Phoenix Suns Player Evaluation 2010-11: Aaron Brooks, a Fictional Interview
Welcome to the Tenth masterpiece of the 2010-11 Phoenix Suns Player Evaluations. We here at Bright Side of the Sun have assembled somewhat of an All-Star cast of writers to put together alternative views on the players, front office, and coaches... but we're getting tired of dragging out crappy players and boring ya'll with repetitive commentary. Your favorite and least favorite Suns will no doubt get plenty of attention blablabla and if you're still reading this you are probably the only person in the world who has read this entire paragraph.
SPOILER ALERT/DISCLAIMER! The Following is not a real interview with Aaron Brooks conducted by Eutychus. It's kind of like a Unicorn - It's made up of real parts but the concept in it's entirety is a fairy tale... and it can fly and walk on rainbows... and shoot laser beams from it's eyes.
So I recently had the chance to sit down and talk with Aaron Brooks. Here's how it went down.
Eutychus: Hey AB! How's your off-season Goin'?
Aaron Brooks: It's aight. (Nod's his head and looks down)
E: Nice, so you think you could introduce yourself to the bajillions of Suns fans over at Bright Side of the Sun - and be completely honest and open because I'm an Eagle Scout and that's a virtue I live by and command from others. Consider this more like therapy than an informal interview.
AB: Um.. ok? Hi. My name is Aaron Jamal Brooks. I was born in Seattle WA, I like long walks on the beach, video games, bowling, I'm married and I have a daughter named MiKah. Let's see... what's playing in my ipod right now... --
[Interrupted]
E: Alright Alright Alright, hold on. BORING. Let's get one thing straight AB, real talk - you'll never be as likable as Goran Dragic so stop trying, just ask Seth.
AB: Borat who?
E: [Shakes head, deliberate face-palm] Nevermind.. just tell the peeps at home listening how you became a member of the Phoenix Suns.
AB: Uh, Ok? I was traded to the Suns because supposedly my lighting quick speed and video game-like shooting range is a perfect fit for the Suns, or you could go with Rick Adelman hated me and I was sour about losing my starting gig to some chunky dude named Kyle, so they off-ed me. BUT I had an injury at the beginning of last season that really just had me in a funk all year long and then the refs hated me becau-
[Interrupted - again]
E: [Grinning] Whoa! whoa! Slow down there cowboy, I mean - I've got the waaambulance on speed dial if you want me to call in some back-up here for this pity party?
See what happens next, at your own risk, after you jump it fools!
AB: [He laughs and points in my direction] Good one Euty, I know what it sounds like - it sounds like a lot of excuses, especially since I played like absolute garbage this year...
E: Yeah but you know SBNation gave you an award right?
AB: Really? I don't read crappy blogs like yours so I wouldn't know.
E: Yeah, you won the prestigious Worst Contract Year Performance Award of 2010-11! Congrats bro! Yeah you had some stiff competition from dudes who played a ton last year like Troy Murphy and Greg Oden.
AB: ...
E: I tease, I tease. But seriously dude, I'm not gonna lie - I had big hopes for you when came to Phoenix, but from our perspective here at the Bright Side, it really just looked like you weren't trying very hard. Do you have a problem coming off the bench? Is it an Ego issue you're dealing with? Talk to me.
AB: I have no problem coming off the bench behind a 2-time MVP - now Kyle Lowry? Yeah. But look, you think I would play like trash on purpose, in a contract year no less? What you might call excuses, to me have a real emotional effect on how I play and how much confidence I have in my own game. You know what they say right? Basketball is 10% physical and 90% mental...
E: No that's Golf Brooks. They say that about golf.
AB: Whatever ... look, all I'm saying is look at my stats for the first two years of my career versus what happened last year and keep in mind these two or three or four things.
- I had the worst injury of my career at the start of the season.
- I had some chemistry issues with some of the people I was working with
- I lost the starting job that I felt I had earned and deserved to keep even after an injury
- I was traded for the first time in my career - mid-season no less - and plunked into a system built around pass first point guards like Steve Nash and Borat Tragic and told to be the 'score-first' point guard that I am... how does that make sense?
E: Eh, alright lets take a look.
E: Yeah man... that's pretty terrible. 0.375 from the field? Yeesh.
AB: Okay - but look at my previous years, I've never shot below 40%
E: And 0.297 from 3pt range!? What the...
AB: Yeah Yeah but again - look, the last two years I've been closer to 40%. My injury plus the wacky playing time and role, it just kind of threw everything in kind of a funk. I'm better than this.
E: Well I've heard from a lot fans that they think you were a one-hit wonder. I mean you won the MIP award in 09-10 and absolutely lit it up from downtown and ripped up defenses like we're watching JJ Barea do in the playoffs this year... But now they think you're going to fall off the map because you're bitter and sour about your relationships with the Rockets and with some NBA officials - you did throw the ball at one and cup your nuts at another.
AB: Look, you and your blog-buddies don't have to take believe anything I say, especially since this whole conversation is a figment of your imagination, but I'm better than what you saw. Give me chance - with a training camp under my belt, some more knowledge of the amazing Suns offense, a fresh season start with no injury and I guarantee I won't disappoint next year. I've already proven I can do what you and the Suns want me to do, why would it be so hard to do what I know I can and have done before?
E: [Shakes head] Ah AB. Well I hope you're right. And since you're now an RFA I'm guessing you'll sign the Suns qualifying offer for sure and stay with the team right?
AB: That's what I want to do - I mean Steve will be back... but he's an old fart and he'll be gone soon, what better opportunity than here with the Suns could I possibly find where I can inherit my own team and be the guy!? Wait, can you delete that part? I don't want people to think that I'm selfish or anything.
E: Uh, yeah - I'll cross that part out.
AB: So are we done yet?
E: Pretty much, you gave me all the excuses I thought you would. And then you told me you would try hard and that you don't have a problem playing off the bench - just like I thought you would... oh yeah, one more question. If you had to give yourself a letter grade for your performance this year what would it be?
AB: Psh. If you're a nice teacher you would give me an 'I' for incomplete because of all the mitigating factors... but if you were anything like my social studies teacher back in high school you'd probably give me an 'F' because I sucked balls and made a lot of excuses. So take your pick.
E: I like that answer.
AB: You would like that answer.
E: Thanks for your time AB - oh and pray that the Suns don't draft that Jimmer Fredette. Because if they do that will most definitely be the sound of the Suns giving up on you like they gave up on Dragic because you know Nash will be here for another 2 to 3 years.
AB: You trippin'.
E: Well you're not even real. Burn.

I had a hard time writing about Aaron Brooks...
The more I think about him the more I don’t like him and I can’t figure out why.
Oh and for those of you voting for the “Awful. I’d rather have Mark Jackson doing the talking.” option… You are terrible human beings.
:)

Brooks is a tough one
but remember we all wanted to get rid of JRich based on his first half-season here too.

I feel the same way about AB.
I don’t like him much, and I’m not sure why. Maybe cause he’s a poor man’s Jamal Crawford, whom I’ve never been a fan of, except he’s way too tiny to be a combo guard, which is what his skillset lends itself towards.
He had some nice games, but my overall feeling on him is “meh”.

As Nash fans, the thought of a shoot-first PG rubs many of us the wrong way.
Especially when Brooks played like crapola all season. It’s one thing if a guy’s like Derrick Rose or Russell Westbrook, but Brooks played like a homeless man’s version of those guys.

He’s gonna explode next season. That is the reason we should keep him!

by sunsfanfromchitown on May 10, 2011 11:12 AM MST via mobile reply actions
So I assume you're talking about exploding in a good way (by playing well and scoring lots)
Because a case can be made that he might explode in a bad way (kinda like he did last season.. or would that be implode?)
Or you could mean explode in the literal sense.. and if that’s the case, then we definitely shouldn’t resign him, unless you want to see a human being explode. If that’s the case then you’re just sick.
Re-sign BAMF.
that would be an amazing highlight and a game impossible to forget.
an actuall human being exploding. I’ve heard about spontaneous combustion, but if were to happen, oh man. lets keep AB, that just sold it for me.

I just saw a double rainbow...
What does that mean? Its beautiful!
I think the Suns need to give him a chance… He didn’t come in mid-season like the other guys, he came in at the deadline, which is about 70% (give or take a percentage) of the way through the year. There’s just not enough sample size for me to make a good evaluation (not that I am capable of making said “good” evaluation)… He showed flashes of what he was brought here to do, and with a little bit of added chemistry and comfort in the system, I think he could be much more effective than what he showed in the 25 or so games he played for the Suns this year. We aren’t talking about VC here, the guy will play hard, he’s little, so he has to play hard in order to be effective.
I feel you on this big time
I was pretty excited to give him a chance when the trade happened, it’s just weird how I feel more negativity towards him now than I did before and he really did have a small sample size.
I mean – I should like the guy too at least character-wise because he was one of the few players who stood up for Zabian Dowdell when he was disrespected.
I just can’t figure it out.

The most important thing is that despite that, he at least lived up to his “Laker Killer” reputation.

I’m willing to give Brooks a mulligan for this season. He was less ineffective than Dragic was for us last year, so I give a little credit there, but he still can and needs to do better. I’m sorry for those of you who hate the guy because I’m pretty sure we’re stuck with him based on Babby’s comment about how you have to be patient on trades. Well...
I don’t think he’s a bad person or teammate, I just think he doesn’t care…Oops, wrong guy :-)
But seriously, I think you summed up Brooks’s situation pretty well. He had a tumultuous season that affected him both mentally and physically. He was coming off a fantastic season and suddenly got injured, lost his starting job, fell out of favor with his team, and then got traded. That had to do a number on his psyche…and I just don’t think he was prepared to deal with all of that adversity all at once.
Knowing all of this, I believe our FO would be willing to give him a mulligan under normal circumstances, but that’s complicated as well. He’s a free agent and will certainly receive other offers from teams willing to give him another shot. Will they offer him a contract based on his play in 09/10, or 10/11? It’s possible that we aren’t interested at signing him to a new deal regardless after his very underwhelming three month stint here, but I believe we will take a chance on re-signing him if we can do so at a good price.

Brooks was and is a good pickup for us
In fact, he’s our leading scorer per minutes played — 240 points in 473 minutes is pretty good production. He also had 104 assists.
Let’s break it down. Assuming 104 assists means 208 points (a little low because some of those were assists to three-pointers), that means he had a hand in at least 448 points in his 473 minutes.
Not Nashy numbers, but pretty decent by the standards of human point guards.
Per 36 minutes, Brooks would fall somewhere around No. 10-15 in the league. Not a world beater but better than average.
The .375 field and .297 from three shooting percentage is kind of anemic, but that is for the whole year, and I don’t care how many sucky games he had for the Rockets. In purple and orange, he shot .430 and .328.
Still not great, but I suspect his percentage could have been better if defenses had had to worry about another scoring threat out there with him.
Finally, let’s remember he’s a point guard coming in past mid-season. That’s a lot harder than moving in as a forward or two guard because the position depends so much on knowing the system and the guys you’re playing with.
Setting aside the Carter/Pietrus/Childress and/or Dowdell for Chris Paul fantasies, I seriously doubt we’ll find a better point guard to take Brooks’ place in the near term.
New York, the other Planet Orange.
oh yeah, you're right
I want him back
"Steve Nash is more valuable for the Suns than Kobe for the Lakers" - Jared Dudley
Brooks
doesn’t play to set up his team mates … he plays to score. His assists usually come after he’s driven himself into trouble and he is forced to pass the ball, not because he ran any kind of play. He’s going to get a decent number of assists simply because he starts with the ball and any score immediately afterward has a good chance of being “an assist”. I never saw a single player do better when Brooks was on the floor. All of that makes him a really quick, short 2 guard who doesn’t defend … it doesn’t make him a point guard.

whether the interview was good or not i usually would of just said u were awesome but I thought were kind of a dick in that fantasy interview. seriously if your gonna rag on brooks like that then u gotta be 10x as harsh in the robin lopez evaluation or possibly fantasy review. so yeah I voted awful. I might be biased though cuz I wanna see brooks in a suns uniform next season, didn’t he average like 4 assists in about 19 min per game. He played better than dragic and I bet he’ll do better next season. anyways i’m not really concerned about addressing the pg spot we just need interior d, nash, brooks, dowdell is likely a better option at that position than any other team has.
The Robin Lopez interview will be held at a McDonald's play area...

Aaron Brooks averaged 9 and 4 which were my expectations for Dragic going into this season.
His performance wasn’t that bad considering the circumstances. This team has a really bad chemistry and I believe that’s made players like Brooks, Pietrus and possibly Lopez look worse than they are. Warrick just sucks, VC is a mercenary and Chill being an expensive and highly overpaid SF can’t even hit a mid-range jumper. Bring in a PF, put Frye on the bench and Brooks and Pietrus should thrive.
Don't trade Dudley!
I think too many people
are subconciously denigrating back up point guards based on an impossible comparison to Nash.
Is it a coincidence that the Suns haven’t found a suitable back up pg for the duration of Nash’s second stint in the basin?
I think a lot of the problem is that Nash’s style is very hard to replicate. When the back up point guard comes in to the game he is unable to duplicate Nash’s temperament and verve. It is also difficult for an offense to completely shift gears based on the substitiution of one player/position. In a way this is one of the weaknesses associated with a Steve Nash offense….
The problem pertaining to the point guard situation is threefold.
A. Steve Nash is old and will need to be replaced soon.
B. Brooks would be an acceptable back up (if he can be had at a reasonable price – which I doubt he can) but is not of the caliber of elite starting point guards. If he ends up as the Suns starter in a few years, then plan on having weak point guard play in comparison to the league as a whole.
C. Dowdell is probably no better than a third stringer.
So, if Brooks can’t be had on the cheap the Suns are better off looking for the point guard of the future than overpaying for someone who is a below average starter by league standards.
In the final equation, the Suns will probably end up doing just as bang up of a job of finding Steve’s successor as they did with replacing Amare.

Woohooo! More Small Forwards!!!

I’m sure Andre Kirilenko and Tayshaun Prince will do just fine running the point.
Re-sign BAMF.
That is a clever, amusing,
and unfortunately felicitous comparison.

Resign Brooks
I took a break from Suns ball and basketball in general, so I think now that signing Brooks is a good thing because he brings a veteran presence to the bench and he can score too so when our bench struggles he can take over, this will be good for both parties since he will have enough time to learn the offense and develop the chemistry needed to make our bench one of the best again, I would sign Yi Jianlian at PF,Why? Because he is similar to Frye and since Frye has improved Yi can too and he is young too, he is 7 feet tall too and will cause alot of mismatches for other teams.
