Has the talent in the league fallen?

Let's compare it to 5 years ago.

, the players are in order of who I thought of first.

What I tried to do is fill up the positions with players who I think could make a case for the all-star game during that year. Obvioulsy, you can tell who the best of the best are. Some of these guys who made the list now were much better 5 years ago. Others are about the same and some have improved.

PG-Nash, Kidd, Billups, Arenas, Davis, Williams, Parker, Iverson, Paul...

SG-Kobe, Wade, Allen, Ginobli, T-Mac, VC, Johnson, Roy, Hamilton, Redd, Gordon, Iggy,...

SF-Lebron, Pierce, Melo, Marion, Artest, Jackson, Odom, Wallace, Howard, Deng...

PF-Duncan, KG, Nowitzki, Amar'e, Bosh, Gasol, Randolf, Boozer, Brand, Jamison, Smith...

C-Ming, Wallace, Shaq, Howard, Camby, O'neal, Okur, Chandler, Jefferson...

PG-Rondo, Paul, Rose, Westbrook, Nash, Williams, Rubio, Wall, Parker, Ellis, Jennings...

SG-Kobe, Wade, Harden, Johnson, Iggy, Gordon...

SF-Lebron, Durant, Melo, Pierce, Deng, Gay, Granger...

PF-Blake, Love, Bosh, Aldridge, Gasol, Millsap, Nowitzki, KG, Ibaka, Smith, Randolf...

C-Howard, Bynum, Gortat, Monroe, Noah, Horford, Chandler, Jefferson, Cousins, Gasol...

Let's start with the PG's. From the looks of things the PG position has remained very strong and although there are arguably more quality PG's now I'd say there were more Elite PG's then. Verdict? Slight edge to 07.

The SG position has dramatically taken a drop in talent and I don't see how anyone could argue that. Harden is now considered the 3rd best SG in the league yet he wouldn't even crack the top 10 in 07. Verdict? 07 by a landslide.

There seems to be more quality SF's from 07, but I could be missing some from today. Regardless, Durant is pretty darn good and Lebron has improved, so that counts for a lot of talent there. Verdict? Even.

The Powerforward position has also remained strong, but there is less elite talent in today's class compared to 07. Verdict? Slight edge to 07.

Originally, I thought the Center position had actually gotten even weaker, but it turns out that I was wrong and Omaha Sun was right. It's about the same as it was 5 years ago, though still very weak compared to the 90's. Verdict? Even.

Conclusion: The talent of the league has indeed taken a hit in the past 5 years, especially at the SG position. Why is that? Is the new generation not producing enough great players or do we just need to give it more time? Also, what's up with today's SG's? Is my conclusion wrong?
