Phoenix Suns Roasted by Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers, 101-90
If you viewed this game as an NBA fan, you may have been entertained. As a Suns fan, it was just painful to watch the Phoenix Suns lose 101-90 to the Cleveland Cavaliers while allowing strong rookie PG Kyrie Irving to predictably torch the Suns for a Cavs season-high 26 points to go along with 6 assists.
The Suns' offense, as has become the standard this year, was spread out equally among a number of players, with 6 guys scoring between 10 and 16 points. Michael Redd came out Redd-hot (sorry), hitting his first two 3-pointers in the first quarter to chants of "MICHAEL REDD IS GOD" and other ridiculous things from the BSoTS Game Threads.
Unfortunately, the Suns' defense gave the Cavaliers a little boost in their power rankings, allowing Kyrie Irving to drive the lane at will and slacking off of one of the best three-point shooting teams in the NBA so far this year. It was a game that the Suns were "supposed" to win, but we all know that that means nothing, and has in fact been an area of weakness for Suns teams in the past.
The Cavs looked young and fast tonight, and the Phoenix Suns looked simultaneously like an aging squad and a young, inexperienced one.
The Suns lost the rebounding battle 39-47 and gave up 17 rebounds to Anderson Varejao, the other floppy-haired guy, and allowed the Cavs to shoot over 52% from three. It's quite difficult to win when you give those two categories away.

Game Notes
Michael Redd was surprisingly in-tune in his Suns debut. He hit his first two threes early, followed shortly by a nice hook shot in the paint before he subbed out. It's apparent that he;s not totally in game shape yet, but that;s to be expected. Neither is Grant Hill.
Speaking of, what has been going on with Grant Hill? He only played for 7 minutes in this game mostly due to a bloody nose, but he hasn't looked like himself all year. I'd love to give Grant a lot of slack, but the Suns really need him to step up and start being his old perimeter defender self.
Michael Redd was more than we could have hoped for in his debut, with 12 points, most of which were scored early in the game. Later in the second half, he got tired and started missing short on shots, but I expect that to be remedied with improved conditioning and more practice.
Shannon Brown. What to say? He played more minutes (27) than any other bench player in this game, and he remains his usual inconsistent self. He looked really confident earlier in the game and was hitting outside shots, but he's been the definition of a streaky player, ending with 11 points on 3-9 shooting. Shannon is known for his fast-break abilities, but due to the dire lack of rebounding, he just hasn;t gotten the chance and has been forced to become a jump-shooter.
Robin Lopez looked pretty good in his 5 minutes in this game, notching 2 blocks. Wait, he only played 5 minutes? Lopez will continue to have issues getting playing time behind C Marcin Gortat, who is playing consistently at a high level and is currently 4th in All-Star voting (go vote for him now!). It's reminiscent of the situation Marcin was in before coming to Phoenix, when he was stuck behind Dwight Howard in the Magic's depth chart.
Phoenix Suns Fall To Kyrie Irving's Cavaliers, 101-90 - SB Nation Arizona
"The game was on the boards and we did a poor job on the boards and that's something we've got to take care of," Alvin Gentry said. "I told the guys that here's a team that shoots 43 percent against us and finds a way to win the game and that shouldn't be the case."
The answer Dudley gives about the rebounding is very interesting:

“The Phoenix Suns looked simultaneously like an aging squad and a young, inexperienced one.”
Unfortunately, this line is probably one of the best descriptions I’ve seen for this team so far. Usually older teams are filled with savvy vets and consistent play which makes up for their aging players, but because of the Suns’ constant flux of new and different players surrounding their two aging superstars, the Suns manage to look both old and inexperienced at the same time.

Our basketball players aren’t that great. And boy are they unathletic.

Nash is still great, Gortat is a machine, and Morris is a keeper…

Maybe they can incorporate that into an interactive fan program...
Bring people out of the crowd during intermission to test their vertical leap against Dudley, run wind sprints with Redd, and teach Brown how to make lay ups.
I think it might also be a good idea to involve some of the players in the trampouline dunking segment with the Gorilla because it might be the only chance we get to see them dunking a basketball this year.

Nice Recap
This was, personally, the worst/painful game I’ve watched this season, the Cavs was a much needed W and we let it slipped thanks to allowing Kyrie joining to the Suns Killer list along with his teammate Antawn Jaminson and Varejao.
And the question arises, Are we worst than the Cavs ? Because if so I don’t wanna keep this “last run” with this team, something needs to happen..
Gentry/ET/DanMajerle what is up guys? I know talent is a big issue but there is so much inconsistency in our roster that is hardly possible to make things work, E.G Brown’s role, he can be HUGE and I mean REALLY HUGE for us, but he needs to drive to the basket and get rebounds, occasionally spot up at the 3 point line and shoot it, instead he is just dribbling around without no plan whatsoever resulting on him jacking up turrible shots, same for Dudz who does not have a definite role, is he a defender or a scorer ?,Wasn’t him going to be a key in our offensive game ? Gentry used to light Dragic when he was shy, why not do the same with Dudz? Honestly if Redd plays well, Dudz seems pretty expendable, Hakim/Lopez are not playing as much as we NEED and our defensive rotations are turrible too, one could argue we have been above decent so far, but we always let 12 ppg players have career nights agaisnt us, the Milwaukee game as the Portland game were not a victories, we didn’t win, they lost, and if we are not gonna take the best out of each win and lose and play like a different team every game, I’d want a PG in the next draft thank you.
I’d like to apologize for my extremely bad mood during the gamethread but this was a very heartbreaking game, let’s go for a win tomorrow with our Savior Redd!
Blind enough to believe on Pudgemonster.

well said, recap and apology
I try to always have positive comments, but like you, this one was bad. My apologies as well.I don’t feel nash is the problem, directly, he is a stud. The team is just no longer suited for his style of play (offence first). Example: Morris is a PF, even though he can hit the three the coaching staff should be developing him around the glass, we do not want another Frye??? This is confusing, green light or defence/rebounding. Only great players can do both. Stick to a game plan Gentry. The two bright spots on this team are Gortat and Morris, focus on their post up to open up the outside shot. Oh well, what do I know. Die hard fan.
I wish we could just fast forward to off-season of 2012 instead of having to watch an old, yet still great Nash wear down. Hopefully we can make the playoffs and we certainly have a shot, but that’s just it, a shot… It’s hard to root for a team that only has a chance to make the playoffs. If not Championship Contender, I’d settle for the next best thing, a young, playoff team and if not that, I’d rather settle for a top 10 pick versus a playoff contender. Oh well, that’s not going to happen, so I guess I just have to be patient. This season is going to be rough, but at least it won’t be as bad as 07-08.
By the way, Redd looked good out there.
Don't trade Dudley!
I'm saddened by this loss.
I feel like it shouldn’t have happened and now I feel like those two great games were a fluke. :(

After a loss in L.A. I concerned that we were going to have a letdown against the Cavs at home…. And here we are…. Irving and the boards killed us.

So is Dudley just saying this is their highest potential for rebounding?
He mentioned working on other things offensively and saying they are just not gifted to rebound the ball as well as other teams.

yeah
that was relatively disheartening to hear. Just look at the number one rebounder in the league, Kevin Love. Does he seem like the most athletic guy in the league? No. But he has a great strategy and knack for getting in the right spot and he works his ass off to get the board.
Also, newsflash. If you box out a guy, you get the rebound. Period. It doesn’t matter if the other guy is a foot taller than you, if you box out well you can get the ball. Not happy with Dudley;s answer there.

Probably the first time I have seen a player answer a rebounding question that way
And I was not expecting it at all. To be this soon into the season and having him believe we can’t do anything better or different is kind of off-putting.

Completely agree
We need to be giving maximum effort on the boards. I realize sometimes our bigs are out of position due to help defense but there are times where we have multiple guys around the ball and teams are still coming up with boards. Those are the ones we can’t afford if we are truly at our potential as Dudley is stating.

Unfortunately we're not THAT bad
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
I think I'm already at that point where due to the level of suck, I just don't care if we win or lose
To me, the season is lost, our starting 2 and 3 just do badly with their shots that Brown is having to play despite not being a basketball player.
The good stuff for us going forward are;
1) Morris
2) Gortat, if he learns to box out he man, he’s man is always left unboxed allowing boards to become 50-50. That’s the one thing Lopez does better.
3)Morris
4)Once Redd gets in shape, I won’t have to see too many stupid shots from Brown
5) High pick resulting from being (probably the worst team this season), leading to another piece to add to MORRIS

You're overreacting
The season has barley started, we’re a work in progress. It’s not a sprint to the finish, it’s a marathon. We’ll have our ups and our downs and will certainly have a shot at making the playoffs. We just got to have faith and not give up on this team.
Now unless of course if what you mean by “Lost” is that this season is a waste of time because we should be contending while Nash is still our Franchise player instead of just trying to make the playoffs and rebuild next year, then yeah I agree with ya. If that’s how you look at it then this season is indeed lost, but that should have already been known from the beginning of training camp and not after a loss to the Cavs.
Don't trade Dudley!
I'm in support of getting picks via trades not including Nash, Gortat or Morris (maybe Frye too)

I hope so
It would be quite an accomplishment if they can improve enough to make the playoffs. This is a very untalented and nonathletic team. Although they have a chance, it’s more than likely they’ll find themselves on the outside looking in. It’d be cool if they could exceed expectations.
Don't trade Dudley!
Nash needs to score more, it seems the team needs a 20 PPG guy, I think Redd will be that, but we need 2 guys more to put up 15 to 18 per game, and our options right now are Nash, Gortat (if he stops settling for jumpers), Frye, Morris (same as Gortat, especially going into the post more often)

Yeah, I was just sitting there
waiting and watching for Nash to deliver one of his timely pull-up threes and he never did… I wanted him to try and take over, but he wouldn’t. Our guys we’re struggling to score and in years past when that would happen, Nash would go into “Kobe mode” and score like 10-12 points. Usually that would help the rest of team feel confident and they would start to hit their shots again.
Don't trade Dudley!

He is still being paid and regardless of much, he is supposed to do everything he can to help the team even if it means taking 2 or 3 more shots.
Women were the reason I became a monk - and, ah, the reason I switched back... -Morte, Planescape Torment
Compound that with the fact that he had knee work done and is out of bball shape for a lockout season
Now add that hes 37. People get old. No biggie. Hes been overused and he cant keep expecting him to be lights out. I say let him get some well needed rest the next game or to. In the mesn time thsyll give Redd time to get minuted and back in the flow. Jyd, redd, hak and maybe even chill should be enough. But who knows.

I disagree
For Gortat to bee effectibve he needs to keep hitting that 15 footer. That’s his money shot right now. Not sure i he can excel that way in the post…
also – THIS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuYSuSEuhlQ
Our defensive style (huge hole on the defensive end because of our PG / SG) makes it almost impossible to rbound well. There are so many rotations and switches on D that most of the time our bigs are out of position for the rebound or don’t have an idea who they are boxing out…
For our rebounding to work we need better perimeter defense.
Feed the cutter!!!
by Piotr Szczesniak on Jan 13, 2012 3:45 AM MST up reply actions
I agree with this
If you watch Gortat’s video he tried to take the blame for the rebounding but we wouldn’t let him. The Suns did a poor job containing Kyrie and part of that the was the defensive plan.
During that 14-2 run where Irving went off for 12, Gentry said they changed the defense to stay home on the shooters and go under the screens to make Irving hit long range shots. He hit them. By the time they adjusted back, it was too late.
When Irving did penetrate Gortat had to rotate over and the other big didn’t cover his man on the glass. Some of that is really hard to do when the 4 is Jamison and he’s at the three point line.
Basically, it’s a very difficult predicament when facing a guy like Irving that can break down Nash on his own. In the past, the Suns would put Hill on him but Hill was out of the game and the Suns are trying to not do that kind of cross matching as much this year.
This isn’t a new problem for the Suns. The difference is they can’t score enough anymore to overcome it.

This picture tells the story

Irving has gone by Nash. Gortat is moving over to help defend the rim. Verajao is wide open to get the rebound when Iriving misses b/c of Gortat’s defense.

I didn’t watch the game, but I noticed in the replay that Redd was shooting threes at where Hill would be usually shooting threes, and oh boy, I could see the difference.

They dont even play the same position
And they supply 2 different roles. Dudz might if he gets moved fro. The 2 to the 3 but hills main roles isnt to score

I asked Redd about playing the three, he said in this system there’s really now difference between the two and the three.
The real issue is on defense. Redd can’t defend like Hill can although it’s pretty clear that he’s a better offensive option and should only get better as he works himself into game shape.
I’m worried about Hill though. That knee scope in Sept put him behind the curve and he’s had to play big minutes already so this current knee issue isn’t a surprise. I’m afraid he’ll be playing catch up all year unless they shut him down for at least a week which isn’t likely.

Had work tonight so I missed the game.
While I’m a bit disappointed, I’m not entirely shocked. We are an average team at best. So we’ll occasionally lose winnable games and win difficult ones.
What happened to BAMF? I heard he left because of a bloody nose? We’re going to need him big time to be competitive. He’s really gotta step it up.
And Michael Redd’s statline looked pretty good for a guy who hasn’t played in about 2 years. Once he’s back in game shape, I think we might have ourselves a poor man’s version of a Ray Allen (which is a huge improvement over Shannon Brown).
All in all, I must say you guys missed me in the game threads. 1500 comments only in 2 threads? Let’s go for 2k next time, ok?
As long as we have Steve, I still believe!
Grant never came back because of a knee issue. I believe his is probable for today.

They said he was probably when they reported he would sit out the rest of the game last night.
Not my fault.

I don't know what to put in my sig.
Gahhhh
Irving play was #1 on NBA.com last night. That was really awesome to see even if it was on the other team…

Well...
If he didn’t play against Nash maybe it would be worse?
He abused Nash and Gortat on the PnR.
Also his penetration bust our D wide open. The rotations just weren’t there…

Gortat said he thanked Irving for putting him on Sports Center. He knew right away that play was going to be a highlight

He looked okay to me.
I didn’t really notice him make any particularly bad and/or great plays on defense. I really wasn’t paying attention THAT closely tho. He did, however, seem a little slow, but that is to be expected. I’m hoping that’s just his current level of conditioning, and not a permanent result of his injuries. We’ll see.

Not too bad
but he didn’t have much of a test going up against Casspi most of the night. I did notice a couple times where he looked pretty slow while playing on ball D.
BAMF goes HAM.
Tough loss.
I didn’t watch a game. I have a question. At this moment Suns best scorer is MG. When I looked it stats I see that he made about 10 attemps to shot. Why we don’t have more oportunity to shot for him. Suns Still looking long shot. If MG is really good that give him more ball in offense. Don’t get me wrong. Suns didn’t create scorer who can score even 16 pts per game. Gortat scores with 62 % efficiency. Lets try him. We’ll see how big will be effect.
Yeah, Gortat doesn't box out well, hence he loses boards to bigger Cs as well as workers like Varejao
If we play him with Morris, it improves our chances of getting boards. Also, Frye does well on the boards when the opposing C if boxed out as he is likely taller than the opposing PF, luckily, Lopez is great at boxing out.
We should play a lot of Gortat-Morris and Lopez-Frye. Morris already has shown he can everythin Frye can and more.
Speaking of which, why aren’t the Suns playing Morris more in the post, we need to take advantage of that as well as improve on his post game (he’s the only post guy we’ve got). He isn’t a great (good) PnR guy, though he has the tool for it (he can work on that in the off-seasons, besides we have Gortat and lopez for that). Morris is also a good passer, hence if he starts showing improvement in the post, it opens up other guys

because so far
Morris was shooting fade-aways from low post position and often prefers to hang around the 3 point line.
Also – from Orlando days – Gortat is a GREAT rebounder, but the defensive rotations make it almost impossible for him to box out efficiently. He got 5 blocks in yesterday’s loss and quite a few of other good contests against players other than his C matchup. That means someone else should help out on the boards when MG is out of position…

I did see a decent amount of P&R between Morris & Nash
I remember seeing at least one nice pass out of the roll situation where he hit someone open and also got to the line another time for foul shots. IDK the few times I saw him run it he looked decent at the very least. To me it looked like he can still improve in that area of his game.

Gortat can't really get his own shot
So he relies on ol’ Stevie to get him his baskets most of the time. This is one of the problems of having someone take more shots.

Really?
Then why is he assisted on like 80% of his baskets?

Because assists count weird in the NBA
when he got in the post against the Blazers he had those two nice shimmy hook shots and they were also assisted in the stat sheet. I guess it depends only on the timebetween the ball and taking the shot and not if the pass madeit easier for the scorer

True
But still, he doesn’t really post up very often. I am not saying he is completely incapable of getting a shot but he is not someone I would trust to get me a basket on his own. He has some nice moves occasionally but I don’t see him posting up enough / facing up and hitting a shot. He still needs more work on creating his own offense.

I have a feeling that if Hill had played more we probably would have won...
Seems to me that Antwan (raised from the dead..) Jamison would have not gone bonkers llike he did with Hill. Maybe Kyrie Irving doesn’t do a Chris Paul imitation either.
I dare say I am about as positive as we come, but this was a painful game to watch. Redd can shoot, but boy does he make an already unathletic team even that more immobile.
I will continue to believe we make the playoff, but we need a Suns teams that comes ready to compete each and every day. It’s the only way we overcome our deficiencies as a team. I know it will take time to indoctrinate Redd, but we still gotta rebound and play defense.
That being say, I believe we can do it…Let’s Go Suns….!!!!!
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....! BTW, If positivity is a crime, I plead guilty by reason of T-Bird...!
fire GENTRY!!!
HOW AND WHY SHANNON BROWN PLAYED THE MOST MINUTES AS A BENCH PLAYER? DID GENTRY NOT SEE HIM AS INCONSISTENT???? (sorry for the caps…)
I will answer you with a quote from Gentry from LA Times about Brown (before the Lakers game)
Phoenix Coach Alvin Gentry said before the game that Brown needs to look for his shot more.
“He’s a little bit too unselfish,” Gentry said, “and we want him to be a scorer when he’s out on the floor and be aggressive taking the ball to the basket and create.”
Needless to say, in the eyes & mind of Gentry: Shannon Brown is J-Rich or Barbs
Women were the reason I became a monk - and, ah, the reason I switched back... -Morte, Planescape Torment
the problem with brown
is that his ambition does not match his skill set. he’s (trying) to play for a big contract, and i’m sure that in his mind he could be, if not a superstar, then at least a second-tier, james-harden-type guy.
i really think that part of finding success as an NBA player is figuring out what you’re good at (and doing those things) and being realistic about the things you’re NOT good at (and not doing those things)
Things Brown is good at:
- making quick cuts to the basket for assisted layups/dunks
- getting out on the fast break
- playing pesky defense
Things Brown is NOT good at:
- running the offense
- shooting jump shots
- passing
- dribbling
He’s an athletic but incredibly limited player. The sooner he and the coaching staff realize it, the sooner he can focus on only playing to his strengths, and actually make a postiive contribution. That, or he can be banished to the bench
Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

Bad loss...
But at least we aren’t the Hawks. Al Horford is out at least 3 months with a torn pectoral muscle.
This could either be bad news for us or good news. Good news if the Hawks fall out of the playoff hunt, and decide to hold a fire sale on pricey vets (netting us Josh Smith). Bad news if the Hawks stay in the hunt and have to rely on Smoove to get them there (most likely).

Good teams find a way to win even when a good player goes down...
Which the Hawks did last night (granted they played the Bobkittens). It would be too easy to give up once you see your inside horse is out of commission for a good bit, but good teams find a way to keep going. Not saying Atlanta is going to be a beast, but it’s the mindset we gotta have…We find ways to win…
I’m not giving up on this team till the bitter end..Don’t you’ll give up on them either—-We can do this..Let’s Go Suns..>!!!!

I'm not giving up at all
I just want Josh Smith on the Suns! We definitely need some athleticism and excitement on our team.

Irving looked amazing
To think he’s only 19! Such quickness, strength and talent. Better than Rubio? He and scrubs like Gee made us look old, slow and disorganized. Their old guy Jamieson played with lots of energy and hurt us all night. BAMF is playing hurt and this affects us more than it should. I agree with those who question some of the rotation decisions. Why so few minutes for Rolo and Hak? Redd looked poised and comfortable so I guess that’s cause for continuing to watch – but it’s becoming a bit like slowing down to identify road kill. Ugh!
Go (away) Suns?
Well, Irving was the first overall pick, and Rubio wasn't.
Irving is really, really good. He got off to a slow start while trying to figure out the NBA game (after I think just 11 games in college) but it appears he’s starting to get the hang of it. Look out.

Steve guarding you usually helps but he made some really nice plays. I just wish he hadn’t gone to Duke (even though it wasn’t for a full season of games…)!

Let me preface this by saying the Suns did not lose last night because of Shannon Brown
Now that that’s out of the way, the play that pissed me off the most last night (and there were quite a few) was this one…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2fNoOrYfGU&t=1m29s
Watch Shannon Brown on this play. It makes me want to throw my laptop out the window. Brown has to be aware of Casspi there and yell to Frye that there’s a player cutting behind the zone. Channing needs to be more aware too, but god damn.
BAMF goes HAM.
that is truly god-awful.
