Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

There has been much discussion on whether or not we should have offered Amare a max guaranteed deal. There are some here that think so, but many saw it as a smart move. In just his second year there has a been a severe drop in productivity. While some of his effectiveness may return, at 29, he is most likely not going to get any of his lost athleticism. We could make the argument that a title run last year may have been worth the remaining 4 year 80 million dollar cap hit we would have now. I don't know about you, but Sarver is looking smarter and smarter as times goes by.

there are so many variables at play in Amare's situation right now,

but wbatever the case, it’s ludicrous to give Robert Sarver the benefit of the doubt.

Why not?

He estimated Amare’s future value to the team, and decided that it wasn’t worth $100M. He was right.

Amare wasn’t as big a part of the Suns’ 2010 run as people made him out to be. That year, when Nash was on the court, we played about the same with or without Amare. Same with Nash off the court. The next year, when we started our decline, again Nash was doing fine without Stoudemire for most of the year. The problem was our bench just went to hell in 2011, especially Dragic.

When Stoudemire got outrebounded by Nash in two 2010 WCF games against the Lakers, that was the last straw: No longer could I justify him as a $20M/yr player.

I have always been against signing him for the max contract guaranteed and believed the contract they offered him was very reasonable. Amare wanted the money and a change of scenery, and he got it.

We thought Amar'e was on the decline in 08-09 because his stats were down

However, that was because Shaq was made the #1 option. Amar’e isn’t a good defender or rebounder, so if he’s not your #1 option on offense, you’re not going to get much out of that guy. Not only is he not the #1 option in New York, but he doesn’t have a decent PG feeding him the ball either. There is no play maker on that team. Amar’e Stoudemire isn’t on the decline. He’s in the worst possible system he could be in. It doesn’t take advantage of his strengths at all and so he becomes a 17 and 7 guy.

He looks old to me

All the indicators of athleticism are gone as well, like blocks and steals. HE looks really old.
