activity is a huge encouragement especially based on what we saw last season, Gortat is still impressive and was very excited about Morris’ game. He was active on the boards and on defense and I can see him having a BIG impact on the Suns this season.
It sucks to lose, but I’m holding out hope that these guys can get their act together shooting wise and be able to take advantage of having some quality bigs to throw at opposing teams.
That said, Telfair and Price didn’t have very much of an impact and Shannon seemed overeager to convince fans he was an asset and it made him look out of place.

there were a lot of positives, and surely we can’t shoot that poor too often; right? Loved Morris and Lopez. If we get some of the other guys right, we could exceed expectations. Hill, Frye, and Brown are totally MIA (missing in action, not South Beach – though maybe they are at the beach)

Is not our defense
We held this team to a 85 point game, i think we need to count on those Frye´s 3s and so Childress offensive rebounds.
And so Shannon and Telfair, Grant Hill fail miserable to do any of the things his 6.5mil was signed for, i was counting and is it secure to say that Lopez is catching and doing a lot better, yet he was more known from his defensive side and so Gortat, they are big bodies, they cannot allow little guys like Gordon do whatever they want under the rim, if he is gonna kill us from somewhere should be 3 pointline and mid ranges.
Also very dissapointed with Dudley who is our specialist defender lack of any of his attributes.
Blind enough to believe on Pudgemonster.
Ah cmon people.
Yes, we lost. Yes, it was ugly as hell. But seriously has anyone else watched basketball for other teams this year? EVERYONE (but the heat) looks ugly and sloppy and shitty. I gotta be honest, I hate the loss, but if we were going to lose in some way, I am glad that it was because we havent gotten our shot (e.g. Frye) than for some other reason. They showed plenty of promise in the 1st and 3rd with Nash out there and had grit in digging out of a 10 point hole to take the lead against a scrappy hornets team. I can be happy about that. Here are a few things that I take away.
1) Gortat is rusty, Markief is new, and Robin is baller. Our big men played a VERY nice game for having been away from the NBA game for so long. My take is that Robin played so well because he knows the system and is confident. Imagine how much better Morris and Gortat will do when they round into form.
2) Brown and Price were putrid, but we only lost by one. Price has been in PHX all of, what, a week? Give him a break. We all know Brown is talented but, again, he has only been here a little while. It looks like he is trying really hard to show he is good. Once he settles down his shots will fall and we will be golden.
3) Frye’s shot will come. He was active on defense and played Landry pretty strongly.
4) Nash looked rusty, but he broke out of it late. Not sure what is going on there. He seemed to want to facilitate and not shoot but I think we are going to need him to be a scorer early on this season until the team gets more comfortable.

Come on fans (breathe)
Positives:
1) rookie is very balanced (7pt 9rb 2ast 2st 2bs) and a 3.
2) Rolo is back (21pt 7rb – only 3 fouls)
3) 45 rebounds (12 offensive), and 9 steals
Yes, we need another finisher. Given the hustle, scrapping, and defence we saw, this will keep us close so when the 3’s do start to fall, will change the outcome of games like this.
Everyone knows the suns will shoot over 40% from dwntn, so please, enough with declaring the season is over based on one game.
Look for Frye to move to the bench for more ball control and scoring; allowing Kief and Gortat to dominate on the glass; how can you not be totally excited about our bigs.
Give Price and Telfair at least 2 games to learn the new system.
The greatest strength I saw last night was more balance. Imagine seeing our threes falling on top of that great defence.

Actually
Everyone knows the suns will shoot over 40% from dwntn
the Suns shot .377 from three point range last year.
In 2009-10 they shot .412 from three point range, but that was the only year in the Nash era they topped 40% (interestingly enough they finished at .399 twice)
Just to keep it real, 40% is a pretty lofty goal. 38% is more realisitic.

What a game by Rolo.
He was so frustrating last season, nice to see how active and efficient (in offense & defense) he was vs the Hornets.
Still a disappointing loss (Frye, Hill, Chilly and Brown did not look good… and the Suns are still struggling in the money time), but they showed some encouraging things. Nice defensive improvement, especially.
It’ll take some time to see these guys at their full collective capacity, and based on what I saw last night, I’m pretty confident.

Regarding the go-to-scorer
(patting my own back) I wrote about this 1-2 weeks ago. Suns still lacking that offseason target – a go-to scorer. Trust me that the front office is not blind. They see the same thing.
Yet they signed Shannon Brown as their only attempt to fill this gap, hoping that he was ready to break out from behind Kobe and become an all-around good player. So far, no good. But I’m pretty sure that the front office will give him more than a few games to get his feet under him and play well before replacing him with someone off the street.
Patience is required here. Might even require waiting till next season to fill that go-to scorer gap. Suns won’t sacrifice 2012 cap space on a veteran acquisition just to make this season more palatable. So either a trade is made at the deadline (in 2 months) or next summer’s offseason. But not in the next few weeks.

True, and those guys aren't easy to find. Patience is the key.
In the meantime, we need the shooters we have to shoot much better. I’m especially disappointed by Frye. I’m sure his shot will come around, but he has the look of a player who didn’t work diligently enough during the lockout to prepare himself to hit the ground running whenever the season would finally start. That a rookie in Kieff is showing him how it’s done early on says a lot about Morris, but also says a lot about Frye.
On a personal note, I’d like to mention that one of the two women sitting next to us at the game had an autographed Pat Burke jersey on, and the other a homemade Suns Santa Cap. Obviously, I extended a warm EBR welcome for them to join our community here.

I gritted my teeth then thought, “Let’s sign this guy next summer.” Gentry compared him to Joe Dumars. Great compliment. Gordon doesn’t seem too pleased to be a Hornet, maybe he considers Phoenix an option by next summer.

What matters is the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Oh and having quality players on the squad already and a player friendly coaching staff. How many interactions are the players going to have with Sarver? And unless he starts bouncing checks, I really think ownership is a non-issue for the Suns right now.
Further, I think Bob may be considering loading up one last time to make a deep run in the playoffs, increasing the value of the franchise, and then selling for a profit. I’ve been wrong before.

All teams are rusty, hell Dallas is 0-2. There will ups and downs the first 2 months of the year.

But it sure feels like a lot of you are putting lipstick on a pig. Obviously I’m not willing to give up on the season after one game but against a thrown together mess of a Hornets team, at home, the Suns need to win. Not should have won, not could have won…they needed to win. The margin for error is so insanely thin with this team that they can’t afford to give away games to non-playoff Western Conference teams (which is what the Hornets are).
Robin looked great and there’s reason for optimism with Morris who seems like he’ll be a tough rebounder (quite a concept). Everything else? Pretty rough. If Grant Hill looks old and slow in Game 1, I can’t imagine what he’s going to look like in Game 50 on the third night of a back to back to back.
We’ll see. I’ll be there acting frustrated against Philly because well really….I don’t know any better.

There is a lot of talent on this suns team, just not the traditional type. We have shown you do not need a post up dominating center to go deep into the playoffs. There is a new type of player in the league now, its a very balanced big PF type of guy. Can post up, can shoot three pointer. solid defence, and we see some of this starting to develope on our team.
I've heard this is true.
There is a lot of talent on this suns team, just not the traditional type.
They may not be any good at basketball, but Rolo does an excellent Buffalo Bill impression, Nash is quite the adept filmmaker, and Channing Frye has a promising career in acting in commercials.
I’m sure we can add to the list of non-traditional talents the Suns possess.

If Lopez can continue his play like last night...
…I propose nicknaming him Beast, like from X-Men. 1, Lopez is big. 2, Lopez is smart (I’m assuming because he went to Stanford.) 3. He’s an X-Men fan.
Maybe he’ll continue to play well and be inspired if he has a good nerd related nickname, right? I’m just throwing this out there. You guys can throw it back if you like.

On a good note...
the Lakers are 0-2 lol…i hope the Jazz can make that an 0-3.
All kidding aside, i really thought that our defense was ok…we just really didnt make any of our good looks from anywhere. We really need Shannon Brown to step up and stop trying hard too much. There were plenty of occasions where he should’ve given up the ball, rather than shoot an off-balanced shot. But i was really looking forward to an high-flying dunk yesterday..i guess in due time.
This was a competitive game between two sub-par teams "with upside"
Both teams had some points to build on, but the fact remains that both teams are more than “one wing player away” from being competitive in the Western Conference.
One team shot 40% and the other shot 44%. One team was 20% from three and the other was 12% from three.
Both teams have enough to pull off a few wins and hover around .500. Is that “good enough” around here?
The Gortat/Lopez combination at center is nice and was showing promise last year, too. It is a great asset to have, if the right pieces are around them. However, does anyone see either player developing into a dominant NBA player? At best, this tandem is an incredible asset on a team with 2-3 legit NBA stars.
Right now, however, only Nash is playing at an elite level, and his status in that range is going to be questionable until the end of his career.
Enjoy the ride, Suns’ fans. If Nash stays, there will be some great games to watch. There will also be games more infuriating than this one to watch. There may even be a chance at the 8 seed in the playoffs. It’s not like we’re stuck watching the Kings or Bobcats.
But — the fact that Morris was a crucial link in the attempted game-winning play means that the Suns are building for the future.

But — the fact that Morris was a crucial link in the attempted game-winning play means that the Suns are building for the future. Why are people so surprised that the Suns didn't win last night? I'm not pissed at all, because it was not the FOs plan to contend this season. It was their plan to scrape and claw into 2012.

I agree with you
because it was not the FOs plan to contend this season
Which is why I don’t understand why we’ve chosen the treadmill team route. We should just commit fully to the rebuild and get ourselves a better chance at a good pick in an excellent draft. This ~.500 basketball we’re destined to play is just…pointless.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
cuz you can’t just let Nash and Hill go.
We spend all this time hating the ownership, yet never give them credit for being loyal to those loyal to them. Nash, Hill, Frye and Dudley have shown loyalty and leadership (and played well) and been rewarded. Others have not.

I like giving Morris burn, so he can get better. But, for the Suns to be intellectually honest with the fans, Nash needs to be moved to the contender of his choice.
Mmmmm ... Guinness
Things I noticed.
The Suns started the game with the same starting 5 that they finished last season with for the first time in 21 years…. and still started flat. Choose to believe what you want, but the Suns should have an early advantage over most teams in terms of the number of players they returned.
The Suns had 7 turnovers in the first quarter (which is bad), but only 7 more the rest of the game (which is good). The starters recovered from a slow start and ended up with all 5 player posting a + in +/- for the game. EVERY player on the bench had a – led by Childress -7 and Morris -6 (even Lopez was -2). This kind of surprised me since I felt there were some legitimate contributions from the bench (most notably Lopez).
After controlling the boards for the better part of the game, the Suns surrendered their advantage in the fourth quarter and ended up losing the battle of the boards 47-45.
I agree with comments above about the Price/Telfair situation. Pick one. I don’t like an 11 man rotation. I don’t even really like a 10 man rotation. How about Gentry rotating a player out every 10th game? That would give everybody 6 days off during the season (last night was Warrick’s turn….). Keep everybody fresh and keep the rotation down to 8 or 9. If Gentry insists on playing 10, he could still implement this idea and pull it off.
The Suns will play better than this, especially if they can continue to show the spirit they had last night. The shooting will come. There were some encouraging aspects to last night’s game (Rolo, Keef) even though it was a bad loss to a bad team with players who haven’t even been formally introduced to each other and were without their starting point guard.
It was only called the mildly irritated house on McDowell until I showed up.

This is a really good post...
…that sums the game up pretty well. I’d rather have a bad loss with a few bright spots than a bad loss in which every player played awful.
Surprised to see Chilress had the lowest +/- out of the bench guys and very surprised to see Morris was a -6 and Lopez was negative anything. I would’ve guessed Brown led the team with a -5151518421.
I think most people saying this loss is the end of the world need to re-evalulate their expectations for this team. With that said, I think we can still compete for a playoff spot. Not sure if we’ll get in, but we can compete.

Maybe, But
the Suns should have an early advantage over most teams in terms of the number of players they returned.
I guess we’re talking chemistry which after some equation leads to wins, but the Suns still need to make shots. They need to execute-especially during crunch time.
Familiarity with your team is great, continuity, is usually a good thing. However, if you are returning a mediocre team, playing together for awhile doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to perform well.
The Suns will play better than this, especially if they can continue to show the spirit they had last night. The shooting will come.
I think it will as well. I think you had a lot of nerves out there…And yeah Hill looked old slipping around..reminds me of me when i try to play, but i saw a number of guys slip and fell out there. maybe the over polished the floor or something.

Even though we were bad last night...
we weren’t handed a 30 point ass-kicking like the Mavs were. That was their 2nd in a row, I believe? The Mavs played the Nuggets almost like we did in the preseason…
I’m grabbing at straws, but hey… I’m gonna try to find positives wherever I can.
Once you go Nash, you won't wanna go back.
Is anyone else majorly concerned
with how gassed Nash and Hill seemed to be? Didn’t see it myself but apparently Nash was asking to come out of the game in the 3rd.
Now I know other teams are similar (the Mavs even had someone throw up), but this is truly alarming. More alarming than Shannon Brown’s “performance”, more than Childress chucking up dumb threes and more than Frye’s inability to hit a cow’s arse with a banjo.
You take Nash off this roster it is hands down the worst roster in the Western Conference. If he can’t handle this many minutes in the very first game…..
Being tired in a game is different than breaking down later in the season though. Depsite the excellent shape Nash and Hill stay in during the offseason, it’s still not quite the same as being in basketball shape which they need a full training camp and preseason to get into. I think they’ll both be fine once they get their legs under them. Problem is that with a shortened season, we don’t have much time.

I'm more concerned with Frye's footwork
I saw a couple shots last night he didn’t have his feet set right.
Voted most likely to say "I told you so"
That's what gets him in trouble.
When he chucks ’em up rather than spotting up, getting squared to the basket, and knocking them down. He went inside to try to get himself going though, so I guess that was a positive.

I don’t think it was “gassed” as much as injury. Nash was popped in the ribs (which prompted asking out of the game, then only taking 1 more shot after coming back a few minutes later), and Hill was nursing a sore knee.

But Nash was asked this very question and said he took a shot to the ribs so it took the wind out of him and that even after the game it hurt to breathe. So, I think he was fine at least.

Why is it that Gentry is making Chill shoot 3's?
The guy is not a jumpshooter since his Atlanta Hawks days to his Euro team. Can’t Gentry come up with plays designed for Chill to attack the basket?

He is not a great shooter,
but he can hit it from the corner. He’s averaged around 35-37 percent before (albeit on limited attempts).
I agree don’t want to see him taking 4 3s a game, but he does have to take that shot if the ball comes to him and he’s open. The offense won’t work if he’s afraid to shoot. The pump-fake and drive is nice to have, but if he does it every time he’s just going to ruin the spacing.

Should we still be concerned about spacing?
I thought spacing is about giving Amare (when he was here) the space he needed in the paint to operate. We don’t have that kind of player anymore so why bother?
Women were the reason I became a monk - and, ah, the reason I switched back... -Morte, Planescape Torment
You need spacing in any offense.
Having too many people in the same area makes a team much easier to defend.
It’s like I always tell my brother, when I call a play for him to cut, he has to cut. It doesn’t matter if he gets the ball or not, it still cause the defense to react and moves them around, hopefully creating an opening.
Chill is not going to make a ton of 3-pointers, but he does have to take that shot every now and then to keep teams honest.

It's worthless to have him attempt to shoot a 3
I see Brown attacking the basket and wonder why can’t Chill just simply attack it? It’s as if he doesn’t have the freedom to do what he does best. Simply hoisting up the shot from beyond the arc just because he gets it and he’s free should not mean he has to shoot it from there. It’s like Rondo in a sense that Doc Rivers doesn’t require him to shoot 3’s.
Women were the reason I became a monk - and, ah, the reason I switched back... -Morte, Planescape Torment
It's not worthless.
Like I said, even if it doesn’t go in all the time, it still causes the defense to react. And if he can make one now and then, it opens up the middle.
He did drive it a couple of times. But there were guys waiting for him in the paint.

All I'm saying is Gentry should tweak the offense a bit if he want to play Childress.
Just a lil bit. Gentry asking Chill to shoot 3’s is like asking Nash to dunk everytime he attacks the basket.
Women were the reason I became a monk - and, ah, the reason I switched back... -Morte, Planescape Torment
It's not like We are asking Gani Lawal to take threes.
Chilly can shoot it a little bit. It’s just better for him to only take one or 2 a game. What we need to do is try to put him in position where he isn’t the one catching that pass so often. Let him play mostly on the weak side where he can back cut and crash the offensive boards. But Steve goes where the defense dictates, and you can’t go to the same side every time.

Been a Suns fan since 1976 when Alvan Adams was a rookie and Westy and Don Buse and Gar Heard and Dick Van got us oh so close. I remember everything since from Johnny High’s murder (he didn’t die from the car wreck) down on Washington St. and Truck and Socks, Larry Nance, Q and Joe Johnson. And now I don’t care if they ever win another game while Sarver is here. That bum cut off Ch.45 and a good part of the Suns loyal followers over the years. For what? For nuthin but a few extra bucks from Cox, that’s what.. I’m not about to install a dish to watch this clown parade and the season pass scam blacks out home games and what the networks want to showcase. Not that this crew will draw their attention.. The Suns are no longer Colangelo’s Suns and I’m no longer a fan….in fact I’m now the enemy….every loss is Sarver’s loss and hopefully by Valentine’s Day, there will be more empty seats than tull ones at America West. good competition
You can believe Frye is feeling the presure of a rookie taking his spot in the starting rotation (good competition). Same with a few other positions, like Warrick and Chily backing up BAMF (only reason Warrick didn’t play is that Gentry needed to see if Chily is gonna step up, he already knows what Warrick can do); other good comp. is between Gortat and Rolo; backup PG; and even Duds feeling Brown on his tail. So, having a bunch of roll players does have some benefit.
Yeah. Definitely good competition. Frye needs to get his head in the game. Come on, dude. He and Hill don’t look right.
