I have to say this could be one of two things, electrifying or a bust. Right now I am leaning towards electrifying, for this to sink in you have to first think about the team he is on now and how they are designed...first off he receives most of his points off of sheer athleticism and the assists of his teammates, this is a team that has an assists leader in one of the most selfish one on one players of all time. So can you imagine for a second how incredible it would be to see some dimes dished from the hands of a perennial all star and future hall of famer? I dare say it could be incredible.
We also have the positives that he is a decent shooter from range and he has the hops of a much younger Vince Carter who he would be replacing. It could really breed an entertaining form of basketball. Not to mention on a one year deal which is the rumored length we would be getting the guy for a steal, and if it doesn't work out...oh well we have next year to look forward to. I mean come on, it is not like we expected the finals from this team anyways.
Now the downside would be that he ins't a natural one on one player like we have been after at the 2 spot, he has decent handles and enough athleticism to get to the rack, but more often then not he has relied on being the 4th or 5th option in scoring. He does average a respectable 8.7ppg on only 18 minutes although he does shoot at a less than stellar 43% from the field. Still I wonder if he has the mindset to lead a team.
Although I am skeptical I do think he is a major improvement over our lack of a true shooting guard. He is still young and has a defensive mindset from playing on the Lakers not to mention some of the best 2 guard coaching a player could ask for in Kobe Bryant, maybe all he needs is a new location to let him shine. We obviously need the offensive help.
