Phoenix Suns Keep Grant Hill for 2012 Season
The 2012 cap space is alive and well for the Suns, who spent about $11-12 million this week on 3 players but not a dime past this season.
Grant Hill is staying with the Suns, per Paul Coro of azcentral.com:
The Suns considered Hill their top free agency priority and showed it in spending on Hill, who is the second oldest player in the league at 39 (by a day to Kurt Thomas). Hill has been a bargain for the Suns, making $10.1 million over the past four years as a productive starter one of the top defenders in the league.
His return was essential to the Suns' pursuit of defensive improvement and the happiness of Steve Nash in the last year of his contract. The Suns also want Hill's leadership influence on the rest of the team and it is believed he could have a long-term role with the organization beyond his retirement as a player.

Beautiful. The FO is doing a great job. Preserve that cap space. I wonder if they told Grant they intend to keep Nash. If he is traded, I’d imagine Hill would be pretty upset. In any event, love the Brown, Pietrus and Hill moves. Not sure about Bassy. But great job so far, new FO.

Good one Suns and thank you for not insulting Grant by low balling him.
Hopefully Chilly gets more consistent minutes and helps Grant rest on those back to back to back games.

Not sure where the space came from but definately not a lowball figure for a 39 year old. Looks like we have Nash happy for at least one more season.

Trade

Orlando might need to make bigger moves than that if they want to keep Dwight… but I’m assuming that ship has sailed already.

Very happy to read this.
The Suns are executing their plan so far: a competitive team for this year, a ton of cap space next year, keep Nash for the final year of his contract. We can question whether that’s a smart plan or not. I happen to think that it is. But then, as I’ve written here before, I will never support a “let’s suck as much as possible” strategy for my team.

I'm with you.
I think the Suns are doing the best they can. They should be somewhat competitive this year and have a shot at the playoffs. Then next year they’ll have a ton of money. Now whether or not that money is put to good use is a different story altogether, but I’ll still vote to take this route than tanking.

Really happy
Agreed the Suns have made all the moves I would have realistically hoped for. Pick up a SG to replace VC, get rid of VC and Pietrus, keep Hill, and as we do every year, pick up another backup PG we think can backup Nash, but will ultimately disappoint us.
Well, in all honesty

I’m still hoping Lopez figures out how to be more of a contributor consistently. He really should be the backup center with what we have invested in him. Maybe I’m just naive’.
Probably start the Beas at the 4 and Channing can come off the bench and play the 4 or the 5
And markieff can play some at the 4 when Channing is at the 5. I’m kinda leaving at robin but I’m just assuming he plays bad lol

Rosterbation!
Not a big rosterbator (sure, that’s what they all say) but here’s two that keep popping up in my head:
Gortat, Lopez, Dudley for Dwight and Hedo (Suns also waive rights to Brooks). Suns end up right around $70m
Lopez for Greg Oden (I think the Suns have enough in remaining trade exceptions to do this straight up).
The Oden thing would be dependent on training staff looking him over and opining they could get him up and running again.

I don't see Dwight re-signing with us and our current roster.

Hey Seth, have you heard any news about players being invited to training camps? Almost every other team has been loading up on former and current D-League and fringe NBA players for their training camp rosters, yet the Suns haven’t done anything. Who are we bringing in for training camp fodder? Looking at the roster, a young wing to take the 13th spot might be wise since we only have 4 between the 2 and 3 now.

Well he does have Deron Williams there.
And isn’t he friends with Jay-Z?
Once you go Nash, you won't wanna go back.
Yeah, NJ actually has something going if they get a beast big man.
That might get Williams to stay. They are moving to Brooklyn, one of the best PG-C duos we’ve seen in a while, as well as a couple decent role players.

Imagine CP3 and Dwight on defense.
Paul could shoot the passing lanes all game long since he had Dwight to erase his mistakes behind him. He’d average 4 spg.

A mediocre team this year and a lot of cap space next year? Maybe they gave a payday for grant this year in hope for a reasonable contract next year if they can find a good place to spend their cash.
I was almost convinced he was out the door...
But i am very much relieved at this piece of news.

Ture.
I was just talking about value. The ratio between what they are being paid and what they provide is very similar to Grant’s ratio IMO, just on a different scale.

Has Grant done enough in the last few years to revive a chance for the Hall of fame….?

Grant could enter the HoF based on his college career alone
but his multiple citizenship awards in the NBA probably seal the deal.
And then there’s his coaching career…

?...does BAMF's return as well as the other moves the FO has made have visions of playoffs dancing in anyone's head?
As an eternal optimist, I’m thinking a lower playoff seed & an unfortunate early exit unless they do some amazing lab work and produce some of that chemistry they had in 09-10! Still need a scorer who wont have to rely on Nashty to feed him constantly, IMO…

Suns roster set now?
It looks to me like the Suns have a complete roster now assuming Telfair and Brown sign right? I doubt we see any more moves except training camp fodder at this point.
Wait
We haven’t signed them yet? So does that mean that despite agreeing to a deal we can still say no and sign someone else?
Don't trade Dudley!
God I hope so...
Signing Telfair after Brown seems ridiculously unnecessary…go after Arenas.

Arenas, if we got him on the cheap would be much, much better than Telfair.
Who knows what our Training staff could do for his body? And who knows what Hill and Nash could do for his mind?

Exactly.
Plus he would be a helluva backup for Nash especially when we inevitably have to sit him for a game or two during one of our many back-to-back-to-backs.

Right.
Seems like a guy like him just needs a place to play where he can essentially redeem himself in the eyes of the league. Reading Coro is sounds like Brown is doing a similar thing only for breakout potential.

PHX would be a prime spot to reinvent his game. Play next to or behind Nash as either a SG or backup PG.

What was the deal for Pietrus?
I heard we sent him to Toronto, but didn’t hear if we had to include picks for them to take him, or if we got anything back.

I'm happy as long as we didn't have to give away a pick

Nope.
Basically a straight cash dump, and the extra space was used on Grant.

it doesn’t work that way, technically. Grant would have been re-signed with Bird Rights, independent of the Pietrus trade. Pietrus trade will yield a trade exception that can be used to acquire another player (but not in combination with other trade exceptions or players. Only draft picks and cash.)
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I prefer to think of it as us using the space on Grant. That makes it seem like we got something back for Peaches.

You could think of it as
we got Brown, Telfair and a conditional second round pick for Pietrus, since the TPE he’ll bring in is pretty darn close to the value of the MLE we spent on those two.
borderline adequate
Did the Suns just pay Grant 2 years salary this year
