JC79's Trade Idea Best Yet
In an earlier post, JC79 suggests trading Lopez for Eric Bledsoe. Usually these rosterbation movements produce silly results, or at the very least headaches. This one is actually a gem...
Lopez is a backup C that some [outside of PHX] believe has potential and could someday possibly be a serviceable center in this league. Yes, he is inconsistent, but has some value for center starved teams.
Bledsoe has been an underutilized player due to having other players in front of him making a lot of money [Baron Davis, Mo Williams, Chris Paul]. He seems to be a player that has some ability. While the jury is still out on him, the thought of trading our inconsistent backup center [which with the emergence of Morris means we don't really need him] for an inconsistent backup point guard [on a cheap rookie deal] might be a great way to get a solid backup PG for the future. Who knows, he may turn out to be another KJ like acquisition, since we knew little about KJ when we traded for him.
Heck, maybe we can trade Hak for Gomes as part of this deal. Gets $16.75M of Haks deal off our plate for basically a similar player in Gomes.

Not saying this is some sort of “savior” trade. just a nice little deal that will turn value for us.

The Clippers don;t need Bledsoe,
Here is what Hollinger said about Bledsoe’s return
The frontcourt depth is scary bad, and letting consistently productive Craig Smith slink off to Portland for the minimum was a tremendous oversight. At some point, the Clippers need to parlay their backcourt depth into a decent third big man. No, one-trick pony Evans doesn’t qualify.
They might even be tricked into giving up more (a pick or two).
Bledsoe is a very raw talent, but compares similiarly to westbrook in the speed and athleticism department. He really needs some time learning the position but could be a very worthy gamble for us.
An interesting thought i had earlier(not necessarily a trade idea) involves brook lopez.
Reading an article on the real gm wiretap, it said that the nets were unlikely to offer brook an extension. Seeing how westbrook has just signed a five year extension and the wolves are now pitching a max offer to love, maybe we should consider reuniting the lopez brothers next season.
Robin would still come off the bench, while brook would play next to gortat at the four spot. Markieff would also come off the bench to help spark the defense with his toughness, energy and perimeter shot.
We would then have more size, talent and depth on our frontline than any other team in the west with three athletic seven footers in the lopez twins and gortat. Add to that a stronger, tougher and more athletic bench with frye(going back to his best position off the bench)morris, dudley, brown(if he continues to get better this season) and price and our bench is loaded and intimidating.
Then if there’s any money left over we try and add mayo as our starting shooting guard and draft a kendall marshall, jeff teague or austin rivers as our point of the future.
That would be an extremely talented, young suns team with scary size and depth for next season.

Jeff Teague is already in Atlanta Hawks
Marquis Teague sucks. Austin Rivers is a shooting guard.

Damn dude r u high
Going out and stocking a bunch of bad bigs and trying to make them play out of position is not good.
What you want morris or ftye to go to SF? And where does warrick fit in. not to mention the chemistry issues. Im not sure lopez will stay knowing his bro will be ahead of him. And lopez isnt a PF hes a center and to good to be just a backup center so he won’t come here and hes not worth alot of money which is e
What he want. You must be trollin.
All in all though to the OP this is decent trafe

No Likey
The 2nd unit would get killed without Lopez to protect the paint. Fropez is better than his stats and is very important to the 2nd unit.
Kind of off topic
but, who exactly are the sun’s targeting for FA next year (love is close to signing a new deal, and didn’t westbrook sign a new deal)?
if the “big” names are off the market, then don’t the sun’s have to make a trade now (at least for picks)?
Kevin Durant and Deron Williams

Think about it, you totally missed the point of what i was trying to say. Lopez and frye would move back to the bench where they have been most effective in past seasons. That would add firepower with frye’s shooting and defensive intensity with lopez’s aggressiveness to our bench.
Putting his brother at the power forward spot where we could take advantage of his size and scoring ability would also help take some of the offensive burden off gortat. The only potential downside to this is that markieff would have to take amundson’s old spot off the bench as well.
Having two offensively skilled and athletic seven footer’s in the starting lineup (marcin and brook) would make it harder to score on us in the paint while giving back some of that scoring we lost with stoudamire’s departure to new york.
I doubt that frye would play small and i know he certainly couldn’t defend there but that wasn’t the the idea behind the aquisition of brook lopez this off-season anyway. I do believe that given his defensive prowess, markieff could defend either forward spot, but i’d keep him as the backup power forward behind brook and worry about frye’s position( splitting time at center or power forward later.
Given the fact that westbrook has already signed a five year extension with the thunder, and the wolves are going to pitch a max contract to love it seems to limit our choices in free agency a little. Rumors have been circulating for some time now that the grizzlies aren’t that enamored with mayo and would be willing to let him try free agency.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the suns made him an offer knowing that we aren’t getting any scoring from the shooting guard position. Otherwise they may target eric gordon.
People may think this idea of getting the other lopez and possibly mayo is crazy, but they forget that the nets would be willing to let him go in order to pursue howard while trying to keep williams.
He may be injured but when healthy brook lopez is a talented post-scorer that can rebound and run the floor. How does our bench depth and defense not improve by moving robin, markieff, jared and ronnie there, while adding size and scoring with brook and gortat as our twin towers?
I realize that this wouldn’t be the blockbuster off-season moves (and of course it’s all speculation right now) that everyone was hoping for,but it could ensure that we can make the playoffs and maybe pull off an upset next season.
I almost forgot to add that since we would be obtaining both brook lopez and mayo in free agency, we could still fill another need with our lottery pick. Most likely at pointguard or small forward depending on what the front office decides to do about steve and grant of course.
Just so you know
Brook is a worse rebounder than Robin (who is not great himself).

Brook was a 10 rpg guy
his first year. Then they got Chris Humphries, rebounding machine, to play next to him, and his numbers dipped.

Brook has never been a rebounder.
In college, Robin handled that chore.

Also, I think I know why teh Nets won 12 games that year

Brook Lopez and OJ Mayo would be good pickups – but I’m not sure they would be any good together. They are both offensively talented and defensively challenged. I’d rather Eric Gordon over Brook Lopez.

Spitfire, i don’t think marquis teague is as bad as people think, the scouts and his coach feel that based on his speed, athleticism, potential and playmaking he’s the best overall pointguard prospect.
In the games i’ve seen him play i’ll admit that his game needs alot of polish, but the talent is certainly there. Right now, kendall marshall and scott machado are the college game’s best playmakers and currently the two best pointguards.
Given time to learn the position better, teague could be nearly unstoppable in transition when he gets to the nba. Rivers clearly isn’t ready regarding his maturity and occasional selfishness with the ball, but he has size, impressive athleticism and is a deadly scorer.
I have to believe that coach k will straighten him out and make sure he fully understands the team concept before he chooses to go pro, or he will continue to come off the bench until he does. Despite that, he’s an elite talent at the guard position and we could certainly make use of his abilities at either guard spot here in phoenix.
I would rather go with a player that can contribute immediately like when the Suns chose Markieff over Marcus.

I admire your enthusiasm for all things Lopez, but let’s face it, the nets would be dumping Lopez for a reason – he hasn’t progressed in his time in the league and his ceiling has been met.
Yes, he shows an ability to score unlike any other Lopez. He is a low post scorer who often forces shots against double teams and NEVER passes the ball out of it. Offensively, he and Gortat would be in each other’s way and they are not a good fit for each other. Ultimately Morris would end up starting with Gortat and Brook would be coming off the bench. Yes he is an upgrade over Robin, but then you don’t need Robin.
As far as Teague is concerned, there is no guarantee he will come out early [although with kentucky, you never know]. Teague needs to stay another year and I doubt he leaves. If you said draft Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, then yeah. That guy can flat out play. He is the second coming of Michael Finley. But he will be top 5 and I am not sure we will have a top 5 pick [maybe 6-9]. Kendall Marshall is not good enough to draft 6-9, nor is Scott Machado for that matter. Both of those guys are later in the 1st round types.
Austin Rivers is flat out not a point guard and will not ever be one, Coach K or not. I do not want undersized shooting guards that cannot defend.
let’s get rid of our Lopez, rather than doubling up!

I think Bledsoe is interesting...
But I’m not sure how much we gain with this trade…This one iI categorize as “iffy…”
Let's do this...!
we gain
by adding a young promising player that has yet to be given enough minutes to write him off, and we add by subtracting a guy that has been given enough minutes to write him off.
Assets are not just guys that everyone knows is an all-star. Assets are guys people project as talent and are willing to give up something for.
Plus, I actually think the guy can play and has starting ability in him. He has been behind multiple players making above $10M and teams aren’t going to play him in front of them when their team is losing and they traded for those big money guys.
by hubertdavisfor3 on Jan 20, 2012 3:43 PM MST up reply actions
True
The other way to look at it is what do we lose? Lopez isn’t likely to get much better, and his value is only high for a team with a lack of bigs.
Dont you guys already have Telfair and Price to back up Nash?
I don’t think EB is someone you guys should be looking for.
we’re cheap, like to drink and are pissed off.
WHO WANTS A FREE SHARPIE?? -- Blake Griffin
Price is a good backup PG
and Telfair is rubbish.
Nash’s contract is expiring, he’s 37, and we aren’t contenders. I think we anticipate Nash going to a contender next year, unless we pull off some amazing signing next offseason. So we’re looking for a starting PG.

Ok then...Throw in Shannon Brown and we got a deal!!

I don't know if we can even trade Shannon
the CBA prohibits signing a veteran to a 1 year deal and then trading him the same year, I think.
Maybe you just have to have the guys permission. I forget what it is, but I know there’s some kind of trade restriction.
Voted most likely to say "I told you so"
Even if we could, I don't think the salaries match
Lopez is making about $4M a year, and Shannon is $3.5M
What’s Bledsoe – $2.5M? You’ll have to throw in another ~$5M worth of something that expiring or non-guaranteed.
Voted most likely to say "I told you so"
Yes
and Bledsoe has potential to be a quality starting point guard in this league. Price, telfair are clearly career backups. Bring Bledsoe along under nash for the next two years, hand it over to him. He is solid.

funny we’re arguing with the guy who has watched Bledsoe for the last 2 years. Maybe, its possible, that Bledsoe’s ceiling isn’t that high.

yes
much like we know Lopez is garbage. Rather have Bledsoe and take the chance he was underutilized, then keep lopez who has had his shot

What about more complicated trade:
Mo Williams and Bledsoe for Lopez and JCHill – not sure the Clippers go for that, but maybe?
ya no more crappy PG's
should look to the draft for the future PG get a Rubio type. and hopefully Nash can guide him for a couple seasons
Since nobody’s too enamored with any of this draft’s more publicized pointguards(marshall may be the exception for a few fans here because of his kidd-like passing ability) here are some talented lesser known prospects that my draw a fair amount of interest.
Tony wroten of washington, scott machado of Iona(already mentioned by omaha sun in an earlier post) Damian lillard of Weber State and maliik wayaans of villanova.
We should be able to draft the player we want with our lottery pick and then aquire a mid to late first round pick after our selection in order to aquire one of these guys.
A suns draft of terrence jones and tony wroten sounds pretty good. Or brad beal and damian lillard would bring alot of athleticism and firepower to our backcourt next season.
Wroten may not come out and he is likely to be top 7-8 when he does

Let's See, The Suns havn't been able to
acquire an effective back up point guard for the entire time Stever Nash has been with the team. Going after a raw player like Bledsoe? It is way, way too late for that type of action. The team needs someone who can step into the position today. I also doubt that there are any takers for Lopez. His back problems, head problems etc., make him an tough sell. He certainly didn’t come into the season ready to play basketball.
again, this is a minor deal that has potential to bring a decent value for the risk
Lopez sucks and is playing his way out of PHX [or the NBA]. Bledsoe has been behind several players making 7 figures, so he hasn’t been given an opportunity there. He has skills that translate into being a solid backup PG, or even a starter if he develops. Throwing Lopez away for this is a no-brainer. AGAIN, this isn’t a deal that transforms the Suns. it is a small side deal that gets rid of waste for something of value.
BTW, Dragic was quite effective as a backup at times. Our issue isn’t our inability to acquire backup PG’s, it is our inability to make quality roster decisions by our front office.
by hubertdavisfor3 on Jan 23, 2012 4:36 PM MST up reply actions
I don't think Lopez sucks
I think he’s been used wrong. He struggled as a pick n roll player because he isn’t one. He struggled posting up because he’s not a post up player.
Offensively, Lopez is limited to being a shooter, and a finisher at the rim. Defensively, he’s a pretty good player.
He’s a solid backup in this league for a team that likes to crowd the lane with big bodies on one end, and open it up on the other.

With regards to my suggestion on adding brook lopez as a plan B in free agency
Lopez is what he is, when healthy, a solid backup to gortat. Looking at the fact that we weren’t going to get howard, westbrook, love(just accepted a max contract) or williams(stated he’s considering dallas, los angeles and possibly resigning with new jersey as long as howard goes there, that’s why i considered the other lopez.
I realize he’s not a good rebounder(neither of them are because of their incosistency) but at the time i thought since we weren’t getting any of the major players mentioned above brook’s inside scoring and size would be nice to have,to try and take some of the scoring burden off of gortat.
The only guys that would move to the bench would have been morris (to provide better energy, defense and toughness in a similiar role to lou amundson when he was here. ) and frye.
Frye moves back to his old spot at backup center so he can come in off the bench without the pressure of starting(which he doesn’t handle well anyway). Warrick would share the small forward spot with hill and the backcourt would essentially remain the same, depending on who we draft of course.
If all top impact free agents re-sign or go to bigger markets, then we may have to choose from a group including the other lopez.
It’s better to get something than nothing in free agency, even though there’s alot of people here that can’t see the upside to my suggestion of adding brook to our front line and that’s ok, everyone’s got their own opinion on what the suns should do.
I simply view adding brook as a plan B in case we don’t land a star free agent.
It’ll be interesting to see where we end up making our selection. Some sites have us in the thirteen to fifteen range while others have us in the seven to ten range. Either way we will end up with an impact player in the upcoming draft.
Then, all we need is to aquire another mid to late first rounder and we can add two great backcourt prospects or a small forward and a backup center (if lopez is traded for the aquired pick) .
If we choose to address our backcourt needs we might take brad beal and tony wroten( if gm’s are scared off by his old knee injury) or maybe john henson and jeffrey taylor. Either of these scenarios would make for a very exciting suns draft.
