Phoenix Suns Can't Get Shots To Fall In Golden State, Warriors Win 102-96

In the pantheon of Phoenix Suns losses, this one wasn't so bad. The game in Golden State was competitive, hard fought and a lot of fun to watch. The Warriors got the win at home thanks to some big shots from their bench guys in the second half and great hustle on the glass in the first.

The Suns got plenty of good looks but went cold from three going 5-25 (.200) with Frye and Dudley only a combined 2-13 after a couple of hot shooting nights. As we've said many times, when those two guys are hitting their threes, the Suns are hard to beat. Without those extra points, the Suns just couldn't generate enough offense late in the game. Again.

Defensively, the Warriors only shot 37% in the first half, but exploded for 33 points in the third quarter. David Lee gave Suns fans a peek at what a big man with post moves looks like and added some great energy and effort on the glass as well. He finished with 28 and 12.

Lil Nate Robinson was his feisty self, adding 11 off the bench and rookie Klay Thompson and second year big Ekpe Udoh were both big for the Warriors. Give their bench credit.

Star-divide

The Purple Boys built a 12-point lead through the six minutes of the third quarter but the wheels fell off the defense with Lee and Monta Ellis fueling a 25-10 run in a span of 6:46 to take the lead going into the fourth.

Both Robin Lopez and Sebastian Telfair were bad enough in their second quarter stretch that they weren't let off the bench in the fourth. Instead, Ronnie Price came in and gave the Suns some grit but not much else. Markieff Morris had all ten of his points in the fourth but was 4-11 on the game.

The Suns got down by 10 in the final quarter but battled back to 94-91 with just under two minutes to go. Gortat missed an open 15 footer and then Dudley missed an open three and it was game over from there. Big shots were missed on one side and made on the other. Ball game.

One thing I'd want to take a look at tomorrow is how the Suns reacted to the Warriors switching defense in the fourth quarter. It still seems they didn't do a good enough job recognizing and finding the mismatches in the post.

The Suns shot just 38% in the fourth....that's not going to get it done. They need to find another way to generate points in the paint when the threes aren't falling. Especially, if teams are going to switch a guard on to Gortat on the pick and roll.

"We did a terrible job finishing the game," Alvin Gentry said in his postgame comments.

On to Denver for another one tomorrow. A blow out is entirely possible, especially if Nash and Hill get the night off as many expect.

It's a catch 22 with the whole Nash shooting more argument

but I personally think he should try to at least hoist up 10 attempts for us in a game. 6 shots from a guy of his caliber is just not enough.

I didn’t see that…but if that’s the case, then he obviously, probably b/c of dead legs or a sore back/shoulder/groin wasn’t feeling his shot.

As great as Nash can look some nights, to rely on him taking a lot of shots and carrying the team offensively w/ his points is unrealistic.

speaking of passed shots

I thought I saw Gortat get a rebound about 3 feet from the rim, then passed all the way out to the 3 point line. It was a Doris nightmare. He wasn’t even looking for a put back. It was more than once he did this. He just looked like he didn’t know what to do.

I remember once or twice when Steve got deep into the paint but didn't even look to finish.

Their were plenty of bodies around him but nobody really up in his face or in position to contest a floater. They were playing the pass, but he looked to pass anyway.

Dang

Tough loss considering we lead for a lot of the game. Once again the bench was terrible. Once again rebounding is a huge issue.

I will say I loved seeing all the post looks for Keef today. We need to be seeing more of that because once we went to him we started to score more.

Live with Frye and Dudley and die with Frye and Dudley

You called it, Seth. They missed make-able shots down the stretch and that was the difference. Also, yeah, Telfair. I don’t want to pile on here, but the Suns had the big lead in the 1st and I was telling my Warriors fan friend how they could easily catch up because the Suns are awful in 2nd quarters and the difference between Nash and Nash’s backup is like going from eating filet mignon to diving the dumpster for scraps. And then Telfair, sadly, went about making me look really smart for having given him this tip.

Udoh is the poster child for advanced stats and for watching a player’s true impact on the game. Lee was great tonight with his points and rebounds, and Udoh did all the things you don’t see in the box score.

On the way out of the arena, I saw a young-ish (about 20) Suns fan in a Connie Hawkins jersey. Great time at the game, but that was the coolest thing I saw all night.

Hmmm yeah

I guess the numbers were closer than I thought between the 2 teams in those 2 categories. Although they did have 10 more points off of TOs.

I thought Channing was going to have a good night after starting slow and then stepping inside for some 2s but he just continued to struggle from 3. As always we are getting the open looks from 3, just missing.

Channing

didn’t the Suns pass on David Lee for Frye?? Or I think it was when we need a replacement for Amare? I do know Lee was available when the Suns were looking for a PF and they passed. Has anyone noticed that either x-Suns players or players the Suns could have signed are killing us???Gortat has silenced those who thought he should have been an allstar (me), I thought he was Doris when he was 2 feet from the rim and passed out to the 3 point line (Gentry has an impact on him). Morris has so much upside in the paint, hustle, banging, high bball IQ, but, unfortunately, Gentry doesn’t develop bigs down low, so, we can continue to NOT see that to often. I personally believe Morris has the ability to take over games with his pint play, if it developed. We are close to being a good team; Brooks (if he resopnds well), trade package with Lopez for a proven rebounder, and solid wing, will complete this team.

Missed the bobbleehead.

The game was pretty fun (6 row makes it even better). But, it was really hard to watch— that 2nd quarter with the bench in and the 4th where nobody could make a basket. The 2nd unit is really funky. Like on paper there should be something there, not something great but passable, but then it looks like there’s no plan/strategy/execution from it. There’s just passing the rock around until someone shoots something somewhat contested or the ball getting turned over. Maybe it’s just a chemistry thing, because really I don’t see how the bench is supposed to play together. Tonight I did like Redd, Morris, and Chilly though. Despite not contributing much, Redd had some good footwork and seemed confident about his shot. Wasn’t nearly as slow as I’d think he’d be. Chilly has some serious reach though on those rebounds— and his energy is really great. I think he really needs to shoot more though because otherwise all he does it rebound on a bench in need of more scoring (of course the whole team needs scorers too). Morris played nicely offensively, had confidence and made some important plays. Just wasn’t enough at the end.

I did like how Frye and Morris posted more, it was the correct strategy vs. smaller players. It was paying off too. Too bad Lee decimated EVERYONE on offense. He was like free baskets for the Warriors. It makes sense that if all the big men on both team are scoring back and forth that whatever guard(s) start hitting their shot will take the game. Warriors have a really high number of scoring guards it’s no wonder they mounted a comeback.

I felt bad for Grant, who looked like he was struggling on both ends. He was laggy and lost his man (Ellis, mostly from memory). Nash and company were doing really great that first corner. Gortat did his thing, though his free throws were awful to watch. Kinda sad this was the first time I saw the Suns lose in person. And the game felt winnable too.

11 points, 5 reb on 4-6 shooting and held Ellis to 18 points, 3 ast on 5-20 shooting. He really forced Ellis into some difficult shots and never let him get going.

Gortat’s drops yesterday weren’t about bad hans. They were just him not looking for the ball. He got caught ball-watching, and we missed out a couple times because of it. This entire team has to cut that out. Too many guys stand there and watch the ball on both ends. Poor fundamentals and a low level of activity cannot happen with a team us untalented as our’s.

yup..

I been preaching at the church of the “Live with Frye and Dudley and die with Frye and Dudley” for some time now. Its a combo of the importance of the 3 point shot to our offence (and them being at the cornerstone of that) and that Gortat/Nash/Hill are just more consistent, (partly because they are not as dependant on 3’s), that the real swing comes from D and F.

your comment in this thread about 2 of 18 from 3’s, pretty much hits the nail on the head.

Also, re the bench, don’t mean to be an apoligist, but it was a bit better last night compared to the somewhat similar Houston loss, which played out along similar lines.

Overall, its pretty much cured by having exactly one stud, probably 2 guard, like what Jrich used to provide, thereby moving Dudley to his somewhat more familiar 6th man, to help out the bench, We would still need a bit more from the backup Pg position and a bit more from Lopez, but possibly the upswing in confidence from having a better team might be enough to get that happening.

Stayed up late on east coast to watch on NBA TV.

Watching Lopez trying to play is like finger nails on a chalk board. Amazing how much more mobile, and fluid Gorat is compared to Robin. Always knew this, but didn’t realizie how glaring it is. If somehow the Suns could trade him with say Dudley and get a 1st round pick do this yesterday already.
I have been a trade Nash guy for the past two seasons. I am now officially off that train. No question he is the Suns most valuable piece in trade discussions. I just think he still can play at a very high level for at least two more seasons. Gorat, Nash and Morris should be the core of this team. I would offer/listen to offers for the rest. Priority in trade discussions should be 1st round picks.
Team just lacks talent, especially at backup point, ( Telfair is horrible) and Lopez filling in at center.

i keep comparing my feelings watching this team to the feeling i had at one point during the 2010 playoffs.

It was at the end of game 3 of the spurs series (the game that goran went totally out of his mind). i was watching that game at the arcadia tavern with probably 100 other suns fans. there came a moment at the end of that game when i felt like the suns were fucking invincible. i was convinced that was the best suns team of my lifetime, with the best chemistry, and that we could absolutely beat anybody (including the lakers). the atmosphere in the bar was euphoric. everyone felt the exact same way.

the 2012 suns are sort of the opposite.

I thought they had a chance and that they could beat the Celtics, but for some reason I still had doubt about beating the Lakers.

However, I did feel that way back in 07. I came home from school, took a nap, woke up and remembered I was missing game 5. I ran downstairs, turned on the TV just in time to see Bell knock down a shot to give us a 10 or 12 point lead half way through the 3rd quarter. That was without Amar’e and Diaw and the only time I thought we were actually going to pull it off and win the Championship.

As as I said before

if the Suns can’t hit their mid to long range range set shots, they can’t win. But this was an awful officiated game, too. The NBA cannot be taken seriously when officials aren’t capable or willing to call a straight game. Just awful. I sometimes think the game would be better if there were no officials, and the players play an ultra high level of street ball.

Blatent walk

Did anyone see in the middle of the second quarter, after a made Suns shot, the ball was inbounded to Monta Ellis who took the ball, walked like 4 steps carrying the ball and then put the ball on the floor. He looked like he was zoned out and I guess all the refs were too. I rewound it and watched it again just to make sure. Nobody was paying attention.

Fun and exciting game to watch

Good effort and intensity – just not enought talent to pull out a very winnable game. I agree we rely too heavily on jump shots, a risky business with streaky shooters like Frye. I liked Morris’s play a lot. The guy looks so relaxed and polished sometimes. I think Chilly deserves more minutes. He’s diving for balls, grabbing contested rebounds against bigger guys etc. There were some unusually bad calls. Bench looks completely lost most of the time. Snowball’s chance in Denver tonight? Just lowered my expectations.
