Phoenix Suns vs. Boston Celtics Game Preview
When we previewed the Suns current 5-game road trip, the fourth game of the trip against the Boston Celtics looked to be one of the more difficult matchups. After all, in the four seasons since the Celtics acquired Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to complete their new "Big Three", they've won at least 60 games twice, at least 50 games in the two other seasons, won the Finals once and narrowly lost in another Finals appearance.
This has been one of the league's elite teams. But the key phrase in that statement might just be "has been", as the aging Celtics are off to a slow start at 5-8, and talk of "blowing up the team" is swirling after it took a game against the lowly Raptors for the Celtics to snap a 5-game losing streak.
The Suns broke a 5-game losing streak of their own with a win over the stumbling New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden Wednesday by holding the Knicks' wannabe dynamic duo of Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony to a combined 12-44 shooting from the field. Before that the Suns were in a free fall, dropping from the doorstep of the Western Conference's top 8 teams down to #13, losing to good teams and bad alike along the way.
Which of these old, floundering teams is ready to gain a little momentum with a second consecutive win?
Follow the jump for more.
The Suns and Celtics split their two games last season, with the Suns laying waste to the Celtics 88-71 in Phoenix last January 28th in one of their best performances of the season. When the Suns went to Boston, the Celtics returned the favor with a 115-103 blowout win.
Marcin Gortat led the Suns in their win with a 19 point, 17 rebound outing and Vince Carter scored 17 (yes, he did have a few good games for the Suns), but the most memorable event in the game was Kevin Garnett's classless low blow to Channing Frye's nether regions as Frye was landing from a jump shot. In case you have forgotten, watch this. (Take special note of that blowhard jackass former ESPN analyst and current Warriors coach Mark Jackson inexplicably defending Garnett):
Last season was mostly of the soul-sucking nature for Suns fans. There wasn't much to get too excited or disappointed about. It was just bleh. But this....THIS!.....My blood was boiling watching this go down, and I remember that game as one of the sweetest victories of the season. I might have even used a few naughty words in the game thread to describe my feelings about Garnett, and those feelings have not gone away AT ALL. His team is getting whipped and his response is to punch a defenseless opponent in the groin? Garnett might be a future HOF-er, but he's a punk for moves like that. He's one of the players I hate the most in the NBA and I'm frothing at the possibility the Suns can stick it to him again.
Channing's mother Karen Frye wasn't happy about Garnett's cowardly act either, as she explained to our own Eutychus when he asked her about the incident on Suns media day last month.
The Celtics got us back in that second game last year. This is the only time we face them this year, and could be the last time we ever face this core group of players. So, win this F@*#-ing game, Suns. Win it for Karen Frye, win it for all of us. I want Kevin Garnett to walk off that court completely pissed off.
Now, on to the game details.
This year's version of the Celtics continues the slow, grinding style we're accustomed to seeing from them, as they're 27th in the league in pace and the average score of their games so far is 90.2-91.0. All of the numbers show them to be a thoroughly average team: they're 19th in O-Rating and 16th in D-Rating. For a team that's been a championship contender, that is quite a drop. As Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen age deeper into their 30s, point guard Rajon Rondo has become more of their true franchise player. Rondo leads the team in assists and is second in scoring.
The good news for the Suns is that Rondo is doubtful to play after injuring his right wrist against the Raptors on Wednesday night. Journeyman combo guard Keyon Dooling would be a prime candidate to replace Rondo, but he missed practice on Thursday due to injury and is also unlikely to play. Second year pro Avery Bradley, he of the 81 points and 18 assists total in his career, looks to be the next in line, so this should give the Suns a great opportunity to control the Celtics offensive output. Update 1/20/12 10:53AM MST: Rondo's MRI results were negative. He's now a game-time decision and says he expects to play, according to the Boston Globe.
Questions remain about the Suns lineup as well, although the team is reasonably healthy. Alvin Gentry inserted Ronnie Price and Markieff Morris as starters Wednesday night. The pair wasn't particularly effective and one of the players sent to help bench production, Jared Dudley, went scoreless, but the Suns did have steadier production throughout the game. They didn't lose any of the four quarters to the Knicks, so a similar lineup can probably be expected tonight. Update II 1/20/12 12:25PM MST: Paul Coro reports that the starting linueps will be:
PG: Steve Nash vs. Rajon Rondo
SG: Ronnie Price vs. Ray Allen
SF: Grant Hill vs. Paul Pierce
PF: Markieff Morris vs. Kevin Garnett
C: Marcin Gortat vs. Jermaine O'Neal
Note: Our esteemed contributor Jim Coughenour did BSotS proud Wednesday in an appearance on New Hampshire ESPN affiliate WGAM. His brilliant piece analyzing the Suns early season results gained the station's attention and he participated in a telephone interview, the podcast of which can be found here (go to about the 3/4 way mark). Ray Allen.....
…. would be a good fit on our team. It keeps us old, but he’s the perfect consistant long range guru that hustles the Suns need. Would Frye and Redd be a fair trade?

Suns vs Celts
SUNS need to play physical against Boston like they did in NY. I would even start Lopez and let him bruse up Garnet with a couple early hard fouls. Boston seems to have trouble with stamina late in games. If the SUNS can push the ball early it should pay off in the 4th qtr. And we cannot let Michael Pietrus have a carreer night. Need to put him in check. I’m sure he’ll be looking forward to this game. I say put Dudz on Allen and Hill on Pierce. GO SUNS!
MP
I really hope Pietrus doesn’t have a “you should of never let me go” revenge game as well. Why he didn’t excell in our system still baffles me. I guess he is just not that good and peaked in Orlando when they made it to the finals.

He wanted OUT of there. He refused to travel or participate with them once the lockout was over. If Grant Hill gets the chance to guard him, I hope he shuts him down. It probably won’t be hard either.

anyone but him, he will be looking to go off, and probably has greenlight. Same with Lopez on Garnett. Lopez could get under his skin easy, get him boiling. Even before the incident with Frye I hated Garnett, seems like there was something else, maybe with Amare, can’t remember???
Oh yeah
Amare vs. KG was one of the best PF matchups and KG would try to bait Amare with his dirty bag of tricks.

and former Suns fan favorite Mickael “the mad bomber” Pietrus (who dropped four threes on the Raptors Wednesday night).
I think that getting some high energy defensive intensity could be a key to the game. I would like to see Price out there for at least 10-15 minutes on Rondo, being as pesky and tenacious as possible – trying to get under his skin. Same for some of the other match ups, bring a constant all-out defensive assault.
This is a game where the Suns should need to have more energy than their opponent. I think that if the Suns are the more aggressive and engaged team, they win.
Thanks for the big ups, Ray.

Doc Rivers had some very high praise for Nash
"I watched him last night when I got home and you laugh because he’s just destroying people," Rivers said. "Yesterday he put a clinic on in New York. That was an absolute clinic. When you factor in his age and the speed that he’s doing it at now, it’s laughable. It’s hard to guard because he’s so crafty."
Even Rondo had to give it up for Nash. Interesting to see the perception around the league, especially amongst the chorus of ‘trade him’ around here.
He's so close to achieving another 50-40-90 club

I’ve talked to lifelong Celtics fans about Rivers and they never give him praise. Before the Celtics acquired Allen and KG he was in line to get fired. Now he is 2nd longest tenured coach. People change and get better at their jobs, but let’s see how well he does now that the East is strong and his HOFers don’t carry the team.

Haha missed that tidbit
I did discover from watching the Knicks broadcast that Riley had his pants ripped in the scuffle. The funniest part is how the toughest players didn’t really fight: Barkley, Ainge, Mason, Ewing, Oakley. Interesting factoid, Greg Anthony attempted to get back on the court in a different shirt after he was tossed to get a little payback, but was stopped by security.

It's a little late to mentioned this, but I wanted to say this on the Knicks thread...
I can’t help but think that if we never traded Dragic, that we would still have the Orlando 1st pick. We could have used that to get Shumpert, who seems to be playing better than Price or Telfair (so far). Not sure if he’s a better defender than price since I’ve only seen him play twice. So we could have had Morris and Shumpert AND Dragic who I would rather have than Telfair any day, and doesn’t sign contracts to go to a different country…he was this one guy that used to be good but then got injured. Sad days for us.
Twitter: @FredLegittt
You are assuming...
Suns draft well. Not worth agonizing over because they have sucked in the draft ever since Sarver became owner. Hopefully Morris is a sign they are turning a corner.
The Suns passed on Deandre Jordan in favor of a college backup Lopez when everybody thought they would take Jordan because “he had a bad workout.”

Tough call
Because logic would say that Suns would have drafted a backup PG years ago and groomed him to start, but they never did. Also if they were high Shumpert why not draft him at #14? It’s only 3 spots difference. The true steal of the draft thus far is Norris Cole.
Shumpert does look solid though. After missing out on Curry and Rubio, the Knicks finally drafted a quality PG.

I get what gentry is doing. Yeah why not let someone else chase after the the speedsters on every team. If we could clone Hill we would. But since we can’t price is the perfect little pesky defensive compliment to Nash. I want Rondo to play so we can get the true results of our rotation changes.
I say bring Frye and Lopez in to make the hard fouls when needed.
by Wolf Make-Shift on Jan 20, 2012 12:50 PM MST reply actions
Rondo will play
It was a bad fall, but having an aching wrist doesn’t keep you from stat padding assists or gambling on steals. Plus you gotta factor in that PGs always get amped to play against Nash.
Garnett is the dirtiest player of his generation. His favorite move is to give you a cheap shot in the back or stomach when you’ve already beaten the team for a layup or dunk because the ref rarely calls a foul at this moment. If you’ve ever see him live you will see twice as many dirty plays as on TV. He tries to act tough, but really is just a sucker punch artist.

At least one other still needs to be chosen.. but who? Kevin Martin (not shooting well), Eric Gordon (after missing a month of a short season), Kyle Lowry, Tony Parker, Ricky Rubio, Ty Lawson, Steph Curry, Monta Ellis (shooting horribly)?
Ginobili will still be injured and Deron Williams switched to the east. If Nash stays healthy, he’ll be in.
BAMF goes HAM.
Rubio has more votes than Nash
Even Clippers were clapping for him tonight. Let’s hope his sucky 3 quarters will change people’s minds.

The fans votes won't matter.. they're already choosing Kobe and CP3 to start
I’m talking about the coaches voting for reserves.
BAMF goes HAM.
Ohh I didn't know coach votes for reserve. How does it work?
Do every coach on the west vote for the reserve for the west and vice versa for the east?

I hate to be "that guy"
But there wasn’t an All-Star game in 1999……lockout.
OK I was kidding…I love to be “that guy”
No longer trying to light Vince Carter on fire.

You are the very definition of "that guy".
Mr. President.
Sir.

Let's get this win!
Hopefully, Steve Nash (21.8 PPG, 11.3 APG, 63% FG, 66.7% 3P over the last 4) and Marcin Gortat (16.5 PPG, 12.3 RPG, 1.5 BPG over the last 6) can continue the trends, Grant can play like the BAMF he was last game, and Frye can play like Channing and not Chandler.
Also, nice job Jim. I love that you threw conbuilding into the radio interview.. great use of BSOTS jargon.
BAMF goes HAM.
BTW I got shirts older than Euty
Makes a guy feel v. old. Sheesh.
I predict Dudz finds his stroke tonight, and pumps in...27.

Jim, you sound far less curmudgeonly than I thought you would
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
I was at that game last year.
Lotta celtic fans there including my gf who bought me the tickets for x-mas. When KG sack tapped frye one of the celtic fans shouted “but it was all ball”. Not bad..
