Phoenix Suns at Dallas Mavericks Game Preview: Keep it Rolling!

Keep it Nashty!

After a very satisfying win over the Golden State Warriors at home on Monday, the Phoenix Suns will attempt to keep their momentum going as they visit the Dallas Mavericks on the road tonight at 6:30pm MST.

As it stands now, The Suns (2-3) and the Mavericks (2-4) have very similar records...but sometimes stats can be deceiving.

The Suns have losses against the New Orleans Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Only the Thunder are currently considered to be a legit contender. Their best win so far was Monday's game against the Golden State Warriors who are currently 2-3 as well.

On the other hand, the Mavericks' four losses have come against the Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, OKC Thunder, and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Of all of those teams they lost to, only the Timberwolves could be considered a non-contending opponent at this point (although many consider them at least a borderline playoff team), and their most recent win against the Thunder also shows the Mavericks still have the firepower to bring down even the most talented of teams.

But all hope is not lost...

If there is one thing we know for sure about the Suns, it's that as Steve Nash goes, so goes the team. So it should be no surprise that Nash's best overall game so far this season was also the team's best game, and the only game they have been able to crack the century mark offensively in thus far as well. In that last game against the Warriors, Nash scored 21 points and dished out 9 assists while committing only two turnovers...and not surprisingly, the starting unit finally outplayed the bench. Coincidence? I think not.

If the Suns are going to be able to pull out an upset win in Dallas tonight, this is exactly the type of performance the Suns are going to need once more from their aging two-time MVP. In addition, there are other areas of strength that the Suns must capitalize on and use to their advantage if they are going to get a win in Dallas.

Read on after the jump for a breakdown of what to expect...

Star-divide

After a slow start to the season against some fairly tough opponents, the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks have seemingly begun to pick up steam, especially with their most recent win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night. Despite their record the Dallas Mavericks are still chock full of talent and should still be considered one of the odds on favorites to make it back to the NBA Finals. While Dallas lost their solidifying force in the post, Tyson Chandler, in free agency to the Knicks, and their spark-plug off the bench, J.J. Barea, in free agency to the Timberwolves, they kept their core of talent in Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, Jason Kidd, and Shawn Marion, and have also acquired some other talented additions such as Lamar Odom and Vince Carter (don't laugh).

So how do the Suns match-up with the Mavs?

For one, Steve Nash and Jason Kidd are both experienced point guards who can shoot the ball and find the open shooter. Nash has an edge offensively while Kidd has the edge defensively. This one's a wash.

Next we have Jared Dudley vs. Jason Terry at the two guard. Delonte West is technically the starter but Terry gets the bulk of the minutes and West also helps back up Kidd at the point. Dudley is a very good player all around but Terry brings instant offense, speed, and clutch shooting. Advantage Mavs.

At small forward we have Grant Hill vs. Shawn Marion. Both of these players are strong defensively and decent rebounders for their position. On offense, Grant is a better shooter while Marion has more athleticism, but both can score. This one's a wash

The power forward position matches Channing Frye up against Dirk Nowitzki. This one's not even close..Neither are great defenders but Dirk is one of the best scorers in the league while Channing is currently shooting 23% from the field and struggling to find his shot. Strong advantage Mavs

Marcin Gortat and Brendan Haywood will compete at the starting center position. Gortat has been impeded by a fractured right thumb, but he's still averaging 9.2 points, 5.8 rbs, and 1.6 blks in approximately 22 min a game. Haywood on the other hand is averaging 5.2 pts, 5.7 rbs, and 1.0 blks in approximately 19 minutes a game. Gortat is simply a better player than Haywood both offensively and defensively, even with a broken thumb. Advantage Suns.

As for the bench, we will see Hakim Warrick, Markieff Morris, Robin Lopez, Shannon Brown, and Ronnie Price vs. Lamar Odom, Vince Carter, Delonte West, and Ian Mahinmi. Believe it or not, Vince Carter has actualy been playing very well for Dallas thus far (we'll see how he holds up as the season progresses though). Still, when the Suns' bench is playing well they can be very effective. Slight advantage Suns.

So final count we have things pretty even overall. However, the advantage of Dirk Novitzki over Channing Frye is a substantial one, and if the Suns want to be able to win this game I believe they will need some help from some key players and positions.

As I mentioned above, if Steve Nash is on then this team can still compete with anyone. The Suns will need MVSteve to show up with guns a blazing tonight if they are going to have a chance.

Secondly, the Suns need to fully utilize their biggest advantage which I believe is at the center position. Gortat and Lopez are a much better tandem than Haywood and Mahinmi...and if the Suns can find a way to score early and often in the paint while also grabbing more rebounds and playing solid defensively, they could dominate in the paint offensively; and force Dallas into low percentage shots while not allowing second-chance opportunities.

And lastly, they will need some additional scoring off the bench. Hakim Warrick and Markeiff Morris have been very productive thus far, and we will need their best along with some additional production hopefully from Shannon Brown or Ronnie Price tonight to match the likes of Terry, Odom, and Carter. If the Suns can get quality play from Nash, Gortat/Lopez, and their bench, I believe the Suns have a good chance to pull out an upset in Dallas tonight.

Guarding Dirk

Is pointless, let him have his 30 points night and focus on Terry and Marion, also watch out for Odom and we should be fine, i hope AG realize that and plays Grant Hill on someone else.

Good preview big guy...

A lot of this matchup has to do with how the Suns contain Dirk and which Shawn Marion shows up to play. I think we can beat Dallas by just playing fundamental defense and executing on offense. However, simply relying on Grant Hill to guard Nowitzki isn’t going to work. Dudley won’t work either—One of our big guys is going to have to pull-up their socks and do some dirty work…Who’s it gonna be…? Gortat..? Rolo…? Morris….? Its gotta be one of them because I don’t think Frye or Warrick can stop Dirk in their dreams…

Nevertheless, i am predicting a Suns win tonight….Final Score: Suns 102, Mavs 95

Marion, Odom, Terry and Haywood

If Grant Hill can play good defense on Marion and Dudley can minimize the damage that Terry will inflict, Gortat will have to take on Haywood and that seems very unlikely, same for our bench to defend Odom, so let´s just hope those two have an awful night and we got it.

Tough game

Nice preview, but the interesting thin about the mavs is that one on one matchups mean a bit less than some other teams because the sum is larger than the parts when they are playing well. So they are always dangerous. Hopefully. Evacuee they have won a couple now, they will take us lightly. But, with them at home, I wouldn’t count on it.

I’m not sure I’d say VC is playing ‘well’ for them. After two games they put him as coming off the bench. He did hit a clutch 3 for them against OkC, but his pER is about a 7 or so. However, will VC try to torch an old team like he did to TOR last year? If he does, the bench advantage could be theirs too (because of Odom as well).

Hope our shots are falling and we see our best game thus far!

This was a great preview

except for the part where you say Steve Nash and Jason Kidd are a wash. At this point in their careers, Steve Nash is clearly the better player. Kidd isn’t even an average defender anymore and gets torched by opposing points night in, night out. I’m not saying Nash is a better defender, but he has been holding his own. And what Nash brings to the table offensively is so much more than what Kidd brings, obviously. Pretty much the only thing Kidd is better at than Nash is at this point is rebounding.

I can see us having an advantage at center even though rolo and gortat have injuries. They should be able to outplay haywood and mahimi(even though mahimi’s been playing well.) We can win, but our bench has to really give us a lift.

Shannon brown and ronnie price will have to play at their best level possible to offset kidd and terry. Maybe gentry can use terry’s old comment a couple season’s back about the suns not being able to play any defense as a motivator.

I expect carter to try and come out and make a statement but fail at doing so. If we can somehow win tonight in dallas against a hot mavericks team, we should have enough confidence to beat anybody and then focus on the playoffs.

If we lose, just try and focus on whatever positives we can take from it and move forward.

Nick was pretty good in his time at florida, he’s not super athletic but he is smart, a creative playmaker and a solid ball-handler.

Unfortunately we already have price and telfair behind nash and there really isn’t any room for nick on this team right now. But i do like his intangibles.

Some good info about Marcin’s thumb – http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/03/marcin-gortat-injury-update-thumb-improving-hopes-to-play-without-brace-in-the-next-couple-of-days/

"The thumb is doing well, but the [bad] part is the plastic stuff on my thumb," Gortat told NBCSports.com. "The good news is that I just got an X-ray right now, a couple of minutes after the game [2 January, against Warriors], and the X-ray looks really good so there’s a big possibility that in the next couple of days I can take it off, and finally, I’m going to be able to play 100 percent and actually catch the ball and maybe get a rebound.

"I’m really excited that finally I’m going to get this chance to play normal, and actually that will be the start of my season, from that point."

It's important for Frye to hit three's tonight.

Not so much for the points scored or lift it brings to spirits, but to establish himself as an outside threat enough to bring Dirk out of the paint, and let our bigs go to town on their bigs. Same goes for Keif when he’s at the four. Couple early threes is all it would take.

Through five games the Suns....

Still haven’t had two starters score over 15 points in a game.
Still haven’t shot over 45% from the field.
Still haven’t scored more than 25 points in the first quarter.
Still haven’t led after the first quarter.
(the still haven’t list could grow from here)

The scoring has been creeping up (83, 93, 97, 102) and at some point the Suns will reverse these trends. Here’s hoping tonight qualifies as some point. The starter need to bring more to the table.

It would be a great boon if the Suns could find a way to get above .500 before they embark on the parlous 5 game trip starting on Jan. 15th. To do so they will have to navigate this stretch at 4-2.

@ Dallas
Portland
Milwaukee
@ LA Lakers
Cleveland
NJ

Not impossible. Drop 10-12 threes on the Dirks tonight and they could be well on their way. The Suns will need to be above .500 to compete for a playoff spot. A 6-10 start won’t help. Getting back to even tonight is important. Otherwise the Suns could be facing a hot Portland team with the less than desirable prospect of being 2-5 staring them in the mirror.

It was only called the mildly irritated house on McDowell until I showed up.

by Jim Coughenour on Jan 4, 2012 12:34 PM MST reply actions

All those are good still haven'ts

One I would definitely add is get hot from the land of Three. We are shooting 27 percent and have at best been lukewarm against the warriors. And that was for half a quarter. If this happens tonight (and we are do) then this is a very winnable game.

Fan of the TEAM not a player.

Based on what I've seen so far...

we should’ve tried to sign T-Mac in the offseason to a one-year vet contract. It’s too bad. We could’ve used a shooting guard of his caliber. He’s certainly more skilled than Michael Redd.

Once you go Nash, you won't wanna go back.

I wouldn't mind that

But we should have just signed a good SG instead of Telfair and Brown.

T-Mac had an outstanding game

but it’s probably too soon to declare the signing a winner.

Of course, we’re in the same boat with Redd, who (understandably) has yet to succeed.

Go Suns!!

Mavs are always tough though. We need a whole bunch of things to go well to get the W. Biggest problem has been the shooting (see Frye). We’re missing at a v. high rate, even when wide open. Hence the weirdly low scoring. Wild card? I think Brown could be a difference maker once he figures out team play. I nominate BAMF to guard Dirk. For once our bigs are a strong suit. We need them to show up. I liked the overall energy vs. Golden State. Let’s hope we find that again – and finish each half well for a change.
VC and Terry on the same team? Ugh. Mavs are becoming easy to hate. I say they’re goin’ doooown (extra deep voice)!

by Van2010 on Jan 4, 2012 1:46 PM MST reply actions

You know, I think I like Grant guarding Dirk too. It’s a bit of a danger in the post, but help defense isn’t far away, and height doesn’t much matter when Dirk’s launching fadeaways. He’d probably be more effective than Frye/Lopez/Gortat guarding Dirk’s mid and long range game.

But it really depends on available matchups at any given time.

borderline adequate

by waxmonkey on Jan 4, 2012 3:30 PM MST up reply actions

we always work out the kinks against dallas

I think maybe its because no matter who our opposition is, we play to their talent level and not our own. Dallas is consistently a contender and always plays solid ball. Whenever we seem to be in a funk, we play Dallas, and all of a sudden we’re playing coherent basketball again. It would be nice to get a W against the champs. It’ll certainly boost team confidence. Ya know what else will boost team confidence? Making shots *cough*frye*cough*
