The 13 Theory

Most people throughout the world believe that the number 13 is an unlucky number.  However in Arizona sports I believe it is the luckiest and also unluckiest number.  Four Arizona playing athletes have worn the number in recent years, Kurt Warner(Caridnals), Steve Nash(Suns), Rodrigo Lopez (Diamondbacks), and Sherdrick Bonner(AFL Rattlers).  When Kurt Warner was the Cardinals starting quarterback the team made the playoffs for two consecutive years. During those two years he had 4,583 and 3,753 yards passing and missed only one game. In the 2008-2009 season the Cardinals made the historic run to the Super Bowl with Warner as the leader wearing number 13.  While Warner was playing football in Glendale the future hall-of-famer Steve Nash was leading the Suns to countless playoff runs. He has had amazing statistics averaging over 10 assists per a game in every year except 08-09 and averaging over 15 points per a game every year. Since joining the Suns in 2004 the team has missed the playoff only once due to bad decisions in the front office.  He has won 2 MVP awards (he should have won 3), led the team deep into the playoffs, and been the leader and face of the franchise since the day of his arrival.  While Rodrigo Lopez is no superstar yet alone a star he only had a 7-16 record with his one year on the Diamondbacks.  His ERA was a lousy 5.00 and he had 111 earned runs against him.  Yet throughout the year he was pitching against the opposing teams ace and played on a horrible offensive Diamondbacks team that gave him almost no run support.  His effectiveness was decent enough to earn him a mention.  Sherdrick Bonner, you may be asking who is this guy? Well he was the starting quarterback for the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League from 1994-2006 leading the team to 5 Arena Bowls (championship game).  As an Rattler he threw for 40,980 yards, had 828 touchdowns, and recently had his number retired.  Bonner led the Rattlers to the 1994 and 1997 Arena Bowl victories and the 2002, 2003, and 2004 Arena Bowls yet lost.  While it may look like number 13 is a great number it has also had its drawbacks neither Kurt Warner or Steve Nash (still pending) won a championship while wearing number 13 in Arizona.  We have traded many memorable seasons for no championships with these two future hall-of-famers. While it may look like Bonner is the only one with championships that is wrong.  When the 2001 Diamondbacks won the world series Midre Cummings wore number 13 and when the Mercury won their championships in 2007 and 2009 Penny Taylor wore number 13.  It seems as though the lower down you look the better number 13 gets. So have those memorable seasons been worth no championships or should have Steve Nash and Kurt Warner wore number other than the infamous, "unlucky" number 13?
