Oh No! Phoenix Suns Expected to Waive Vince Carter
To add to all the no-brainer news lately, sources close to the Phoenix Suns organization are saying that the Suns have already decided to waive Vince Carter for the upcoming NBA season.
Espn's Chris Broussard and Marc Stein, at least one of which tends to have trustworthy sources, report that Phoenix will opt to buy out Vince's contract for $4 million, making him an unrestricted free agent. The waiver must be complete within 72 hours of the opening of the free agency period, which begins this upcoming Friday.
Perhaps more noteworthy is the fact that there are a few teams with possible interest in Vince, including Chicago, Miami, and San Antonio. Carter has been a common punching bag for Suns fans throughout his potentially short tenure with the Suns, with many questioning his competitive drive and ability to be an effective teammate.
This shall be an interesting free agency period, indeed.

Gortat+Rolo playing next to each other=a bad idea
They’ll be bumping into each other, and the redundancy means that one of them will just be standing around and watching while the other one does anything.

O rly?
So how did the original twin towers work in San Antonio?
Two big men (at least this year one of them (hopefully) will be double teamed once in a while) can work inside for a nice two-men game…
Robinson and Duncan didn’t have better range than Hammer and Rolo, and it worked on offense.
Any chance that Dream-shaken Gortat can earn some respect in the paint this season?

Having Rolo and Gortat (who usually rely on the pick & roll) would absolutely kill the spacing. Why do you think Frye is so valuable to the Suns? He is a big who spreads the floor.

I was much more pleased with those 2s midrange game last season
They are not great at getting their own shot but I trust them shooting the ball off of a screen or just hitting the open J.
Grant Hill has shot over 40% from 3 last 2 seasons
Although he only really takes corner 3s but still. Also Chill used to shoot around 37% from 3 at Atlanta didn’t he?
Carter having a glazed-eyes contest with Boris Diaw. Carter's winning, but Diaw might respond by eating his eyes.
I was just gonna post this about Grant
Even though Dudley’s midrange game has been a knock on him, he’s always put up a decent percentage. He shot 47.7% field too last year.
I agree with what your saying though suns68 in that we need more pure scorers.
BAMF goes HAM.
Grant only takes 3s that are in his favor to make
Sure he takes the very, very occasional 3 from outside the corners but he mainly sticks there because he can hit that shot consistent enough (as that % shows)
I was more confident with Hill throwing up a three than VC or Pietrus that’s for sure.
Member of the "Let’s Make FanShots Relevant!" Club
That's why shooting percentage has to be
weighted to a certain degree to adjust for volume.
It’s a little bit different if a player is a team’s number one scoring option and has to throw up tough, contested shots at times when the offense gets stagnant compared to a player who only shoots if he’s wide open within 5 feet of the basket.
Shot selection is important, but on some possessions there aren’t open shots and improvisation becomes necessary. In this case, I would definitely say that Hill is not a volume three point shooter, and if he attempted to be one it would have negative repercussions on his shooting percentage.
It was only called the mildly irritated house on McDowell until I showed up.
by Jim Coughenour on Dec 5, 2011 8:09 AM MST up reply actions
It is probably easier to correct shooting deficiencies
than the overall lack of premiere talent on the team.
Nash and Frye are both exceptional shooters respective to their positions. Dudley is a legitimate three point threat that can go into the category of a volume three point shooter. Hill can space the court because he is at least a threat from long range even if he’s not a volume shooter.
Childress will need to develop into at least the threat that Hill is (if not more) if he is going to successfully integrate into the rotation. His ability to help space the floor and at least be a threat from long range is, in my estimation, critical to being valuable to the team as presently constituted.
In essence, the shooting prowess of the collective team will largely be determined by the actions relating to replacing Carter and Pietrus (possibly). With Carter being gone, that leaves a roster space and playing time available at the 2. If the Suns can add a competent shooter/scorer to fill the void left by Carter’s absence (which was interestingly similar to the one left by his presence), this would improve the outlook. If Pietrus could be dealt for someone with a normal human sized brain, things would also look more roseate.
2-3 three point threats on the floor at one time is generally sufficient to provide adequate spacing. The Suns have three excellent options (Nash, Frye, Dudley) and a fourth decent option (Hill) that are proven commodities.
If Childress improves and the spots occupied by Carter and Pietrus yield anything positive, that number could easily grow into 5-7 long range threats. This doesn’t even address Brooks and his possible arrival at some point during the season.
Good front office moves and improvement from current players could help the team develop into a team rife with shooters. Then again maybe Nash and Hill are both gone and the Suns really only have two. Still hard to tell at this point.

Voted most likely to say "I told you so"
Remember that we still have PIetrus.
In all the lineups I have seen no one is including him. As much as his shot selection is suspect, he is still a good athletic player for us. I see him as back up SG or even starting sometimes over Dudley. Hill and Chill on the 3, Frye and Morris at the 4, Gortat and Lopez at the 5. Thats not bad, minus the fact that we have no backup for Nash.

I'm not buying the "addition by subtraction" argument with VC
He wasn’t a team cancer or anything. He just wasn’t that good. So, now we have Dudley and Pietrus at SG and we expect to get more production out of that spot than we did last year? I’m skeptical unless we make a quality FA signing.

Anyone Know the Details Re: VC and Free Agency?
Re; VC’s free agency onsite says he has to be disposed of one way or the other “72 hours before” free agency starts. other sites say “within 72 hours of free agency beginning” and from the get-go we were told VC’s fate had to be decided by Dec. 6. Free agency starts on the 9th, officially, and one site says “Carter must be bought out within 72 hours of the beginning of his free agency” (italics mine), which can be read to mean he has a specific date his free agency begins rather than the Dec. 9 group date. I mean, if you’re obsessive and going a little crazy, it could be read that way.
so – does free agency for VC begin on the 6th, due somehow to expiry of the extension he signed, or does he become a free agent at the same time as all other players? Or is it with 72 hours of his own Dec. 6th deadline ….
It seemed too perfect a raping to require VC’s exit to be settled three days before we could attempt to deal him. Perfect Suns’ coin-toss luck … the toast always lands jam-side down, right?
But I had always thought that free agency began on a specific date and time for all contracts which expired afte the close of the previous season. Why did I suppose that? I have no idea – received wisdom, maybe. It just always seemed to work that way and it’s the impression columnists and writers gave.
So – I’m left hoping that the Suns’ FO knows the actual, legal position they’re in re: Vince, and we’ll find out farther along. I would imagine there is much telephone chatter going on on the way to the starting line
That's a good way of turning the phrase.

Vince Carter and Pietrus look like they could be good at basketball... but they're not.
On the other hand, Nash, Dudley, Frye and Gortat look like a bunch of amateurs…, but they’re not.
Don't trade Dudley!
With one difference - one was great and the other was not
And one seldomly is still great.
The thing with Vince is how he sees the game: he sees the game as a demonstration, as a GAME (not a war), and plays accordingly. I can relate to that because I see it in the same way.
The only times I really get serious about basketball are:
1) The ball hits me in the face and I get annoyed and start playing hard
2) The guy I’m defending starts playing hard on offense on me so I get annoyed and start playing hard. Sure, you need to defend first for that to occur so…
3) I get fouled.
Not sure these apply to Vince though ^^
Vince Carter leaving is the Suns Christmas present to everyone.
And it is the most beautiful present a Suns fan could receive.
God I hate Vince. And don’t go giving me that ‘hate is such a strong word’ cr*p. In Vince’s case, it’s not strong enough.
I hate him because he made me want to believe in him. His signing, despite my heart shouting at me and telling me that every scrap of evidence suggests he is going to spend more time on the floor than an alcoholic homeless guy, jack up more shots than a heroin addict and whinge more than a 18 month old baby who is constantly being pinched on the cheek by his grandparents, my head still told me it might work out. I viewed the footage on youtube of him and remembered the dunk on Zo. I watched the dunk contest. I rewatched him helping Toronto into the play-offs and I tried to believe.
And then, right on cue, he acted like a complete d*ck.
I hate him for making me feel that I should care.
And while I’m on a hate-trip, I still hate STAT. Y’know why? It’s because HE made me believe. He made me believe that he was enjoying his basketball enough to stay around once his contract ended. I tried to not care. I relented for most of the season and then he dunked all over Golden State which turned the tide in the game and got the Suns the win.
How could I not believe in a man that could do that for his team?
And then, right on cue, he did what was best for him. And I hate him for that.
Y’know who else I hate? Sarver. HE is the reason for the above and I hate him.

Thats a lot of hate!
I feel you though… I too opened up to Carter even though I knew I shouldn’t. I hoped he would somehow come to PHX and flourish, but this was not to be.
Amare… I always hoped he would maybe take a look around him and possibly take note of players like Hill and Nash. Nash easily could be greedy and try and get a max contract somewhere, but he does not. Amare could have followed in his example and taken a smaller contract in order to stay here with the team, but he didn’t. I honestly can hardly watch him anymore in a Knicks uniform.

Was when he set a good, hard screen on Steph Curry during a game against GSW, sending Curry to the floor. Instead of using the advantage of the opposing D missing a man, he stopped to help Curry up. Then, if I remember correctly, he said “Awww, I didn’t hurt you, did I, little buddy?” Then he bought Curry an ice cream cone. Or something like that.

Here's my question
As happy as I am to get rid of him, and as much as the eye test tells me that he dragged our team down immensely last season….is that really true?
Look at the stats for the Nash/Carter/Hill/Frye/Gortat lineup:
http://www.nba.com/news/features/john_schuhmann/statscube-preview-2011-PHX/index.html
+14.6!!
But when Gortat shared the floor with Nash, the Suns were pretty good on both ends of the floor. And their third most-used lineup, which included Nash and Gortat, was downright dominant in almost 200 minutes of action. There were only three lineups in the league (the Celtics had two and Dallas had one) that were better in as many minutes as that lineup played.
I mean…wow. That’s amazing.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
I didn’t look at the link yet, but guessing before the trade we had crappy Lopez barely scoring and rebounding while J-Rich was playing decently, but then Gortat and Carter came which basically doubled the offense of J-Rich and Lopez combined plus more rebounds from Gortat.
Twitter: @FredLegittt
Weirdly enough
Vince was the most efficient pick and roll ball handler in the league for the Magic before the trade occured to Phoenix.
Which kinda does jack squat for our team
since Steve handles that particular duty
