Big Interview with Gortat in Polish papers
Not sure why I'm doing it, maybe I am bored at work, but there is a huge interview with da Hammer on Gazeta.pl. I will translate some the most interesting parts for you guys, as there is more to The Hammer then you know ;)
On being recognized in Phoenix:
He met with the journalist in an appartment building where he lives. The elevator guy looks at Gortat for a while and goes:
-Don't you play for the Suns?
-Yep.
-... and what's your name?
- Grant Hill!
:)
On double-doubles and January Hammertime
"I don't think it will end, I'm not a fluke. I just see in what kind of cage I was kept in Orlando. Now I'm in Phoenix, I'm 26 and in my prime, maybe it was meant to be - be the sub for the best center in the league for 3 years, get clobbered every day by the toughest guy on earth, and then when I still feel great physically be able to show my game.
Orlando was a cell or a good school?
There was a lot of players in the NBA who signed big contracts early in their career, were thrown into deep water and drowned. I experienced a lot of things in Orlando - there were games where I played 20-30 minutes deep in the play-offs, I played in the Finals. In the early seasons I have learned a great deal, I had a great coach who taught me the defensive mentality and on-court discipline. That shaped me as a player and helps me now, also, because I didn't play much I have huge hunger to play. I had a few great games in Phoenix but it is still not even close to being enough. I will murder and kill (wow, exact words) until I get bored (laughs). It's not gonna be soon, because I was sitting and watching for almost 4 years. It's payback time now...
Why such discipline? Why are you so stubborn?
After my parents I guess. They always told me it will be a problem down the road. But on the other hand - when I have a goal, I will do 100% to reach it, even of the road is long. My mom told me I will get bored by sports, but each day I walked 20 minutes each way for my soccer training. I'm a hardworker after my parents too. I like to be tortured in training, again and again. My coach in Cologne (Germany) taught me that. He always told me that hard work got him where his at. It's important that I started playing Basketball very late and I had this hunger all the time. Other players at 18 were already tired and bored, because it was their 5-6 year of training and I couldn't wait to practise, I often came to the facility 1,5 hours before the actual training. In Germany I was also given a whole lot of theoretical knowledge and I wanted to know more and more. After all these years donkey work is just a habit...
You have always dreamed of the NBA? When you were 20 did you think you will once play there?
No. Not at all. I remember watching the 2005 Finals at 4 at night and thinking - there is no chance I will play there. I always said it was my dream, but along the way I was never really sure it would happen. A year later I took part in a camp for tall guys where I handled players like Johan Petro, Mile Ilic, other guys in higher regard than me. That's when NBA scouts started talking about my physical abilities. It got me going, but I had my doubts when the Magic sent me back to Europe after another Summer League.
Is this streak (end of January) a new chapter of your career? How much is Nash helping?
Absolutely, a lot of people discovered that Marcin Gortat can impact the number of games his team wins. His not a star, but a player that has to be taken into account on offence and defence. Nash is at least 50% of Gortat. But not everyone playing with Steve earns double-doubles (there you go, finally a little head-butt for Lopez)... I think that unlike Lopez, without Steve I would get a few second chance points, some tip-ins, some garbage points. Still, without Nash I would be a completely different player on this team.I don't get many balls with my back to the basket in this offense because it slows us down and we want to run and pass as much as possible.
So PHX is the best place you could have gone to?
Absolutely. Before the transfer we talked with my agent about different options, he mentioned the Rockets a lot, who were asking about me even after I went to PHX. In the coming years they might achieve greater succes than us, because they have a much younger team and our vets - Nash, Hill, Carter - are moving towards the end of their careers. Sooner or later we might hit bottom and start rebuilding. But I am extremely happy to be here. Steve is here and we run a lot. I love it.
What happens when you start playing worse?
That's a major question. Bad games will come because it's part of the job, but the key is how you react to it, dig yourself out of the hole. The journalists will surely write that the truth about Gortat came out, that all in all he is mediocre at best, that he had a lucky streak. But it's like driving the car really. The fact that you had a collision doesn't mean you forgot how to drive.
And the future? 2-5-7 years from now?
I completely stopped thinking about this. I think one game at a time. Now, I want to improve my shot blocking, cause I slipped in that department lately. I want to remain shooting at a good percantage, rebound and add some more blocks. My agent is probably thinking about the new contract, but I don't.
An NBA transfer
The funny part is that until the final moment - nothing changes for you and the team. The coach gives you scouting report for the next game, eventhough he already knows that probably you will be playing for someone else. When they told me about the trade the day we played Dallas - I was ecstatic. I really dreamed about this, but I couldn't scream it out loud. I didn't really care that much for Championships. It's no fun when you sit on the bench and watch other players run the floor that you know are not better then you are. They drop 20 points and I sit and cheer for the guys on the floor. That sucked.
Otis Smith told me about the trade and thanked me for a mutually beneficial few years. I was so emotional... I only asked who is going the other way, hoping it was Lopez and that I would start right away and get all his minutes.
His new number
Of course I didn't want the 4! I asked about 13, if I could buy it from Steve. I told him I will buy it for 50.000 bucks and he told me to forget about it (laughs). Then I wanted 7, because it was Beckham's number in ManU and they told me it's hanging from the ceiling thanks to Kevin Johnson. Then I thought about 8 - oen of my mentors in Germany, Zoran Kukic wore that one, But Channing wouldn't trade. So I picked nr 4 in memory of Obradovic. Now I believe it was a bad choice... I will probably change it to 57 - the number I was drafted with - for next season. Nobody plays with a 57.
How was the new locker room?
Weird, cause I thought I knew who was who, who was the star, who was the mean guy... Also, one has to understand that I came here to take away someone's hard work and minutes. And I had to change my approach - I really wanted to bust out of that Orlando cage. I became buddies with Goran and Channing real fast. Now, I love the atmosphere, the guys.
After one of the games you started talking critically about Suns defence. Spoko about defence in Orlando, said you could help other players understand a few things. Wasn't that a little too early, a little out of line?
I don't think so. I wasn't talking about specific guys. After a while one of the guys from the coaching staff told me that it was a good thing somebody finally vocalized the team's problems, just told me that it's a shame it was me, cause I was knew and it probably won't sit well with some of the teammates. But I don't like beating around the bush. When I go to the locker room after a game we got destroyed by a bad team on our home court what am I supposed to say? Good effort but we lacked a little energy? Maybe some guys can talk like that. I can't. We were terrible and I said it straight up. When I play bad, I always say honestly that I got killed by the other guy.
Start in PHX and his biggest advantages
I didn't take advantage of my opportunity at first, I got a lot of minutes but I didn't play well. So I kind of took a step back, concentrated on my game and what I can do better. I think my biggest ascet is being athletic and my physical abilities. There is a lot of centers in the NBA who are as good as me at either speed, stamina, coordination or hops, but not neccessarily many with all these combined.
PnR with Nash
I play PnR pretty well because I started playing basketball quite late and I had a lot of holes in my technique. So that was one of the easiest plays if you were really consistent and focused. It started in Germany. It's 50/50 between the PG and the guy who sets the screen. The screen has to be very tough and the pass has to be well timed. But it takes two to tango. Screens are not easy as well. I have to block the othe teams guard and try to stop them by any means neccessary. And most of them play dirty - some hold my leg with their arms to stop me from rotating towards the basket. Some try to hit me in the jewels. Timing and finding a lane to the basket is more important than speed. We do it quite well with Nash but I am not even half way to being perfect at it.
Stamina issues
That's new. I didn't play that much in Orlando so I am adjusting. But I try to do a lot of stretching before the game... And adrenaline is helping, I get gassed soemtimes but I always try to give 110%.
If you could play like the end of this month for a whole season you could be an All Star next year (typical Polish question - we always want more and more and more...)
It's way to early for that, I don't even think about it. Sure, I would love to play in the All Star Game, but well... maybe 2-3 years from now, when I am getting closer to the end of my contract to get some attention... :)
[sorry for spelling, and also, I didn't go word for word, so I might have freestyled a bit once or twice...]
Enjoy

Awesome, Piotr.
We’re lucky to have Marcin, and I hope he’s a Sun for a long time. I love this guy’s attitude and work ethic.

Thanks, Piotr! You made my Monday morning.
Gortat’s candor is refreshing. I also love the way he talks about his hunger and willingness to work. Have to wonder about his relationship with Lopez, though, because he’s essentially saying “I’m better than Lopez (no matter what Seth Pollack says :-) and I’m taking his minutes.” And, so far, he’s done that.

i was thinking the same
man if those two start fighting they’re gonna have to evacuate the building…
still, I think something must be lost in the translation because when one of the other of them does something great out on the court, his counterpart is almost always the first one up off the bench to give them their props
hopefully it’s nothing more than healthy competition..
Yup.
Gortat is all for healthy competition. Maybe I didn’t translate well, but most of this was said BEFORE he came to PHX. Also these are words written by a Polish journalist who probably added a few touches to get a lot of attention for Gortat back in Poland.

I had doubts
Nice post. Thank you for translating!
I had my doubts about Gorat, but he has proven me wrong. I’m glad he is a Sun. I wish RoLo would get with the program though. He’s younger and has quite a bit of room to grow.
Love it!
thanks so much.
Interesting the dynamic between Gortat and Lopez, at least from Gortat’s POV. Gentry is definitely giving the right guy more minutes.
Also interesting is the mention of Houston, and how their window is open longer because they’re younger. This will be true as long as Nash and Hill are the main guys. At some point, Gortat might realize he’s one of the core going forward, instead of a guy looking for someone else’s core group to join.

definitely
I would love to see the Lopez/Tots combo for years to come…
Tots…
so would Lopez be the “hash browns” to Marcin’s “Tots”?
or is that somehow innapropriate to ask?

Crap...
I knew this would happen…
Let’s stick to the half-truth that Gortat is the only Polish player in the NBA. There is a small asterisk (we like asterisks, don’t we) but it is a small asterisk in fact so small that you can disregard it altogether. It is exactly 0.7 PPG 0.7 RBD 0.45 TO in 4.6 carrer minutes.
Because if we start talking about the asterisk then we also start talking about Lampe and I am going to shoot myself…

Maciej Lampe!
I remember him. The Suns got him when they traded Starbury to the Knicks.
At the time, I thought/hoped that Lampe was a Gortat-type player (a hidden talent wasting away on the bench). I remember ESPN gushing about Lampe when the Knicks drafted him…
…but it turns it was just a directionless window (post-Starbury/pre-Nash) talking.
Piotr, please don’t go shooting yourself.
Very informative interview. Thanks for sharing.
We also had the Polish Rifle

Gortat seems like a “speak your mind”-type of guy. Hope that doesn’t offend anyone important.
Well usually it's good
but in his Polish Europe Team games and with Orlando, he sometimes overdid it, for example the whole Van Gundy affair.

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

well maybe as soon as they get running water under control Poland can focus more on entertainment technology. I’m sorry, I had to say it since you gave Alex so much crap:) Do you watch all of the games online or do you have satellite? just curious:)
Actually I live in the Netherland
for over 21 years, I have both nationalities. NBA is only transmitted on 1 (paid) channel in the Netherlands and it’s always the big teams, Bball just isn’t popular in Holland (f****ing weed smokers). I have been thinking about subscribing to NBA TV but it isn’t a question of money, more a time issue. Phoenix games start usually between 3-5 in the morning and end at 6-8 in the morning. If I don’t stay up, I can download the game for free that’s how the net works.
The only reasonable solution is getting hooked on speed/cocaine and stay up ;)

Oh and the Zinger is way to hot for European standards. Christina Aquilara failing the national anthem at the Superbowl, that’s hot. Overweight Americans talking bball are NOT hot. I am really thinking about spending my holiday money for a ticket to Phoenix and teaching you how a 5’6 white Earl Boykins CAN play ball. Amen.

Ok, one normal question
I don’t want to be the Polish Suns board idiot, so I have a normal question. Everybody is focusing on this season but what about 1-4 years? Gortat is likely to stay, he is not the guy to give up on a team. But we will lose Nash, Hill and Carter because of their age/contract/trades. The reason doesn’t really matter.
How will we build a winning team around Gortat/Lopez, Frye and…. still Dudley, Warrick or Dowdell? Which players will need to stay in the top 8?
Alea iacta est!
Well.
We seem to have a bunch of guys who are good enough to fill the 4th – 8th best player on a team role, and maybe a couple who can fill the 3rd best player role. The tricky part will be that #1 and #2 player roles. Guess we’re about to find out if building a roster from the back is going to somehow work.

"Were the type of team that’ll win alot of street fights" Steve Nash 1-29-11 vs. Celtics
we are now 3.5 games out of 6th, and only 2 behind in the loss column to any of the teams ahead in that race, and..
5 out of 5th, and 3 games behind in the L column there.
People need to stop focussing on Memphis and Portland as the truly most vulnerable are Denver and Utah…we are only two behind in the loss column to both of them. If we beat Utah tomorrow, make that one to them with the tiebreaker in our possession, so we will have almost passed them already. Denver is also playing very bad right now (better at home) but are starting to look like a team that is really dysfunctional, ravaged by the Melo affair, and the complex cast of charachters on that team.
As I have been saying all along, those guys need to be the focus. and if we can play well and not have Eve Black show up too much, we can pass both of those teams, and get a playoff spot.
Will be interesting to see tomorrow night as I expect the team psyche to have been damaged by the loss to the Kings. This one will be a real gut check, and is the key game of the season to date,
Interesting thought on the upside of Gortat
I don’t know if all of you guys realize that Marcin started playinng Basketball when he was 18. Which pretty much means he has been playing it only for 8 years.
He has natural athletic ability and coordination, comes from a family of proffesional athletes and has good work ethic. Also…
In Germany he was still pretty raw, was rather learning the basics. After not even 4 years of playing Basketball he got to the NBA and it turned out he wasn’t an overrated tall prospect like say… Cezary, he was the real deal with a lot of talent for the game, running and athletic ability etc.
When he arrived in the NBA – he was put in a cage. Literally – every time anyone in Orlando was asked about Gortat’s role – they said hustle, rebound, set screens. Defense. That was all he was asked to do, apart from the occasional pick and roll. Which also means that was exactly what the coaching staff concentrated on in his training. His offense was not important.
This his his first season as a player who is important for his team on both ends. FIRST. And look how much he has improved already – his free throw stroke looks much more fluent, his mid-range jumper is already looking OK. And you have to realize – that before he entered his cage in Orlando HE DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO DO THIS. He didn’t turn it off, it was never really there. Nobody put enough emphasis on that part of his game throughout his entire career.
And all of a sudden – his FT% is almost 80%! His jump shots form outside 10ft are dropping above 50%… I know he is not a scoring machine. All I am saying is we seriously don’t know where his roof is.
This is the first season in his career he is asked to score, he is probably learning quite viciously new post moves, balance, stuff like that. The reason he looks awkward on some of those tries is not that he is a stiff, it’s because he is in the middle of a crash course.
I know he was asked to carry the Polish National Team also on offense but nobody really thaught him how. 10 training sessions won’t do the trick. I know nobody told him not to learn this in his own time, but think about it, if a guy is giving 110% in his 1-on-1 sessions with Howard and the whole staff emphasizes his defense – how much time and effort you have left to practise offense “after hours”?
What I think is this: we will see Marcin Gortat – The Final Product sometime next season and I am dead serious – by then he might be the best C in Suns history, in fact he can be a top 10 center in this league. He just needs some time, dedication and a lot of playing time. Right now, he has all of these so I am seriously giddy about Gortat as a Sun in years to come.

One quick think before someone calls me a Gortat ass-kisser ;)
These are his higlights (and bloopers…) from the Kings game.
Some observations:
1. 0:24 – this is how our rebounding looks like. Gortat contests Dalambert, Channing comes to help, but he is late, he is also late to check his guy on the other side of the basket who grans an offensive rebound. Gortat somehow stops him from scoring and gets a lucky foul call. Who was supposed to box out? When they are all trying to challange shots. I say let Gortat try going 1-on-1 with his guy ( if he is not Howard or Bogut) and concentrate on boxing out your man. And that goes for both forwards.
2. 2:50 – why not more often? Give him the ball in the post. His jumper is looking better and better. I would give him at least 4-5 shots like this per game. And if they start doubling him up – we have great shooters to burn them from long range. Maybe this is a solution for 4th Q letdowns?
3. 3:03 – same here. It’s an ISO! Yup! Turns out that he is faster than 80% of other C’s. If he faces up, then proceeds to get the defender out of position with an upfake, makes space for a post move and finishes with a nice fade away.
4. 3:20 not that I didn’t enjoy the look on his face after that miss, but there was a lot of contact in the air. Not sure, but coould that have been a foul? Still, he misses some of those, he’ll probably stop or at least cut down on the number after a while. He is finally getting more touches and more attempts. He already attempted more shots with PHX than in the whole second season in Orlando.
5. 6:54 – one of many plays with Nash (I don’t even write about all the succesive PnR’s they had). Nice finish with a hesitation, turnaround right hand hooker.
Sure most of this looks awkward, he is no Olajuwon but he is slowly expanding his O and getting comfortable with different looks. I say the 20-12-2 mark is up for grabs if he can get 12-15 shots a game or gets to the line 2-3 times a night.

You left out all the times he failed to box out himself
While you were pretty quick to jump on Channing about it.
Achievement is its own reward, pride obscures it.
