T'Wolves and Suns Fan...Who says no?

Normally don't engage in fake trade speculation, but it's kinda rare when you find a deal that works for all parties. I grew up in PHX and lived in 'Sota for a long time. I love both the Suns and the Wolves, and think there is a deal that helps both teams. Marcin Gortat and Jared Dudley for Derrick Williams and Michael Beasley,

The Wolves get a desperately needed 2 and 5. The Suns get a local hero ( who looks really freaking good so far, by the way) and a volume scorer they need. This has win / win written all over it. What does BSOS say?

Yes and No

Dudley is the only reliable SG we have, so we can’t really afford to trade him away without getting a good replacement back.

Just make it Marcin Gortat for Derrick Williams and you have a deal. Originally, I was against this trade last summer when the rumors were swriling around, but things change. I love Marcin, he’s hurt right now (Broken Thumb) , but he’s a good center with the potential to maybe be a 1 or 2 time all-star. I didn’t want to trade him because he was still a new toy and a shiny, cool one too, but I recently came to the realization that our team is in need of young talent very badly and Marcin Gortat just might be our best and only tradeable piece that can get it. Plus, he’s 27. I don’t like the idea of building around guys who are already in their prime. Also, it may have had something to do with the lockout, Derrick being an unknown and Lopez being a hopeless case. I don’t think we could have afforded to make that trade then, however we can now.

Don't trade Dudley!

See your point...

I think Williams for Gortat would work. Rubio really is Nash v 2.0, and I’d love to see some experience around him, while the Suns get younger.

Actually....

Ricky Rubio has been pretty impressive shooting the ball so far this year. He’s shooting 60% from 3pt land (1.0M-1.7A) and 52% from FG (3.3M-6.3A).

I’m not at all comparing him to Steve Nash but just giving the dude a little credit where credit is due.

He’s got a good basketball frame on him standing at 6’4. He’s only 21 so maybe there is sometime to add a few lbs on his frame without losing any speed so he could become a defensive presence as well.

How about "can't shoot like Nash?"

The combination of Nash being both one of the nest shooters and passers of all time is what makes him so special.

This is interesting. Suns have to get younger. I do believe I was for this trade last summer, when it was posed by Scott Howard.

I don’t like the Beasley/Dudley part though. Doesn’t Minny have a young 2-guard? Wesley something?

Have I run into you at CH?

Anyway, I know you need a SG badly, but we can’t afford to give Dudley up without a replacement like Beav said. It would have to be a 3-team deal, since we both know you don’t have a SG worth acquiring.

And how do your fellow fans feel about giving up Beasley AND Williams? Shouldn’t you hold onto one of them?

Quite possibly...

I’m there often. Even though I went to HS in AZ, I’m pretty much an MN guy. Grew up there.

Think most CH’ers would be in favor of Gortat / Dudley for Williams / Beasley. Beas is just a bad fit with what we have now. Dude needs to play the play the 4 to be effective, and we have this guy named Kevin Love.

ummm

If we were rebuilding gortat for williams would be an awesome idea. Maybe someone we could swing for cousins since he likely will be on the trading block. The best teams that have the veterans to straiten him out would be phoenix or the celtics.

Technically we just picked up Michael redd so he could replace a bit of Dudly’s time. I don’t see why Minnesota would give up both starting quality players at one position though.

As a Suns fan...

You ARE rebuilding. Assface Sarver may not know it yet, but it’s happening. Getting DWill, Mike Beasley, and Wes Johnson for Gortat and Dudley helps the Suns get younger and more athletic, and helps the Wolves with experience in areas of need.

then just throw in some extra guys to make the contracts work.
that way SAC gets a quality young center to grow, Minny gets it young big man and we get our young future hometown scorer

I saw one game agaisnt OKC where in the 4th quarter he feel like a superstar and jack up shots that only Pietrus would have shot…missing all of them and losing.

As Suns fan my biggest preocupation is the lack of back up PG with potential to be a starter, now i don´t want to get dirty, but don´t you have a Rubio guy available for Dudley/Gortat or Nash/Childress?

Alright

Rubio has looked good in his few games so far, but lets hold off on the how awesome Rubio is talks until we see him consistantly produce at this level. The guy averaged 6 and 4 in europe, and has a double double machine and a bunch of scorers inflating his production. One thing i do like is his size and defense in the passing lanes. But right now there are alot of PGs i would take over Rubio. Thats all….

Exactly the point I tried to make in the first place.

But Beas is not highly regarded for the most part at Canis Hoopus. He hasn’t gotten any better and he’s doing the same things he always has. Sure, he’s a talented player and can really go off when he feels it, but I don’t really want him on my team. I was originally at least somewhat in favor of bringing in Beasley when we discussed it over the summer, but I’ve changed my mind. The RFA thing would make it more palatable though.

Beasley

Has been awful this year compared to an average SF and wasn’t much better last year (all stats are per 48 minutes).

Beasley’s shooting percentages are poor, he doesn’t rebound well (for a 4, although he is good for a three), turns it over at a high rate and fouls too often. Add in that he is a poor defender and you have a guy whose production is atrocious – team killer bad. The only things Beasley is above average at this year are total points and rebounding (assumming he plays 100% at SF and not PF) – and it is NOT good to be above average in total points when you shoot so poorly.

Beasley has talent, but at this point I’d only take a cheap (read less than Hak makes) punt on him, given how little he has produced so far in his career, and there is little chance he ever turns it around IMHO.

by MMotherwell on Jan 7, 2012 10:43 PM MST up reply actions

What's funny is there is this idiot MIami fan on another message board

that is convinced Beasley is a great player and Kevin Love is completely overrated and cares more about stats than helping his team. Beasley is a lockdown defender in his eyes. while Love might be the worst defender in the league. It’s really quite pathetic. And somehow this guy became a featured columnist on BR. SMH…

I don't think it's fair judging guy's performance this early into a season which had no pre-season, little training camp, and a condensed schedule.

Beasley is still only 22 and has played on teams with slow, half court offenses without a talented facilitator.

In Phoenix he would have a free-flowing, wide open defense and a set up guy to get him the ball in the best spots. He would be an excellent pick and roll partner for Nash which would cut back on his bad shot selection. Plus, being able to learn from three of the classiest veterans in the game in Nash, Hill, and now Michael Redd is exactly what Beasley needs.

Would I give up all of our trade assets to acquire him? No. But, if Minnesota wasn’t seeking a huge return then I would certainly take a chance on the guy. It’s not often that a super athletic, 6 for 10 235 pounder 22 year old who can do it all offensively is on the trade market for cheap.

by miketheboss on Jan 3, 2012 4:44 PM MST reply actions

This is certainly music to my ears

I was pushing for this so hard last year, Gortat for Williams, even signed myself up just so I could pitch the idea

I don’t think we need both Williams and Beasley, but rather a potential starting caliber PG for Dudley… perhaps a 3-team deal is in the work?

I had a weird dream last night that prompted me to come in today: I dreamed that Goran Dragic was playing against the Suns and he was averaging triple-double and I was thinking to myself “we shouldn’t have trade that kid away”"

by Ben Tang on Jan 4, 2012 3:29 PM MST reply actions

I'd rather do Morris+Lopez for Williams.

I’d still of course trade Gortat for Williams straight up but I would much rather prefer to keep Gortat since D-Will and the Polish Hammer gives us a solid core for the next 4-5 years. Plus, Williams prefers to play out of the four which works out well on the offensive end but will really hurt us on the defensive end. D-Will is only 6’8 248 so even with all of his explosive athleticism he will still be giving up a lot of weight and length to the star PF’s of the west like Gasol, Aldridge, Griffin, and Jefferson.

I have to wonder though….Why the hell would Minnesota even want to trade Williams? Beasley is a free agent at years end and he is more than expendable to the Wolves with the logjam they have at the 3 and 4 spots. Minnesota could easily trade Beasley or let him walk, have D-Will play the four three next year. Also, the departure of Beasley will free up some minutes for Anthony Randolph.

Totally wouldn’t mind getting either Barea or Luke Ridnour to be our back up PG, either.

D-Will could play both positions successfully.

Although, the more I think about it the more he resembles the elite SF’s of the league. He can use his strength to his advantage to back down smaller guys and draw a lot of fouls. However, he also has NBA 3-pt range as well.

His style of play really reminds me of Paul Pierce or a rough-around-the-edges Melo, and especially Gerald Wallace….Except bigger and stronger but without the tenacious perimeter D.

He's going to be matchup nightmare TBQH

He has the faceup game of a swingman and can go down in the post against any big man you throw at him. And he’s about as athletic as you can get without going into straight-up ridiculous territory (aka. LeBron James).

With Love hanging out at the 3pt line, he has free reign to do whatever he wants in the post, I don’t think he’ll have any problems against any SF in the game right now. He’s long, big and athletic enough to give the likes of Durant and LeBron a hell of aheadache on D. Not just slow them down, literally make them go 5 for 23 or something equally pitful. Wolves have themselves a definite keeper. That kid, with Love’s and Rubio’s help will elevate the Wolves into heights Minnesota hasn’t seen since Minneapolis Lakers moved to LA.

Look out for him in the next Wolves game when he’s gonna start in place of Beasley, I smell a break-out.

The funny thing is, Love plays even better at C!

There’s a nice post on Canis Hoopus breaking down his stats at C versus his stats at PF from last year. It’s pretty crazy, but he seems to score more and rebound even more (like that’s even possible?) when playing at the center spot.

From Canis Hoopus:
Basiically, if you gave all of Beasley’s minutes to Williams, the Wolves could easily have won 4-5 games by now. No, I’m not joking. Beasley is truly earth-shatteringly bad. To put in perspective what a selfish chucker Beasley is, he ranks 8th among small forwards the NBA in FGA per 48 minutes (50 minutes minimum), but fifty-first in true shooting. No, not 51st in the NBA, 51st among small forwards. That means that essentially all of the starting SFs and two-thirds of the back-up SFs in the league are shooting better than he is, but he’s shooting 22 shots per 48. And I don’t keep stats for “contested 22-footers per 48” but having watched every Timberwolves game I’m going to guess he leads the league by a fat margin, ahead of even Kobe (I’m guessing that’s the reason that he’s 25th among small forwards at getting to the line, despite all those shots). Oh, yeah, and he turns the ball over a shitton. In short, Beasley is the very definition of a player that shoots you out of games. Every single time they choose to iso Beasley instead of just letting Ridnour or Rubio create off the dribble / pick-n-roll, a Timberwolf pup dies in the wild.

Williams is as turnover prone as Beasley, but I can chalk Williams’ TOs up to rookie mistakes and a general rookie “over-eager” attitude, which he may learn from. Most of his TOs come from ill-advised passes. Beasley, however, is a third-year player; the vast majority of his turnovers come from him trying to “create a shot” (a phrase that I guarantee I’ll be ranting about in a future article) and I don’t expect him to change anytime soon.
