I do not want to trade Steve Nash.  I would be quite heartbroken if it happened.  I hope that he retires a Sun.  However, I also want our team to be good, and I think we have to consider any means that will accomplish that end.  If the Hawks agreed to the following trade, should we do it? 

Josh Smith, Jeff Teague, and Zaza Pachulia for Nash, Dudley, and Lopez.   Trade works on trade machine.

Why the Hawks do it:  They may be tired of Josh Smith and want to get rid of his onerous contract.  They would get a younger center that has a higher ceiling and more years ahead than Pachulia.  Losing Teague would hurt after the playoffs he just had, but they would get a HOFer in Nash who would look good playing alongside JJ and Horford.  If Lopez panned out, the trade could be quite good for them.  (Of course with the season he had, that could easily kibosh the whole thing.)  Dudley would start at the SF for them.  They might try to throw Marvin Williams in to get rid of his contract, but I am not taking that as a deal maker or deal breaker.  Needing help at the center position, they might even take a look at a guy like Oden or Yao.  If either of those guys panned out alongside Nash, Johnson, and Horford?  Oh man.  

Why the Suns do it:  Teague could easily be the PG of the future.  He would give us outstanding defense and a knack for getting in the paint and scoring.  I think he's going to become a star.  Smith would also give us defense and give us the PF we need.  He's only 25.  If he can keep his head on straight, we should definitely be a perennial playoff team.  The West is wide open right now and ripe for the taking.  We should have a chance to do pretty well with the following lineup, esp if we get a good shooting guard:

Free Agent or Draftee (Alec Burks?  Afflalo?)

Hill

Smith 

Gortat

Bench

Brooks or Dowdell

Pietrus

Childress

Frye 

Pachulia

Can you imagine having Teague, Afflalo, Childress, Smith and Gortat out at the same time?  Would the other team even score? We have to get some defense, and we have to build for the future.  If we can get Smith or Teague without giving up Nash, we'd obviously do it, but I just don't see that happening.  In this scenario, we'd even get both.  I kind of doubt the Hawks would do it, but I think we'd have to say yes.  I really don't want to give up Dudley either, but I think this trade makes us better, now and especially in the future.
