The March Revenge Tour 2011 Edition Begins - Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns, 8:30 p.m. NOT on TNT

Aaaahhh the memories.  You remember when we last saw the Nuggets (37-27) way back on January 11th?  Remember how we came out of the gate just absolutely seeping awesomeness from every orifice?  Yup, in the 1st quarter we dropped 32 points on one end and held the Nuggets to just 20 points on the other and jumped out to a quick 12 point lead.  You remember?

Well, if you really remember and you're not just pretending to have a semi-photographic memory like Scott Howard then you will recall that we suffered our worst loss since 2006, falling 132-98 for a 34 point shellacking.  After shooting something like 30% from the field in the first quarter, the Nuggets finished shooting better than 60% for the game while Phoenix went 7-22 (.318) from behind the arc and pathetically shot 36.8% from the field.  Our season average is over 47%.  It's time to start the revenge tour, 2011.  They punked us, pushed us down, put their stinky foot on our face and proceeded to point and laugh while they ran the score up.  It's time for payback.

This game was supposed to be broadcast nationally on TNT tonight, that's why it's a late starting game (8:30 p.m. AZ Time).  But the powers that be got wind that Bright Side of the Sun was officially declaring the start of their 2nd annual 'March Revenge Tour' and decided that tonight's game was just going to be too physical, too bloody, too dirty and too scrappy to air on national airwaves.  That's the real reason why you'll have to check this guide and find out what obscure back-alley-hidden channel our Suns can be peeped on.

Star-divide

What's a 'March Revenge Tour'?

Get with the program. Last year Scott Howard began the tradition - this year, it's up to the Suns to make it an annual reality.  Good teams peak at the right time, that's why the Suns made the 3rd seed and went to the Western Conference Finals last season, we peaked at the right time.  You make a run after the all-star break and carry your momentum into the Playoffs - like the Spurs and Lakers have a reputation of doing.

Random Thought: Sometimes I ask myself, "I know that Gentry coached under Pop (Greg Popovich) and under Mike (D'Antoni)... could it be that Gentry has more Pop in him than Mike D?"  Meaning - can he get his team to peak charging into the playoffs as opposed to just having an amazing regular season and kind of fizzing out when the big games come?   Well - he and his team will have to answer that themselves because they will need a miraculous finish to the season this year just to make the playoffs.

Back to the matter at hand.  Maybe it's because I just watched the movie 'Faster' with Dwayne Johnson (Short Plot: Dude's brother is murdered by other dudes - dude goes to jail - dude gets out of jail and proceeds to gloriously hunt and murder all other dudes who originally murdered dude's brother) but I am definitely in the mood for revenge.

8 of the 12 teams we will face for the remainder of this month have dealt the Phoenix Suns a loss in our last match-up with them.

3/10/11 - Denver Nuggets (1-2 = Suns season record) - Loss on 1/11/11, 132-98

3/13/11 - Orlando Magic (0-1) - Loss on 11/18/10, 105-88

3/20/11 - LA Clippers (1-1) - Loss on 12/26/10, 108-103

3/22/11 - LA Lakers (1-2) - Loss on 1/5/11, 99-95

3/27/11 - Dallas Mavericks (1-2) - Loss on 2/17/11, 112-106

3/29/11 - Sacramento Kings (1-2) - Loss on 2/13/11, 113-108

3/30/11 - OKC Thunder (1-2) - Loss on 3/6/11, 122-118 OT

As you can see, it's also an opportunity for the Suns to even the score literally with these teams given that for the season we are down a game to each with the exception of the Clippers.

We are undefeated this season against the four teams we will face this month that aren't revenge games - Houston, New Orleans, Golden State and Toronto.

Let's get this party Started.

Back to Tonight's Match-Up

So we've called on the weeping willow and conjured an image of vengeance as we remember the bully beat-down we took from the Nuggets now nearly two months ago.

There is a slight difference and reason to be positive about tonight's rematch... tempered with some reality.

The Good news:

Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups and Anthony Carter were traded to the Knicks

The Bad news:

Carmel Anthony, Chauncey Billups and Anthoney Carter were traded to the Knicks

Say What?  Yeah, it doesn't make sense right?  Or does it... Since the trade the Nuggets are 5-2, their defense is improved allowing now only 94.3 PPG as opposed to 105.2 pre-trade.   Another crazy thing that's actually not crazy..  they are averaging higher assists per game (24 v. 21.2 pre-trade), more rebounds (46.1 v. 40.9 pre-trade), more steals (8.29 v. 6.86) and consequently more fast break points (16.4 v. 12.9) and more points off turnovers (17.1 v. 14.9).

Maybe these increases have something to do with the fact that the ball doesn't stick as much as it did when Carmelo was in town.  Maybe it also has something to do with how quick and hard Ty Lawson plays, maybe it also has something to do with removing a rotting corpse in the locker room and planting a flower garden with snap dragons and lilacs.  These Denver boys are playing hard-nosed basketball and giving 100%, 100% of the time.  You couldn't say that when Melo was the face of the team.

More Good News:

Lot's of Denver dudes are hurt.  Danilo Gallinari is out with a fractured toe, Al Harrington (listed probable) has a jacked up achilles, Wilson Chandler (also listed probable) has a sprained left ankle and key here is that Arron Afflalo is listed OUT with a left hamstring he strained in Denver's game against the Clips last Saturday.

This Afflalo news is good for Suns fans because he has been the go-to guy for Denver since Melo's departure, and he's the same guy that burned the Suns for 30+ in our 30+ beat-down.  Even more encouraging - take a listen to what Denver Stiffs writer Jeffrey Morton had to say about the team after their loss to the Clippers on Saturday.

While the Nuggets defense has vastly improved, it can't overcome a horrific "team shooting" night. Without a dynamic scorer it's up to the entire team to step it up (Arron Afflalo left the game with a hamstring injury) to pull the team out. The scoring by committee has worked out so far, but when the team collectively goes in the toilet offensively it's going to be very hard to climb your way back in every game by just playing good defense. They almost did it tonight, but they won't be able to do it every night.

The Bad News:

Channing Frye is out and Nene is a beast.

Though we can hope that with Afflalo out the Nuggets will struggle offensively, there is no guarantee that somebody else who is hungry won't step up... Though J.R. Smith has been on a little shooting slump - he's usually a Suns Killer, so I'd watch out for him.  There is also no guarantee that we'll see the kind of offensive production we saw from both Vince carter and Hakim Warrick on Tuesday again tonight.

Our best chance to win this game is going to be on the defensive end and by taking care of the ball on offense and not allowing the quick Denver team to get out in transition because of turnovers.

The Bench mob will have a great impact in tonight's game if they can come into the game and be productive - Denver is thinner than it has been in the past, and though there was talk of Raymond Felton being an All-Star this year, I have a hunch that Aaron Brooks will have a definite speed advantage against him and be able to penetrate the lane at will.  Let's just hope his shooting is better than his home debut.

Individual Match-Ups

Steve Nash - Ty Lawson

Vince Carter - Gary Forbes

Grant Hill - Wilson Chandler (listed as probable)

Hakim Warrick - Kenyon Martin

Robin Lopez - Nene

"I feel like if anything I'm improving and not getting worse. I'm not right, but I'm getting there." Nash said about groin injury

BOTTOM LINE - SUNS NEED THIS WIN.

Don't fail me now - start this revenge tour off right and make Andrew over at the Stiffs put a foot in his mouth.

I've never liked the Nuggets.  They are on my 'least favorite NBA teams' list, so I'm always extra pumped for Denver games - I hope you are too.  Let's do it.

Yeah, this FSNAZ Plus thing is for the birds.

No HD channel on DirecTV. This will be the first time in about five years that I’ll be forced to watch a Suns game here at home in standard definition.

Well, enough whining…I just hope that our team can come out with a win. This will be a tough game for is against a suddenly rejuvenated Nuggets team. I hope Hak and VC can continue to beast, and that the rest of our team can find their rhythms tonight. We especially need Brooks to do better running the second unit, and I think he will.

Hey…i Live here in SoCal and have DirecTV as well. But the only Fox Sports games i get to watch are the Clippers and Lakers. Do you know if theres a way to just get the FSNAZ channel only?

everytime the SUNS play i’m forced to watch either on my cellphone or laptop…FML. I talked to my wife about moving to ARIZONA…but i got slapped. since shes a hardcore Laker fan. lol.

No, they black out all non-local NBA games...

It’s great having all of those channels for NCAA b-ball and football games because those are aren’t blacked out, but all pro sports are.

That’s how they get people to subscribe to League Pass.

Hey, it's on HD afterall!

Thanks to the guide Eutychus posted, I found that DirecTV is airing it in HD afterall. For anyone with DirecTV, tune to 693-1 for the game.

Damn you TNT!

looks like i’m gunna have to watch the game on the laptop again…

Anyways, i’m really excited about tonight’s game. Ty Lawson vs AB0 should be fun to watch. Both players are blazing fast! If Hack/Carter could continue to contribut the way they did last game…we should have no problem winning tonight. I see GHill shutting down JR Smith and or Gallinari. But real key for tonight’s game will be Rebounding and second chance points. If the Suns win in that category, the game is definitely ours.

Go SUNS!

Just read the Denver Stiffs preview

They really don’t seem very worried about the Suns at all. They don’t even see us as a threat to their playoff spot. I hope we railroad these mofos tonight. Although I like George Karl, I’ve never cared for his Nuggets teams….

The preview at Denver Stiffs is pretty bad

Half of the preview consists of how the Suns play small ball and how the Nuggets shouldn’t play down to that. How long has it been since these guys have watched a suns game? Doesn’t playing small ball mean you play smaller players out of position to gain an offensive advantage? Every player we field is listed at the position they play with the exception of the occasional time we play wings at SG.

by DJPitz on Mar 10, 2011 6:50 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

A lot of people don't realize how well Gortat has played for us.

Because they see Lopez in the starting lineup and than look at Marcin’s numbers and they’re only average, but when you look at his numbers with the Suns they actually look kind of good. They must not realize that he plays around 30mpg now. It’s not small ball when we got a Polish Hammer.

My uncle and I

have this inside joke with K-Mart and J.R Smith. We call them convicts because of all their tattoos. Whenever we see them play we’d joke that they play defense by shanking the player in the kidney and that’s how they get their steals haha. As for Birdman, he doesn’t really look like a convict so we say he listens to Slayer and owns a tattoo shop.

Sucks this won’t be on TNT so I’ll be stuck watching it online again BUT maybe it’s for the best since we always have a curse when we play on national TV.

As good as Billups is, the Knicks shouldn't have traded Felton.

If they just waited until the off-season they could have signed Carmelo while keeping Felton and Gallinari. Yea, there may not be a season next year, but the Knicks aren’t going to win the championship this year anyway.

key(s) to winning this game:

1.) Limit TOs, these thuggets are quick.
2.) Make wide-open shots.
3.) Don’t dare them to make open corner 3s.
4.) Points from the bench, someone needs to step up again not necessarily Carter or Hak (although another good showing from Carter would be awesome).

If we win tonight, we are 2 games back and we would be tied in the season series...

the next tie breaker is conference record which is close. So winning tonight gives us some chance to pass them.

This is another big one….

The Rock has like five lines the movie "Faster"

Good movie, nonetheless.

Anyways, I like the match ups we have…Yes, Nene is a beast but Lopez and Gortat are pretty damn good defensively. I think Kenyon Martin is going to have problems dealing with Hak’s speed and overall athleticism. Afflao is a defensive master and with him being out it really opens up more opportunities for VC to have another monster night. The key match up is the point guard battle…Nash/Brooks vs Lawson/Felton.

Lawson is small, quick, and a total dick and is going to get under Nash’s skin and probably get a few steals. The good thing is that Nash has 4-5 inches in height over Lawson. I think Nash should try to post up as much as possible….There is no way Lawson will be able to defend a turn around jumper from Nash. It will be fun seeing Brooks/Lawson on the court at the same time….Probably the two fastest point guards in the NBA.

I hope Childress gets some more game time this time around, I don’t like Grant Hill playing 40 minutes a game.

On a side note, does anyone find it bizarre that Denver thinks Lawson is a better starting point guard than Felton? Don’t get me wrong, Lawson is a good player but he’s kind of limited because of his size..Also, his passing game is not very good. Meanwhile, Felton pretty much can do everything you want a point guard to do, including being a good perimeter defender. I think Denver is a little too high on Lawson but that’s just my personal opinion. It seems like their building the team future to center around Lawson and Nene which are both good but that isn’t going to get you a championship.

Anyways, looking forward to tonight’s game so much. We’re going to need the bench to step up after last game’s dismal performance.

Lawson has kinda been killing us all year.

We beat them once in a Melo dominated game….but have lost to them 3 times including once in the pre season, 2 of which were total blowouts all somewhat more influenced by the guys that remained after the Melo trade.. we were much better and have been traditonally better against the Melo/Billups led Nugs…Hopefully since we are a much better team now we can overcome these issues, but we need to not allow them to get too many steals and fast break points…They are now another one of those “younger/faster” teams. Need to shut that down a bit.

by Aztiramtempe on Mar 10, 2011 6:52 PM MST up reply actions

Yes.

Look folks, as much as you may dislike or even hate Kobe for whatever reason, the fact is (and it is a fact) Kobe is an upstanding NBA player. He plays well, he plays hard, and he is one of the most mature players in the league. This may not have always been the case, but it is the case as of the last 4-5 years.

Garnett, on the other hand, is a son of a bitch. There is no way getting around it. The dude is a dirtbag asshole who (I hope) will never make the Hall of Fame and doesn’t deserve the devotion that even TIMBERWOLVES fans give him. There is little reason to respect anything about Garnett. He isn’t that good of a player, he is an asshole on the court whether he is winning or losing, he is an asshole off the court to average people, and, perhaps worst of all, his asshole-ness rubs off on others infecting them with his son-of-a-bitch disease. The whole Celtics roster is tainted. Even Ray Allen who – by all rights – is as upstanding a character as Nash is, has become a dirty bastard because of the influence of Garnett.

See I get that...

But the thing is, Kobe was young and an idiot. Its clear he was stupid, but he has also tried to atone for his idiocy. Garnett is a grown ass man and is still a god-damn mother f%^ker. Nothing will change that about him. He isn’t going to “mature” out of it. The dude is, fundamentally, an asshole.

In my book that is waaaay worse than a guy who made a mistake (albeit a big one, I admit) when he was young but “grew up” into a responsible person.
