NBA Game Preview: Phoenix Suns Versus Milwaukee Bucks
The Phoenix Suns look for victory #2 in a row after drubbing the PTL in what was clearly their best game of the season thus far. The opponents tonight are the visiting 2-5 Milwaukee Bucks who are losers of four in a row.
Don't let the Bucks' record deceive you. While managing to lose to the Nuggets, Kings, Clippers, and Jazz, the margin of defeat against some decent WC competition has been near 6 points. In addition, the Bucks have played their last three games without Andrew Bogut, who is in Australia, dealing with, well, no one seems to know, so it's called a "family issue."
The Suns have won 18 straight against the Bucks in U.S. Airways Center and 23 straight match ups in Phoenix.
While the Suns strangely find themselves in the league top 10 in both field goal percentage (42.3%) and points (91.3) allowed, the Bucks only allow 91.9 ppg and 41.6%. Can you say a DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE is on tap for tonight? These two squads have remarkably similar numbers on offense, which, aren't that great:
PPG: PHX 92.9, MIL 91.4
FG%: PHX 42.8, MIL 41.9.
TOT REB: (let's remember Bogut is out tonight): PHX 43.7%pg, MIL 41.9%.
What They're Saying
Bucks coach Scott Skiles:
"We're not respectful of execution yet like we need to be. We're coming out of timeouts and guys are not knowing where they're supposed to be, losing focus. Which is typically what a losing team does."
Stephen Jackson (who couldn't blame himself or his teammates):
"It's hard when you don't get calls on the road. We're going in there aggressive and not getting those calls. It's kind of frustrating."
Suns Coach Alvin Gentry
"We've done a good job of containing dribble penetration for the most part...If you're not rotating in dribble penetration, then you can keep your bigs on their bigs so the rebounding becomes less of a factor. Elston (Turner) and Dan Majerle have done a great job with what we're trying to establish and just the whole atmosphere we're trying to create defensively."
The Bucks:
Getting Down to Brass Tacks
- The Bucks are winless on the road after losing last night against the Clippers. With only 11 players available, the Bucks were forced to play two rookies, Tobias Harris and Darington Hobson.
- The Bucks are without Andrew Bogut, (personal) Mike Dunleavy, (groin) and Luc Mbah a Moute (knee)
- The Bucks struggled on pick 'n roll defense, allowing Chris Paul, Caron Butler, and Blake Griffin to dominate. Let's hope that trend continues as Steve Nash and the boys go to work.
- The Suns dominated a road weary Blazers squad on Friday, outrebounding them 47-38 and out shooting them 47% to 32%.
- The Suns picked up 31 boards off the bench, led by Robin Lopez's 12 and Markieff Morris' 9.
Thoughts From the Master of the Obvious
This is a very winnable game for the Suns. Or, this is an expected victory. If the Suns are going to compete for a playoff spot, they need to beat up on the Milwaukee Bucks of the world. Like the Blazers, the shorthanded Bucks are playing the second game of a back to back. Look for the Suns to continue their defensive and rebounding prowess while exploiting the Bucks porous Pick and Roll defense. Here's to hoping Channing Frye can find his shooting touch, Grant Hill and Jared Dudley can contain Stephen Jackson and Brandon Jennings, and the Suns can build off their fast start Friday (30 first quarter points).

We can talk about this game everything. This is a game which Suns have to win.
But all is in their hands . Just go at the court and do the same things what they did with Portland. Simply.
Correct.

I don't know if I should be happy when the Suns win games or if I should be worried for the future.
It’ll be fun to see if the Suns can bring the same type of game they played against Portland tonight against the Bucks.
Be happy

Breaking Bad is the truth!
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
Im sad its ending next season:/
Bryon Cranston was on the Scott van Pelt show(hes a huge fan too) and confirmed the show wants to go out on top. Like barry sanders style. Great story telling. I love all of AMC’s shows

no 'fear the deer' tonight
Nash and Hill should only play about 20-25 minutes in this game. I know its early in the season but this will be huge down the sretch; hopefully it will allow the bench to settle in as well.
Yea i want nash and hill fresh for the lakers

no bench
Clippers played CP3 37 min, Griffin 40, and Buttler 35, at home, aginst the Bucks; like most teams right now they are over playing their starters. Point is, our bench is beginning to take shape and giving them extra playing time in games like tonight, will be HUGE. Yes, I hate ESPN predicting Clips ahead of suns this year.
Not to mention cp3 griffen anf butler
Only have 3 good knees between them. That inbalance in power on the team combined with that injury history is a huge risk

They probably will finish ahead of us, but so far their defensive and rebounding numbers are atrocious. So we could beat them if we keep defending and actually make a few shots. We could finish anywhere from 4th to 11th this year. My money says 35 and 31, 7 seed. And it’s all due to Elston Turner and Markieff Morris.

This is the Suns most winnable game since the home opener
against the Hornets. Uh-oh….
Let’s hope they take care of business tonight. I don’t think the Suns are good enough to survive a bunch of bad losses at home.
I still think it might be more apt to describe the game as a struggle of poor offense than good defense. So far the Suns have done better in comparison (ranking against the field defensively) than in years past, but the league as a whole is playing BAD offense.
So far the Suns coming out party consisted of 102 points on 46.8% from the field, not exactly overwhelming.
Only 10 teams in the league are shooting over 45% from the field compared to 22 last year. Only 14 teams are scoring over 95 points a game compared to 26 last year.
That being said, I don’t care if the Suns win 71-67 as long as they win. Still need to build some momentum going into that minatory 5 game stretch that’s only a week away.
It was only called the mildly irritated house on McDowell until I showed up.
This is one of those "we better win this" games
And those worry me. The Suns seem to be gaining momentum with the offense starting to click, and the Bucks are coming off a back-to-back as well as being shorthanded. All signs point to a win. Then again, Stephen Jackson was a Suns killer last year, wasn’t he?

Agreed.
This is one of those “we better win this” games And those worry me.
Citation required – see home opener vs. New Orleans Hornets.
Auspicious thoughts from my prior comment. The whole league has sucked at offense – not just the Suns, so it makes sense that the ship will be righted. The vast majority of the league (with the exceptions of players like Lebron) just weren’t ready/able to step out of the gate firing on all cylilnders.
This adumbrates favorably in terms of the Suns hitting their offensive stride. Couple that with a team that it appears might be able to be effectively deep (Warrick, Lopez, Morris) with stable returns from a couple players in the backcourt (Redd, Brown, Price). Doesn’t it almost make sense that at least one of the backcourt players will become more useful as they round into shape?
I’d like to think so.
It was only called the mildly irritated house on McDowell until I showed up.

Yeah, we posted at about the same time there with about the same thoughts
And, Stephen Jackson did kill us in the two games we faced him last year. He had a triple double in one, and 23 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in the other as we were, ugh, swept by the Bobcats.

I'm not worried
Bogut being out is in our favor and we’re at home. I’m looking for a big game from Gortat. Also, looking at that roster, this is a game Warrick should be able to dominate. Not many big-men on that team.
For some reason I don’t think Frye is going to break his slump today. I predict he’ll do that against the Lakers.
Don't trade Dudley!
1-3, and that’s only if you consider 18-7 a big game. Nice try buddy.

Actually, 2-4
because Bogut being out did help us quite a bit. Yeah, 18-7 I consider to be a big game from Gortat at this point.
The whole Frye thing was a ginx.
Don't trade Dudley!
The Bogut thing is an observation more than a predicition.
When a team is missing their best player, that’s obviously an advantage for the other team. I’m not giving you credit for that.

Getting a win tonight, so we can even things up 4-4, will help this team feel more confident against Lakers
We win this game and we have a really good shot at beating them on Tuesday. They don’t look too strong right now and we’d be the type of team that could catch them off guard and steal a win.
Don't trade Dudley!
I put 1 euro against the Suns
at 4 against 1. If we win, I’ll be happy. If we lose, I will be a sad puppy with 4 euro’s.

If the Suns are going to make the playoffs, these are the kind of games that they simply must win. That said, the Blazers game made me very optimistic about their chances.
On top of that, I would really enjoy a Suns VS Spurs matchup in the first round; LETS GO SUNS!!!!

I've really enjoyed the free league pass trial.
Watching games every night in HD has been a wonderful diversion.
I will not be buying the subscription for two reasons, but neither is due to the quality of the content. First school starts again on January 17th which severely restricts my free time and second I remain steadfast in my resolution not to spend money on NBA products this season.
For reference, DirecTV is my service provider.

Good player.
But he’s Nick Young right now. He needs to learn what a good shot is, and that it’s sometimes better to just move the ball. Plenty of potential, though.

True
I have liked it for being able to watch other games, but I just can’t justify forking over the cash when it seems like the games I want to watch are blacked out on league pass. If I am paying extra money to be able to watch NBA games, I want to be able to watch them all, end of story.
Member of the "Let’s Make FanShots Relevant!" Club
I gave in and bought it
despite also intending not to give the NBA any of my money. I live in New Mexico and get FSAZ, but for some reason I don’t get Suns games. I get Dbacks, Coyotes, UA, ASU, etc, and the channel description says they’re showing the Suns, but for whatever reason whenever the games should be starting, it switches to tennis or Dan Patrick re-runs or whatnot. I haven’t been able to figure out why. League pass works here though, and the cost isn’t too bad I guess. It’s nice being able to check in on Derrick Williams up in Minny on occasion as well.
Wait why not?
I’ve watched a few and they’ve been fine

Anyone think
If Frye doesn’t hit his shots tonight then Gentry will go with Morris as the starter going forward?
No
AG shows respect for vets and will give Channing more time to break out of his shooting slump. His shooting will come around. He’s pretty streaky like most 3 point specialists. He poses big matchup problems. He’s also rebounding better and holding his own on D. Morris is a more classic 4. We don’t need or want to rush his development.
Agreed. I definitely think it could happen at some point this season and kind of hope it does, but I’d be surprised if it happened in the next week or two.

This should be a really easy win, we just have to stay focused.
With all the bucks injuries and without bogut, we should win this one fairly easily and early. Having said that we shouldn’t take the bucks lightly.
jackson always plays well against us and jennings is starting to become an offensive weapon for them. We’ve had a tendency in the past to overlook teams much worse than us.
The suns need to keep their focus and intensity up or we might end up giving this one away. I’d like to see morris get alot more time if we open up the game early, that way he can continue to improve his chances of making the all-rookie team and maybe even become a darkhorse candidate for rookie of the year.
I’d also like to see redd play a few minutes off the bench as a spot-up shooter to get acclimated to the system more while continuing to get back in game shape.
love this comment. All right on… except Redd won’t be available tonight.
