Game Preview: Phoenix Suns Start Road Trip at San Antonio Spurs
Today, the Phoenix Suns kick off their five-game road trip in a trip to my home state to face the San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio is off to a dominant 8-0 start at home, with an 8-4 record overall.
The Suns are reeling from a three-game losing streak capped by a Steve Nash- and Grant Hill-less loss to the New Jersey Nets on Friday. The past two losses have seen the Suns give up big numbers to opposing point guards Kyrie Irving and Deron Williams, a problem that could continue today against the Spurs' Tony Parker, the team's leading scorer at 17.8 ppg.
The Spurs are playing without star and team leader Manu Ginobili, who broke his shooting hand two weeks ago, while the Suns may be without Steve Nash and Grant Hill, who are both questionable with sore legs and Steve's chronic back pain.
After compiling the best record in the Western Conference and promptly losing in the first round of the playoffs to the Memphis Grizzlies, the Spurs are out to prove that their run as an elite NBA team isn't over yet. The Suns are struggling in a similar vein, trying to remain competitive while transitioning from being an elite team to a rebuilding one.
The Suns look to improve on their 1-3 record last season against the Spurs, and the Spurs are seeking to even the all-time wins between the teams at 72 apiece.
A look at the Spurs' stat lines:
Game Notes:
Tim Duncan vs Channing Frye: "Timmeh" is averaging career lows of 11.1 points and 6.6 rebounds at age 35. His game as a forward is opposite that of Channing's, and it'll be interesting to see whether Channing remains on Duncan or whether Gentry decides to put Frye on Dejuan Blair and Marcin Gortat on Tim Duncan. Either way, the Duncan/Blair duo makes for matchup problems for the Suns.
Tiago Splitter vs. Markieff Morris: my grandmother will no doubt be sitting in her San Antonio home cheering on Tiago Splitter, her favorite young Spur. Spurs fans love this Brazilian guy and he just scored a season-high 14 points Friday. Markieff Morris can handle him, though. 'Kieff has been a great early surprise this year and a bright spot for Suns fans.
If there's any game for Robin Lopez to 'get his' it's this one. He'll likely match up with Matt Bonner, who he should be able to handle in the post. Lopez, despite solid per-48 numbers, has been unable to get the minutes that he perhaps deserves behind the Suns' best scorer, Marcin Gortat.
Jared Dudley and Channing Frye are crucial elements to Suns' success. Can they find their game and help save this season?
Upcoming Road Trip
The Suns' recent struggles have caused over-reaction by many fans, including myself, who are calling the season a loss already and are hoping for a high draft pick next year. The season is still young, however, and the Suns still have a chance to right the ship. Let's start that tonight and with this road trip.
Road Trip Schedule:
Today: at San Antonio Spurs
Tues: at Chicago Bulls
Wed: at New York Knicks
Fri: at Boston Celtics
Mon: at Dallas Mavericks
yikes. Let's get a win today!

im gonna step out on a limb and state that this road trip could bury the suns. there are no moral victories.
i’d say they need to at least go .500 to keep pace in the west and kepp everyone’s head’s up in the locker room.

No moral victories
But it’s hard to find any likely actual victories in these five games. 2-3 is probably the best we can hope for.

so the suns are 2-3 in their last 5 which included 4 home games against the likes of NJ, CLE, and MIL. Any chance they can do that on the road with Hill and Nash nursing injuries, against the WC titans.
Maybe they can do an Indy Colts impression and we can all find some positive to this season.

I think I agree with this
After our 3 bad home losses so far we need to come out at least .500 for the roadie. I don’t think I see that happening though TBH. Hopefully I am wrong hahahah.

Nice preview PHXgp!
Tonight is the start of a very tough stretch ahead. Even though San Antonio has been playing great, this might be our most winnable game due to some favorable match-ups for the Suns.
We just don’t play well against young, fast, and athletic teams. Luckily, SA is none of the above. Instead, they are a very tough and consistent team with veteran leadership and productive role players. If the Suns are going to get this win, everyone will have to be on their game tonight.
I really do believe we can get this win, and we desperately need it; not only for our standings, but also for our team’s moral and confidence going forward.

seriously. We need this one.
I think this is a very winnable game even though the Spurs are 8-0 at home. The whole team knows that this is a must-win, Ginobili’s out, Tim’s not producing as much as usual. If we can jump out to an early lead I think we have this one in the bag.
I just don’t want to get a gloating call from my grandma after the game.

I was thinking the opposite for the same reason.
I think this is a very winnable game even though the Spurs are 8-0 at home.
I think the Suns need this game more than it is a “winnable game”. I really don’t see them beating the Bulls, then the Knicks is on a B-2-B… so if they lose this game it will not adumbrate favorably.
Time for the Jekyll Suns to show up… or the Hyde Suns… whichever Suns it is that kick ass and take names.

We can win this game.
Teamwork. Spurs play this way. They don’t have player Kobe or Deron caliber. With the same effort like in game with Jets and focus on D it’s possible to win. Yeah possible.
If Kawhi Leonard have a breakout game agaisnt us...it is all pretty simple
We are working pretty hard to make other rookies look amazing and screwing Morris.
roses are red violets are blue, Michael Redd is coming for you!
I’m playing Leonard on fantasy team today. He will kill us.

I hope we smash them
Nothing cheers me up like beating the Spurs.
Well…maybe beating the Lakers.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

I am really worried about this game
National TV, on the road, on a losing streak. I really hope we don’t get destroyed by SA at home. I do think we have a chance to win but if we keep getting worked on the boards we will not win this game either.

I just hope that we don’t view rebounding as a lost cause and start boxing out.
How you box out DeJuan Blair, I have no idea. The guy’s a truck.

There HAS to be room for improvement on the boards when even average teams are out-rebounding us by a decent amount. I know we aren’t atheletic but get a body infront of your man!

It;s got to be a state of mind...
Great rebounding doesn’t necessitate great athleticism..It just requires heart, deeterminatin and a willingness to fight for position. It also requires a belief that you can compete on the boards. If you believe that you can rebound with other teams, the battle is already lost…

On another note...
… if Steve and Grant plays, let’s just Michael Redd can stay on the floor for at least 25mins and hope Alvin gives Robin some burn. a 2nd unit of Hill, Brown, Redd, Morris and Lopez.
committed to players proudly wearing their Suns jersey..
For me (talking about Redd) he determines his minutes
He doesn’t look like he is ready for more minutes than we have given him. His shots late in games are all falling short and that is because he has no legs in his shot. He has been away from the game for some time and needs a little period to get his legs back.

Go SUNS!
I hope we let Brown/Price take Parker tonight. They can restrict him better than Nash.
Also, check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRI5N-FcFEc – Sonny Weems with a match winning dunk – man that’s a good play.
Nash and Hill to play tonight

They have Kawhi Leonard starting at SG?
BAMF goes HAM.
The question will be how effective are they going to be
And how much will they actually play.

STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....! BTW, If positivity is a crime, I plead guilty by reason of T-Bird...!
Gortat needs to get more shots, plain and simple
He’s not shooting lights out because he’s on a “hot streak”, he’s shooting lights out cause he’s as good as ever on pick and roll (number one in the league at 1.37 points per possession shooting a ridiculous 69,6%), however he’s also a LOT better in the post (19th at 0,88 points per possesion in the post and he’s converting on 55% of those).
Offensively he’s ranked 11th among ALL players in offensive efficiency, so clearly, he needs more shots. We have our first option right there just waiting to be utilized. Shooting 63% means he needs, that’s right, NEEDS more shots, he needs not 10, but 14, 15, 16 FGA a game. Every game, not just every third or fourth game. EVERY SINGLE GAME.
He can be the first option, not one that will create for himself much, but he can work down on the block now, especially with confidence sky high in his shot as it is right now. Gentry needs to stop trying to get Brown going and just give Gortat more looks. He’ll make them and that will open up the floor for everyone else.
On O, he’s at that bump where he can go from borderline to All-Star, to legitimate All-Star caliber player. We need that, cause hell, we ain’t got anything else going for us. And he’s not going to polish off his post game just by getting the ball there twice a game, really. He’s been getting better and better at it every single game, but he just needs more looks.
not only that...
but the more we do that, the more attention he gets, thus drawing in help D ( if not outright double teams against some smaller teams), thus opening up shots for our outside shooters, which we actually now have!
not only THAT, but this also saves Nash from having to babysit the ball for 20 seconds of each possession.
hm this all sounds like a very familiar strategy…
Also, him getting more looks means maybe, possibly, DOUBLE TEAMS.
And if there’s one skill he has that’s rare for a 7-footer, it’s passing.
Shaq had a reputation as being a more than serviceable passer out the post...
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....! BTW, If positivity is a crime, I plead guilty by reason of T-Bird...!

I want to see morris vs blair in the post. Given the way the spurs are playing at home i’m not expecting a win, but anything is possible. Go Suns!
Blair is a proven beast of a rebounder in the post...
I think Morris will have his handsful trying to keep Blair from rebounds. Where Morris will earn his money is pulling him away from the rim…

Great preview, gp
As I said after our last loss, the Suns just need to play better and execute within their capabilites. I don’t expect this tem to be a juggernaut, but I do want them to play up to their capabilites. I know in my heart this team was better than the Cavs team they lost to at home.
Someone said that maybe this Suns team need a long road tour to gel together..Maybe we should expect the unexpected and this Suns team comes back from this trip 4-1. Yeah I know…That’s some serious positivity right there, but what else can we do??? Right now my unwavering faith in this team is all I can do because they haven’t show much that I can consistently count on.
