With the 13th Pick in the 2011 NBA Draft the Phoenix Suns Select: Markieff Morris
With the 13th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft the Phoenix Suns select Kansas Forward Markieff Morris. Markieff is the older brother (by 7 minutes) of Marcus Morris who also played for Kansas and was drafted by the Houston Rockets with the 14th pick. At 6'10", 240 pounds and with a 6'10" wingspan Markieff Morris is the bigger of the two brothers and he is also a basketball player with an established position being the Power Forward. This in contrast to Marcus who is a few inches shorter, considered a 'tweener' (between positions, the PF and the SF) and plays a more finesse type of ball. Markieff is a powerful big man that likes the mix-it up down in the paint, but also he can step out and shoot from distance with skilled precision, an attribute that makes him an understandable and a wise choice for the Phoenix Suns.
But imagine that, for the 3rd time in the last 3 years the Phoenix Suns have drafted a twin brother. The third time's a charm right? Well, that's what we hope since the first two attempts have not panned out for the Suns. Taylor Griffin is somewhere in Europe playing 'really hard', and Robin Lopez is being shopped all around the league as we speak after disappointing seasons here in the valley.
But I have a feeling that this situation with Markieff may be different. For one thing - this will be the first time in 3 tries that the Suns will receive the higher drafted brother... It's funny that the one prospect that we didn't preview here at Bright Side of the Suns ends up being 'the guy'. With that being said, let's go ahead and take a look at what we have here with Markieff Morris.
Hear it from his mouth yesterday - a lot of the questions you might have are answered here.
And here's a clip of him working out that shows off some good footwork and a little about his game.
I'd also suggest you check out his bio page at Draft Express and scroll down to see the video on his Strengths/Weaknesses.
Some of the strengths listed are his athleticism, his interior scoring, shooting (shoots well from mid-range and shot 42% behind the arc averaging almost 3 attempts per game last year), his rebounding (offensively rebounds at a high rate) and his good individual defense and defensive positioning.
Markieff definitely addresses a need for the Phoenix Suns that hasn't quite been taken care of since Amare Stoudemire left a year ago at the Power Forward position. We've needed a scoring PF that can defend and also score on the block or at least off the pick and pop so we can keep the floor spaced. Also from watching video on Morris he seems very comfortable finishing on the break at the rim and handling alley-oops and other interior passes from his teammates. That is something that will be very important for him here with the Phoenix Suns.
Another positive I can find is his toughness. He's scrappy, get's excited after making big plays and he isn't afraid to speak his mind. From this article he's quoted on talking a little trash to the number 2 pick in this year's draft, Derrick Williams -
"I didn't think he was as good as advertised," Morris said. "He got the benefit of the calls from the ref and we had to guard him different. He definitely had a good game against us, because we couldn't guard him how we wanted to guard him, and that's what happened."
So when he hears that Williams is a lock to go in the top two, Morris said, "It's still surprises me. What he did to Duke, he wouldn't do that to me or my brother [Marcus]. I'm dead serious. He wouldn't. At all. He's good. But if we was to work out, I would go at him and I would be able to stop him more than people would expect, you know what I mean."
I like. We need some attitude. Some toughness.
The draft isn't over yet as I write - but I suspect this might be our only takeaway from tonight's actions. I hope I'm wrong because we can use all the help and mojo we can get. If I had to grade the pick at this very moment - I would say it's a good choice... though the fact that Kawhi Leonard was also available for the Suns at 13, and the fact that the San Antonio Spurs just traded away George Hill to the Pacers to take Kawhi - those things make my belly ache just a little bit.
But we needed a PF that could rebound/defend and score and our FO stuck to their guns and took the best available option. Only time will tell the real story.
This humble blogger approves of the pick and is excited to see just how well he can spread the floor and operate in the pick and roll. Maybe we can gets some authoritative dunks from someone other than Hakim Warrick.

But other than that, I’m OK.
He’s probably better for the team than Marcus because he’s more of a banger, and we could use that. He’s also the better three-point threat.

Yes.
What did people expect in a weak draft at #13? This is actually a good pick. Sure, we already have a weak PF who can shoot the three, but I think Markieff is a little more physical than Frye and is being judged too harshly.
San Antonio traded for Kawhi Leonard...
That tells me we probably should have picked him.
I like Leonard more than Hill

I've never watched Markieff play,
but based on all descriptions of him, he sounds like exactly what we needed – or at least the best we could have expected to get at 13 in this draft. I’m going to go ahead and be happy with the decision.
At least we have a defensive PF
Frye is fine with the offence but defence is his weakness, and Warrick….well, let forget about him for now..
with Morris, hopefully we can have better rebounds and defense in tight games like the one against Lakers last season, so our defense should be improving
I am dissapointed
…Leonard, Jordan Hamilton, Chris Singleton, Kenneth Faried were still there.
The Spurs are going to get great rookies as usual, and for that, I hate them.
Sometimes I think that we are not interested in winning. I hate to say it but a major free agent is not coming here to play. We have to be agrresive during the draft and hope to get an impact player. Hopefully they can get another pick and draft either Jordan Hamilton, Josh Shelby or Jeremy Tyler..Or Marshon Brooks
Only now?

I challenge the assumption some make that "we picked the lesser twin"
As others have already said, Markieff is a legit-size PF with a PF’s game, while Marcus is a tweener. Sure, Marcus accomplished more in college because he’s more of an all-around scorer, but he’s a bit undersized. I’ve seen Marcus projected as more of a SF.
I wonder what this means for Hakim Warrick and Gani Lawal. Right now we have Channing Frye, Hakim Warrick, Morris and Lawal at PF. Frye and Morris likely aren’t going anywhere, so what becomes of the other two?
Taylor wasn't a twin, was he?

The reason I’m upset is because I think this pick could have been used to get a power forward from either Utah or Minnesota because they are both overcrowded.. I’d rather have Beasley, Randolph, Millsap, or Favors than Morris
Hmm...

i think DX's best case scenario of Markieff is spot on.
i definitely see the potential in him to be Rasheed Wallace without the crazy — good post game, ability to knock down the 3, good one on one post defender. but i think he will probably end up being a better rebounder than Sheed because he simply has better work ethic.

Euty asked for a serious answer, so here goes.
I’m a father of twins and I looked into this a bit.
There are two polar possibilities and a lot of gray between, so bear with me.
Some twins, when they go their separate ways as adults, do face depression and feelings of loneliness.
Others, It’s like, good riddance. Don’t have to share my room any more.
Most, it’s somewhere in the middle.
Modern thinking is it’s best to get them into separate classes, etc. early so they can develop as individuals and there isn’t as much separation anxiety later.
My hope is that Markieff will actually blossom as a player now that he is no longer in his brother’s shadow.
He needs to know that he’s not the Avis child of the Morris brothers anymore. He’s the freaking power forward for the Phoenix freakin’ Suns. If he gets that, he’ll be great.

Q. Will you feel, if the Suns just stay content at 13 and made no moves at all, that you could get better moving forward?
A. With that pick? Yeah, I think this draft has got a lot of parity. I’m not one of those who get into trying to predict how good the players are or where they’re going to end up.
Between this and “who knows” I’m thinking that his reputation as a “basketball genius” is unwarranted.

One of our better picks in the past couple of drafts. I would have liked to have gotten the guy from SD State, because he has amazing upside, but I understand the Morris pick. I am not shocked we took the “lesser” brother, but after reading a little more about him, I think I am at least two paces back from the edge of the cliff. Draftexpress on Markieff
-Like his twin brother, Markieff Morris had a very efficient season on the whole, scoring 1.08 points per-possession on the year (4th). Though some of that had to do with the development of his perimeter shooting ability, Morris’s offensive abilities are still grounded in the fact that he’s a terrific finisher.
Nearly 41.2% of Morris’s shots came at the rim, and he converted a terrific 69% (3rd) of them. With roughly 40% of his touches coming from roll man situations, cuts to the basket, and offensive rebounds, Morris’s aggressiveness at the point of attack is just one bright spot for him here.
On top of his ability to catch and finish, he also showed marked development with his back to the basket and away from the rim. With some 34% of his possessions coming in the post, Morris scored on 51% (5th) of them. Though he’s not as prolific or versatile as his brother, Morris was able to score one-on-one down low at a fairly consistent level.
Anyone who watched Kansas this season knows that Morris emerged as a competent jump shooter. Nearly 20% of his total shot attempts were jumpers, and he hit them at a second ranked 43% rate. Though he was attempted just 1.5 per-game, the development of his scoring range has Markieff a situational versatility moving to the next level that he simply did not have as an underclassman.
-Marcus Morris is not an elite physical specimen, but he did register a positive wingspan to height ratio (6-10:6-7) at a solid 230 pounds. While he’s still slightly short and not as long as the average power forward in our database, his mature offensive repertoire should help him overcome those limitations early in his career. Considering that many thought he would come in with a shorter wingspan than his height based on measurements conducted last summer, he probably helped himself in this regard, as he joked about in an interview with us. With that said, Morris would have the shortest wingspan of any power forward drafted in the first round according to our database.
-Much like his brother, Markieff Morris didn’t blow anyone away with his measurements, but he did measure ¾ of an inch taller, 10 pounds heavier, and with arms 2 ½" longer than his twin brother. His measurements are almost identical to those of fellow Kansas alum Darrell Arthur.
Last time we checked in on Markieff Morris in late December, he appeared to be coming into his own as a terrific complement to his twin brother, Marcus, on the offensive end. Though he committed 6 first half turnovers as the Jayhawks fell victim to VCU’s improbable Final Four run, Morris’s body of work since our last update has continued to impress scouts, to the point that he’s now viewed as a consensus first round pick.
A strong, explosive, and physical power forward with a readymade NBA frame, Morris has come a long way since his freshman year at Kansas when he shot just 44.8% from the field. Now able to match his athleticism with a number of promising offensive tools, the junior appears to have turned the corner as a prospect.
Perhaps the biggest change in Morris’s game this season has come on the perimeter, where he’s emerged as a reliable spot-up threat, especially when left open. Though Morris knocked down 52.6% of his three-point attempts as a sophomore, his jump shot had not emerged as a significant part of his offensive arsenal, as he only attempted 19 3-point shots all season. Attempting almost two jumpers per-game this season, and connecting on 42.4% of them according to Synergy Sports Technology, Morris has been consistently making the shots he’s getting when defenders collapse on his teammates’ post-ups and drive-and-kicks, something that makes him a valuable offensive cog in many NBA offenses as a floor-spacer.
Around the basket, Morris has continued to improve as a finisher. Progressing steadily with his skill-level in recent years, Morris’s coordination has caught up with his aggression and athleticism around the basket, as evidenced by his near 70% shooting in finishing situations this season and highly ranked 62.5% two-point field goal percentage.
The same can’t necessarily be said for his post play, where he continues to get by on his ability to pin his man on the high-side and finish the lob passes subsequently sent his way. Considering that he connected on 51% of his post-up opportunities according to Synergy Sports Technology, it is safe to say that Morris wasn’t hampered by his lack of a go-to-move on the college level, but it will be important for him to refine his post-game if he wants to see touches consistently in one-on-one situations with his back to the basket on the NBA level as he doesn’t create shots for himself from the midrange.
Though Morris still has a ways to develop, and could stand to cut down on his turnovers and improve his overall decision-making, the progress he’s made this season has been overwhelmingly positive. Looking at his freshman season alone, Morris seemed bound for a basic catch-and-finish role predicated on hustle and defensive toughness that would have him spending virtually all of his times at the rim or in the paint. His offensive skill set now fills a variety of roles that fit nicely with the ever-increasing versatility of the power forward position on the NBA level.
Defensively, Morris has clearly improved on paper, cutting down on his fouls and rebounding the ball at an impressive rate. However, it is his toughness and the way he takes things personally on the defensive end that are most intriguing. His wingspan won’t allow him to be a big factor as a weakside shot blocker, but he’s got the mentality to be a solid one-on-one defensive player and a quality area rebounder early in his career.
While Markieff Morris may not have a tremendous feel for the game or superstar potential, he has all the tools and versatility to enjoy a long NBA career and be a solid contributor on both ends of the floor. Considering his steady ascension over the course of his three year college career, he could clearly continue to improve if given the minutes necessary to feel out his game in the NBA. With a number of highly touted power forward prospects electing to return to school, the recently declared Morris will surely look even more attractive ond raft day.
And a good video breakdown of him: http://www.draftexpress.com/article/Markieff-Morris-Video-Breakdown-3738/

Unlikely phx gets a 2 rd pick now. Once reggie jackson went late 1st there was no one suns deemed worthy of trading in for
he was right about markieff, might as well believe everything he says now. apocalypse
So our roster right now looks like this
Assuming we keep Brooks
Nash / Brooks / Dowdell
Pietrus / Dudley
Hill / Chilldress
Frye / Warrick / Lawal / Morris
Gortat / Lopez / Siler
Massive logjam at the 4 spot
No starting-caliber 2 guard
No solid backup PG(our FO doesn’t seem to think Brooks is the guy, and ZB is nice but not ready yet IMO)
We have to somehow consolidate our pieces to address those concerns. If Warrick/Chilldress/Pietrus/Brooks could be moved to upgrade our roster, then we should go for it. Of course….who the hell wants those players?
Le sigh.

Talk about a team wheeling and dealing!!
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2011/news/story?id=6698564
is the link but here is the essential story:
The Rockets sent the rights to Nikola Mirotic, the 23rd pick, and No. 38, along with Brad Miller and a 2013 first-round pick, to acquire Flynn and Montiejunas.
The Timberwolves then turned around and dealt the rights to Mirotic to Chicago for the rights to Cleveland State guard Norris Cole, selected 28th, and the 43rd pick.
In yet another deal, Minnesota traded the rights to Cole to Miami for the 31st overall pick, a future second-round pick and cash considerations.
Houston initially sent the 38th overall pick to Minnesota, then bought it back to take Florida forward Chandler Parsons.

For where they drafted, they got good value. Montejunas has a lot of talent. That could be one of the steals of the draft.

I don't know much about Markieff
Except that during college his brother was the much more skilled player offensively. The most I see coming from Markieff is the 9th or 10th guy in your rotation….That’s not someone you should draft out of the lottery, however. I would’ve drafted Jordan Hamilton. I must admit I’m much more familiar with him since he played ball for a team I watched quite often but I just always thought his game transitioned very well into the NBA. Great shooting stroke, long wing span, can post guys up if need be, has NBA 3-pt range, and would’ve been the perfect wing player for this teams future. With, some time in the NBA I think he has the ability to become a great defender as well…Instead, he went to the Mavs where he’ll become Caron Butler 2.0…Except better than the first version.
I’ll support Mr. Morris but I don’t think he was the right choice for this team, especially with guys drafted below him that have a much higher ceiling.
"Look, don't relax on Hakim Warrick, Josh Smith. He'll put it on your face in a hurry."-Eddie Johnson aka Best. Commentator. Ever.
Hamilton did?
That sucks…Especially if they plan on bringing back Chandler and Gallinari…He’ll get no playing time.
"The Phoenix Suns always get the retarded brother; Markieff Morris, Taylor Griffin, Robin Lopez, and the Collns twin."-Some dude from Twitter.
and, he dropped all the way to the bottom of the first round. Something about shot selection and slow feet.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Shot selection can be fixed, but slow feet?
I never saw that and I watched almost every Texas Longhorn game. He wasn’t explosive but he was more than adequate with a great wingspan. I just thought we have a clear need at shooting guard and Hamilton was a good match for this team.
"The Phoenix Suns always get the retarded brother; Markieff Morris, Taylor Griffin, Robin Lopez, and the Collns twin."-Some dude from Twitter.
I guess I just read into this, from DX, as having slow feet. Suns already have guys who get regularly blown by…
Probably the weakest aspect of Hamilton’s game right now is his defensive presence. His fundamentals are extremely poor, as he regularly bites on pump-fakes, gambles for steals, falls down mid-possession, and is very upright in his stance, making it easy for opponents to blow by him. His lateral quickness looks average at best, and his intensity level isn’t very high to compensate for that, as he just isn’t physical enough, and doesn’t seem to take very much pride in shutting down his man.
Even though he has the offensive skills to operate as a shooting guard in the NBA, his defensive shortcomings could very well push him to the 3, where he isn’t quite as dangerous a mismatch.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I think that’s a good point. I think he’ll be okay, but he’s definitely not someone that should have been drafted in the top 18. He slid a bit, but it’s not like we should have taken him.

My actual assessment
Now that I have calmed down I am willing to say that Morris is ok and is a better fit for the Suns than his brother. The idea of a better twin is silly when their games are this close. It comes down to fit and Markieff fits better on the Suns. I can see him as a Rasheed or even a Boozer. It was disappointing but none of the “steals” fell to us that some of the mock drafts had predicted so the only players you might say we should have picked up was Kawhi or Singleton and their wings to the Suns and they didn’t want wings.
What was really stupid was the Dragic trade. Dragic’s main problem was lacking Frye to space the floor for the bench so he could go to work driving. With Morris as a competent big man three point shooter we could have had Frye backup Gortat or Markieff back up Frye and would have always had a three point shooting big man on the floor. We could have kept Dragic and had the 23 pick. Hell maybe if we continued with the way we were going with Dragic we might even have had a higher draft pick but that is moot (and Nash might have wanted out if we sucked that bad).
Dragic’s main problem was lacking Frye to space the floor for the bench so he could go to work driving.
That hurt, but I wouldn’t call that his main problem.

is he really that much more talented than Grant Hill, Jared Dudley and Josh Childress? In his rookie season, I mean… He’d have been stuck playing backup PF for a year or two and realized he was way undersized…
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Potential though is what I was looking at. Plus we let him go to the spurs.. I have a bad feeling he is going to be a thorn for us some time in the future
But we did what a lot of people don’t do in a draft. We drafted for a need not for talent. So if we grade that way. I say need was an A- and talent more like a B-. So overall a B. I see him as a David Thompson with range.

I think more deals are in the making
with the way they handled VC’s contract and Lopez is as good as gone. And Josh Smith is still available
I remain optimistic that some deal will get done
I think there is a better chance of obtaining Paul Millsap rather than Josh Smith.
Yes, the Hawks are in a bit of a financial pickle but I don’t think they’re in a rush to blow up the team after what they accomplished in the playoffs. I think the Jazz are ready to see what Derrick Favors can do so Millsap is going to be expendable. We’d probably have too get a third team involved in the trade though since the only piece we have the Jazz would be interested in is Pietrus.
"The Phoenix Suns always get the retarded brother; Markieff Morris, Taylor Griffin, Robin Lopez, and the Collns twin."-Some dude from Twitter.
yeah, Paul Millsap looks ripe for the taking doesn’t he?
Utah has Kanter and Favors on the front line, along with Al Jefferson and Millsap. Very few teams would want Al Jeff on talent alone, not to mention the albatross contract. Millsap’s contract is smaller and shorter, just like his body.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Lol, he sure does. They have Okur too, though he’s likely gone. Wonder if they offered Jefferson and were willing to take something like Pietrus, Chilly, and Lopez, should we do it? I haven’t checked salaries on that. Interesting decision if they wanted to move him instead of Millsap.

Al Jefferson
was too slow for the Suns I thought? I remember we were floating the idea of getting him when the Wolves were looking to move him but he ultimately wouldn’t be a good fit here. If we are going to make a trade with Utah I’d preferred Millsap, although J Smith and drum roll Derrick William would be on the top of my wish list
yeah no way on Al Jefferson. Utah figured out real quick he’s a seive on defense. Note that, before the Deron Williams trade, they were worse than prior seasons.

I think it depends on if you're looking for him to run the point
You need your PG to be able to run the team offensively especially in an up and down style like the Knicks. If you’re planning on running him at SG for a while until he develops offensively, then that’s a different story.

It's a safe pick, we didn't go for the highest talent upside.
There will have to be moves made at some point. We’re not going to make the playoff with the addition of Morris only. New York taking Shumpert has me a little worried, i can’t help but think there will be a deal with us (PHX) to get Nash or maybe Lopez.
If we gave the Knicks Lopez and we got back Shumpert and a future 1st rounder i could live with that. Let the mind games begin.
i won't change Lopez for Shumpert.
is changing nothing there. If we can get Fields too, maybe

??? What you mean? I thought they did great. They didn’t need Leonard unless they move Granger, and he is not an “Indiana” type of player anyway. He’s more corn rows than corn field, ya know. On the other hand, Collison was a HUGE disappointment last year, both to Indiana and to almost all my fantasy teams (damn him). They needed another guard. George Hill can play both spots. And he’s a high-character guy too. I am SHOCKED that the Spurs traded him. They should have gotten rid of Parker and RJ. But I don’t think anyone wanted them. Anyway, the Pacers did well.

Terrible pick imho
What is the point in this pick. I realize we are weak at the PF position but what does this fix? Is he going to start over Frye in his first season with no truly defined skills? No. Is he going to take Hak’s spot as backup PF this year? Maybe, but is he going to be any better than Hak on the average? Probably not, and that would lead to us paying Hak a ridiculous amount of money to not play.
To me all this pick does is confirm that the front office has no faith Lawal will ever be a decent PF for us, which is just an admission that we wasted our picks last year. What we have essentially done is create the same log jam at PF we had at SF.
At SF we essentially currently have 3 players under contract with the expectation we will sign Hill to play out these next couple years with Nash. That gives us 4 SF on our roster with Hill being as fringe as you can get to championship quality starter.
Now look at our PF slot. I am a huge Frye fan but realistically he is not a starter on a serious team, but neither are Hak, Lawal, or Morris. We have 4 role players now at PF. Two of them are on long, untradable contracts, and two are rookies with little to no value.
My point is why. WE HAVE NO TRUE SHOOTING GUARD! There were a few guys we could have taken to fill that spot and then worked for a PF through trades or free agency. Worst case scenario we don’t get anyone but how much better is our PF lineup now that Morris is a part of it. Do we really expect him to break out in the next 2 seasons? Have we just given up on Gani?? WHY???
by DJPitz on Jun 24, 2011 2:03 AM MST via mobile reply actions
There are 96 minutes a night
Between 4 and 5. If we play Frye 30 and Gortat 30, that leaves 36. That’s 18 apiece for Hak and Markieff.
An NBA team needs between 4 and 6 bigs, with 5 and 6 being deep bench players who end up playing only in garbage time or when rotation guys get injured, and are ideally guys that you hope to develop. We have Gorat, Frye, Markieff, Hak, Siler and Lawal. That is the required 6, with 5 and 6 upside guys we are taking a flyer on. Seems like we got that about right if you ask me.
To me all this pick does is confirm that the front office has no faith Lawal will ever be a decent PF for us, which is just an admission that we wasted our picks last year.
Second rounders rarely, if ever, make NBA rosters, let along contribute. Gani was drafted 46th overall. Here are all the 46th picks in NBA history. You have to go back to 1986 when we drafted a plucky young man named Jeff Hornacek to find a 46th pick who “made it”.
My point is why. WE HAVE NO TRUE SHOOTING GUARD!
And there is FA to come. Here is the list of FA 2s, and it shows a LOT of good quality in our price range (MLE and under). I’m going to call this pick solid, and wait and see what unfolds.
I still disagree on most points
Your statement about minutes works on paper, but it also is based on the assumption we drafted Morris to play back up center in the instance that we trade Lopez.
I was going off the belief that Morris was going to be played at PF. You can’t have Frye start at PF and play 2nd center, so at some point you have to play Morris at center. If we trade Lopez then your looking at a bench with Morris at center and Hak at PF if we don’t just decide to play Silo and switch between Morris and Hak at PF.
My main point was this. We already have the role playing PF market cornered and assuming we keep Lopez then what does Morris really bring to the table now? Could he be the great steal of the draft and become an all star? Sure but he could just as easily be a perennial bench player or fade into obscurity and now the Suns are left with no real SG. Yes there are options available on the market, but what if we get none. I feel like our options at PF are really we acquire a proven player or bust, we have enough stop gaps. However if we draft a real SG then we still have the option to get a veteran player to start and the rookies minutes are almost guaranteed.
All that being said you are probably right I do have to high of hopes for Gani as a second round pick.
by DJPitz on Jun 24, 2011 4:15 AM MST via mobile up reply actions
Hak is role player
but he is not filling the role we need. Our starting PFs both lack true rebounding and defensive skills. If you have a starter that is great at defense and rebounding then you can use a Warrick for pure offense. Or vice versa with defense and rebounding off the bench. We have no traditional 4’s. Well, we do now. Markieff can bang down low and pop out if necessary
by Suns Fan For Life on Jun 24, 2011 9:04 AM MST up reply actions
Number one, Lopez will be gone. You can take that to the bank.
Number two, barring other trades that shake it up, Frye is absolutely going to start at PF but also play a lot of center. When he’s out with Gortat, he’s the 4. When Morris comes in, Frye will slide to the 5.
Third, with any luck, Hak will be gone. One of the most “available” players in the league.
by BringBackBarkley17 on Jun 24, 2011 11:01 AM MST up reply actions
and positions are a bit of a misnomer
Of Frye and Morris, is Frye the 4 or 5? IF they are playing against Bass and Anderson from Orlando, who guards who? And does it matter? You need a 4/5 combo that can rebound, defend and score. Frye/Hak and Morris/Gortat – one of each works as a unit.

Ok. Just a little reality
Gani Lawal was teh 46th pick of the draft. How much hope can you realy put on him? How many 46th picks even last a 2 years in the league let alone make it as even a role player. At 46 you take someone with some potential but you can’t plan on anything. Plus he has defined skills. Numbers wise he was one of the best rebounders in the NCAA last year, he plays defense and he can hit the 3. So he has a similar skill to Frye plus the rebounding and defense.
by Suns Fan For Life on Jun 24, 2011 9:00 AM MST up reply actions
Dude, I agree to an extent, but you are dramatizing WAY too much. First of all, Gani Lawal was a second round pick. You don’t expect a second round pick to make your team, and you can’t be listed as “wasting a pick” if he never plays for you. The guy is okay, but he is never going to get serious minutes on our team or any other team that is not a complete doormat. Anyone and everyone should have known this from the day he was drafted.
Other than that, Frye is a solid starter. Not great, but solid. And Morris is going to be a very, very good and efficient 7th or 8th man for us that could eventually start. He will do the dirty work and things that we need. Lou Amundson everyone loved. This guy will be much, much better. There was no one better available at 13.
Other than that, I don’t think we’re done dealing this offseason, but even if we are, we will challenge for the last two playoff spots and have a good chance to snag one.

It was a safe pick in a lukewarm draft
There wasn’t much the Suns could screw up being as that this draft class domestically was weak. It wasn’t like they passed on a future franchise player.
I have to concur with others in liking the message the FO is making by at least taking seriously the need for better front court play. Morris is not going to be “the guy” like STAT was nor will he be the face of the franchise, or any for that matter. He’s going to be a role-player at best. But what the Morris pick has is predictability. What you see is what you get. He’s not going to score crucial buckets, but years down the line he’ll further polish his inside game and be a player you can build a contender with. And as a role player he has a set of skills that current Suns big men with the exception of Gortat and Frye have not shown.
He may not have a lot of upside, but we know he can and is ready to play in the NBA.
I want JRICH back!!! Can we start a JRICH RESCUE CAMPAIGN to bring that man home?
What will it take exactly? I know the new CBA will probably determine that but hey we need something to talk about these next few months, right??
Why would J-Rich come back and play for a team that is the definition of mediocrity when I'm sure there will be more than a few contenders knocking at his door?
Also, It’s probably going to take at least a 4 year deal to nab J-Rich and I’m sorry but I don’t want a 34 year old J-Rich on our squad.
There are some younger (mostly RFAs) out there that I’d rather pursue before J-Rich.

I'm cool with that personally
Shooters and tall players are the last to fade. A 34 year old JRich – provided his contract was reasonable, could still be a player if all he could do is knock down the three.
But ignoring that, your assumption is JRich gets a 4-5 year deal. At what point is he worth it? 4 years at the Full MLE, assuming it still exists, with the 4th year partially guaranteed (ala VC’s contract this year) would be a MASSIVE asset.
The devil is in the detail, and getting JRich for 2-3 years @ close to 5 mil would be fine.

And another thing I really like about him is that he has the versatility to play with every other big in the rotation. He has the range the play with Gortat and the rebounding and defense to play with Frye and Warrick (against small frontcourts).

Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

I like Markieff a bit more than those guys, actually.
He might not be as good, but he seems like a tougher inside presence with good floor leadership, which is what our bench needs right now. If he progresses into a starter, even better. But right now, his defense/rebounding will help shore up a lot of concerns with our bench unit.
