Suns Lose Triple Overtime Thriller To Lakers 137-139

Ap-ab0152b7f6df42afbbc39e28556b752e_mediumTough loss, very tough to swallow. The Suns had multiple opportunities to win this one, but couldn't get it done. It was a good game nonetheless. It may have even been the best game all season. Too bad the Suns were on the bitter end of it. The better team won.

This loss pretty much sums up the story of the season for these Phoenix Suns; getting off to a decent start, falling away, making a comeback, taking a brief lead, giving it up again, fighting to get it back and never giving up, but falling short in the end.

Their record now stands at 35-34 behind the 37-34 Rockets and 39-32 Grizzlies who hold the 8th seed. When you look at teams like the Grizzlies you'll notice that they've managed to play through injuries (losing Rudy Gay) and upset some very good teams such as the Thunder, Mavs and even the Spurs. The Suns have been unable to do that losing close ones to the Thunder, Mavs, Lakers and even the Rockets and Hornets in recent weeks; can't say they haven't tried though.

Playoff chances are looking pretty dim and the Suns just can't seem to get that miracle when they need it. It doesn't mean all is over as they still have a chance and I'd be surprised if they just laid down and called it a season. They'll fight to the end because that is who they are, the Phoenix Suns.

Star-divide

Recap

Suns got off to a decent start and took a 31-27 lead by the end of the first. From 2nd quarter things kind of went down hill as they allowed the Lakers to score 39 and take a 6-pt lead into halftime. Both teams were on fire for much of the first half and not much defense was played at all.  Same story for much of the 3rd quarter only the Suns started missing their shots and the Lakers took a 21 point lead with about 4 minutes to go. At that point I thought, "Well, not surprised they're getting blown-out. I guess I can start writing the recap and than call it a night and get some extra sleep." Boy was I wrong!

Steve Nash led a comeback with 4 minutes to go in the 3rd, hitting three straight three-pointers. The Suns managed to tie the game at 101-101 and than Kobe checked in and led the Lakers to a 9-0 run. Suns didn't give up. Down 106-112 they tied the game to take it into overtime thanks to two threes from Frye and Grant Hill.

In OT the Lakers took a 121-118 lead with about 2.5 seconds to go and Lamar fouled Channing Frye on a 3-pointer. Frye once again came through in the clutch knocking down all three attempts to send it into a 2nd overtime.

In 2nd overtime, Frye hit another 3-pointer to give the Suns a 130-128 lead. Gasol was fouled and made two free- throws to tie it.

A 3rd overtime! This is where things got rough. Both teams were tired, but for the Suns players like Nash (37), Carter (34) and Hill (38); they can only go for so long before they run out of gas. Nash turned the ball over 2 times, Grant fouled out and Carter missed a wide open three. The worst mistake was when they were down 135-137 and refused to foul, letting Odom run off the clock and throwing it in to Kobe who scored over Channing. The Suns lost 137-139.

Highlights

Steve Nash- 20 assist, 19 points on 7-15 shooting.

Channing Frye- 32 points on 11-23 shooting and 14 rebounds.

Marcin Gortat- 24 points on 9-15 shooting and 16 rebounds.

Grant Hill- 11 and 10.

Aaron Brooks- 15 points on 6-9 shooting and 3 assist in only 13 minutes. Brooks played well in limited time and lived up to his "Laker Killer" title. We have to question if Gentry should have gone to him for a minute or two in the 2nd OT just to give Nash a breather?

Well, good night folks. Lets hope the bench comes up big against the Raptors tomorrow because we'll need em.

Phoenix Suns Triple OT Thriller, A Final Big Stage Encore From Nash And Hill -  SB Nation Arizona

I hope we are treated to more games like this from Nash and Hill in the playoffs. I hope these two guys are back in Suns' uniforms next season doing what only they can do. But if not and this triple overtime game on a Tuesday night with the entire NBA community watching has to be their encore performance, the show couldn't have ended in a better way...except for the final score.

everybody hated Carter for theses exact reasons in orlando as well

I mean yeah you guys got Gortat from us, but atleast we dont have to watch Carter waste away our time and the wonderful carreer he should have had, but he never will ive up to what he can truly accomplish beacuse simple HE DOESNT CARE

Carter does suck

I’m not getting on anyone here supporting him because he’s a Sun but lets call it for what it is….He sucks. Gm’s need to quit paying this guy 17 million because he’s no more then a role player who plays bad defense gives up on plays. He’s the “Randy Moss” of the NBA. I would agree is on the GM’s that pay this guy the money, but man this guy is just an average player when it comes down to it.

that's why they get paid so much

because they’re professionals who should “care” no matter what the circumstances.

Carter is receiving too much blame. He just shot poorly, but it’s Gentry’s fault for leaving him in on a bad shooting night.

a lot of bad choices...

decisions and so on. I just sucks that a Win tonight vs the Fakers would huge after we gave everything… i don’t want to say it but they are just a better team and we made a bunch of mistakes. BTW, we still need someone to get the ball out of Steve’s hands and make a play. A lot of last season playoffs mishap flashbacks: rebounding lapses after great defense and Nash gets shutdown with noone to pass the ball to dribbling his way to defeat…

"Who are we kidding?..."

by Larfleeze on Mar 23, 2011 12:12 AM MST up reply actions

If anything this one is on Gentry.

I don’t feel like nit-picking though. The Suns have lost many close ones because we don’t have a go to guy. Having one of those makes things much more easier. There is Channing, but he’s not really a guy you can give the ball and say, “take it to the rack and draw a foul”.

Don't trade Dudley!

better cough up the though and get us a consistent go to guy. Unless they want to go apeshit again and replace a 2 with a 5 or a 1 with .5 or a 4 with a 2.5.

what do you mean JUST?

an SG once-superstar should knock down some open jumpers

or, go figure, it they ain’t dropping no matter what – drive it to the basket

carter was happy to take and miss jumpers – 23 shots on less than 30% shooting – thats both bad shooting and bad-brain-freeze-decision making

Yeah he sucked this game

He started really well, I liked his body language and focus in the 1st quarter, but since then – he reverted back to his alter-ego.

by Raptorel on Mar 23, 2011 3:23 AM MST up reply actions

I disagree

IMO he didn’t change one bit.

Most of his shots were good looks. His motion looked OK, apart from some fade-away crazy bone headed jumpers – they were all GOOD DECISIONS.

but when you keep missing – you should just pass it to the other guy, or drive, or kill yourself… i dunno. he just seemed happy tp “play through it” for 35 minutes…

by Piotr Szczesniak on Mar 23, 2011 8:19 AM MST up reply actions

Well to be his advocate for a bit

He’s not quick enough nowadays to get all the way to the rim, hasn’t posted up at all in this game, and didn’t play the pick and roll, and if and when he goes to the rim, he never gets any fouls called on him. Part of that is that he shies away from contact, part is stupid refereeing.

LIke Amare was. You expect more from these guys becaue they are uber talented, but when it comes down to it they don’t reach their own hype. Amare was a great talent, but hell the Suns are doing better in a harder conference and the Knicks, well I had thought the Knicks would be .500 with Amare. Sarver, Amare, D’Antione, Joe Johnson, Gentry you look back on their respected careers and they have all had one common denominator…..Steve Nash

grant gets the ball and gortat makes screen for frye to take long 2 or even 3… same one as vs pacers… there was 2,5 left, enough for grant to get the pass to frye… will have to watch again to confirm that

Didn’t really want to make this known in the recap, but I believe Vince Carter was fouled by Gasol on his 3-point attempt which was the last shot of the 4rth quarter. I’d need to see a replay of it again, but he should have gotten 3 free throws. Than again he didn’t do a good job selling it when Gasol got him on his hand. Oh well, it’s over. I actually was at the Blazers-Wizards game tonight (drove down from Victoria), and the Blazers just look so damn good.

No matter what, can the front office just try to keep the core of this team together next year? Without VC, we’ll be bloody good. We’ve got a foundation (again) that we shouldn’t screw with!

And we’ll likely have a long summer holiday to get rested and have guys work on their individual weaknesses.

The sun sets the same way every day

An epic, heart-racing game indeed and we praise our player’s efforts, but a loss. It’s a letdown that we lost and seasons that had entertaining and bright 3OT games (2007, Nets-Suns) never ended up in a playoff victory. Of course one regular season game and general playoff success are not related, but after this game I think the sun is setting for the day. The sun is always so bright before it goes down for night. Every season we have our peak moments. 2010 our domination against the curse then loss against the lakers. 2007, having a chance to beat the spurs and David Stern and his angels don’t agree with us.
So close, yet so far.
P.S. I will remember this game for years, thank you Phoenix Suns

the only real problem they face is that too many things need to fall into place…and the chance of some kind of F up is large…but I am sorry this is not a lottery team. we are better than NOH and arguably better than Memph..And I don’t think the disparity with the rest of the west is that large, when Nash is playing like he is now. With this Nash (a nash which he haven’t seen for the better part of almost 2 months), and with this Gortat and Frye, and with BAMF and dudley, we are right there with anyone in the west.

we just lost too many games, with all the roster shake ups, experiments, and injuries..and we aren’t as deep as we were last year, in terms of multiple guys consistently delivering off the bench.

Played hard, but not smart down the stretch

I hate to call out Steve Nash, but I put this loss on his shoulders. Although he had some great passes (especially the one from the sideline when he was trapped), but he made numerous ball handling mistakes in the 3rd overtime and just went into “dribble heaven” on several possessions.

They played hard this game and had numerous opportunities to win. They just can’t seem to perform in clutch situations. Too many possessions without taking a shot or having VC shoot it (virtually the same as not having a possession).Too bad that this loss hurts and could be a season killer. If they had done business against the clippers, 76ers, pistons, and kings then the season would not be down to this.

The Kings and Pistons games hurt the most

Because those teams are awful

Suns came up clutch many times in this game, just one clutch play short.

I'm going to stay optimistic

This game should show the team that they can run with the best in the NBA. They need to win the game against the Raptors no matter what. If they do, we’ll still have a chance. I think we can catch New Orleans/Memphis. We just need to keep winning.

The team is looking awesome. They need to rest up, get the win, and keep on moving forward. If they do, they so got this.

Laker fans were courteous to yelling and such.

The game was very intense, each and every time it went to overtime it was just a crazy vibe.

the only thing that pissed me off was when they didnt foul kobe or odom, and when Gortat was just holding the ball at our last possession not passing, no one was even trying to get the ball either. just a bad moment, but being at the game was AAAAAMAZING.

From the Lakers blog
We’ll end things with a eulogy for Vince Carter. As the rest of his team was making all the right moves to give them the best chance for victory, VC just killed his team tonight. He scored 17 points, but it took him 23 shots to get there, including a woeful 2-13 from downtown. He had a chance to end this game in regulation, but he missed a three at the buzzer. He was the only guy, on either team, to be subbed out in the overtime periods because the coach just wanted somebody else in the game. And he took a terrible, unnecessary shot on the Suns penultimate possession, a shot that effectively sealed the contest in L.A.‘s favor. And his plus/minus is almost impossibly laughable. He’s perilously close to being the only Suns player in the negative, and he was -20. You could make a statistical case that he single handedly lost this game for the Suns. Woof.

A few timely assists in the clutch moments of the game (one to Grant and two to Channing if I’m not mistaken) and a very nice screen to set Channing free in OT on a clutch shot (I think at the end of 2nd OT).

One airball, one that barely hit the backboard, and many bricks. Suns just couldn’t turn those mistakes into a win, just overtimes. If I could blame someone for the game it would be Gentry and Carter....

Carter…Dude, if the shot isn’t falling try to get fouled or something and Gentry…Triple Over Time and Hill fouls out and you BRING CARTER WHO WAS 6-21 IN? DID YOU THINK HE WAS GOING TO MAGICALLY NOT SUCK? That’s not the only reason for blaming Gentry…I thought choosing Dudley to do in the inbound pass was a bad idea, and I thought he could’ve choose a lot better plays to end the game with. I love Gentry since he’s a chemistry builder and shows faith in his guys but from a cerebral stand point….As a play caller he leaves me scratching my head almost every game.

Well if he didn't brought VC back in, then he might've missed whatever VC revelation might have had in OT

So if he doesn’t get him back in and loses, people will wonder why VC wasn’t put in, maybe he would make one or two baskets and that’s it… who knows?

Noone, I repeat, Noone would wonder.

Wait… no, not even the guy rooting for VC his entire life gave up.

Seriously: nobody believes he has it in him anymore. Carter taking 23 shots is almost like Gortat trying to shoot 3’s each game.

If Gentry wants Carter to put up so many shots – he is a bad coach. I don’t think the teammates expected it.

What would you think if, say, all of a sudden, Matt Barnes took 20 shots.
This is who VC is right now. Wait…only he doesn’t play defense….

On the Bright side of things...

We didn’t get slammed on the boards….
Gortat was a man and handled his defensive assignments…
Nash is back to his studley self…
Pietrus is becoming a permanent fixture on the Suns defensive outlook…
Hill is still a BAMF…
Channing Frye is developing into a SICK Power Forward. Against the tandem of Odom and Gasol Frye had 32 POINTS with only 5 threes. That is impressive people. That plus the 14 rebounds has really got me excited for Channing’s development.

by stevedavis_ on Mar 23, 2011 7:23 AM MST reply actions

Everything has positive and negative effects.

Also this trade.
+1 Giving up Hedo who would never fit into the Suns team and had a horrible contract
+1 Getting Gortat, who is turning into a top 10 center, and MP
+1 Getting Vince’s contract, which gives the Sun cap space next season (I assume the Suns won’t keep him lol)
-1 Vince Carter himself
-1 Letting go of J.Rich and the first round pick
-1 Losing time and games while the new players (especially Gortat for the pick and roll with Nash) needed time to adjust. Those losses vs the Clippers, Detroit, Bobcats and twice against 76ers late November and in December would have put the Suns at 40-29 instead of 35-34.

We will probably miss the playoffs this season, but as long we keep Nash (and he declared he would be happy to stay next season) the Suns could have a very good team next season. The Suns just to find a good replacement for Carter but otherwise the team looks good. Nash, Frye, Gortat, Hill, Dudley, MP, Brooks are solid players to build a team around for next season.

Alea iacta est!

by PolishHammer on Mar 23, 2011 7:43 AM MST up reply actions

-1 on Vince’s contract. He costs more than JRich this season and the Suns have to pay him $4m to buy out his final year (or they have to pay him $18m next year).

JRich’s contract was expiring as well. JRich contract > Vince contract

But taking Vince was the price the Suns had to pay to get Gortat and getting rid of Hedo.

If the Suns could have done that deal w/o swapping Carter for JRich they surely would have and they would be a much, much better team right now.

Ok I didn't know about that 4-milion buy-out option.

So if I am correct, the Suns will have 14m to spend on a new player if they buy out Vince? Who do you think would be the best replacement for Vince, Seth?

Alea iacta est!

by PolishHammer on Mar 23, 2011 8:22 AM MST up reply actions

This summer is so different than most b/c of the labor negotiations. No one knows what the rules will be so it’s a very hard market to handicap.

JRich will be a free agent though, but he probably wants a bigger contract than the Suns will want to give him. He makes a ton of sense on a team like the Bulls who already have a star or two. But what the Suns need more than anything is a number one option and if they spend their money on a guy like Jason that will limit their ability to find one.

The biggest mistake they could make is giving franchise—player money to guys who aren’t franchise players. Look at what Detroit did w/ their salary cap. They spent too much on Charlie Villuneuva and Ben Gordon and now they are hosed.

My guess, the Suns will try and find young assets and possibly trade Nash and Lopez to get what they can. I think they have their eyes set on the 2012 when there are more top-notch free agents available.

The players they have to build around – Frye, Gortat, Dudley — are good but not good enough to lead a team. Then they need to decide if they like Brooks enough to give him a multi-year deal and keep him as the starting PG if they do move Nash.

Honestly, I don’t see how next season — however long it is — doesn’t end up very bad for the Suns.

I don't

know why you people think I hate Gortat….I just don’t LOVE him as much as others.

I’ve never talked about the core moving forward. Personally, I would also keep Robin but I don’t think the Suns will. In fact, I am going to write a “Don’t Give Up On Robin Yet” article as soon as I can find the time.

Gortat was always the best part of that trade (said so at the time). Just be careful not to expect him to score like this when Nash is gone.

Consider this:

The Lakers were switching the pick and rolls to contain Nash and prevent the roll man from getting open or drawing help. So what do the Suns do?

They run the pick and roll with Nash and Frye to get Frye iso’d on Fisher and then work in to him.

Why wouldn’t they run the pick and roll with Nash and Gortat at that point and get Gortat the ball in the post against Fisher? Gortat is a better passer and Frye spaces the floor. Where as with Frye having the ball in the post, Gortat is closer to the paint which made it easier to double team Frye.

The reason they didn’t run the 1/5 pick and roll (despite the advantages of having Frye on the perimeter playing off the ball) is b/c they don’t trust Gortat’s post game enough even against a guard.

So again, I like a LOT of what Marcin does and I love who he is as a player and a person. But he’s not creating his own shot which is going to become a big liability once Nash is gone unless they find a really good pick and roll guard to replace him…or if Marcin dramatically improves his post offense.

I agree with you. I also think that he have to inpove his play.

He knows about it. I read many time his interview for Polish papers and he always said what he has to do to be better. But ,to be honest for men who was three year back up for Howard and who had to play only defense, he improve a lot. I shouldn’t expect, that he will be All Star , however everything can happen I wish him the best.

by roby07 on Mar 23, 2011 9:53 AM MST up reply actions

Perhaps you are right

But I have seen make him those hook shoots with both arms without any assists and his jumper is getting better too, as well as his free shots. Currently he is nr. 5 in the NBA in FG%. Even without Nash he still could be a 15/10/2blk player and he has a pretty good passing and BB IQ. But as you said, it all depends on the PG, Gortat needs at least 60-70% of his points from a good PNR.

But for the first I think the Suns shouldn’t trade Lopez. Now that I have seen so many games of the Suns, I was wrong to criticize your article about the potential of Lopez. He really is a good, athletic player but his problem seems to be more of a mental issue. It’s like he is not 100% focused all the time. The problem with those kind of mental problems, that you can’t predict the outcome. Lopez might recover and become the great player he was or fade away. But it would be stupid to trade him. What center could we get in return?

no reason not to be proud of him…

Look, Kendrick Perkins is a disaster on offense. Ben Wallace can’t hit an uncontested layup.

Very few players are great on both ends of the floor…they are called super stars. Gortat is not a super star. He’s a very nice player. There’s nothing wrong with that.

I still think that he can be much better.

That ceiling Seth is talking about IMO is higher for Gortat than for Lopez.

He has great instincts, knows his limitations, has great b-ball IQ and IS STILL IMPROVING. month to month basis even.
I will stop talking all-star when I see him after this offseason without a better-than-average post game.

If gets his post moves right (say, to D-12’s level) he will be a monster. He is very mobile, he has a very decent mid-range shot for a C, rebounds quite well on offense… all he is missing is some post game and that is not even 100% true. he has a great spin-to-up-and-under move, a fade away and some nice hook shots with both hands.

he actually has trouble with POSTING UP not finishing, and I believe this can be addressed in 3-4 months of training.

I stand by my words – he can be an 18-12-2 player. THAT is his ceiling.

Don't forget the extra -.5

For that 4 mil. buyout on VC will count against the 2011-’12 cap space. Yes even when Vince is gone, his name will still be holding the Suns back.

Orlando threw in 3mil cash to cover most of the difference on Jrich contract vs VC contract. I think it ends up being 1 mil and some change. About the amount of a raise that Amundson was seeking :(

It’s pretty amazing that VC was able to get that last contract from NJ.

I really thought Carter would at least be a decent option, Boy I was wrong. It will be good to see him go. Lopez really has been a huge disappointment. Why in the world does this front office make a deal for Brooks ( giving up a 1 and Dragic) then end up playing Brooks in a Triple OT game 13 minutes? No sense.
I just hope the Suns use there Number 1 to get some youth, and length. Hope that Lawal will turn into a decent option off the bench and Hill and Nash still can produce at this level next year. Sadly I see a lock out in the NBA which will be uglier than the NFL.

Frye had career high 32 p. It is not easy to score so many points.
Everybody played at their maximum. All people even the guards MUST shoot closer to the basket for better percentages. Dont forget defence. In order to win you must score first 2-0 and then good defence 2-0 again and then good offence 4-0 etc. Its that simple.

While I like the Suns more than the Lakers, I happen to like both teams (not like how I hate the Heat or Celtics), and while I think the Suns certainly needed the win far more than the Lakers, I’m also glad I got to see the Suns take the defending champions to the limit in what was a very good game (minus anything Vince Carter was involved with). Even though there’s no such thing as a moral victory, this would pretty much be as close as it gets.

I'd absolutely want him here.

However when he did have his own team (Memphis) he couldn’t even help them win a playoff game. I think he’s a really good 2nd guy.

Memphis sucked

He took Memphis to the playoffs. You know thats about as far as anyone could have taken them. Gasol always had good numbers, they were never eye popping was always consistant. Gasol was a high prospect, what if he was still in Memphis now, with Rudy Gay would they up there…I think so.

He’s a good 2nd guys to Kobe Bryant, thats proven. But I think Pau Gasol was a franchise player not as great as a Lebron James, but fundamentally as good as Duncan, with talent somewhere between Kevin Mchale and Dirk.

Thats basically what it is. I’m not hating on Kobe, but atleast the Celtics embraced how they were doing it and what they were doing. Each guy knew they weren’t the “guy” no more. After saying all that…This Laker team is the most talented team Phil Jackson has ever coached, its just a joke. So, I disagree. You make good points, I didn’t take it personally, its certainly debatable because of his championship rings. Kobe is a winner no doubt.

by jay16 on Mar 23, 2011 10:14 AM MST up reply actions

Please dont compare Kobe to Michael

I disagree….He is not one of the top 5.

1. How many MVP’s has Kobe won
2. How many scoring titles
3. How many rings without having the most talented teams in the league. The Bulls were never the most “talented”. They had some of the oldest players. Rodman was considered washed up, Steve Kerr, Ron Harper, washed up

It maybe just me, I'm bitter.

I sat there and watched the game last night more in awe of how Nash played then Kobe. Then I started thinking about Kobe’s rings, MVP’s and the unbelievable talent he has to have in order to squeak by the Suns last night. Gasol is the real MVP of these laker teams with Bryant. He causes a matchup problem with everyone except Dirk or Duncan. He is the “white version” of the big fundamental, only the Lakers got him in his prime in a low ball deal.

Its probably me bro. Suns play with heart, they got some guys with balls on this team. Not Carter

by jay16 on Mar 23, 2011 10:07 AM MST up reply actions

You don't get to be in the sentence "the best of an era"

without a ring. so forget Nash, Iverson and some other superstars.

I wouldn’t consider Nash to be better then Charles Barkley, and you simply can’t argue Barkley was the best player of the 90’s.

Robinson and Duncan were much like Stockalone – a duo. Shaq and Kobe were pretty much the same.

Kobe is the best of his era because he has multiple rings with two very different teams, has a number of clutch perrformances in key games and has the intensity of play LeBron’s, Wade’s and Melo’s can only dream of.

He is giving his 100% always ( a little like young Iverson did ).
Combined with all the rings and his skill – I don’t see anyone taking it away from him.
And I don’t even like the guy.

In short – character wise – he is the only superstar of this era that wants is as bad as MJ did and shows it on the court. Period. Bam. For me, that’s enough.
Period. T

I disagree again. Steve Nash was never the reason the Suns never got a ring and he revolutionized the game. Why couldn’t I say Nash was the best in his era? He won two MVP’s and changed the game. No one will remember how many times the Jason Kidd Nets lost in the finals but they will remember the Nash led Suns.

How is Kobe close to Michael Jordan? Why don’t you pull up some stats and show me what your talking about. So far its all opinion based.

I don't think Barkley was the greatest in the 90's. Maybe at his position.

-We blew a late lead against San Antonio
-Rudy Gay drilled a contested corner three pointer to send us to overtime
-J-Rich missed a FT against Chicago that would have extended our lead to 3 instead of 2 in OT
- We couldn’t finish a 4th quarter against Portland….3 times
- We lost to the Clippers
- We lost to the Kings on Sacto by blowing a huge lead….and then lost again at home a few weeks later
-We blew an enormous lead against Detroit in Detroit
-We couldn’t finish at home against OKC (or on the road in overtime)

Glad you missed possibly Nash's last "classic" game as a Sun?

Or probably the best regular season game this year?

Achievement is its own reward, pride obscures it.

I hear you

I was at a home game a few years back when the Suns and Wizards had an epic battle. Gilbert Arenas dropped like 50 points and Nash was insanely good as well. Suns lost, but still one of the best games I’ve ever seen live.

Sometimes, you have to take off the homer hat and just appreciate a great game.

that 06/07 team defined BAMF

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

the funny thing is that dallas was a better regular season team than us somehow

they had three 10 game winstreaks before the all star break…ridiculous

And we beat them in a double 0T thriller and than Crushed them while making history by shooting about 70% against them.

When Amar’e returned to form that 07 team became really good. Had Boris Diaw managed to play as well as was capable of the Suns would have beaten the Spurs and won the title.

you can’t blame the entire loss of the series on Boris

Hell, Amare played terribly down the stretch in Game 6

It was sad times. Sad, sad times.

I remember it was either Nash or Raja who was just sitting on the floor at the end when the buzzer sounded, and they were just looking at each other like “:(”. LB was crying.

I also remember D’Antoni looked like he was going to cry in 08. Boris and LB were crying IIRC.

I don't remember that.

I just remember Nash hugging Duncan, congratulating him for the win.

I don’t remember Amar’e playing terrible down the stretch. I just remember we were down by 20 in the 3rd and the Suns made an amazing comeback that got it within 5. Amar’e had 36 that game I believe.

I also remember that beautiful wrap around behind the back pass between two Spurs players to Amar’e for a dunk over Oberto from Nash. Best play I’ve ever seen till this day.

no, but he was inconsistent by choice.

I think he was one of those players just in it for the money.

Horry and the refs(yes I believe Donaghy when he said the head ref over the series wanted the Spurs in the WCF’s) played a major par tin the Suns losing. That was our year though. I just wish Boris had cared more because we might have been able to play through that.

I don't think Boris didn't care

I just think he didn’t know how to play unless the ball was going through him. 05/06, amazing. 06/07, and 07/08 he’s like “ummmm”. Then 08 playoffs D’Antoni goes through Boris and it’s like Boris was resurrected. Almost recorded back to back triple doubles against Duncan and he shut down Tony Parker.

Dude doesn’t seem passionate about the game, but I don’t think his inconsistency was a choice so much as it was just a matter of circumstance and his reduced role.

Sigh…I think that could have been our year.

Very tough loss for me. It was the last game before Christmas, so it was tough. It was sad to see the 15 game winning streak end. I remember saying to myself, “The team probably feels the same way, I bet they’ll come out strong their next game and start another 10+ winning.” They did.

So can we agree that Grant Hill is DPOY?

Kobe smelling blood after he fouls out pretty much tells you how much respect Grant Hill commands. Ugh… if he didn’t foul out, we would’ve stood more of a chance. But this team’s best players are 37 and 38. This is just… amazing.

But didn’t Brent Barry go and say we’re one of the few teams that “know how to beat the Lakers” or something like that?

Unbelievable game!

It’s just really unfortunate that all that grit and effort went for naught at a time when every game is so crucial. I agree with all those who question Gentry’s constant reliance on VC. It makes no sense. Ugh, this hurts – but I must grudgingly tip my hat to the Fuggin Fakers. They played really hard even though the game was nowhere near as important to them. In my view this is strictly because Kobe remembers the history between the teams and respects us in spite of our dismal current record. He will not tolerate anything but maximum effort from his team. [I know. I will burn in hell for these comments in this forum. I cannot tell a lie.]

This game shows what we’re still capable of in spite of significant problems with our roster. Too bad it’s too little too late. It’s hail Mary time – and unfortunately I don’t think she cares about the Suns.
