The best player on the team is Steve Nash – who is currently 36 years old and will turn 37 just before the All-Star break next season.

Hate to break it to you, but Nash is already 37 and will be turning 38 next season.

Good work dude. Nice break down on just how distinctly average the players on this team are outside of Nash and Hill.

I think you summed it up best the other night when you tweeted something along the lines of ‘Jared Dudley is good, I just wish this team was good enough to have him as a 7th man’.

I have to disagree with the Gortat comment though. Without a quality point guard, dude is not gonna get you 14 and 10. The 10 boards are the most likely part of that line but the 14 points simply won’t materialise because his post game is almost non-existant and the majority of his points at the moment feel like they come from pick and rolls with Steve,

I could check out hoopdata.com to confirm my thoughts but I can’t be bothered. I’m almost certain that he scores 80% of his points from lay-ups off the pick and roll.

I guess he could develop a post game during the inevitable lockout, in which case I’m all for him being signed up for longer.

But if Steve leaves and he hasn’t improved his post game, I really don’t see him being very beneficial to us.

Still, he IS an improvement on the current Robin Lopez version we have – version 2.blows.

Man, this Suns team is terrible.

It almost seems like every player has one skill that they’re pretty good at but that the rest of their game needs rounding out. If a mad scientist took the time to combine all the best bits of the entire Suns roster (minus Hill and Nash), they could probably create two really good players. That might be preferable.

yea, I agree.

I don’t see Gortat averaging 14ppg without Nash. Both him and Frye need to work on their post game.

Yes, I’ve said it before; we’d be the worst team in the NBA without Nash. Don’t let that Clipper game fool you because they’ve got great, young talent and will only get better.

This is one of my favorite cliches. Young and talented does not always equate to getting better. I think we said that about Goran Dragic this past summer.

You judge Gortat after 4 months of play.

You know better that he can play only 14/10 or 12/10. Quick judgement. Like every frustrated fan after bad season. All knows that team win and lose. If we have Nash ,what is wrong when Gortat ,Frye or everybody from team score. In one thing I agree. What is happen when Nash retire or go out. But I think, this is a problem for every team who have All Star player. IMO similar situation will be when K.Bryant wil finish career or other All Star in other teams. I also think is better to expect more from men who has 14/10 courently like from young men like Lopez who has disappeared during this season.
I’d say the same things about all players who have improved his game a lot. Not only Gortat. Basicly, Suns don’t have many perspective players. They delayed rebuild or had wrong choise during last draft. Maybe both.

by roby07 on Apr 5, 2011 12:00 PM MST up reply actions

Jesus, the more I think about it, the more angry I get about this roster.

It’d be so easy to name each player and not only rip into them but name the deficiencies I see them having. It actually angers me how bad some of the players are and how we’re forced into putting up with them. F*cking pile of sh*t.

And with every bad and negative word I type, I think of Hakim Warrick. The poster boy of the Suns season – Thought to be competent, able to compete against most opposition but ultimately limited in talent and pretty pathetic.

I’m definitely on the bad side of my bi-polar today.

+1 on Warrick

He is a perfect example of how much worse things look now than they did in, say August.

The mantra of the people who were positive (me) about the moves made over the summer was “well, they have acquired some multi-talented players on average contracts (i.e. they’re tradeable), which makes the front office flexible, and the players they acquired/resigned might turn out to be really good anyways.”

Except, what happens if the players they acquired/resigned suck and end up being overpaid? Then they are Hakim Warrick, and the joke is on us.

I smell like the vault. I'm so PAID.

by RMason on Apr 4, 2011 5:28 PM MST up reply actions

I'm kicking myself in hindsight over the Warrick signing.

Because I totally talked myself into it and should have known better. The first thing I did when I read here that we were gonna sign him was go to his nba.com stats page. It was there that I saw: 3.0 PPG and 1.7 RPG. That was jarring. I was going off the “he’s a 9 or 10 PPG guy as a backup, imagine what he’ll do with Nash!” premise. The numbers I saw, though, were his playoff numbers with the Bulls last year. He had barely kept himself in the Bulls playoff rotation and made a grand total of 2 FGs in their playoff series. Should’ve been bright, flashing red lights there, but I chose to ignore them and drink the Kool-Aid instead. My bad.

by East Bay Ray on Apr 4, 2011 5:46 PM MST up reply actions

If Nash doesn't ask out than it's likely the FO will continue their "Retend or Conbuild" approach.

Nash, Hill, Gortat, Dudley, Chill and Frye will likely be here next season while Pietrus, Warrick, Lopez and Brooks will likely be gone next season. The only way to improve this team would be through trade or free agency as you said. Of course it’s difficult to predict what they will do because we don’t know how much money Sarver will be willing to spend due to the upcoming CBA and possible lock-out.

Anyway, we know what this team needs; a starting PF, so Frye can come off the bench, a better SG and a decent backup PG to Nash. It would really help if one of those guys is a star, but it’s unlikely that will happen. So, lets check out this year’s free agency list.

Who would the Suns be interested in? I have a list of unrestricted free agents with no options attached.

AK-47 (PF)
Dalembert ©
Bibby (PG)
Barea (PG)
Crawford (SG)
Krstic ©
Davis (PF/C)
Prince (SF)
Hayes ©
Humphries (PF)
Landry (PF)
J-Rich (SG)

Barea, Humphries and Crawford/J-Rich are the guys I’m most interested in and although each one will fulfill a roster need, neither is a star and we will likely be unable to sign all 3 of them anyway. Humphries would be my first choice and target if I was in the FO, but he’ll likely be the most expensive. Still if were going to conbuild than we might as well sign someone good and not another Warrick.

Other than the 3 stars Scott mentioned, the 2012 free agency class isn’t much different. With or without Nash were kind of doomed for at least the next 3-(lets just say a long time) years.

Don't trade Dudley!

Teams still have interest in Peaches, but nobody really cares for Warrick, so we might be stuck with him as our backup PF, but I’m ok with that as long as they sign Humphries or trade for Milsap.

There’s a reason the Suns are 1-7 when Jared Dudley scores 20 points; it’s because if you have Jared Dudley scoring 20 points your basketball team isn’t very good.

ok here's a dose of needed optimism

before Seth has to turn the background color to red with darker slashes.

The front office obviously needs to fine new all-star talent. That can be had via a very good draft or a very good trade. Once that all-star talent is back on the team, a plethora of good, supporting role players awaits. With an all-star (maybe 2?), the Suns can turn this back around.

true enough

I remember after the shaq year when we missed the playoffs, I had no certainty that we would make the playoffs the following year, and certainly no sense of what was coming. And the sale of Shaq while positive wasn’t an obvious slam dunk at the time it happened.

My other thought is that just 2 weeks ago, we looked like a serious contender as we almost took the lakers down with a miraculous comeback. Since we were eliminated in the NOH game, we have looked like Shitte. so which team is it, the team that nearly took down the lakers or this lackadaisical group?

Still say that if we could find two competent players at the 2 and the 4, say Landry/Dalembert/humphries/ak47 and Jrich/Crawford, we would be a pretty good team again.

I hope you mean serious contenders to make the playoffs? Otherwise you’re gonna have to pull it back just a bit.

Re-sign BAMF.

by brian13 on Apr 5, 2011 10:48 AM MST up reply actions

well 3 or 4 weeks ago people were talking about us being 5th or 6th...

What’s happened since then? Frye got injured and Nash stayed injured and we played like shit during that time, proving what? we aren’t deep enough I suppose. And then once eliminated we have played with zero intensity, causing many to potentuially underestimate the quality of the guys that we do have here.

All I know, is that our “suckdom” is not as guaranteed as many would have it. In fact, its not that I know that we are not a good team, its that no one should be that confident that we aren’t. I just don’t think there was enough time when the team was settled and healthy to really fully evaluate where we are at, and I wonder if we had even a passable replacement for Frye, where we would be.

by HarvMel on Apr 5, 2011 3:44 PM MST up reply actions

I tend to agree

But to me there are only about 6 “serious contenders.” We were never close to being one of them.

Really great post.

However, I disagree on one thing: Hakim Warrick. I know he’s not a “great” power forward but in 28.5 minutes a game, he averages 11 points and 6 or 7 rebounds. In 17 minutes, its still eight points and 4 rebounds. It’s not great, by any means, but it’s solid. He’s shown us what he can do in games a few times, and I’ve always liked his hustle.
We also gave him quite a few more minutes in the beginning of the season, when he was producing better. Then, in the middle of the season, when his minutes decreased, he began producing less and personally I think that was just a confidence issue. Now his minutes have increased and we haven’t seen the old Hakim quite yet, except against the Clippers, but I don’t think it’s a crime to leave him around for at least the beginning of next season and see how much his game improves in the offseason. He needs to see that he can’t dunk over everyone but his jump shots shown considerable improvement since the beginning of the season. I wouldn’t mind seeing him back next season, at least to see how he plays after this summer.

by bmiller16 on Apr 4, 2011 11:38 PM MST reply actions

I don't really see Hakim as going anywhere

I suppose my point was more that he just kind of is what he is. He’s going to have 1 awesome game in every 10 but he tends to drift. Dude’s just inconsistent. That’s why he makes just over $4 million a year and not 14.

by Scott Howard on Apr 5, 2011 12:07 AM MST up reply actions

Yeah, I agree completely.

Although, I think he needs floor time to gain confidence, and maybe he’d play better then. But I do agree, although I could see him playing kind of a Lou type role, as far as hustling, although Hakim seems to hustle more on the offensive end then the defensive end. If something better were to come along I’d say jump on it but for right now he seems to be a decent piece to keep on the bench.

by bmiller16 on Apr 5, 2011 8:53 PM MST up reply actions

There is a reason why Warrick

has been on 4 teams in 6 years. The guy is just OK, nothing special. One night you think you have something the next night your wondering why he is in the rotation.

by Grockcubs on Apr 5, 2011 5:38 AM MST up reply actions

I agree with this, too.

But that’s true of a lot of players. I’m not saying “DON’T TRADE WARRICK” I’m just saying he’s got the potential to be a decent piece.
That sounds really defensive and angry. I’m not trying to be defensive and angry, I’m just bad at phrasing things! Sorry!

A few nights ago

I had a dream that I was a bench player for the Suns (once again) and we were losing a game. Thunder Dan was talking to us during the timeout and said “don’t worry guys…I’ll see you on the court when 4th quarter starts”. Dudley was like “you’re kidding me!” and he said no and ended up really playing with us in the 4th. It was so awkward haha what was more awkward was Carmelo Anthony was in our team, yet we were still losing.

Good article

I agree with your findings. All those years of dumping draft picks have added up. I understand you can’t keep every 1st round pick you have when you are dealing with cap issues and in the mode of winning now. But you have to add youth through out your runs. Sure this team has had some good runs, 3 WCF appearances in the last 7 years, but now the cupboard is getting bare.
Out of all the free agents I would try to add Humphries. He can board and plus his lady friend would make good camera shots during the games.

Why is everyone regurgitating the ridiculous opinion that Gortat is only "solid"

Why does everyone think he’s all Nash? He can score with any borderline competent PG. He played well whenever he got some sort of minutes in Orlando and he played with a shoot-first PG in Nelson who downright refused to pass him the ball even if he had a wide open path to the basket.

His pick and roll game isn’t amazing because of Nash, he was already really good at that in ORL, he just was underutilized. Same goes for the jumper, he hit it on a pretty consistent basis. He averaged 9 pts 9 rebs 1.5 blks every single time he played at least 20+ minutes for the Magic. Kendrick Perkins averaged about the same for the Celtics in 09. So are you going to keep making up weirder and weirder ways to call him solid (Solid Snake?) or will you admit that he is actually, you know, one step from that breakout All-Star season that will end with him filling the role of that weird looking big white guy in the All-Star game?

Most teams would pay through their nose for him, why do you think Mavs offered him that contract in 09 despite him being considered a career bench guy? And why do you think Magic went and matched that offer? He’s got the best offensive game of any defensive center in the freaking league (except Pumaman obviously) that is unless you guys consider that one post move Bynum does offense.

I dread that Sarver will just dive into rebuild mode and trade Gortat to the Mavs, Heat or even someone Spurs or (gasp!) Lakers for scrubs. And 11-12 wll be marked by Nash spending his last days on the court tanking with scrubs and D-Leaguers watching his bro Dirk (or Gasol, or Timmy D, or the Super Friends) straight up murder teams with Gortat as the oft-forgotten sidekick.

by rzyn on Apr 5, 2011 5:50 AM MST reply actions   1 recs

This

Also, Gortat has shown one feature that he’s certainly in the top of the league at: smart work ethic. Meaning he’s willing to work on this game and he knows how to do it. Compare his free throw percentage and his jumper from ORL and PHX – see a difference? And he did it in what, two months transition time? Seeing as he has NEVER been an offensive threat in ORL (he was literally the LAST OPTION on the team, all backups included) and that he’s never worked on his post game as a result, why the assumption that he can’t develop a post game in the offseason? He’s athletic, he’s got really good ballhandling skills for a center and as a bonus, he passes great out of double teams. Yes, he’s not Amare or Dwight, he won’t put up 25ppg, but if he put up 18 with 2apg, wouldn’t that still make him an all-star center?

by ilintar on Apr 5, 2011 2:33 PM MST up reply actions

on the other hand

the only player under contact past next season whose contract is bad is warrick in my opinion.

I’d resign dudley, frye, gortat, and childress to their same contracts if it was a choice between that and letting them go.

Everyone is over reacting.

I think that the Suns are going to be contenders next year because they will pull off a Robin for J-Smith trade, and throw in VC to “sweeten” the deal. Then, Nash and Hill will find the fountain of youth with Captain Jack Sparrow this summer, making their body’s about 12 years younger proclaiming themselves to be the BAMF twins. Then, Gortat will develop his post game practicing against Siler who will subsequently come back next year 25 pounds lighter from all of the work he put in against the Hammer. He will average 10/8 as Gortat’s backup, and every player star with an expiring deal will see that Phoenix is the place to be with this amazing tandem at center. Not to mention that we will have enjoyed a summer with an average temperature in the low 80s this year, making this a destination that nobody would refuse. With all of the excitement in the air, people begin attending more games and Sarver becomes delighted with the turn of events, so much so that he opens his wallet. This indirectly impacts the Phoenix housing market which has a huge upswing, and everyone that owns homes makes their money back. Everyone will become so happy and free spirited that the mayor of Phoenix will proclaim every Friday to be “topless day” and we get to enjoy free boobies every Friday. Dragic comes back to Phoenix to visit and realizes what he truly left behind was his one true love, DIM… And we have a BSOTS wedding, the first of its kind.

This will happen, just be a little optimistic folks. Sorry if I just wasted a minute of your day, but I think everyone should begin using tactics from “The Secret”, because if we all think like Scott, then we will be fans of the next Timberwolves. Let’s not let that happen! OPTIMISM!!!!

and the Lakers/Heat/Celtics will all bow out of the playoffs in the first round. DWade realizes he hates sharing the limelight with Lebron and wants to team up with the BAMF twins and their DPOY awards because he knows that is his best chance at winning a second ring.

I'm not that pessimist, I'm trying to be realistic

And I think that Sarver would give us another chance to see this core of players ( Nash, Hill, Dudley and Frye) another shot.
He may sign two or three players, surely one SG and one PF. I don’t see that we’re going to sign a star, or get a star from the draft, but yes we’re going to improve next year, just because all the players will work to get better and become more important players. It’s their job, don’t underestimate them.
So think…if we can get those two players, would you think that we can be a top five seed next year?
I think that yes, we can. See the team and believe

Nash/ Brooks
J-Rich/ Dudz
Hill/ Childress
Millsap/ Warrick
Gortat/ Frye/ Siler

that’s a very good team
