Aussie's first suns game

Hi Guys! My name's Lynton and I'm an exchange student studying here for the semester, in Miami. As a long time suns fans (Charles/KJ era originally) its always been my dream to go to a home game. Well as a gift from my girlfriend - IM COMING TO PHX to see the SUNS v the Lakers on april 7th. Anyway, the point of my post wasnt to gloat, I wanted to know if u guys have like pre game parties or anything like that? (im over 21). Also are there any particular bars which are best to go to before/after the game? I really wanna get amongst it! I haven't booked accomodation yet - anyone know of any cheap places near by the arena?? Hopefully i can meet some of u guys at the game!! Thanks guys!

That's awesome!

You’ll have fun for sure, Lakers games are always good ones to go to. Plus, your lucky, Phoenix has one of the better stadiums in the league. And hey, maybe we’ll be in Playoff contention by then!

Hopefully the game will mean something.

Suns vs. Lakers is the best Suns game to go to. Plenty of Laker fans to get the blood boiling.

I highly recommend Hotel Clarendon. The rooms are affordable and you can just walk to the light rail and take it to the game for free. It’s a historic hotel that has had a modern remodel. The rooftop and pool are nice places to relax and the bar/restaurant are surprisingly really good.

Avoid the tourist trap places around the arena for a drink (Hard Rock, Hooters, Alice Cooperstown). Jackson’s will have cheap/affordable drinks. Majerle’s is where a lot of fans go beforehand. It’s nothing special besides cute waitresses.

Definitely check out First Friday artwalk the night before. It’s basically a big street party just north of the Arena with galleries, bars, and music.

If you a just staying a few days for the game then stay in downtown Phoenix,

check TripAdvisor for places close, when I came for a Suns game I stayed in Scottsdale (where I used to live), there’s a lot of nice hotels there and a lot to do, but if you’re just staying for a few days just to watch the Suns game definitely stay in Phoenix.

Scottsdale...

is where a lot of wealthy people live and the popular downtown area where people hang out is mostly wannabe LA-style. Think cougars, fake tits, spray tans, and people trying to show off their money. SInce you live in Miami you will not be impressed. They might have a decent DJ at one of the venues that weekend, but otherwise it’s just a tourist trap. The money has attracted a culinary scene so there are really good restaurants.

You are only in town a few days, check out the some of the mountains that make Phoenix unique like Camelback or Superstitions (if you have car).

Old town Scottsdale is nice

and the waterfront. NY Times calls Scottsdale the “South Beach of the desert” FWIW.

Ny Times...

Didn’t live in Scottsdale for 4 years and Australia for one year like me. If I had NY money and got my stuff courtesy of a work cc I might find it quaint.

It’s not 100% awful like some people make it out to be, but I would not recommend it for anything other then a restaurant, baseball game, golf. It’s the definition of plastic culture and not a good representation of Phoenix.

No worries mate

If you can remember come back and do a little fan post, good or bad.

ps – If you want to go where the locals go check out the popular dive bar Bikini Lounge on Fri./Sat. No bikinis, but cheap as dirt drinks and fun DJs. That’s real Phoenix right there.

No worries. Is there a way that I can share photos on here? I'm sitting in the first row between the two benches (not courtside though) and plan on taking a lot of photos.

Also im going to the Suns Vs Heat game on March 20th and am sitting fairly close to the court, but on the opposite to the suns bench so I’ll get some good shots then too

Sounds aweomse mate!

Thanks for the tip. Just for my indulgence – whats a dive bar?

A dive bar...

Is a shit hole bar that only alcoholics could appreciate, but sometimes become trendy with younger crowd because they have cheap drinks.

Aussies Ftw

I’m envious that you get to see Nash and the suns.
Hope you have a great trip mate

Jealous of you also

By the time I get out of Brisbane and find myself in PHX, Nash’ll be approaching 20,000 career assists. Either that, or long retired. Sigh.

I lurk.
