Michael Redd Could Start For Phoenix Suns; Grant Hill's Minutes To Drop
The Phoenix Suns and their fans will get a first look at shooting guard Michael Redd on Thursday night when the Suns host the Cleveland Cavaliers (game preview). Redd will likely play early in the game and according to head coach Alvin Gentry, could eventually start for the Suns.
"We'll stick him in and see what's going to happen. Obviously it's going to be something that he builds up. He's not going to come in and play 25-30 minutes tonight," Gentry said. "There's always a place if you can create your own shot on a team."
There's been speculation and some assumption that Redd's minutes would come at the expense of shooting guard Shannon Brown. Gentry said, however, that it's veteran Grant Hill who will have his minutes cut.

"To me, Grant Hill is playing too many minutes," Gentry said. "We've got to try to find some relief for him in some way. I think it does take away from his offensive game when he has to work so hard defensively and he's out there for 34 minutes."Hill is averaging 27 minutes per game but played 33 against the Lakers on Tuesday.

Depth
With Redd finally able to began working his way back up this added depth can only be an added bonus. It’s not the logjam we had last year in any means. I believe the 1st and 2nd unit lineups could be changed around some. Frye and JD should move back to the bench (still play 27-28+ a night) and have Keef start at the 4. If Redd comes back and can be a 30 minute guy again with time then being able to have dudz and Frye on the 2nd unit would add a little more scoring punch to the bench. A lot depends on what Redd is able to do with more minutes. A Nash, Redd, Hill, Morris, and Gortat starting lineup would be very respectable. Then follow up the 2nd unit with Price, Brown, Dudz, Frye, and Rolo. Of course a lot would depend on the specific match ups. In a nut shell all I’m saying is that we are a very deep team and the resurgence of Redd could pay dividends for us.
Exactly
I agree that’s why I said things like “working his way back up” and “in time”, It’s all a wait and see. Either way Redd is a very low risk high reward opportunity. We are talking about a guy that has been a 20+ ppg guy most of his career. I don’t see him returning to that caliber but if this magical training staff can do to him what they have done to others (Hill, Shaq, and even Nash) then he may play better than a lot expect.
I preferA
Price and Redd tandem, and a Dudley and Nash tandem – better offence and defense mix.
minutes per game
No doubt this year will be about managing minutes played. This shuold be obvious torwards the end of the season. I was glancing at some teams not much deeper than 4-5 guys (Clippers & NY), where their starters are ageraging 35 – 37 minutes a game, already. No way they can keep this up. Looks like all the ‘role players’ for the Suns has some advantage.
I have to see it to believe it.
“it” being that he can still hit a shot, run up and down the floor for 25 minutes, and not be a huge liability defensively.
Crashing the [message] boards from the swamps of Louisiana, and blogging Phoenix Suns!
Yeah, if Redd will mostly be taking Grant's minutes
We can probably expect to be better offensively and worse defensively. I’m gonna assume that Redd still can shoot. He’s one of those guys who will still be a good shooter at age 80.
Not sure how we come out ahead in the deal except that Grant will have fresher legs when he plays.

exactly
Better to have Redd’s offence to keep us in games, and Grant’s fresh leggs to close out games. Who do you think comes out ahead, young BAMF on young Kobe?
No. Grant Hill was probably close to Kobe when he was early in the league.
A truly great player that a lot of peopler have forgotten just how good he was.

Well yes, but I was talking about Hill as a young'un.
Too young to have seen him play during that period.

Young BAMF was LeBron with a clutch gene and class.
And a post game.
As long as we have Steve, I still believe!
Young, in his prime BAMF was not nearly as good as LeBron.
And I’m all for hyperbole. Grant couldn’t even get the Pistons out of the first round while LeBron dragged whomever the fuck was on the 2007 Cavs to the Finals.

Wasn't the East pretty stacked when BAMF came into the league?
LeBron’s primary competition in the East was the Heat and the Pistons.
As long as we have Steve, I still believe!
Gotta agree...
The year Lebron got to the Finals, was a very weak Eastern conference and the Eastern conference was loaded….Grant Hills pistons had to deal with the Bulls, New York, a still vibrant Detroit team, and a up and coming Indiana team in addition to a solid Heat squad..
While Grant wasn’t as good as Lebron (I’ve been watching basketball for 35+ years now and I’ve never seen anything like Lebron…) He was once an elite player. Definitely top five during his time.

Meant to say "Western Conference was loaded..."
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....! BTW, If positivity is a crime, I plead guilty by reason of T-Bird...!
Yes
The East then had the Bulls, Knicks, Heat, Magic, Hornets and Pacers. The Pistons weren’t good enough to upset any of those teams.
Lebron only had to go up against one good team to get to the finals and that was the Pistons and he still managed to upset them. Grant Hill was a very good player then, but I’m with Scott on this one. Lebron was better, however I’d still take a Prime Hill over him because of his personality.

People hate LeBron so much that they lose sight of how incredibly good at basketball he is.
Dude has Top 5 of all-time talent.
Grant’s Detroit Years:
- 28-54 (95)
- 46-36 (first round sweep by Orlando)
- 54-28 (lost in 1st round to Atlanta led by Laettner and Steve Smith)
- 37-45
- 29-21 (lost in 1st round to Atlanta).
- 42-40 (swept in 1st round by Miami).
Grant had great, great talent. Top 10 player in his prime (as evidenced by the 4 All-NBA 2nd team selections) but no LeBron.

I'm probably the biggest LeBron hater out there.
But I will respect his talents and skills. If he had Kobe’s intensity and killer instinct, no team would stand a chance. I’d take Wade over LeBron right now simply because Wade has the heart of a champion. He’ll hit big shots and he has a killer instinct.
As long as we have Steve, I still believe!
Not me
LeBron carried the Cavs to the finals whereas Wade only got there with Shaq. I like Wade better to close a game and to lead a team but LeBron is the one I would take.
I definitely agree if LeBron had loads of intensity like a Kobe Bryant he would be too much for anyone to handle.

And played one year with any talent at all.
He’ll win at least 2 or three championships before he is done. AT LEAST.
I agree.
But just think of the possibilities if he had elite basketball talent or a little bit of equanimity to go with his freakish size and athleticism….
If you think about it, there are a sh** ton of players in the league with more natural basketball ability than Lebron, they just lack his physical abilities.

Jordan had Pippen and Rodman, Kobe won nothing without Shaq and Gasol.
Yeah, Lebron is far and away better.
With that said, you could make an argument that young Hill would be top five talent today. I’d say Lebron, Kobe, Durant and Wade are all better. But who else? Certainly not Melo.

this is the first time I’ve actually been excited about the suns this season. have three vet leaders and an a deep team. just need to get that back up PG. (trade chilly, Price and ? for Luke Ridnour)
should we write off Brooks?
at least get something in return, or is this to late also?
I'm not sure
didn’t even know if he is coming back. if he is then i feel we should give him a shot just because we gave up so much for him. did he accept the qualifying offer?
i think he chose to return knowing the possibily nash might be gone soon
the starting job could be his if nash decides to leave/retire/startplaying mls soccer
"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose"
No he didn't sign the QO
but at the mid point in the season is anybody really going to offer him that much more? PG is one of the positions where you really need practice with the teammates. I think he’ll come back and finish the season with Suns to try and get that payday he thinks he deserves. Hopefully the China league humbles him a bit and gives him that boost of confidence that can increase production.
by oLLiE Boombayay on Jan 12, 2012 2:36 PM MST up reply actions
He has no out in China
He can’t return until around the deadline from memory, at the earliest.
According to this the last game of the Chinese CBA is February 15th, and then the playoffs start.
Brooks’ team is first, so he is definitely in the playoffs. I have no idea how the Chinese playoffs work, but last year 8 teams qualified, with 3 rounds: best of 5, 5 and then 7 in the final. So lets say that takes 6 weeks max, Brooks could be back between March 1st (if his team lose first round) and April 1st (if they make the finals).
All we’d need to pay him would be a prorated contract. If he is back March 1, we’d have 32 games remaining, and april 1st 16. So we’d pay between half and quarter of his yearly salary, meaning we give him $5mil, he only makes between $1.25 and $2.5 mil.
I think the “lose for nothing” theme is also little misguided. If Brooks leaves, we won’t have to overpay a player who was very bad for us last year. If we resign him and keep the RFA status, we can trade him in the off season, that is about the best oucome.
Side note: while researching this, I found this amazing gem: Gani Lawal claims Chinese CBA (player of the) weekly honour
The 23-year old forward had a double-double of 38 points and nineteen rebounds, while his team crushed Bayi Fubang (#14, 6-12) with 19-point margin 102-83.
So Gani is apparently Chinese for “MVP”.
hmmm a 6-9 guy out rebounding a bunch of chinese dudes
sounds about right to me
"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose"
so pretty much
we are going to get the same late season trade production from brooks again. and glad to hear Gani doin his thing. hope he makes his way back to the NBA
Or we don't sign him
Who knows? He is not going to be here long in any case.
that was the team that got into a brawl with georgetown this summer
Ere The Sun Rises!
If he hits his open shots
He will avg 16ppg alone. We create many open oppurtunties in our offense. Shots just dont go down from our wing corps. I think our bigs have shot better from mid/long-range this season that our wings and guards minus nash. Thats disturbing
"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose"
by phxpurple on Jan 12, 2012 1:51 PM MST via Android app reply actions
I'm betting his offense will mostly consist of coming off screens and double screens off the ball.
I feel like the game plan to get him involved will be similar to what we used to do with Dudley.
So we're gonna have him playing the Ray Allen role basically.
As long as we have Steve, I still believe!
i hope not
we dont just need more than 3’s. id like to think of him more of a steve nash but instead of being pass first and creating for teammates, hes shoot first with his ability to hit from anywhere on the court. if hes as healthy as the reports than he can score with the best of them. big if though
"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose"
Uh... doesn't Ray Allen just shoot from anywhere on the court?
He’s not strictly a 3-point shooter. He runs the floor and takes the shots he gets.
As long as we have Steve, I still believe!
Steve Nash is one of the greatest playmaking PGs of all time and Ray Allen is one of the greatest shooters of all-time
Redd doesn’t compare to either of them, at all, but if I had to choose I’d say poor man’s Ray Allen at best.

Even if Redd is just a role playing sharpshooter
it would be a huge boost for this team. The Suns can’t score in the paint and are relying on jump shots which is a huge problem when the best shooter is Nash.
by oLLiE Boombayay on Jan 12, 2012 2:30 PM MST reply actions
We can score in the paint
Both on PnRs and in teh post with Gortat , Hak (as a SF) and Morris posting up successfully so far.
We haven’t used the post nearly enough, especially Hak with the second unit, but all three have shown solid post moves and promise. We just need a guard who can get them the ball.
I think we’ll see more of the post if one of Brown or Price sits, as the offence will flow better, and hopefully Hak will be utilised, well, at all. Morris and Hak could give the second unit some solid points down low, if only we’d call their number.
I have low expectations for Redd
In fact, I never liked his game. People make him out to be a great shooter, but i believe people think that about guys who score and don’t pay attention to their efficiency.
Redd is a career 45% shooter, 38% from 3, which made him a good shooter at best. he sits 107th in true shooting percentage, again, good, but great? My issue is that he has been an injury riddled player that now probably has no legs and less of an ability to create shots for himself, and more than likely his shooting will regress from his average rather than improve.
Dudley is a career 47% and 41% shooter, and athletically, he may be an improvement over Redd at this point, so why do we think he is going to start?
Again, I have very low expectations for him. BUT, if he takes away minutes from Shannon Brown, I am a happy guy.

He can’t hit a barn so far this year, and he’s still productive, especially on D where he works hard and plays fundamentally sound. When his 3 starts falling, he’ll be a plus player again.
Redd is VERY unlikely to unseat Dudley, although he may play a bit with him to rest Hill.
Also, what about Hak? He’s getting no love either, despite playing really well as a three. Give the man the rock!
does anyone know how to watch suns games without league pass if you don't live in arizona?
