BSOTS Draft Preview 2011: Tristan Thompson Is Canadian

The following contains elements of Draft Express's breakdown of Tristan Thompson in addition to my own thoughts and opinions. Although I'll do my best to educate you about the strengths and weaknesses of the former Longhorn, I still highly recommend checking out Draft Express yourself.

TRISTAN THOMPSON

  • Position - Power Foward
  • School - Texas (1 season)
  • Important Measurables - Height: 6'9"; Weight: 227 lbs; Wingspan: 7'1.25"; Standing Reach: 9'0.5"
  • 2010-2011 Stats - 13.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg (3.8 orpg), 2.4 bpg, 54.6 fg%, 48.7 ft%

FIRST WORD

Tristan Thompson is probably the name that is most commonly linked to Phoenix in mock drafts. All the signs are pointing to the Suns drafting a big man, and Thompson could be the high-potential power forward the Suns desperately need. Hit the jump for a breakdown of his game.

Star-divide

OFFENSE

Thompson is a high-motor player who scores many of his points on hustle plays. He's very quick and is an excellent offensive rebounder which leads to a lot of easy put-backs and close looks. But outside of his offensive rebounding prowess, he is extremely raw offensively. While watching some clips of him, I was reminded of a young Amar'e Stoudemire. Thompson does not have any sort of a developed back-to-the-basket game and often resorted to crazy fall-away shots if he couldn't get close enough to dunk it. He also is not a particularly gifted passer. However, he did show signs of becoming a good face-up player as the season rolled on, preferring to use his quickness to blow by his man and finish at the rim. You may be saying to yourself at this point, "A young Amar'e? Draft that kid!" But the problem in that he's not Amar'e. STAT is bigger, more explosive, and has a uniquely soft touch around the basket that I just don't see with Thompson. This lack of touch and his raw skillset really manifest themselves in his mid-range jumper, which is virtually non-existent. With his quickness, he could develop into a nice pick-and-roll finisher, and this might be one area on offense where he can contribute.

DEFENSE

Where Thompson has a long way to go on offense, he is much more ready to contribute defensively. His quick feet and length mean he can be a real disruptive force in the paint. Although a bit under-sized, Thompson has a strong lower body and will hopefully be able to hold his own in the post. His game against Arizona's Derrick Williams, where he held the top pick to just 4-14 shooting, shows that he has what it takes to lock down the best of the best. DX suggests that he may even be able to stay with some small forwards, which is a testament to his defensive versatility. Considering how good the Texas big man is at cleaning up the offensive glass, it may surprise you to learn that his defensive rebounding fundamentals are not quite up to snuff. He is often caught out of position and can frequently be seen watching the ball rather than looking for a man to box out. This is an area he must improve, although with the effort he shows in the rest of his game this should be easily corrected.

PERSONALITY/CHARACTER

Here's his interview with DX so you can judge this category for yourself. I will say this though: Earl Clark he is not.

Tristan Thompson Draft Combine Interview (via DraftExpress)

Oh, and he's Canadian.

BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

Tristan Thompson has a lot of potential, but he has a long way to go. He will likely be more ready to play right away than last year's draft pick Gani Lawal, and he could challenge Lawal and Hakim Warrick for the back-up PF spot as a rookie. But if he's taken, don't expect much more than Lou Amundson production.

If you don't believe me, here's DX's conclusion:

Thompson's potential, at this point at least, far outweighs his ability to contribute in the NBA and any team looking to draft him should be patient. It would be ideal for Thompson to develop alongside of a skilled center and a creative point guard, as his energy and athleticism are by far his most attractive attributes at this stage and he will likely struggle to create or produce on his own much initially. It is far more likely, however, that he will begin his career coming off of the bench and that playing time will depend on his energy level and defensive effectiveness.

I'm not sure how much of his potential Thompson will be able to realize, but judging by this paragraph Phoenix seems to be an excellent team for him to begin his career with. Marcin Gortat anchoring the middle means he can be free to move around off the ball, and Steve Nash will always get him the ball where he can be successful with it. While he's not my favorite prospect in this draft, I wouldn't mind if he's the pick at #13 (assuming players like Biyombo, etc. are already gone).

So what do you think my fellow Bright-Siders?

I’m sorry Wilfredo that I didn’t really get around to this sooner. I see that BSotS has already put the draft team together, and it appears I missed out. I was planning on doing a massive write-up, but life got in the way. Here is the part that I finished however.

Great work Omaha

before, all I wanted for the Suns to draft was Jimmer or Biyombo … but after all, it looks like this Tristan Thompson is a likeable guy and could be a special player. After watching vids of him in college, I’m okay with it if Suns draft him at 13. And you were right, we’re not getting anyone good at 13 anyway.

I don't know what to put in my sig.

by shawndy on Jun 20, 2011 12:00 AM MST reply actions

Nice to see a workup on this player

since he’s the most likely guy to end up in a Suns uniform.

This guy is going to be a “solid rotation player” – in about 3 years, for somebody. I don’t think the Suns need any more role players, so Thompson isn’t high on my wish list.

The best thing about selecting Thompson will be that he pushes Hakim Warrick out of the regular rotation.

Bismack Biyombo or Bust!!!

I like his potential,

but it’s a bummer that he has a similar playstyle to Lawal. I’d rather have us take a different player type, but if there’s nothing else left at 13, I will gladly settle for this guy.

by Lompe on Jun 20, 2011 9:49 AM MST reply actions

I don't think he's that similar to Lawal...

I think Omaha had it correct when he said he is much more similar to a raw and slightly shorter young Amare. I agree with everything Omaha said in the article about his lack of touch and finess…but those are things which can be developed for the most part.

I really do like his potential and there’s no doubt Rhompson already knows how to use his body (power + athleticism) to score in the low post…I think this aspect of his game will almost certainly continue to improve and it is this aspect I think would help us the most.

If I wasn’t also so high on Jimmer, Biyombo, and Brooks I would be all over drafting this guy. I have a feeling a lot of fans would be disappointed if we end up taking him at #13, but he could really end uo being one heck of a player for us!

Thanks BBB.

The touch is true to a certain extent, but I also think it’s something you have or you don’t. MOst guys that are terrible shooters just do not have any touch on their shot, and that is something that can be difficult to change. It can be done, but it’s not something you bank on.

So

On Hollinger’s recent draft rater. Thompson is actually rated behind Irving and Williams. In fact his rating is actually higher than Williams. This could mean he is a steal, but it also means he could move up too high for us to draft. In fact I have already seen a few mocks that have him going 6 to the Wizards or 9 to the Bobcats.

Hadn't paid much attention to Thompson until the tournament

He was dominant in Texas’ first round win over Oakland, with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 7 blocks, outplaying much-hyped Oakland big man Keith Benson. Certainly passed the eyeball test for me, but he definitely is raw. Looked like he was getting by on his athleticism, not surprising for a young player like him. On the higher end of the risk/reward scale, and I’m OK with that. No complaints from me if we take him, depending on who else is available.

Note that his Texas teammate Jordan Hamilton is about the same height and weight as Thompson and was a better rebounder than Thompson last year.

by East Bay Ray on Jun 20, 2011 10:59 AM MST reply actions

Defensively yes.

Thompson is a really good offensive rebounder though, which is something this team lacks (at least in the regular rotation).

But he plays defense!

Seriously though, if we could get a guy that was both a good defender and offensive player he’d be a top 5 pick in this draft. You can’t have both, it’s either one or the other. Our team needs to get better defensively and we need a scorer. I’d rather use our pick to get a defender than a scorer because I’m not going to count on a rookie who was selected at 13 to suddenly be our go to guy.

The exception is Jimmer because he also has the potential to replace Nash who will be gone soon and this team needs a reliable backup PG.

He'll play him if he's good and ready enough to beat both Warrick and Lawal out of the rotation.

It shouldn’t be hard to beat Warrick out of the rotation either. He doesn’t play defense and his offense is very limited and inconsistent.

Who would you rather take?

Thompson- poor offensive player with much potential in that area. Good defender, but questionable rebounder.
Faried- poor offensive player with little potential in that area. Great rebounder, but questionable defender.

Both these guys can contribute right away in a Lou Amundson role. Thompson has the potential to become an all-around player while Faried has the potential to become a rebounding and defensive specialist with little offense.

I’d be fine with either one and would take them over the Morris Brothers. I’m still not so sure about Byombo, I think he’s more hype than anything. Everything about him is questionable. Plus, what if we end up hurting his development more than anything because our coaching staff can’t teach defense and rebounding? The same could be said for the guys above as well. They and Byombo would probably be better off going to a team like the Spurs, Nuggets, Bulls… Yea, if we get a defensive coordinator that would make me feel better about taking these guys, but still, this is Phoenix where defense doesn’t happen.

I know that kind of contradicts what I said above, but it’s something to think about. Maybe we are better off taking an offensive player? Yet at some point, this franchise needs to man up and learn how to play defense. I’m still having memories of Nocioni bullying our front-line and putting up like 33 points. Better to start now than never.

Any news on the potential defensive coordinators they’ll hire? I know Gentry said he had a few more interviews to do.

His offensive potential relies on the Suns finding another PG with Nash' caliber of playmaking skills

I think the Suns would be better serve if we could get a PF who can readily create his own shot, not to mention someone that comes with a polished post play and footwork.

What’s questionable about a huge wingspan or vertical leap?

Why does a year in Spanish league count for less than a year in college? I mean… Spanish league is tougher than college ball.

Why does everyone assume that no jumpshot = no offense? The guy is averaging 3 FT attempts a game in limited minutes.

Mentioned that he was from California in his statement that his Hamilton’s motor is iffy, as if that’s relevant. Apparently, nobody in the state of California works. I’d research this, but I’m too lazy.

Wiki calls him a "cornerman".

In a lifetime of watching and talking about basketball, I have never heard this term before today. Has anybody else?

Cornerman is a term used in basketball to denote a player who can play both the small forward and power forward basketball positions. “Cornerman” is sometimes interchangeably used with the term “forward” 1, but generally refers to players that can play both forward positions.

Udoh was the freaking SIXTH pick last year

And he missed half the season with an injury. Gani Lawal missed most of his rookie season with an injury and people are touting him to be Jesus 2.0. Thus since Gani was a mid 2nd round pick and Udoh was the 6th pick, the transitive property would suggest that Udoh will revolutionize the game.

I'm meh on both of those

I don’t like giving up on Lopez but Udoh’s oikay, and the 11 is an additional lottery pick.

One thing I’ve learned though is to always think the opposite of what Gambo says.

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

Shumpert? Check.

Udoh seems like a bigger version of Brian Skinner and the 11 pick allows us to get a PG. That trade seems reasonable. However, I don’t believe they want Shumpert over Jimmer.

I'd take that in a heartbeat.

We’re talking about a draft pick higher than where Lopez was originally drafted, and a player who was drafted higher than Lopez was. And Udoh isn’t a headcase with health concerns like Lopez is. I’ve said “don’t sell Lopez low”. This isn’t low. Actually, it sounds too good to be true.

So GS will trade a 2010 #6 pick PF/C who has yet to reach his potential PLUS the #11 pick in the 2011 draft…for a 2008 #15 pick C who has yet to reach his potential but also comes with a bad back?

He didn't trade Pau for Marc Gasol and Kwame

He traded for Kwame and a second rounder, it could have been anyone, credit goes to scouts for getting Marc Gasol. Sorry you were right about him leaving, but he was trying to trade Gasol, he said something along the lines of Gasol being an all-star but the Grizz need a superstar and they were going nowhere with the current team.

by Suns R Us on Jun 20, 2011 4:41 PM MST up reply actions

I really don't want to argue this trade again, but...

Quick Facts
- The Grizzlies’ all-time franchise leader in field goal percentage (.555), was acquired in a blockbuster trade that sent brother Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 1, 2008.

That’s from nba.com. The Grizz got Marc Gasol, cap space that was used in part to sign Zach Randolph, and a draft pick that was used on Greivis Vasquez. Of course, the Lakers got a guy who helped them to a couple titles, but the Grizzlies didn’t come away with nothing.

by East Bay Ray on Jun 20, 2011 6:27 PM MST up reply actions

I never denied Marc Gasols BB Skills

I’m saying they didn’t know he would be any good, he wasn’t proven. It just like if we trade Gortat for the #2 pick. People criticize it because the player is unproven and Gortat is. But it a few years the #2 pick could be the one being an all time leader in FG for the Suns.

Why assume best case scenario for Lopez but not for Udoh or the player we would get with the pick?

Udoh won’t bust. He won’t be a star or probably even ever a starter, but he’ll be a very good backup big man for years.

by East Bay Ray on Jun 20, 2011 3:58 PM MST up reply actions

I was just trying to make a point, but your right.

We shouldn’t assume best or worst case with either player. Most people here are assuming worst case for Lopez, but the guy still has got a lot of potential and has shown more than Udoh. I don’t think trading him for the 11th pick a lone is too far fetched.

by MMotherwell on Jun 20, 2011 4:19 PM MST up reply actions

I am guessing one of our other guys is involved

I would let go of Pietrus/Childress/Warrick with lopez. Maybe even sign and trade brooks if that is possible in this scenario. Doesn’t seem likely that you could package that with another player. Alex, your the salary guy, does that work?

by Suns Fan For Life on Jun 20, 2011 3:36 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, a straight Udoh/Lopez swap is not possible. Lopez makes 1 mil less (Udoh = 3 mil, Lopez = 2 mil).

Unlessss….each team uses an available trade exception to make it 2 separate deals (ie. Lopez for #11, then Udoh for #13).

Otherwise, more players are required. And the only 2 real options are for the Suns to toss in Lawal AND Dowdell (they make 700K total) or make it a huge trade that includes Ellis or Biedrins for Chill/Pietrus/Dudley combo… In other words, it sounds quite sticky.

Brooks cannot be traded at all, until the new CBA is done.

I think the Suns plan is this if they make the deal with GSW

Get ahead of Utah to draft Jimmer
Utah will probably draft Donatas, so we could get Tristan Thompson.
Then we could trade Warrick for Cash or a 2nd rounder or something or include him in the Warriors deal. Vince Carter would be bought out obviously. I would assume Pietrus is also traded or if he is not Childress is, I just say Pietrus is. We would also let Aaron Brooks walk and try to sign a SG, lets just say Aaron Affalo. Then we would have
C – Gortat, Udoh
PF – Frye, Thompson, Udoh
SF – Hill, Childress
SG – Affalo, Dudley
PG – Nash, Jimmer, Dowdell
Pretty good, young team, but not playoff contenders yet, just a very deep team.
