Bad News For Phoenix Suns! The 2011-2012 NBA Season Might Be A 'Go'

2011-2012 season would be deja vu, all over again. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

As many of you have heard by now, there is growing optimism about a full NBA schedule this year. Ken Berger is reading unsaid words and facial expressions like a profiler. Chris Sheridan is citing unnamed sources. And then there's the phantom tweet from Roger Mason Jr, player rep for the Knicks, that was later deleted: "looking like a season".

My reaction? Depression.

As I read through the optimistic articles last night and this morning, instead of getting excited my heart sunk lower and lower into my chest.

I can see the frustration of a frenzied free agency period during which the Suns front office looks forlornly at its empty wallets and just watches along with me on the sideline. And I don't really want to watch a dozen teams around the NBA get better and another dozen to keep their hold on 50-win seasons and high playoff hopes, while the Suns struggle to beat the Clippers. And I'm not looking forward to watching Steve Nash deteriorate before my eyes over the course of an 82-game schedule again.

The 2011-2012 promises to play out nearly exactly like the last season. In fact, there's a greater chance of regression than progression. Nearly the entire 40-win roster is signed through at least next season, and there's no money for free agents. Couple that with your best trade chips being Mikeal Pietrus and Robin Lopez, you're in trouble. Big trouble.

Star-divide

Sorry to be the gloom and doom here, but every day that goes by without basketball is a day that further crystallizes the notion that it's time to start over.

You simply don't build a team with a foundation of aging stars and middling role players.

My depression began 3 days ago, when role-player-extraordinaire Jared Dudley said he was trying to recruit Channing Frye, Josh Childress and Aaron Brooks to play on his impact basketball team this September. Why a bunch of role players, Jared? Why not recruit an idle Suns star or two to join him?

Then I realized - there are no idle Suns stars to recruit! Let's run through the roster. Pietrus and Marcin Gortat are overseas. Vince Carter, Grant Hill and Steve Nash are too old to run with the younger pups. Markieff Morris is an unsigned rookie. Gani Lawal and Garrett Siler just aren't good enough. And Robin Lopez... well, that's an interesting name but who the hell knows? Maybe he's in Disneyland. Not one of those guys is an all-star talent*.

*note: Gortat may make an all-star game or two, but he's not a perennial all-star talent.

*note #2: Before anyone whimpers over the loss of "all-star talent" Goran Dragic, he's not even the best guy named Dragic on his national team anymore... go Zoran!

The impact basketball "league" will be flush with in-their-prime, veteran NBA players and up-and-coming kids. The best the Suns can possibly offer are Dudley, Childress, Brooks and Frye, otherwise known as the 6th-9th best guys on a contender. Ugh. Maybe Duds can recruit an all-star talent from another NBA team to be their fifth-wheel. But then again, if they're trying to prep for the Suns' 2011-2012 season, playing with a true all-star might be counter-productive.

As mentioned earlier, the Suns' roster is set pretty well in stone for this upcoming season unless Lon Babby can turn his trash (Lopez, Pietrus, minor FA money) into treasure (a new 2-guard). But even then, the rotation of last year's 40-win team will be largely the same at 4 of 5 positions.

Best case: 75-year old Nash/Hill combo survives 82 NBA games, rookie Markieff Morris plays like Horace Grant, Babby gets a fringe all-star to play 2-guard... and the Suns win 45 games, taking the 7th seed.

Worst case: Nash goes down at some point, Hill goes down at some point, Jason Richardson signs but disappoints, Morris plays like a rookie backup... and the Suns win an agonizing 35 games. Just good enough for a crappy lottery pick.

Yayyyy, 2011-2012 season... (sniffle)

I think that being type-casted as a doom merchant

is an egregious mischaracterization of my perpetually mirthful and sunny disposition.

I portend that missing the season would diminish the Suns ability to position themselves to be a player next summer. Their actions should be predicated upon events yet to unfold. The season should provide insight and opportunity. Do I think the Suns will be good next season? No. Do I think the process of the season and making prudent decisions as events unfurl are vital to the success of the franchise in the near future? Yes.

Last year was a difficult pill to swallow. A vital piece of the team’s infrastructure was exscinded/absquatulated (depending on one’s vantage) and a competitive, entertaining, exciting team was reduced to rubble. There shouldn’t be a similarly precipitous plummet this year unless the team bounces after hitting the bottom. I am comfortable with being somewhat numbed in advance to the proposition of another season of underwhelming returns.

The overall good of an NBA season far outweighs the negative connotations associated with the Suns probable futility.

Alex, I've been reading you for about a year and a half now.

And this is undoubtedly the most pessimistic thing I’ve ever seen you publish. I didn’t think you had it in you. Which makes this all the more powerful. Damn.

However, my new Golden State of Mind friends seem to think that this year is a great time to tank since next year’s draft will be stacked. Maybe the Suns will suck so bad that we’ll end up with a great pick and our next savior. Either way, NBA basketball is better than no NBA basketball, even if the Suns are thoroughly screwed.

I still think my “worst case” really is the worst possible thing that could happen AND the most likely at the same time. I’d prefer a terrible team over a 35-40 win team, mainly for the higher draft pick in a stacked draft.

Absolutely.

I want to see as much of Steve Nash as I can while he still has time left.

And it is possible that we regress. But I don’t think so unless Steve really does break down, and worse than last year. The team went through so much last year, and still ended up with 40 wins. A full season of Gortat plus some improvement from some of the young guys is better than a sucky Dragic, Earl Barron, and big minutes form Robin Lopez..

then have the season go down the tubes and watch Nash leave as a FA in 2012 to play in NY or Toronto or wherever.

There are plenty of teams that will fall off so I expect Suns to have a good shot at the playoffs if there is a season.

by Ben Tang on Sep 8, 2011 7:32 PM MST reply actions

take the bad with good

With rare exceptions, the Suns have never been a “blow it up and start from scratch” franchise when the team has fallen from playoff contention. Because of this, you don’t often get miserable years when the Suns play like a D-league team; they usually maintain enough talent to be reasonably entertaining and competitive, even if no one expects them to make a playoff run. At this point, though, I’d welcome an era in which we put together a young, talented core and suffered through a lot of losses, knowing that we had a bright future.

At least the Mercury are winning

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

I can get different satisfaction from basketball even when the Suns are bad.

This forum still promises to be a delightful diversion even if the Suns play is at sometimes painful. The Suns season will still most likely be interesting (maybe more train wreck interesting than I’d prefer) with unexpected improvement, plans to blow it up, major trades, farewells to beloved aging veterans, growth from cagey little role players, the ascension of the great Marcin, etc. Who knows what direction things will go?

One thing I did notice about last year was that I watched more playoff basketball than just about any other year I can remember. Usually I’m so myopically focused on the Suns that I gravitate towards their games and concentrate on their storylines. Then, once they are annually eliminated, I’m so crushed that I can’t bring myself to watch any more games (often because the team that just mopped the floor with the Suns is going in for ring sizing). Without a horse in the race this year I was able to watch with a little bit more detachment and I found that I actually quite enjoyed watching playoff basketball under these parameters.

I guess sometimes my fanaticism actually inhibits my ability to enjoy basketball. There’s a positive and a negative to being emotionally invested.

That’s a good way to think about it. If Frye, Dudley and Gortat keep improving and Nash retires, we could have some good trade bait that could land us a franchise player (see Denver/Knicks trade) or at least an all-star or a couple 1st round picks. I mean what would be the point of keeping those guys if Nash isn’t around? As soon as he’s gone, we have no option, but to rebuild. It’s kind of exciting actually.

I guess sometimes my fanaticism actually inhibits my ability to enjoy basketball. There’s a positive and a negative to being emotionally invested.

Blind devotion
For me it’s just not as fun to watch other games. It used to be though, before I had found my team.

Getting caught up in a whirlwind of emotion with unrealistic hopes of a championship run is a little bit different than cheering for a 40 win team. I get more invested and involved. Maybe my commitment level is lacking, but losing a playoff game to the Lakers on an Artest tip in stings a little more than loss 42 in a relatively nondescript campaign.

Last year I did have more fun watching other basketball games besides the Suns. Especially in the playoffs when there were no Suns games. Same dynamic in other sports. I had more fun watching NFL playoff games than I did watching the Cardinals muck their way through a 5-11 season.

Just because I like an actor/director doesn’t mean he can’t put out a stinker of a movie. Just because the Suns are my favorite team doesn’t mean they didn’t have a noisome season.

I don't think Landry will be overpaid.

I’m pretty sure teams know he’s not going to get much better. He’ll get something of a mid-level exception, whatever that would be when the lockout ends. I don’t see much interest in him anyway.

Afflalo is the guy who will be overpaid. I have a hard time seeing Denver letting him go.

Well, nothing is really new here but wait a sec...

I´m not the most optimistic guy around here, not at all, but aren´t we brightsiders ? even if we get the exactly same team we had at the end of last season, and i´m sure we´ll get a few more wins and still have fun.

Now let me remind you we are in the edge of glory here, we could actually try our best for 1superstars or 2 good players or tank. I guess our FO is going to try as hard as VC errr Nash to get a bright shinny SG and maybe a PF, if they fail and by the 20 first game of the season we suck hard, they will tank, no doubt about it.

I´m pretty sure we are just 1 really good player away from being a serious contender and 2 good players from being a 4th seed.

Which are our mains flaws ? SG and PF position, in that order.

Jason Richardson, is my ideal SG, for phoenix of course, i know along with him and our Stoudemireless roster isn´t enough, but that sure brings a lot of offensive relief to Nash and the others.

PF position is really complicated at this time because we have 4 of those, and 3 of them haven´t prove a thing, but we can really make it work if Young Rookie step up his game, let me guys remind you this twins were consider NBA READY LEVEL , there is no reason to believe he would fail and pull a Clarcked.

Then again we have some trade chips, VC expiring contract, Pietrus, Lopez and i can see lot of teams interested in Gortat.

If we were to tank, i won´t be around as much as i used to be last season, but no matter what i´ll be a sun forever, if Nash shut up and walked it off till the end, the lesser thing i can do is to show the Phoenix Suns some eternal love.

If you really didn´t care about all the written above, try rosterbation, is like sex without childrens or see the list of things that will get better:

-New Brand Rookie PF
-J Chilly showing us what he can really do
-Pudgemonster being rewarded with the MIP
-Dudz and ICMF still improving, something must players their age don´t
-Grant Hill and his weird sexy stare
-Steve Nash would prove age is just a number
-Gortat improving
-Brooks being MIP of 09
-Some cool love/hate trade before season begins
-Some cool FA sign love/hate before seasons begins.

All of this……..and more……if there is a season…

Do not let Steve Nash and Grant Hill go away, please.
Otherwhise im not buying any tickets from you Saver.

Lol. Nice post. I didn’t understand some of it at first. Like I was thinking why do we want a SG with huge shins? Then I was thinking, sex without children? What are you, a pedophile? Then I realized you meant making a baby. Then I was like what’s wrong with the brands of our PF? They need to wear Nike or something? But then I realized you meant brand new. Now I got it! Good stuff.

is JRich really the best the Suns could do. Sure he brings in 18 or so and yeah he knows Nasha nd the system and what not, but I think the Suns need to find a diamond in the rough not unlike Joe Johnson. That was an under the radar pick up. If Treloar and the other suits are worth their meddle, they’ll find someone young, cheap, and talented. Maybe a year or two to develop, but eventually a quality guy.

We’re also assuming Brooks gets signed. I think it probable but not guaranteed. And if that kid can take minutes away from Nash and keep him healthy (assumes he plays well), then maybe the doom and gloom isn’t so guaranteed.

I agree

We got to get younger.

What do you think about OJ Mayo? We might actually have a shot at him. It’s a risk with his whole steroid incident, but again something like that is probably the only reason we’d have a shot at him.

I’d offer Pietrus, Lopez, a 2nd round pick and Morris if they ask for more. I don’t think it would take much to get him and this offer is at least good enough to keep them from hanging up the phone.

If this team wants to get young and more talented fast without giving anyone important up, then they’ve got to take the risk on these players like Beasley and Mayo.

Don't trade Dudley!

Well, they've only been on bad teams.

I’d be willing to take a risk on Mayo. I mean what do we have to lose? Pietrus, Lopez and a 2nd round pick maybe? If he plays well, we resign him, if he doesn’t he’s on an expiring contract and so we could easily trade him half way through the season or let him go.

Don't trade Dudley!

by Beavis 25 on Sep 9, 2011 11:06 AM MST up reply actions

I definitely would too, depending on price. I’d do Pietrus/Lopez, but I wouldn’t throw in Morris or anything more than a 2nd rounder.

by BringBackBarkley17 on Sep 9, 2011 4:32 PM MST up reply actions

I think Memphis would do this

Lopez would give them another big body with lots of upside still and Pietrus gives them a veteran with post season experience. Plus, Mayo is expandable for them I think. Throwing in Morris would certainly be way too much to give up on our part though.

by Chris_Coffel on Sep 9, 2011 4:40 PM MST up reply actions

The contracts of Pietrus and Mayo almost exactly matchup.

Peaches would be a good fit there and he could play both SG and SF positions for them. Lopez is included because I don’t think he feels wanted here anymore and the Grizz could use a big.

All 3 players are on expiring contracts, so it’s actually a very small deal. The main purpose of this trade is to give these players a change of scenery. Mayo isn’t working in Memphis anymore and Lopez and Pietrus aren’t working here. Makes sense for both teams.

I wouldn’t be surprised if our FO had looked into this or plans to when the lockout ends. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t want Mayo considering their reputation to get only “clean” guys. It’s even possible this could be the deal that Pietrus said he was surprised they turned down.

But, I have something else to say. I think that the Suns and Clips will have fierce battles this year. Sure, the Fakers are going to win the Pac Div(FYI, Pac Div is one great hip hop group) but I think 2nd place can be won by any team. Every team in our division has a lot of talent. The Kings with DeMarcus Cousins and Tyreke Evans, the Warriors with Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis, the Clippers with Eric Gordon and Blake Griffin, and The Suns with Marcin Gortat and Aaron Brooks. It’s time for the Lakers to take a backseat because the rest of the Pac Div is coming up.

hey there’s always hope. But the most likely outcome is worse than last season, in terms of wins.

Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun

by Alex Laugan on Sep 9, 2011 11:01 AM MST up reply actions

I'm thinking we win about 40-45 games if the season starts on time.

More time to learn the system should help guys like Brooks and Pietrus. I’m expecting improvements out of Gortat, Frye, Dudley and Chill, but a slight decline in Steve Nash. I expect much of the same from Grant Hill. It will be very interesting to see how Lopez rebounds from his sucky season. He kind of has to start playing better or he won’t be in the league much longer. He’s on the last year of his contract I believe. Even if all that works out, Nash is still going to break down at some point and that’s why Brook’s success is going to be so important for our team.

So, I don’t think it’ll be worse. Last year I was expecting a playoff appearance and about 46-50 wins, so it was really hard when we didn’t achieve that. Going into the season with more realistic expectations should keep me from being let down.

Don't trade Dudley!

It makes me wonder if they plan on trading him or if they’ve already agreed to a deal, but are waiting for the end of the lockout to execute it?

The reason for this speculation is that Gentry or Sarver said there was more to come after they had drafted Morris, but nothing happened. I wonder if they tried and failed or actually made a deal, but the other team wanted to wait and see how the CBA negotiations went before agreeing?

It’s likely that I’m just being hopeful, but these kind of things do happen. For example, last summer it had been said that Kerr had agreed to do the Hedo/Barbs trade weeks before it actually happened and that the trade was to help convince Amar’e to return. Although, Kerr left before Amar’e turned down the offer and Sarver still did the deal which kind of surprised me. It’s also weird that Turk’s agent became Kerr’s replacement. There’s just so much we don’t know that goes on behind those doors.

Trade Frye!

you guys keep saying the suns need a new star shooting guard, really though the suns will prob be a great offensive team regardless if they get one or not. The suns problem is defense, you know a weak front court. Warrick, Lopez, and even channing frye did terrible on defense last season. How come nobody considers trading channing frye. sorry I know everyone likes this guy a lot, but we need a better power forward as a starter, cuz he’s a terrible defender. if we could package him in a trade that doesn’t involve nash, or gortat, and hopefully not dudley, to get them a great PF to start along with gortat that would be great.

by JLG33134 on Sep 9, 2011 4:54 PM MST reply actions

Trading Frye won’t get you anyone better than Frye. Frye may be the second most imporant offensive player in this system. He’s not a great rebounder or defender, although I dont think he was terrible last season, but he does spread the floor and isn’t afraid to take big shots. Plus he’s contract is actually pretty good.

Getting rid of Frye really makes more sense if you’re moving Nash and starting all over.

by Chris_Coffel on Sep 9, 2011 5:14 PM MST up reply actions

Good response.

And Frye was actually pretty decent on defense for much of last year. He’s certainly not Kevin Garnett, but he’s not Hakim Warrick either.

And to just rely on our offense being good regardless of what happens is foolish. Frye is one of the most important players on the team, so much so that his services are need for both the first and second units.

Nope

I just believe that our biggest need like Gentry said, is a guy who can get to the line and score without Nash. There were about 14 games we could have won, but lost in the waning minutes of the 4rth quarter because we couldn’t get to the line. Also, without having a guy who can create his own shot our offense goes stagnant and we can easily be shutdown.

All we have is a passing PG and a bunch of role players. None of them are scorers. Nash used to be capable of that, but not anymore. We need a go to guy and I don’t really care anymore if he’s a SG or PF.

I don’t think Pietrus or Lopez are “good trade chips.” I think they’re garbage, lol.

yeah 4th qtr scoring was bad for some games but only some. interior D was the real consistent problem in every game. there’s not one team in the nba that didn’t had some games where they couldn’t score in the 4th, that happens sometimes, ask the heat. anyways i’m confident that the suns will make it to the playoffs again. I know alot of people are bitter about the 40 win season, but the nash era ain’t over he’s gonna get to the playoffs again.GO SUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to say it, but I'm going to enjoy this season

I like watching a number of these guys play, and a lot of them are capable of having great games. Gortat and Nash will connect, Frye can really be good if he puts his mind to it (watch him drive and dunk when he’s feeling the groove), Dudz can pull some Bird-like stuff out of his hat, Hill is hill – still running like a gazelle when his bones let him, and Warrick went off occasionally. Not only that, but Frye, Dudley, Hill and Gortat can play defence when they’re fired up.

I’m getting my beer fridge stocked and my suns gear on. Dammit, this team is so much more likeable and potentially fun than a lot of other squads out there. I’m excited, so down with pessimism!

No more messin' around - time to rise from the ashes!

I actually hate it when Warrick occasionally goes off

Because it reminds me of a man named Amar’e Stoudemire who would do that almost all the time.

Ok, I might like it a little bit.

It is fun to watch him dunk and when he’s doing that a lot, it’s cool, but just reminds me of what we used to have.

The Phoenix Suns are a perfect example of.

It’s better to never contend at all than to contend every year, get this close and then have your heart broken because of a terrible twist of fate.

Great piece Alex

A couple of thoughts:

1) Well, with the one thing about the lockout ending is that I won’t be so damn bored. No nba news has driven me crazy and I had to find something else to get interested in.

2) The thing that really pissed me off about the lockout was that we were given no opportunity to improve our team because there was no free agent period over the summer. So when the season starts, we’re left with the same mediocre team (obviously it’s best to do transactions NOT during the season). And this sucks. Because I was really hoping that we could get an all-star or at least someone all-star talent (may Josh Smith? Longshot, but I was hoping).

3) Steve Nash will always be an all-star to me. I don’t think enough people realize what he does for us, or just how incredible he is. Think about it from another fan’s perspective: if you take away Nash, our top five players are Gortat, Hill, Frye, Dudley, and Carter (remember; from another fan’s perspective). That means that every player we have after that is worse than those five. So do you think that team, right there, without Nash, is a top 10 offense? Top 5 in scoring? No way in hell. No way. But we were. We were ninth in offensive efficiency, and fourth in scoring with Nash. And the guy had a bad back and a divorce crisis going on this year. On top of that, he led the league in assists, shot nearly 50-40-90, and also averaged 15 points per game.
^^ This is what I say to people who say that Nash is washed up or overrated. Best offensive point guard in the league.

I am semi-optimistic for the season. But I really think that the lockout has hurt our team especially, because we needed a free agent who would give us a little more firepower.

Well, all this lockout means is that Steve Nash can rest up, so I'm fine with it. It better not cut into the season though.

Nash is really great when healthy. It just hurt me a lot to watch him drag his body up and down the court the last 3-4 months of last season. Pubic shearing. ugh.

That was one of the worst things for me to watch.

He always starts out playing like an MVP for the first 30-40 games, but then begins to breakdown. There were about 10-15 games he should have sit out last year, but didn’t because he wanted to give his team a shot. He’s a good leader, he just can’t do it himself.

yeah

it did look painful. but it also makes it all the more incredible what he did. i think he rested this summer and should score more this year

That worst case scenario isn't even close

Worst case is Grant doesn’t re-sign, Steve is injured early and plays through it at half-effectiveness all season, Channing regresses, Morris washes out, Gentry leaves Childress on the bench all year, Dudley leads the team in scoring, and we get the worst lottery pick next year without making the playoffs.

THAT’S a worst case scenario.

Voted most likely to say "I told you so"

by jc79 on Sep 11, 2011 12:08 AM MST reply actions

umm, your worst and my worst are almost exactly the same. In both of our scenarios, Hill and Nash are ineffective (where in yours, Hill isn’t here at all) and the team ends up with a bad lottery pick.

Well, it pains me to see my friends sink to this depth of despair with no good reason.

It’s still the Suns. It’s still Steve Nash and Grant Hill – two of the greatest superstars to ever play the game, not to mention the smartest players in the game. The Suns will follow the dismal season of last year with a turnaround season – much as the D’backs have. It’s gonna be a blast.
Time enough to be miserable if it’s warranted once the season starts. Right now, anything is possible. Maybe y’all should just go light Vince Carter on fire – that’ll make everyone feel better. When Ray and Jim are the optimists – well, the universe is badly out of balance.

Life is good!

We'll make the playoffs over Denver.

Half their team are free agents and they won’t be able to get them all back.

by Beavis 25 on Sep 14, 2011 8:56 AM MST up reply actions

Heya, Beavis,

That may well be true, but what the Suns really have to worry about is themselves and how they play. Early last year, we were competitive – even with the massive roster shake-up. We came close to winning a lot of games that we probably shouldn’t, and lost a lot of games we should have won. It wasn’t talent (or the lack of talent) in most of the cases, but confusion over roles that was the culprit (IMHO). No matter what happens this year as far as trades, moves, roster positions, etc., I expect well defined roles and a more balanced attack. I don’t share the pessimism here – all these guys – including Lopez, Pietrus, and Warrick – played well in a defined role, and if anyone – anyone at all- steps up, the rest of the guys will perform better. So I’m just looking for us to play as well as we’re capable, and let the rest of the stuff take care of itself.
I want all 82 games. I don’t want any asterisks next to our title.

Well, I expect Nash to start out playing like an MVP...as he usually does.

But! We all know he’ll breakdown at some point and that’s why I believe our season depends on the success of Brooks as a Phoenix Sun. I doubt we would have made the playoffs a couple years ago if it wasn’t for Dragic.

So I’m just looking for us to play as well as we’re capable, and let the rest of the stuff take care of itself.

I think they’re capable of a bit more than what they put out last season. I don’t expect them to be a contender or win 50 games, but I’m not expecting the end of the world either. At the worst I expect them to do just as well as they did last season, but lets be real; it’s very rare the Phoenix Suns miss the playoffs two years in a row.

Don't trade Dudley!
