Phoenix Suns At Dallas Mavericks Game Preview: The Road Home

If it can be said that a 6-9 team is on a hot streak, then the Phoenix Suns appear to be on the verge of one. Tonight, the Suns will look to extend their road game winning streak to three when they take on the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center at 6:30pm MST.

The Phoenix Suns lost the first two games of their current road trip to the San Antonio Spurs without Manu Gilnobli, and then to Chicago Bulls without Derrick Rose. But just when it looked like all hope was lost, the Suns came back to life with two promising, consecutive road wins against the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics, and now sit at 2-2 over the last four games. The Suns have now turned what looked like a very treacherous five game road series into what could end up as a winning trip, depending on how they finish tonight against the Dallas Mavericks.

Also, in what should be great news, Dirk Nowitzki will not play in tonight's game as he continues to sit out for what will be a four game hiatus to work on conditioning and rehabbing a sore knee. However, the last two teams the Suns played minus one of their star players they lost (see above), so the Suns cannot rely on this alone to help them.

Instead, if the Suns hope to finish off their road trip with a win against Dallas before returning back home to play the Toronto Raptors tomorrow, the Suns will need to keep their energy and intensity high and continue to play great defense like they did over their last two games. The Mavericks are still a dangerous team even when Dirk-less, so the Suns need to come out strong and keep the pressure on throughout the game.

Read on for more analysis after the jump...

The Dallas Mavericks will be looking for their seventh straight home win and their ninth consecutive victory against the Phoenix Suns tonight. Without Nowitzki, the Mavericks will instead start Lamar Odom in his place at the Power Forward position. Dirk was held out against the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday and Lamar Odom played very well in his absence, scoring 16pts to help the Mavericks win 83-81. Oh, and Vince Carter will also be sitting out tonight's game as well with a sprained foot...In case you wanted to know.

Key Match-ups:

  • Steve Nash vs. Jason Kidd (Advantage Suns)
  • Ronnie Price vs. Jason Terry (Advantage Mavs)
  • Grant Hill vs. Shawn Marion (Push)
  • Markieff Morris vs. Lamar Odom (Advantage Mavs)
  • Marcin Gortat vs. Brendan Haywood (Strong Advantage Suns)
  • Suns Bench vs. Mavs Bench (Advantage Suns)

Keys to a Suns' win:

  • Feed the Beast! - Marcin Gortat has been averaging 17.6 points over his last seven games, and the Suns will need to use his match-up advantage over Brendan Haywood early and often to help get their team going on offense.
  • Defense! - The Suns have held their last two opponents to 81 and 77 respectively, and they will need to continue this trend again tonight if they hope to get a win in Dallas.
  • No Fly Zone - In the Mavericks' last win against Phoenix, Jason Terry got loose for 18 points, including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc. Without Dirk, the JET could very well be the most dangerous player on the court tonight. The Suns will need to do a better job of keeping track of Terry; both closing out on him and chasing him off the line to prevent him from becoming a factor.
  • Supporting Cast - Finally, the Suns will need to get help from their second unit tonight to help the Suns pull off a victory. While Steve Nash has been fantastic, the Suns can't overuse him before coming back home and playing again tomorrow. Ronnie Price and Sebastian Telfair will both need to do their part, along with the help of Jared Dudley and Channing Frye who have joined the second unit to help give it a boost.

This is a winnable game for the Suns who can finish off this very tough road trip with a record of 3-2, if they can defeat the Mavericks tonight! How bad do they want it? Time will tell.

We are so lucky

Roseless
Rondoless
Dirkless
Manuless

And still we lost 2 of them, if we wanna be a playoff team we need to seize the opportunities we have, Let’s bring a W home

7-9 GO!

*Key Points:

Hold Jason Terry to a 15 points game
Hold Odom offensive rebounds and easy baskets
Put Price on Jkidd
Watchout for Rodrigue, not a season high for him, should do it.

roses are red violets are blue, Michael Redd is coming for you!

Nooooo!!!!

Price needs to shadow Terry!!! All game!
And I would think Hill could have a run against Odom. We really need those two guys to be shut down on offense.

Gortat might have a great night against Haywood IF he can hit his mid-range shot. Haywood is very slow – if he follows Marcin outside the lane good things will happen for the suns.

Feed the cutter!!!

by Piotr Szczesniak on Jan 23, 2012 6:04 AM MST up reply actions

If Gortat manages to hit mid-range shots tonight driving to the lane would be easy as hell

Know that i realize it, Price on Terry sounds fine and Kidd has slow down a lot this year. Good call. I would also try Dudz on Terry.

by Lino Canaan on Jan 23, 2012 6:33 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

Terry is too quick for Dudz...Let's keep Price or Shannon Brown on him...

IF those guys ain’t working, Maybe we try the BAMF….

Let's do this...!

by Daryl Ray on Jan 23, 2012 6:58 AM MST up reply actions

Exactly...

Price and Brown can both handle Terry. I would actually keep BAMF on Marion or Odom if need be.

by 7footer on Jan 23, 2012 10:45 AM MST up reply actions

I'd want BAMF to negate Marion and Keef to negate Odom.

I think the key is to take Frye out of there early and often cause if I remember correctly Odom absolutely killed him last time we played these mavs

I we rely on Morris solely to slow down Odom...

We are toast…Can’t put that kind of expectation on him. Frye and Gortat need to pack a lunch and come out to defend this guy…With Dirk out, You know who they are going to the post…

Let's do this...!

by Daryl Ray on Jan 23, 2012 12:58 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, I'd like to see Grant on Odom.

If Morris cam keep Marion off the boards and not lose him on backdoor cuts, we should be fine.

I agree, Haywood is a very good low post / weak side defender.

And against our frontcourt, he’s going to be a thorn in our side, racking up offensive rebounds and putbacks.

Good Preview Big Guy as always...(Previews are your calling..!)

With Nowitzki, I think this one is a no-brainer for Dallas at home…Without him, we have a good chance and we need to seisze it. For me, Jason Terry is the one guy that can burn us. He needs to be the focal point at all times on Defense. We need to keep a guy like Price or Brown on the court at all timnes just to deal with him.

The only other offensive threat, Lamar Odom is just too passive to be a major concern. I’d let Gortat/Lopez deal with all night one-on-one and go from there. We hold Lamar to 15 & 10, and Terry to under 18, then that’s a good night for us and I think we win. We shouldn’t worry unncesarily about the others as Kidd is just a shadow of his former self, VC is not a threat unless he feels motivated to get us back for releasing him..but, I doubt it.. .Marion will get his garbage points and boards and it’s up to the Suns to do the rest…

Suns 91, Mavs 85….

Keys to the game:

1. Limit Terry – an entire evening of Price/BAMF should do the trick. It would be nice to see Price handle him like he handled Allen, this would give BAMF some rest on defense which takes us to

2. Production from wings. SteveHammer as good as it might be the last 5 games is not enough. We need steady 20-30 PPG from our 2 and 3. Dudley has been doing his thing of late but hopefully this is the game when BAMF explodes on offense as he pretty much won’t have the other teram’s biggest threat to cover on the other end. This is why I preach

3. Frye/Gortat on Odom. Haywood is bad on offense. Odom is smart – he will eat our rookie for breakfast. As good as Morris has been he is still a very naive defender. Odom would probably get the best of him with his mixture of outside shhoting and driving inside. I would much rather he stuck with Marion – he is very good on the boards and might effectively take Marion out of his element.

4. Go inside! – let’s not settle for 3’s! let’s drive inside with all we got – Brown/Gortat/Morris. We need to take it to this thin Dallas lineup.

5. IMO the most important for this game: play 1-on-1 defense!!!! Especially inside. Nothing gets Dallas going like open 3’s. So what if Odom abuses our PF once in a while. Let’s try to stay in front of our guys and stop hedging so much. Dallas without Nowitzki has noone commanding a double team. This way if they make shots, at least they are contested.

Feed the cutter!!!

I think all Suns know how to play.

But the problem is Our Suns. They have a chance to win with Champinship holder. They need the same attitude like they played with Boston and New York. If they’ll play this way , I’ m 95 % sure they win. All is in their hands.
For me it doesn’t matter that Nowitzki won’t play tonight. Many teams have injuries problem. This short season will bring us more surprises .

Just want to point out that no team has absolutely owned the suns

in the last few years more than Dallas. This has been a string of some of the most depressing and humiliating losses. And Lamar Odom also seems to save his best work for the suns, as does Jason Terry. So while no Dirk is a plus, this one will be no piece of cake.

I think the morst important thing is the Suns secure their shoes strings. They’re not going to get it done with shoe laces trailing them like a cop chasing DMX on the 101.

Secondly

Keep Nash’s fingers moist. It should be a team effort to lick his fingers after every possesion. Yes, it maybe a little unorthadox but you do what it takes to win.

High fives, low fives, butt-slaps, sweaty hugs, moist fingers, suits, shoe-laces...

whatever it takes to keep Mr. Nash happy.

He has to play with all that stringy hair too.

I think we need our speedy guys (Price and to a lesser extent Telly and Brown) on the court to outrun the Mavs – and to allow Steve to focus on offense and rest up for crunch time. Frye is overdue for a bunch of 3’s. Hmmm. Yes. I’m sensing a BAMF scoring outbreak if he’s not guarding Odom all night. Odom worries me. He’s always a match-up problem. Good passer too.
I boldly predict another grinding W. Suns 93 Mavs 86. Then we whup the lowly Raptors and we got us some mo-mentum.
Gooo you Suuuns!!

I think that a lot of us around here
The Mavericks are still a dangerous team even when Dirk-less

felt the Mavericks were sort of Dirk-less well before Nowitzki’s recent injury.

It was only called the mildly irritated house on McDowell until I showed up.

The best part of this game...

is that there is no chance of a VC “air motorcycle vroom vroom” or Dirk sticking his tongue out after a fade away jumper. There still might be a Jason Terry imaginary airplane ride, Delonte West’s face, and Mark Cuban’s broski designed Mavs football jersey but you can’t have everything go your way.

Nine losses in a row!? That’s downright embarrassing. Good thing I’ve never seen or met a Mavs fan or they would be talking some smack.

Suns can’t underestimate Odom, West, or Marion. They have stepped up nicely this season at various times, Odom just recently. I think the key to a Suns win will be keeping Beabois from going off.

If we can go all game without seeing the JET airplane...

I’ll be a very happy camper. He lit us up from beyond the arc last game, we can’t let him do that to us again.

by 7footer on Jan 23, 2012 1:34 PM MST reply actions

Close enough

Gonna be tough to keep the airplane from coming out. Two jumpers in a row and a Suns timeout and here it comes.

Dumbest celebration ritual ever conceived on an NBA court?

It'd be funny

if he runs away doing the jet after a three and someone huge in the other team like Dejuan Blair does the jet too and tackles him…I think that’s worth getting ejected for.

The two keys for tonight.

Keep Odom of the boards and try not to turn Terry into Kobe Bryant.

JET is a giant douche.

And I’m hoping he insults us in any interviews he gives tonight . Because the last time he talked smack, we freakin’ punched back. Let’s beat these jerks.

Suns need to rectify this week with a win...

Still pissed about the niners game last night. We need Redd to score big for us tonight. Horus has to own the paint. Also need Chilly to attack the basket more.

Not having Tedd Ginn Jr. hurt.

Big time.

It’d be nice to have Redd scoring well for us in this game but it’s probably not absolutely necessary.

by lixuec on Jan 23, 2012 4:34 PM MST up reply actions

does anyone know why Redd hasnt played?

is he still out of shape or does gentry feel he doesn’t need him

by miketheboss on Jan 23, 2012 4:45 PM MST reply actions

I am guessing

It is a conditioning thing, and lack of practice with the team to know any of the plays and such. Thats a bad combo, and I can understand why they are just letting him sit for the moment.

ya thats true

but the only way he will get accustomed to the team when there is no practice’s is to play. i could understand if he was just a role player but he has the potential to be a huge game changer. Gentry should take the risk of losing a few to get Redd involved.

by miketheboss on Jan 23, 2012 5:06 PM MST up reply actions

He's just not ready yet.

Not in shape. It was obvious in his play.

However, the last two teams the Suns played minus one of their star players they lost (see above), so the Suns cannot rely on this alone to help them.

You forgot the Rondoless Celtics, but your point still stands.

Also, I just wanted to say night classes suck. I’m stuck in here form 6-9. Hopefully I can join you to see the end of the game after class. 7:30 start + 2.5 hours = 10:00 finish, which means I might be able to watch a good 45 minutes of it. Hopefully the Suns are up 20 by then.

I’m in that prison on most Mon-Wed nights. Tally uncalled for by my profs who don’t want to teach during the day.

Even worse,

my adviser (who teaches the class) taught it during the day first semester. But the school wouldn’t let him do it this semester. So I’m stuck with a different teacher at night.

Suns have been using defense as well as (more) fast-break buckets

in combination, and this seems to be a good strategy.

1) rebound the ball, or force turnover
2) push the ball up the floor, good things happen
