Portland Trail Blazers at Phoenix Suns Game Preview: More Energy, Hustle
After a disappointing start to the season, the Phoenix Suns looked like they were starting to come together after racking up two wins against the New Orleans Hornets and the Golden State Warriors. The Suns then played against the Dallas Mavericks Wednesday in a game that they lost due to lack of hustle and ability to take care of the ball.
Tonight the Suns return to Phoenix to face another likely Western Conference playoff team, the Portland Trailblazers, in an attempt to regain their momentum. This will not be easy however, as the Trailblazers are currently (5-1) after an impressive win against the Lakers last night. Portland has already notched wins against some other pretty tough opponents as well, including the Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Denver Nuggets, all of whom the Suns have already lost to. If the Suns are going to get a much needed win tonight, they will have to come out firing on all cylinders from the start, and maintain their energy and hustle throughout the game.
Will the Suns have what it takes to get a win against Portland tonight? Who knows...but read on anyway as I attempt to breakdown some of the keys for tonight's match-up.
Key Match-ups:
PG - Steve Nash vs. Raymond Felton:
What jumps out at me when looking at this is how Nash and Felton are performing almost equally so far at least on offense. This has been a fairly good start to the season for Felton while Nash has struggled at times. However, Felton puts forth a much more consistent defensive effort than Nash though, and his larger frame also helps him in this regard. Still, Felton has to play at his best to equal Nash's average performances. When Nash is on his game there is no way Felton can handle him. Advantage Suns
SG - Jared Dudley vs. Wesley Matthews:
Wesley Matthews and Jared Dudley are both very similar type of players. Neither one of them is flashy or athletic, but their smart play and blue-collar hustle are very important to each of their respective teams. Unfortunately, Matthews has been outplaying Dudley so far this season in nearly every category. Dudley hasn't been able to get himself in rhythm yet while Matthews already appears to be in mid-season form. Advantage Blazers
SF - Grant Hill vs. Gerald Wallace
Grant Hill is still a valuable part of the Suns team and the best all-around talent on the roster. However, Grant has had a very slow start to the season...partly due to an injured right knee in training camp that he hasn't yet fully recovered from, and partly because of dare I say, age? Gerald Wallace is a lot like Grant Hill in that he's a younger version of the same type of player who uses his body almost recklessly at times and always competes. Wallace is off to a good start this year while Grant is still trying to get his legs under him. Advantage Blazers
PF - Channing Frye vs. Lamarcus Aldridge
Channing Frye has been struggling to play a consistent role in the Suns offense while Lamarcus has been sensational. Frye has improved his rebounding, but when he's only shooting 20% from behind the arc he's more of a liability than an asset. Frye has to find a way to be more productive on offense when his shot isn't falling. So far this match-up isn't even close. Strong Advantage Blazers
C - Marcin Gortat vs. Marcus Camby
Marcin Gortat has been one of the lone bright spots for the Suns so far this season. Despite playing with a broken right thumb, Gortat has been the most consistent player on both offense and defense throughout the first five games, and he seems to be getting the hang of playing better with his splint that should be coming off any day now. Camby has still been a very good rebounder and a good defender for the Blazers, but his offense hasn't been up to par. Gortat has to play strong inside to make sure Camby doesn't get his hands on the rebounds, and as long as he can continue to score at a high percentage, This should be an area of strength for the Suns in tonight's game. Advantage Suns
The tale of the tape shows the Blazers have the advantage in this game overall, and I would agree. This doesn't mean that the Suns can't win, they certainly can, but they will have to show significant improvements in their offense tonight if they are going to get this victory. Not only that, they definitely need to increase their energy and effort and play with more consistency in this regard.
The biggest x-factor for the Suns is their bench which has been one of the bright spots on the team; and aside from Jamal Crawford (who has played very well), the Blazers do not have much depth that they can rely on. For the Suns, the play of rookie Markieff Morris, Hakim Warrick, and Robin Lopez have helped this team win games and stay competitive even in most of their defeats. All three of these players had sub-standard performances in their last game vs. the Mavericks, and the Suns will need them to have bounce-back performances against the Blazers if the Suns hope to win tonight. The Suns should also be helped by the fact that Portland is playing a back-to-back.
So far, this Suns team has shown improved defense and rebounding at times, so they should be ok in that department as long as they are playing with energy. However, this team hasn't shown they can consistently maintain an effective, high-scoring offense yet; even though that was the one thing that this team was known for in prior seasons. The improved defense is great, but if the Suns can't get back to doing what they do best, which is scoring more than the other team, then they will have a rough road ahead of them.

I think this should be a “regress to the mean” game, where we shoot better, and Portland come back to the pack a little. I think this’ll be a super close game, and I hope Frye hits at a better rate today.
Plus this is a
“revenge” game for Frye against his old team. Here’s to hoping he breaks out tonight and is the key to a Suns win

As long as he only shoots 6 or 7
And not 12, that sounds reasonable :)
I think we can match up fairly close with theis team with one exception...
They are a very good rebounding team…We’ve got to have maximum effort in that area or they might pull down 20 or more offensive rebounds just as the Mavs did to us. If that happens , Game Over. However, if we can stay close to them on the boards, We don’t lelet Gerald Wallace get out on the wings, and we shoot halfway decent, the homecourt advantage and our bench should see the day. I predict the Suns win in a squeaker on tonight…
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....! BTW, If positivity is a crime, I plead guilty by reason of T-Bird...!

If the Mavs performance is bettered, with better rebounding and fewer turnovers, I can see a win. That’s assuming Portland will be a bit knackered after last night though.

Whole team should make best performance to win with Blazers.
Portland at this moment is nr 2-3 in Conference.
PTL has always given us a bit of trouble
I can see this being a really tough game, and I look for Morris to keep improving and we’ll see how it goes. Nash could have trouble if he can;t get rid of the ball- teams will start collapsing defensively on him if the other guys aren;t stepping up.

Sure, we need more talent...
but this is the team we have going onto the court tonight, and if we’re going to have a chance of winning against Portland tonight they will need to play with much more energy and hustle than they showed in the loss to Dallas. The game against the Mavericks was a winnable game for the Suns, but they got out-hustled on the boards, played sloppy, and didn’t get much help from the bench.
Look at the Spurs…they are even older than the Suns, just lost one of their best players for a couple of months, and still handed Dallas a loss last night to improve their record to 6-2.
+1
My only regret is that I have only one “rec” to give on behalf of this comment.

i have an odd hatred for the blazers
odd because, on paper at least, they seem less despicable than classic bad guys like the lakers, celtics, and spurs.
maybe it’s because the city of Portland seems to be populated entirely by pretentious, self-righteous, middle-to-upper-income white people. maybe it’s because blazers and blazer fans always seem to look down their noses at us (sort of like the Pawnee-Eagleton rivalry in “Parks and Rec” – where we’re Pawnee).
Please win this one, Suns.

I definately do not appreciate and agree with this comment. We are a very progressive city filled with useful non-profits to help the homeless, small business owners, and most importlandly underserved youth and thier families. Like most large cities, the majority of wealth is white money. Yet, these generous open minded people give to thier city and thier productive non-profits. Look up Duncan Cambell founder of Friends of the Children; he’s a great example. The rain can be hard to get use to; but other than that, PDX (not PTL) is an amazing city I’m proud to be a part of.
The Blazers are this cities only major pro sport team, so it makes sence to me that they can be a bit fanatic. Passionate fans bring out passionate play, which is what we need to return to PHX.

Jamal Crawford and Gerald Wallace are going to score 20+ both.
Blind enough to believe on Pudgemonster.
Certainly possible...
Grant Will help shut down Wallace, but I’m sure Warrick will also be matched up against him at times and that will mean trouble. Warrick will have to play very well offensively tonight to make up for his defensive deficiencies.
Jamal Crawford will get his regardless…that guy is just a great player who can do it all from multiple positions.
Bench Grant Hill and put him on Jamal
Is all about diminishing the damage

Putting Warrick on Jamal...?

Dude takes some wild shots. – he is shooting 37.3% for the season. I think people worry too much about volume shooters, when they quite often hurt their team, even when they get 20+.

Watched the LAL/POR game last night
and POR looks freaking sharp…they’re playing at as high of a level as anyone I’ve seen this season and they made the Lakers frontcourt look silly, beating them on the boards easily.
I hope hope Kobe and company wore them out a little last night, otherwise it’s gonna be a long game for us…
I'm a little nervous for the game.
In fact, I’m always nervous when we play the Blazers.
It never seems to go smoothly. Win or lose, playing Portland always seems to be a challenge.
In an effort to keep up my New Year’s Resolution of not being so pessimistic all the time, I’ll just say that this Suns team is capable of whatever they believe themselves to be.
That being said, though, there’s no point in being unrealistic, and this Portland team is good.
When the shots are falling, this team plays completely different. And not just because they’re scoring. It’s like, when they know they’re playing good, every other facet of their game picks up.
So, I’m really hoping that those shots start falling.
Should be an interesting game, regardless. Looking forward to that late start tonight.
Let’s Go Suns.

Desperately seeking W
Another tall order. Blazers are talented. I predict positive bounce back after disappointing performance vs. Mavs. We need to improve rebounding, avoid cheap fouls – and no stinkin turnovers. A whole bunch of 3’s would be nice (hello Channing).
Gooo Suuuns!!
The Blazers have the second best record in the league and one of the best power forwards currently in the league;
if the Suns have any hope of winning tis game they will need to come out firing on all cylinders. That is making all of their open shots and drilling threes consistently as well as giving a 110% effort on defense
I'm Biwinning, I win here and I win there!
Hate to say it, but gotta give the Blazers credit
They lost a star in Brandon Roy’s career being cut short due to injury, lost a #1 overall pick in Greg Oden due to injury and they remain one of the West’s best teams. They are in contention with the Nuggets for the title of the “why can’t the Suns do that?” team for me.
LaMarcus Aldridge was a 2nd overall pick, but they haven’t really assembled this team by sucking bad for high picks. They made several smart moves in acquiring Gerald Wallace, Wesley Matthews and Raymond Felton, none for a huge price tag. This is what the Suns need to do. There is no silver bullet; it will take a series of smart draft picks, trades and free agent signings to bring us back. Let’s hope the trade for Gortat (and dumping of Hedo) plus the drafting of Markieff Morris are the start of that.
As for tonight’s game, our best hope is definitely that the Blazers will be emotionally and physically tired from last night, or that our shooters finally break out. Let’s do this! 3-4 would be so much better than 2-5. In this short season, no time to dig a big hole.

Anyway, the Blazers still aren't contenders.
We’d have to do more than just bring in 3 good role players if we want to contend the following two seasons.
Don't trade Dudley!
Hedo, Childress and Warrick were brought in pre-Babby/Blanks
And how many teams are contenders? Heat, Bulls, Thunder, maybe Mavs. The Heat are heavy favorites. Should every other team say, “aw, screw it?”

Listen
I get what you mean. Teams should never give up. The goal is to be the best they can with what the got.
However, we shouldn’t be settling for anything less than a title or we’ll never get one. We can’t just say, “Alright, lets get a few more good role players and we’ll be a playoff team for the next couple of years!” Our FO made that mistake when they traded Amar’e and replaced him with 3 crappy role players. The goal is to win a championship. Until a FO can actually build a team capable of doing that, then the goal becomes, “lets be the best we can be”. Next off-season, if Nash re-signs, the goal should be to win a title, not just settle for making a bit of noise in the playoffs.
Don't trade Dudley!
By that logic
We should be awful all the time, until we pick a LeBron, Paul, Wade or Shaq.
Our FO made that mistake when they traded Amar’e
Amar’e really hasn’t been great for the NYK, and he is falling part physically.
Look, if the goal is “to win a title” then:
1. Can you make a fanpost thread about that? This is the preview thread, not the “dream of the future” thread.
2. Explain how to win a title – what is required – with some researched evidence.
I would have probably gone a different way with that.
Amar’e really hasn’t been great for the NYK, and he is falling part physically.

Really?
He hasn’t been great – http://www.thenbageek.com/players/compare?utf8=%E2%9C%93&season=&player_ids%5B%5D=222 – he shot poorly, and his D and rebounding have never been good.
That's debatable.
Portland Trailblazers
2004-05 27-55
2005-06 21-61
2006-07 32-50
Players that Portland got as a result of these years:
LaMarcus Aldridge 2006 2nd overall
Brandon Roy 2006 6th overall
Greg Oden 2007 1st overall
In 2005 the Blazers traded the 3rd overall pick (Deron Williams) to Utah. The Blazers got the 6th pick (Martell Webster), the 27th pick (Linas Kleiza), and the 30th pick in the 2006 draft (Joel Freeland). Doh!
In 2006 the Blazers traded the fourth pick (Tyrus Thomas) and some crap (Viktor Khryapa) to Chicago. The Blazers got the 2nd pick (LaMarcus Aldridge) and a 2007 second round pick. The same draft, the Blazers selected Brandon Roy #6 by dealing (essentially) Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a 2008 2nd rounder to Boston/Minnesota.
In 2007 the Blazers decided to take Greg Oden over Kevin Durant with the #1 pick.
In a three year period, the Blazers missed on Deron Williams and Kevin Durant while sandwiching a year which netted them Aldridge and Roy in between. I would say they were pretty heavy players in the draft over a three year span.
I’m sure Blazers fans feel jinxed. If either Roy or Oden was healthy (or especially both) or if they had selected Williams or Durant things would probably be very different (not to say they’re in too bad of shape now).

I'm sure Blazers fans do feel jinxed, but that's my point
They were able to overcome those losses (Roy and Oden) and “d’oh!” decisions (selecting Oden over Durant) by making subsequent shrewd decisions, and now are a solid playoff team. Meanwhile, we lose Amare and go into the crapper. Then lose J-Rich and are unable to find a worthy SG replacement so far. I REALLY don’t want to argue the Amare decision again, but I think the judgment was sound if only we hadn’t mucked up the post-Amare summer of 2010 so badly.

Wallace and Camby are underated
And the sort of pickups FOs with cash make.
We operate on small margins and, unfortunately, we have had bad contracts for a few years. I think our FO has not gotten enough cheap rookie contracts. For 4 years, rookies are cheap, and over paying a Marcus Banks, rather than keepingt cheap rookies (Fernandez and Rondo) really hurt us.
The problem was we always tried to win THAT season – hence Banks signing. If we had taken a lesser rookie and waited a year, we’d have been better off, and we’d have at least one more good young player.
Still, I think we have a team that is interesting, and I can;t wait for this fame – first I will see live this year.
Enjoy the game!

Indeed
Games are always midday, making it tough. Saturday is easier for me.
Perspective.
One could say:
They were able to overcome those losses (Roy and Oden) and "d’oh!" decisions (selecting Oden over Durant) by making subsequent shrewd decisions, and now are a solid playoff team.
Or he could say: They squandered a chance at a dynasty (which was practically laid in their lap) through ineptitude by missing on Deron Williams and Kevin Durant and drafting Webster and two players who became gut wrenching injury cases. They managed to bungle just about everything with the one saving grace exception of Aldridge.
But what I was really offering a counterpoint to was:
LaMarcus Aldridge was a 2nd overall pick, but they haven’t really assembled this team by sucking bad for high picks.
It was only called the mildly irritated house on McDowell until I showed up.

In a way this team was assembled during three years
of bad play resulting in Portland being at the top of the draft.
That’s where the cornerstone came from and the Roy and Oden fiascos have precipitated the exact position Portland is in now. They did suck, had a chance to win big in the lottery, and swung and missed (for the most part).
Despite the tragedy that befell Brandon Roy, if they would have guessed right on the Oden/Durant decision Portland’s fate right now would look very different. Portland’s loss was OKC’s gain (unfortunately for them).

I doubt many teams would've picked Durant over Oden
Oden wasn’t like Roy who had a ton of prior injry history. Oden literally looked like a once in a decade center. Hindsight is 20/20 though.
Also, talent like Roy’s is talent you have to roll the dice on. It was worth it too no matter how we look now.
big men = big problems
just seems like big centers have more risk than the more agile SF, at least I would consider this in picking players
I would have thought it was the opposite
The team’s top 8 players has been built in trades (Wallace, Camby, Felton) and FA (Wesley Matthews, Crawford), and they have only two picks – Batum and Aldridge.
I'm in enemy territory for this game
And if you’ve never been here, it’s exactly as it’s portrayed in Portlandia.
