Steve Nash Hits Game Winner, Suns Victorious 107-105
Happy Birthday, Steve Nash, you hit the game winner tonight on the road against the Milwaukee Bucks.
How fitting.
The Phoenix Suns were 35-5 against the Milwaukee Bucks since the '91-'92 season entering tonight's game. It looked as though they were in for their 36th W after two quarters of play when something typical happened. After scoring 67 points in the first half, the Suns suddenly lost momentum, putting up 40 in the final two quarters while giving up 55 to the Bucks.
What should have been an easy road win turned out to be a nailbiter for the Phoenix Suns. But none of that matters when it's Steve Nash's birthday.
In the first half the Suns were looking a bit like the 7SOL Suns. They ran, they made shots, they scored 67 points on 62% shooting. Michael Redd scored 12 while Nash went for 13 and 5. The Suns went 5-9 from beyond the arc and befuddled the Bucks for 24 minutes. Even the Suns' defense stepped up, limiting the Bucks to 20 second quarter points.
But in the 3rd quarter, the Suns gave up runs of 12-0, 8-0, and 6-0. The Suns' 17 point lead dwindled to 7 at the end of the third. In the fourth, the Bucks continued on a 17-2 run. The Suns helped the Bucks out by missing 9 of 10 field goal attempts in the first four minutes of the final stanza. Brandon Jennings took his second shot of the game, a 3, and promptly nailed it to give the Bucks a 3 point lead.
Of course it was Nashty to the rescue for the Phoenix Suns. After an incredible save off a Channing Frye block, Nash hit a running 3 to give the Suns a 2 point lead. After 2 Bucks free throws, the game was tied with 5 ticks left on the clock.
Enter the Nashty who drove to to the right side of the hoop for a running 6 footer. GAME OVER. A fitting climax to what must have been one of the happiest 38th birthdays in recent history. Thank you, Steve Nash
Worth Noting
- Josh Childress: 12 rebounds, 3 assists in 16 minutes. Just watch the guy. He's everywhere, a pest with a nose for the ball. We may just get our money's worth out of this guy. Hopefully
- Jared Dudley: 7-9 from the field, 19 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists
- Marcin Gortat 21 and 9
- Channing Frye: 14 points, 5 rebounds on 6-12 shooting
- Grant Hill: 13 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists
- Michael Redd: 14 points, 4 rebounds on 7-14 shooting in 20 minutes of play.
- Phoenix Suns: 48 points in the paint against 22 Buck points in the paint
Thoughts, Opinions, Observations
It's never nice to lose a 19 point lead and have to eke out a W in the final seconds. But any win on the road is a good win. The Bucks were 7-3 on their home court, and even if Scott Skiles refused to let Brandon Jennings take a shot (to prove some insane point or what have you), a W in the W column is sweet especially on the second night of back to backs.
The good news for the Suns is Josh Childress is contributing in that Lou Amundson kind of way. Getting his mitts on rebounds, playing D, being the dirtworker the second unit needs. But wait, there's more good news! Channing Frye's shot is starting to fall. And as many of you posted yesterday, when Frye hits shots, the Suns transform into a much better team. OH WAIT, there's even more good news! Michael Freakin' Redd is starting to gain confidence and hit shots. He's 16-35 from the field in the last three games which is an incredible improvement. Even Robin Lopez is contributing without throwing any hissy fits.
Heck, if this continues, we might all start feeling a tad optimistic.
Enjoy, Suns fans, the Suns have won 3 in a row and return home with a score to settle against the Houston Rockets.

where is everyone??
Nice recap. I like that you talked about that incredible save Nash had. That may have been the ball game to a degree. He looked great tonight. He won the game, for crying out loud. And when they put up the graphic of the other great PG’s at 38 (Mark Jackson averaged 2.3 pts and 2.5 assists at Nash’s age. What a loser.), and then when the real greats retired (Isiah at 32, Magic at 34 (I think)), and here we have Nash averaging 15 & 10 at 56% shooting!!! What an awesome dude.
The first half was some fun stuff to watch. The 2nd was painful, though. Glad they pulled it out. I guess they ran out of gas. But it wasn’t pretty.
Going back to the good lookin’ first half, though- Redd’s shot was so much fun to watch. Man, I hope the guy can be consistent wtih that shot. It was amazing. Such a pretty, smooth, quick release. If he really comes back all the way, we will have gotten a steal.
And, I have to retract all the bad things I’ve said about Chilly this year. I wanted him to play last year, but at the beginning of this year he was horrible. But he’s making me believe he can play again. Free Chilly.
Last tihng: Gortat, Hill, and Dudz are studs. That is all.

Law of Averages
It happens every single game … when a team is shooting over 60% in the first half, they will always come back to the mean and when a team is shooting 40% in the first half they will always come back up to the mean. You are what you are and it’s very rare to have a 50% shooting team shoot 60+% for a game.
Only good thing is that the Suns violated Lawlers Law (first team to 100 wins). Bucks hit 100 first , Suns still win.

Oh Wow
Great game to listen to on Sirius. Even though I pay for the friggin package and can only get the away team announcing crew. That’s a rant for another day. The Buck announcers were still pretty complimentary about Steve. Great win. One thing though … is it just me or does Redd have one of the oddest looking shots int he league. Sort of slings it from behind his head Jack Sikma style. Every time he winds up to shoot it I tilt my head like the dog does when I fart. Very odd.
Great win though.

Nash was the hero on his birthday. Redd has been knocking down shots. Maybe he was a good signing? Still too early to tell. Dudz and Frye knocking down their shots, that’s what we need. Gortat continues to shine.
Chill played well, however he’s still not worth his contract. I expected 8-12 PPG, 5-6 rpg, hustle and elite defense when we signed him. I hope he continues to perform well this season and that Gentry keeps playing him if he does, but we still need to amnesty him this summer and use that money for a more productive SF like Batum.
This was a good win despite the near choke. What surprised me is that we were even good enough to get a 19 point lead. I wouldn’t have thought that was possible a couple weeks ago. We’ve got 3 in a row. I say we keep streaking.

if they don't gel even more, there's rough times ahead...
The rest of Feb isn’t bad, but March and April are brutal. They’d have to become one of the very best teams in the league even to make it to the playoffs, given where they are now.
Is it what people were worrying about? Nash will make us good enough to get a bad pick without making the playoffs? Or will the team end up being really damn good, overachieving expectations with chemistry and unbelievable shooting by a by-gone star named Redd and two really old guys in Nash and Hill, along with a resurgent Chilly and brash up-and-coming rookie named Morris? We’ll have to see…………

Here is, if not an unbiased, at least a very balanced thread I found comparing Steve Nash and John Stockton in their primes.
http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=160438&page=7
Besides the obvious Nash-hating Laker fan or two, this thread had a surprisingly objective view from fans of all NBA teams. I’d say it’s split 50-50 whether NBA fans would take Nash or Stockton in their respective primes.
"I'm a nobody." - Steve Nash in 1997
That greymatter kid seems to know what he's talking about.
Purely from an offensive perspective, Nash is clearly better. They’re about equal as distributors, but Nash is just an all-around better shooter.
PG defense has very little impact on the defensive side of the ball. It’s why garbage like Fisher and Jameer Nelson can be starters and still play on teams which have given up 42-43% shooting over the past few years.
Though Stockton was clearly a better overall player, it’s not necessarily easy to say you could more easily build a team around him. For one thing, all but one of his seasons he had Mailman; so there’s no actual sample to compare. Nash has had to deal with different pieces coming in and out and up until last year was still able to play at an elite level, proving that he can take any cast and elevate them on the offensive side of the ball (just like CP3).
I totally agree with this.

Yeah greymatter had some great points.
And LOL at the guy who said Stockton was better solely because he was #1 in assists and steals. Stock also played about 4-5 more seasons and STARTED 8 more seasons than Nash did.

And don't forget...
In his prime, Steve Nash’s championship-contending teams suffered severe roster turnover. From 2005-2010, Steve remained the only constant. Many players came and went and it’s surprising to see him still carry this team when there was so much turnover in the roster. Not to mention the injuries that Amare suffered and yet Nash still managed to persevere through that.
Stockton had Malone since the beginning. Even though bits and pieces of their roster changed, they remained at the core of their team for a good 17-18 seasons (I don’t remember exactly). John managed to have some continuity while Steve has kept his teams relevant with practically a different roster every season since he’s returned to the Suns.
I’m not taking anything away from John Stockton but what Steve Nash has done in Phoenix can’t be taken lightly.

Not to bring the past up
But Amare should have taken the contract we offered him and stayed with Nash… They could have had that same kind of conjoined career that Malone and Stockton had.

You hit the nail on the head.
Nash has proven he can succeed, at least individually, with or without stars on his team, and with or without any sort of chemistry. Stock never had to face that problem.

Josh Freakin Childress
Nice to see him getting a chance. Just what this slow, unathletic squad needed! What I like most about this string of wins is that we are putting points on the board outside of Nash and Gortat receiving a pass from Nash. The second unit has really been the difference maker these past few games. Lopez has been assertive and really helps Telfair not go crazy with all that dancing on the perimeter. In fact, I wish Gortat was showing the moves Robin is currently displaying right now. I would feel all-in-all “ok” about things if we were getting more easy points in transition and Gortat was scoring indepently of Nash.

This squad must keep this momentum. Its the only way we will have the confidence when our schedule hardens. Chilly with moar minutes will be great. Also what happens when aaron brooks returns? Does ye become the backup pg. and do we get rid of price or telly?

Last 3 games the Suns look like a real NBA team.
So glad the offense is getting back to normal. They play good defense for most of the games, but had nothing to show
because the offense sucked. That lead weight feeling in the pit of my stomach has been absent recently, and I don’t

We need a new backup PG
Copy-paste for the Nash era, but true. Telfair’s only offensive skill is the ability to get himself a semi-open 20 footer. That isn’t a skill that deserves an NBA gig. Sadly, Price is awesome but an even worse PG.
Redd looks good, but Telfair doesn’t get him the ball, pretty much ever.
We should try out a few D League guys. Ben Uzoh and Blake Ahearn have skills, and Uzoh is a nice complementary piece with solid D and nice size. It can’t hurt to try them, and they are cheap options.
I don't see how Price
Is worse than Telfair. I really don’t.

Cardinals, Suns, D-backs for life!
Price has been backing up
DWILL for years, he is more than capable of a back up job for just one year… he is not a future pg but he is a nice back up and better than bassy who brings D and drives to the bucket
Imagine Price and JChill
Be pandemonium on D and loose balls.
He can't shoot.
PG is asked to shoot of the PnR in our system – he can’t make open 20 footers or 3’s.
Simple as that.

True
But to be honest I don’t think Bassy is doing any better a job. He takes way too long to initiate the offense usually. I don’t see Telfair hitting many more shots.

Telfair's our little enforcer.
I like his toughness. He may dribble the ball more than he should, but he’s had some nice moments. I’m one of the few (maybe the only) people who like him.
Just because Steve Nash has that "dirty hipster" look doesn't mean he's in need of a shower. Steve Nash bathes in the tears of his victims on a nightly basis.

I wish we could trade for eric bledsoe
Billups is out for LAC so they may need a SG. Shannon brown on that team would be a the final peice to ultimate lob city.
Brown for bledsoe ?
Or do we wait and see for brooks.

Damnit work and damnit class
Missed yet another game. Reading this, it looks as if it was typical Phoenix Suns of the old times? Big lead, then blowing it, but finding a way to grind it out in the final moments.
A second night of a back to back, I find this win very impressive, especially considering the Bucks were 7-3 at home prior to tonight.
Nash's b-day is the two yr birthday of my SBNation account
I never realized until today.

Great to see Steve Nash playing at that level after alllllll these years.
He’s like a fine old wine- just gets better as he ages. He’s the original Energizer Bunny.
Kudos to S. Nash from a fellow Canuck.

"After 2 Bucks free throws, the game was tied with 5 ticks left on the clock. Enter the Nashty who drove to to the right side of the hoop for a running 6 footer. GAME OVER."
That’s not how the game ended in case anybody was wondering. Nash hit the game winner over Gooden with 5 seconds left and the Suns kept the Bucks from getting off a shot after a timeout.
You could say that 5 seconds of defense was the Suns’ birthday present to Nash.
I agree.
That defensive stand was awesome.

He did the Monster Nash ..
.. on his birthday yet! A v. pleasant surprise to see a scrappy decent Suns team suddenly show up out of the swampy nowhere. Winning begets winning. We’re finally showing some toughness and resilience – and with the condensed schedule the depth of our bench is becoming more of an asset.
Happy happy joy joy!
