Phoenix Suns Outrun Portland Trailblazers, Win 102-77

Make excuses about the Portland Trail Blazers being tired if you must, but there was no mistaking the fact that the Phoenix Suns came to play tonight. They came out with tons of energy from the very beginning and never let up or looked back. The Suns got out to an early lead and increased it throughout the game to finish with a blowout win over the Blazers 102-77

Tonight was a return to the ways of old with the run-and-gun offense back in full effect. However, they also managed to do this while still playing effective defense on the other end of the floor to hold the Blazers to under 33% shooting on the night.

This new change in tempo and offensive philosophy was likely something that head coach Alvin Gentry implemented to get the Suns back to playing like themselves again. And man, did it work. This was Suns' basketball, and when they are playing fast and furious everything else seems to fall in place...well, at least it did tonight.

Read on after the jump for more sunshine and roses.

Star-divide

Make no mistake about it...tonight's victory was an impressive one against a very good Portland team who (had) the best record in the West coming into tonight's game (5-1). Sure, they may have been tired after a late game against the Lakers last night, but take nothing away from the Suns either. They earned this win with energy, hustle, tempo, and very good defense...period.

Steve Nash led the team in awesomeness with 17 points, 9 assists, and a +22 for the night. Jared Dudley led the team in scoring with his 18 points, and it was his infectious passion and will that helped get the team out of a short-lived slump to start the second half. The twin towers of Gortat and Lopez also had a very nice night on the boards with 8 and 12 respectively. And last but not least, Markieff Morris put on a clinic from behind the arc and also on the glass notching 13 points and 9 rebounds on the night. Everyone was feeling good and feeling loose tonight...even Shannon Brown had 14 points!

The Suns did almost everything well, that is, as long as Nash was on the court. There's really very little to critique tonight, and I couldn't be happier!

Are there still issues with this Suns' team? Sure. But we've had enough doom and gloom around these parts recently. So for now I would recommend enjoying the heck out of an impressive, quality win...I know I am.

Game Notes:

First Half

Suns running-and-gunning again trying to get their offense going…and it’s working

Suns playing with great hustle and energy so far…Let’s see if they can keep it up!

Nash juked Felton so bad he fell backwards and out of bounds…He’s still got it

BAMF showed Crash who’s still boss with a stuff at the rim!

Suns out to their best start of the season, and leading Portland by 10 points midway through the first quarter

Nash going to the bench…let’s see if the offense can keep up the pace

Suns scored 30 points in a quarter…Just like old times!

Suns lead 30-19 at the end of the first quarter

Bench play has been good on defense, but still a significant drop off when Nash leaves the floor

Scratch that…Suns bench is now playing very poorly as Shannon Brown continues to shoot shot after shot

Nash is coming back in!

Nash hits the side fade-away jumper without missing a beat

Also, say what you want about Lopez’s rebounding, but he has 6 boards already midway through the 2nd quarter…Now Gortat is coming back in

Suns defense playing very well, and without affecting their offense for once! They are currently holding Portland to 28% shooting!

Suns still playing well, but Portland is still sticking around…mostly due to some wide open missed shots by Phoenix

Suns slowed down a little in the second quarter, but still maintain a nice lead going into the half up 49-34.

Second Half

Offense struggling at the start of the 2nd half.

Gentry calls a time out to talk it over before the Suns let a very dangerous team back in it

Dudley with a nice drive, then a fast break and-one…Looks like he’s trying to set the tone

Suns seemed to have fixed their offensive woes behind the play of Nash and Dudley

Suns now up by more than 20…Where has this team been?

Nash now with 17 points, 8 assists, and 3 TOs

Gortat now leading with 8 rbs to go along with his 12 points

Suns up 74-55 at the end of the 3rd quarter

All starters are on the bench with more than 8min left in the 4th quarter…Let’s hope they don’t have to come back in

Shannon Brown with a three and then a fast-break dunk…Everyone is feeling good!

Brown now has 14 points

Morris is awesome…that is all

Suns win!!! 102-77

Good win. Those mid range shots are starting to hit

And were also getting to the hole.
I also notice that gentrys going to the hotter hand.
Warrick and morris are getting more and more minutes and helping our offensive woes. Frye seems to be the last cog yet to turn but hes improving. glad starters got to rest as well. gives the rook/second unit guys a chance to get exp and gel

He's very, very athletic for his age (29)

I mean, he’s jumping like the average NBA 22 year old. The Super athletic guys like him, Jordan, J-Rich, Kobe and VC managed to keep that up for a while. However, VC turned into nothing, but a spot up shooter when he finally lost it. The same thing could happen to J-Rich and Warrick if they don’t adjust their game. I’m afraid it’ll happen to Amar’e too, but more so because of his knees, back, ankles…. then failing to adjust. It’s what happened to T-Mac, only a lot earlier.

Don't trade Dudley!

by Beavis 25 on Jan 7, 2012 11:57 PM MST up reply actions

Amar’e’s jumper is good enough that he could at least become old Antonio McDyess. J’Rich will have to rely a lot more on his 3PT shot and post game. Hak… well, at least his jumper is looking silky so far.

But right now his athleticism is fine. That one-handed jump for the dunk, get met by a defender, so just drop the ball into the hoop instead play was awesome.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

Hill fronted Wallace and kept him from even

touching the ball through most of the game. Wallace finishes with 1 point, 2 rebounds, 4 TO’s.

Hill owned him in a way that makes me want to misspell owned with a ‘p’ and capitalize random letters in embarassing Internet fashion.

If Hill can do this to the other team's player defensively...

Then he’s done his job in my eyes, and I’m fine with the rest of our team picking up the offensive slack.

Holding Wallace to 1point, 2rbs was just awesome…this was the same guy who just put up 33 points on LA the night before. Hill’s defense was nothing short of superb last night.

I love Steve Nash.

From ESPN’s DailyDime blog:

Isn’t it time to finally ask for a trade? Don’t you want one more shot at a ring before you retire? How much more of this can you take?

“What does that mean?” Nash asks back. "Do I go in and say, ‘Trade me to a top two or three team?’ I think it’s lot more difficult than people think.

“One, it’s not my style. Maybe I’m old school, but I feel like that’s not my place to give up on my team, give up on my teammates. I signed a contract and made a commitment.

“And two, I don’t feel it’s like choosing a restaurant. It’s got to be a situation that works for two teams. And I don’t know how simple that is. But before we even get to that part of it, I just feel that I owe it to my teammates to stay committed to them. I feel that I owe it to the fans and the organization to fight.”

and I think that any team that intentionally walks it up every possession and plays the grind it out halfcourt offense against us, is in trouble.

So far from what I see, we’re a good defensive team in the halfcourt, but our transition defense is still… uh… in transition?

Lots of solid performances tonight

But I’m gonna throw Ronnie Price some love. He had 5 assists and 0 turnovers. Sure, he only had 1 point and was 0-3 from the field, but he’s doing a decent job backing up Nash, providing stability and defense. The bench’s offense is not pretty but they’re not getting us killed either. With the exception of last game, in which they were matched against a very deep Mavs team, the Suns bench has been a pleasant surprise so far this season.

True

I am not sold on starting him just yet. If Frye can’t figure it out in about 6 more games however, and Morris still is playing at the same level, it’s a no brainer.

I think Frye would help the bench

Pick and pop is a weapon, and the bench just doesn’t seem to have anything at the moment – mostly because of Brown and Price.

Keef is picking and popping better than Frye is right now.

Not really

We haven’t used Kieff on screens very often. Kieff has gotten his threes more as the third man away from the screen from what I’ve seen. I’m not sure why, but that has been the case, with Kieff left open after the play developed somewhere else.

I think Kieff’s problem so far this season is that he expects the other players to know how to play. He stupidly backs PGs down to the block after a switch, and then expects a PG to feed him the ball. Sadly, neither Brown nor Price seems capable of a simple play like exploiting Kieff on a backup PG three feet from the bucket.

Instead, Kieff gets stuck with the ball 30 feet from the hoop with 2 seconds lft on the shot clock. Thankfully, Kieff can make those shots as well.

by MMotherwell on Jan 7, 2012 10:51 PM MST up reply actions

I saw him set screens at least 3 times last night, and each time he rolled out to the 3PT line.

Did he get the ball?

He never seems to.

I rewatched all Kieff’s made shots, and none were from a screen.

Oddly enough, the 30 footer was REALLY telling. On that play, only Price and Brown touched the ball, then Price lost it with 3 seconds left, Kieff retrieved the ball and bailed them out with a LOONNNGGG 3. That play sums up the bench for me.

by MMotherwell on Jan 7, 2012 11:22 PM MST up reply actions

I think it should happen, but not quite yet. I like making the rookie earn his minutes and appreciate it and not cast out Frye soooo quickly when he’s a veteran, had such a good year last year, and then is rebounding the hell out of the ball this year. But….a few more games, and yep I ’d do it. I think the following rotations might work well:

Starters = Nash, Redd, Hill, Morris, Gortat
Bench = Price, Dudz, Warrick, Frye, Lopez

by BringBackBarkley17 on Jan 7, 2012 5:32 PM MST up reply actions

I never get that

I think you should put your best players in.

But I don’t really think starting matters, personally. As long as th best players play the most minutes – and morris averages a bit more than Frye – then the coaches have got it about right.

That was why Gortat not starting last year was a non-issue in my mind.

by MMotherwell on Jan 7, 2012 8:44 PM MST up reply actions

Yep, it's about balancing the production from each unit

We can’t have all our best players starting and then no spark off the bench. As you pretty much said, that’s why Gentry started VC and Lopez in place of Dudley and Gortat last year. Someone has to be able to come off that bench and give us a lift.

This year, it’s been Warrick and Morris, so we haven’t needed Gortat and Dudley to do that. That makes 7 reliable players so far this season compared to just 5 the year before. Yeah, they have struggled, but they haven’t been no shows either. I’m confident they’ll return to last year’s form.

Don't trade Dudley!

As I've said before,

Keef is a nice lift coming off the bench, plus he plays plenty with the starters anyway.

It was the 9th game

So in a normal season, it would have been our first. I guess they just needed time like everyone else to get into rhythm.

We still have a long way to go, but last night was a good start. The rotations did look really good. I wasn’t expecting to see that kind of defense for a while. Maybe this Elston Turner guy is for real? Still, such a small sample size.

My hope is that they can continue to keep that energy or at least attitude up and that Frye will start knocking down some threes. Last night’s performance, plus Frye’s re-emergence and we should have a realistic shot at making the playoffs and scaring some teams. Still a big work progress though. I hope it can come together fast.

Don't trade Dudley!

Here's the 42 million dollar question..

Ok, I think we can all see this team has potential…And really with the way this conference is set up, with no obvious leaders and with every team with some kind of question mark, the suns have a chance to really exceed expectations.

So my question is who do we need to beat to make the playoffs? Looking at last years’ top 8 they all look good except of course, NO. But we also need to assume that the clips are going to be there. Given that, its tough to figure out who else we can replace. Right now the lowliest playoff contenders are Memphis and Dallas? Not liking the chance of either of them missing out. Not sure who else there is that is really vulnerable.

I think we might be able to make the 8th seed

If you look at the west at the moment, all the teams in the top 8 will likely make the playoffs with the exception of Utah (who actually could too). Dallas is the one team that will climb upwards for sure. So, I think if the suns are going to make the playoffs, they have to be better than Memphis and Utah, and everyone else standing below them right now. And it’ll be tough. Really tough- unless we play like we did tonight for the rest of the season.

This is going to be the best NBA play-off race due to the shortened season.

SA is playing great, but Manu being hurt has to eventually cost them wins. Lakers are not making the play-offs with Kobe’s issues and no Phil Jackson. Dallas is nothing near as good as they were last year. Memphis can’t sustain long without Zibo. Denver scares me, the Clips should be a force, and there’s nothing wrong with Portland. Then there is the Suns, Utah, and Houston in the mix. I’m very confident, we will make it. Nash is determined, our defence is much tougher to deal with than in the past, and our offence will catch-up.

by Think about it on Jan 7, 2012 11:49 AM MST up reply actions

The bench is the issue

They stagnate, and then Brown and Price take contested 22 footers. The bench is defending better, so it isn’t a massive deal, but surely they can come up with a better options than a contested 22 footer?

by MMotherwell on Jan 7, 2012 4:26 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, which is why having Dudz and Frye on the bench would help, I think. Start Redd and Morris in a few games after Redd gets up to speed. Dudz and frye would play about the same minutes tho as Redd and Morris, and still play with the starters some.

by BringBackBarkley17 on Jan 7, 2012 5:42 PM MST up reply actions

Or have Redd on the bench

I’m not sure we need another defensive liability in the backcourt with Nash.

Do you have high hopes for Redd? I’m torn. Before getting hurt, Redd was a high volume, medium accuracy offensive player who played no D for a perennial loser. In Milwaukee’s best season, Redd hardly played.

And now he is coming back from multiple knee injuries, I wonder if he can be more than a shooter? I guess we’ll see, but my highest hope is he plays adequate, and we flip him for a 1st rounder come the trade deadline to a contender that needs a shooter.

by MMotherwell on Jan 7, 2012 8:51 PM MST up reply actions

If he's a knock-down shooter, the move will be a huge success.

Part of his efficiency problems were because he was their main offensive weapon, so he received the bulk of the defense’s attention and often had to force up difficult shots. There is absolutely nothing wrong with his jumper. If he can spot up, maybe run off some screens or something, I think he’ll knock down a higher percentage than his career numbers would suggest. The issue is whether or not the knee will allow him to do anything.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

The bigger issue is defence

He never was a noted defender in the past, and one wonders if he can be after surgery has robbed some of his athleticism, and surely at least some of his lateral quickness.

I really doubt Redd hits at a higher rate than his career average, that never really happens when players shoot less, but this season, with the awful stats league-wide so far, somewhere around average in most years may actually be close to league leading this season.

I am not sure what Redd will offer, where or in what lineup, but for the price, he is a quality gamble. And long term for the Suns, if the support staff revive his career, we may be able to get a guy like that every year. The long term value of being the reclamation team, the “we save your career” team, could be huge for the Suns. Imagine former all-stars lining up to play for us after injuries – could be huge!

by MMotherwell on Jan 7, 2012 10:57 PM MST up reply actions

similar to JRich?

wasn’t JRich also considered a lousy defender? He was more athletic than Redd, but still- if he can play decent D and hit open shots, it’ll open things up for the PnR more, and give us back some punch on O.

I’d have to think he’d work out a lot better playing with Nash than coming off the bench. But, ultimately, you are right, that it matters how he plays D with the team. If he can’t score more than he allows to be scored, it ain’t going to work.

If Redd can be a serviceable wing defender and can knock down open threes at a high rate, he’ll find a place here. I can see situations where the Suns really need a three, and after a timeout load the floor with Frye, Morris, Redd, Dudley, and Nash for a six second inbound play.

the 2011-2012 suns have a chance to become the indians from "major league"

gentry = coach lou brown

nash = jake taylor (the tom berenger character)

robin lopez = ricky “wild thing” vaughn

ronnie price = willie mays hayes

channing = roger dorn

grant hill = eddie harris (veteran pitcher who puts crisco on his chest)

gortat = pedro cerrano

boom.

Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

Woooo-Hoooo!!

Don’t ya just love it?! A whole case of whup-ass vs. a legit playoff team. Steve looks as brilliant as ever and it’s a treat to watch. Morris is definitely a keeper. Frye will be fine. Gor-pez provide good size and mobility. BAMF and Dudz lead team D, which is so much better. Got rebounds? Hell yeah! We’re gonne be just fine in the wide open wild West. A blow-out. Just what Dr. Evil ordered.

This!

And out-worked Portland on the glass as well…it was great to see!

I’m glad Gentry seems to be able to get through to this team still…I was starting to worry that maybe he was losing them after some very lackluster efforts so far. But it was obvious that the change in tempo and focus on hustle came from the top last night, and the players responded.

Find me the video of Nash juking Felton out of bounds!

Wow what a move. Nash put on a clinic last night. Nash, where Amazing happens!

The funny thing was it was off a simple jab step...

But Nash used great timing to wait to step back until Felton had shifted all his body weight in anticipation of guarding Nash’s drive. When Nash stepped back, Felton tried to adjust against his body weight and momentum and basically lost balance so badly he stumbled back about three steps and almost fell.

I watched it about three times after it happened just in awe of how Nash created space off such a simple move using great timing…then drilling the wide open shot at the end was just the icing on the cake!

Rushed home near the end of the game to find it blacked out.

Thanks League Pass Broadband. But at least I got to watch it this morning.

Things I noticed:

  • Markieff Morris needs to start.

That is all.

Yeah

Is this typical of League Pass? I am not impressed so far because it seems like the past 3 Suns games have been blacked out on League Pass.

LP does not show nationally televised games live.

The stations paid for the right to show those games.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

I'm technoligically incompetent, and don't really know what a proxy is.

But no worries, I watched the game on a big TV in the comfort of my own home.

Update on the blackout stuff

I wondered why today’s game will be blacked out for me. Suns.com lists it as playing on FSNAZ and NBALP (league pass), so I should get it. I sent an email to the company looking for help on this, and much to my surprise received a clear and concise answer in about five minutes. Now that’s customer service!

Anyway, the reason it is blacked out for me today is because a major Canadian station has picked it up, and therefore it blacks it out for anyone in Canada using league pass (I’m currently in Canada). The customer service was also helpful enough to send me a link showing all NBA broadcasts picked up by major Canadian networks for the remainder of the season.

Boy oh boy are the Suns featured prominently on that list! It’s almost as if Canadian networks went after every Suns game they could get the rights to in order to feature a prominent Canadian…

Anyway, NBALP gets blacked out maybe a quarter of the Suns games thanks to US networks, and maybe another half thanks to Canadian networks’ Nash-fetish. Not cool.

Fortunately, using a VPN (hidemyass.com) for about 10 bucks a month seems to have done the trick. I am now, during game times, residing in Ireland. No more Canadian blackouts!

True using a proxy

I live In Australia, and I could watch it fine.

http://www.reddit.com/r/canada/comments/8zjv7/instructions_on_how_to_watch_thedailyshowcom/ is how I watch The Daily Show even though it is baclked out – try that for league pass and see what happens (change the IP address in the instructions to an Australian one – I’ll send you one if you need one).

I was down right giddy watching the game.

Steve’s ribs are officially healed. For maybe the first time all year he was aggressive and actually looking to finish when he attacked the basket. He showed his full arsenal of lay-ups and leaners tonight, not to mention he was putting on a clinic in that first quarter. So good to see him able to play the game like he can again.

Robin really struggled offensively, but he was a BEAST on the boards. That one-handed offensive rebound was sick.

Dudz is finally starting to play like I expected him to. He was getting off good shots earlier in the year, but he just couldn’t knock them down. Hopefully he can keep this up.

Hak is so much better offensively. We still have to live with his inability to play defense (he just doesn’t seem to understand rotations or how to box out), but he’s become so efficient offensively. He’s knocking down jumpers from everywhere on the court and attacking the rim fearlessly.

Brown did not make me want to throw the remote at the TV screen, which is an improvement.

we still need to figure out something the bench could do to score consistently. That being said, they did a nice job of not giving up leads. The defense and energy is nice.

If the Blazers had been rested, I doubt this is a 25-point win. But with the way they played last night, they would have beaten Portland no matter what.

That was the most fun I’ve had watching the Suns in a long time. Great win.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

Can we get someone else to handle the ball?

Maybe Hill can play with the reserves, and be the primary ball handler?

We gotta do SOMETHING, because so many possessions end (in a 22 foot contested jumper) with only Brown and Price having touched the ball. Even when it doesn’t, those two spend far too long on the ball, taking 5 seconds to make a move rather than going straight away. It is infuriating, but at least they play D, and so the score is more likely to be 0-0 in their minutes than 12-4, which is a huge improvement over last year!

by MMotherwell on Jan 7, 2012 11:02 PM MST up reply actions

Bassy is even worse than those two.

I agree we have issues. Question, I remember noticing Grant taking a seat much earlier than the other starters and I wondered at the time if we were going to see him with the bench. Did that happen? I got sucked up in the awesomeness of the game and lost track of some of the things I was looking for.

This always helps

Looks like… he played a few minutes with the bench in the second, replacing Hak at the three.

Also, the Suns/USAC staff need to do something about that court unless they want to continue embarrassing themselves on national TV (we have another TV game Tuesday – go NBA TV Fan Night!) and/or risk an injury to Grant.

And a lawsuit

I’d sue if I as Portland and Felton had hurt himself when he slipped. I rewatched that slip, and it looked like there was water on the court – Felton slid a good foot and a half.

Whatever it was, it needs fixing, because these are multi-million dollar players, and this is an injury waiting to happen.

I remember Grant slipping on the right corner and turning it over

right in front of the kid with the mop. The kid threw his hands up in front of his face with a look that said “I am so getting fired.”
