NBA Rumors: Chris Paul Trade To Los Angeles Lakers, Does It Spell Disaster?

The Los Angeles Lakers have done it again. They pulled off a big time trade that landed Chris Paul while sending Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol away to the New Orleans Hornets and Houston Rockets respectively. The initial reaction I'm seeing on Twitter is a lot of doom and gloom -- oh, no, the Lakers did it again. But I'm not so sure this deal is as good as some seem to think, especially in the short term and especially if they can't some how also get Dwight Howard.

I put together a more detailed analysis of the trade here. I looked at it for each team and broke down the salary numbers. The long of the short of it is this: I don't see the Lakers being better with Kobe, Paul and Bynum than they were with Kobe, Odom and Gasol.

What made the Lakers so damn good was their size. Kobe was great, sure, but the Suns beat the Lakers when it was Kobe and Kwame Brown. Add Kobe to those three seven-footers with compatible skill sets and whamo! Rings.

Now, if the Lakers can still manage to flip Bynum for Dwight Howard it's game over. But we are a ways away from that.

In the mean time, Bynum's knee is still a question long term. Chris Paul missed half the season two years ago and played with a giant brace on his knee last year and he wasn't the same guy and Kobe went to Germany for some kind of plasma therapy on his knee.

That's a lot of knee issues along with the obvious time it's going to take them to gel. The Lakers now have Bynum up front and then....(crickets). So, let's no rush out and panic over this deal just yet. K?

[Update by Seth Pollack, 12/08/11 7:11 PM MST ]

It would appear the other NBA owners didn't agree with me that this wasn't a great deal for the Lakers so they apparently nixed it. High comedy right there, folks. Any guesses which owner(s) bitched the loudest?

Completely disagree

I really think that NO got more than they desrved on this trade.

1. Paul could leave next year for nothing
2. His knee is moooore than iffy
3. You always trade for bigger – that’s what they say…

So I guess NO with Scola, Odom and Martin if they resign west – are as competitive as they were with Paul, I will go out on a limb and say they would get further this year than they did last year.

For LAL getting CP3 for Gasol and Odom is not such a great move in my opinion – they lose the most creative big man in the game + their 6th man for a great but injury prone PG.

They would by no means be a monster if the trade went through. And the trade doesn’t even remotely remind me the Gasol steal…

An interesting twist.

The 29 other owners, with their majority de facto control over the league and the league’s actual control over the Hornets don’t want this.

Wonder what power they actually have in this situation. Wonder if it is their right, legally or ethically, to wield it.

In theory only.

I would expect that when the league took over the Hornets, there was something in some paperwork about them being good faith owners, and being required to look out for the best interest of the Hornets.

Without that, 31 owners could just decide for NO to be the worst team out there all the time, and fail to draft well. There’s a conflict of interest when you are owned and run by your competitors.

Assuming that is the case, it would have to be shown that the league is not acting in the best interest of the Hornets in order to block the trade. In my opinion, NO did pretty well in that trade. Claiming their being bamboozled is a hard pill to swallow.

The only other option would be for the owners to claim that the trade is so one-sided and the result will be so destructive to the league’s ability to create an entertaining product (i.e. one team completely dominates and wins every game every year), that it must be blocked for the good of the league. It appears that this is the approach the owners will take, at least in the short run. It’s a little harder to disprove.

I can’t see either of those claims panning out. It’s a legal trade. It’s a good trade for the Hornets. It won’t break the league.

Assuming neither NO, LA or Hou backs out or changes their mind, I see it going through.

Again, I don’t think they are claiming it’s illegal. I think they are using their leverage with the lockout not being over to say they don’t want it and Stern had no choice but to acquiesce. He doesn’t want to lose a season or two of the NBA. It would be an irreparable black mark.

Depends.

Assuming the league has some sort of legal responsibility to do what’s best for the Hornets while they are running the Hornets, they’ll need something other than “because we own you” as grounds for killing it.

Which is, I think, why they are going the “basketball reasons” route.

Don’t think that’s likely to fly. It’s hard to argue that NO has a real shot of re-signing Paul, so getting value for him is their best bet. I think they did pretty well in this regard.

Awesome. I’m guessing they threatened to continue the lockout, which they were very reticent to end in the first place, but Stern had done an amazing sell job. He couldn’t spin this though. This was outright thievery. The next step was to trade Bynum for Howard and a 10-year dynasty was all set. I’d sure as hell bitch about it if I were the owners also. Now, if NO wants to trade Paul to Warriors or Clippers or Boston, will everyone complain then? What if it happens? LA will sure have a reason to complain.

This isn't so bad.

Compared to a possible Hedo and Howard for Bynum and Odom trade, this deal doesn’t make the Lakers an even bigger superpower.

I’d be more afraid of this lineup:
PG – Fisher
SG – Kobe
SF – Hedo
PF – Gasol
C – Howard.

As opposed to this one:
PG – Paul
SG – Kobe
SF – Barnes
PF – Artest (Fuck World Peace)
C – Bynum

well

consider that they are trading one player for four and also if they were to keep Paul he’d be adding a ton of future contract obligation so the money isn’t really that big a deal.

Kind of shocked than Stern killed the deal...

Like it or not, the trade seemed pretty fair. It’s not like the Lakers were giving up scrubs for CP3, they were losing Odom and Pau…One could argue LA would actually be worse off after the deal (until you realize they were also going after Howard in the grand scheme of things).

I’ve seen much more lopsided deals…Blocking this one doesn’t make much sense.

by 7footer on Dec 8, 2011 7:38 PM MST via mobile reply actions

I think had Bynum been included, it wouldnt have been blocked. Plus, I think it looks bad that the first major move after a lockout in which competitive balance between small market and big market teams was apparently a huge deal, would be a small market team giving up their superstar to a big market team.

by 7footer on Dec 8, 2011 7:49 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

I think it really hurts that it’s been rumored that Boston would give up Rondo or New York would give up Amar’e for Paul. At first glance, those seem like the better, more fair trades.

Plus letting the lakers keep Bynum keeps open the option of them getting both Paul and Howard which seems ridiculous given what the lakers have to trade. Trading basically Bynum, Odom and Gasol for Paul and Howard really seems to throw competitive balance out the window.

I don’t think Paul makes the lakers better necessarily, but I’m not comfortable with the trade if Bynum isn’t included. I don’t want Howard and Paul in LA together with Kobe. If one of them goes there, thats fine, and I’d prefer that it be Paul rather than Howard.

Thing is

Bynum was out for the season. I believed we could have beat the 07-08 Lakers in 6 or 7 games had we not traded for Shaq.

That trade was more about getting rid of a whiny player who was causing stress in the lockerroom in return for a player that would bring everyone joy (except half the fanbase). It also may have had something to do with us matching up against the Spurs.

Gosh, we were 3-1 against them that season. I thought for sure Shaq would finally get us past them. I mean the guy did a great job guarding Duncan and then the playoffs came and Timmy decides he wants to shoot threes? That’s like devoting to a plan that would stop Channing from hitting threes and then all of a sudden he becomes a great post player!

As you can see, I believe we still could have taken the Lakers with Marion, but not the Spurs. That’s one of the reasons why the Shaq trade was made. It wasn’t to matchup with the Lakers like the guy said above, but to get rid of a whiny player and matchup with the Spurs.

To the trade and take out Pau or Odom, the NBA let’s the trade go through fine, because theoretically, it takes the Lakers out of the Howard race which is why this whole trade is being blocked in the first place IMO.

Which means the deal will probably die when LA figures out it’s a bad one if Howard’s not joining Paul.

I hadn't even thought about the Lakers saving $ in that deal

This quote from Gilbert is great:

I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.)

The players being swapped seemed like an okay deal, but saving picks and money and Bynum and getting a trade exception meant the Lakers would also land Howard (or at least have the capability to add another max-level player). Although it is interesting that its the first time the league has bothered to squash a Big Three birth…

new uniforms?

one can only hope! our uniforms are easily the worst in the league!

by forget on Dec 8, 2011 11:03 PM MST up reply actions

likely not

I know what you’re talking about though. According to Coro, Steve Kerr and the group were working on new uni’s prior till they left. Then the new staff came, scrapped what they had done and started on their own new unis. Not much else is known.

This whole “Suns on the Rise” marketing thing Sarver just started might include new uniforms for the 2012-13 season. It’s totally speculation on my part, but it would make sense.

It would be great to come out of the 2012 summer with a contending roster and new uni’s.

However, we’d really only have like one shot with Nash being 80,000 years old and all. This is their plan and I’m not against it, but I’m also not against trading Nash and tanking for a high lottery pick either (as many of you already know). Now would be the time to do it. So, it’s either rebuild now or wait one precious year to contend. Both are risky.

I don't understand why they don't just up it to two years with a player option?

IT’S GRANT HILL!

Plus, don’t they want to contend next year? Isn’t that their plan? Don’t we need Nash to do that? If Hill goes, Nash becomes unhappy and when Nash is unhappy, that usually means things suck! We got to experience an unhappy Nash in 08-09 and last year. It wasn’t good.

Here it is
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7316232/phoenix-suns-cut-vince-carter-lockout-ends

Friday means that Phoenix would only have to pay $4 million to Carter and likely ensure that the Suns avoid luxury-tax territory this season even after trying to complete the re-signing of Grant Hill and moves with other potential free agents.

The Suns’ plan, sources said, is to bring back Hill if possible and make a playoff run this season, then proceed to the summer of 2012 armed with salary-cap space to make major upgrades to the roster.

Sources said the Suns have yet to receive any indication from star guard Steve Nash that he wants to be dealt to a contender, which is why management clings to the hope that the two-time MVP — who is also headed for free agency in July 2012 — will retire a Sun.

If it goes under the rules and it doesn’t violate any law, then it works. You don’t change laws and rules by the ear when the situation doesn’t fit your interests and “public views”. That’s as wrong as it gets.

Furthermore, what gives Stern the right, as an owner, to block that? I thought the team general managers were responsible for trades.
