Phoenix Suns' Michael Redd Returning To Form, Filling Desperate Need As Reliable Scorer
Michael Redd is on a roll, and just maybe a Phoenix Suns team with very few reliable scorers has found themselves a reliable scorer. Whoda thunk it would be Michael Redd after all those injuries?
Redd said he knows people in Milwaukee and elsewhere felt his career was over after two surgeries for anterior-cruciate ligament tears in the same knee, per Paul Coro, beat writer for azcentral.com and the Arizona Republic. But he said he never questioned his ability to return, working individually since a brief 10-game return at the end of last season with the Bucks. "Not even in a bad way," Redd said of the doubting fans. "Like, 'He should go ahead and retire. He's had a great career.' I knew I had something left in the tank. A lot, actually. I thought I got robbed of a couple years with the ACL injuries.
"That's been the story of my career, kind of overachieving and climbing over mountains. When people say I couldn't do something, that motivated me to do it."
If he continues on his current pace (averaging 14 points in 21 minutes over last 3 games), or even improves as his rusty game returns to him, the Suns may have had a gift drop right into their laps. A gift that was desperately needed.
For scoring on this team, you can only count on Steve Nash and Marcin Gortat on a night-in night-out basis. Both will get you at least 10 point a night. Occasionally 20. All while producing 10+ a night in their secondary category (rebounds/assists) as well.
Everyone else on the team? Scoring is a total crapshoot.
- Jared Dudley - scored 10+ points in 7 of his last 12 games.
- Grant Hill - scored 10+ points in 5 of his last 12 games.
- Shannon Brown - scored 10+ points in 5 of his last 12 games.
- Channing Frye - scored 10+ points in 3 of his last 12 games.
- Sebastian Telfair - scored 10+ points in 2 of his last 12 games.
- Robin Lopez - scored 10+ points in 2 of his last 12 games.
- Markieff Morris - scored 10+ points in 2 of his last 12 games.
- Hakim Warrick - scored 10+ points in 1 of his last 12 games.
- Ronnie Price - scored 10+ points in NONE of his last 12 games.
- Josh Childress - scored 10+ points in NONE of his last 12 games.
"From where I came from the last couple years to get to that point to play at this level again is a miracle," Redd said, according to Paul Coro, beat writer for azcentral.com. "The NBA is tough so to come back into form, all the hard work and tears paid off."
The Suns need reliable scoring from someone other than Steve Nash and Marcin Gortat.

Gotta say, I never saw much of Redd in his former life.
I’ve been really surprised at how quick he is off the dribble. He’s explosive and strong, and he moves well without the ball. He’s got a nose for the basketball and a killer instinct. When he works the rust off, he just might be a star again. He seems to like it here so I really hope he keeps improving and stays healthy. If he does, it just might put Aaron Nelson into the hall of fame as a necromancer.

That would mean
We’d have a Wizard, Necromancer and a Polish Hammer! If Redd can become that shooter we need and then Frye and Dudley get their shots back, we’ll have some nice archers too.
Don't trade Dudley!
me neither. id seen a bit of him but not much. he is no defender though. he needs to score to offset the points he surrenders.

It's not just you.
I would say most NBA fans outside of Milwaukee don’t really remember just how awesome Michael Redd could be. The reason being that after Jordan retired we had this huge influx of extremely talented 2-guards like Kobe, Carter, McGrady, and Ray Allen. Then, a few years later Wade, LeBron, and Joe Johnson came along so Michael Redd kind of just ended up being lost in the fray. The fact that he played on some really, really completely forgettable Milwaukee Bucks’ teams don’t exactly help, either.
This guy might end up being a huge steal for us. He’s not that old, either. He is only 32 which isn’t that old in NBA years. Plus, it’s not age which makes player’s skills decline. It’s the minutes played or his total NBA mileage. The fact that he’s played very little basketball since 2009 means that once he’s in prime-condition that he’ll feel more like a 29 year old, not a 32 year old.
Grant Hill is the perfect example. He signed a 6 year contract with Orlando which equals a total of 492 games. Out of 492 possible games played Hill only played in 200 which equals up to 2.5 NBA seasons making Grant Hill’s body be 3.5 years younger in NBA terms which is the reason why Grant has managed to play at a high level when most NBA players are typically reduced to being one of the last guys on the bench.

Exactly.
Same with Amare.
He has missed 144 games in his career. That’s 1.75 NBA seasons. So his body is only 27 in NBA terms.
I think we can unilaterally make the irrefragable blanket statement which all of us will agree upon that major injuries effectively extend the careers of players well beyond that of healthy players that burn their way through their bodies by playing lots of games when they are young.

Although, it comes with a price and if you get too many big injuries you’ll be reduced to a mere role player like what happened to T-Mac and Hill. Although, Hill has fared better.
Don't trade Dudley!
Yeah, it has to be an injury that forces them to sit out but doesn't have lasting effects.
So can’t really say that about Amar’e.

I hope he continues to work himself into game shape
He’s only 32. A guy with his work ethic and talent can at least be able to serve as a nice role player. Maybe I’m being blindly optimistic, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s averaging 10-12 ppg by the end of the season. I really hope things work out for this guy. We really need him. Plus, I don’t want to see Shannon Brown on the court anymore.
Don't trade Dudley!
The number one reason to cheer for Redd.

haha well the situation has changed.
The question back then – at least in my mind – was: “Can Michael Redd be that J-Rich type that gets you consistently 20 points per game?” I still say no.
Ther question is now: “Can Michael Redd consistently score 10 points a game?”. To that question, I can say “hopefully”.

I sure do hope Redd keeps improving to where we can maybe sign him again next season
because Wilson Chandler wants to go back to Denver so there’s another player unavailable next season.
Twitter: @FredLegittt
I question the re-signing in Denver. They are already paying Afflalo and Gallinari $20 mil a year for the next 4 years to start at the wing positions. And they just re-signed Nene to $14 mil a year for 5 years. They have to hold SOME money for the PF and PG positions, don’t they?
I don’t see them giving another $10 mill a year (which is what Wilson Chandler is worth) to a backup wing.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Agreed.
Plus we can offer him a starting position in addition to the cash.

$10 million?
For Chandler? WOW! I disagree.
A team can realistically only pay 3 players that much. Is Chandler top 3 on a team good?
Marion in his prime was far better than Wilson Chandler IMO
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
Absolutely
Marion was a HELL of a player though.

Sad to see our 10+ scoring totals
Hell, it took us a really long time to have someone score like 28+ points in a game til Nash decided it was time for him to beast. We need someone we can pencil in for over 10 a night.

It's nice to see Redd playing well
I don’t care about his defence. He was never here to defend, he’s here to shoot and he does that very well.
Exactly.
If Redd turns back into that 20PPG scorer that he used to be then I’ll give him a little slack defensively.
Plus, explosive scorers like Michael Redd become motivated on the defensive end if their shot is falling.

Letter that Charles Barkley sent to Bill Lambieer through a ballboy during the 89-90 season....Moments later, Barkley and Lambieer got into a fist fight.
If Redd continues to improve like this then there is no way we can afford not to start him.
He could become our number 2 option behind Gortat which will allow Nash to focus primarily on setting other guys up rather then feeling like he has to score 20 a night for us even to have a chance at winning.
However, in order to move Redd to the starting line up it means benching either Dudley or Hill and if that decision were up to me I would keep Dudley in the starting line up and have Grant be the first guy off of the bench. Dudley has just been playing so well as of late and I think he clearly deserves to start….Plus, Dudz himself said that he wanted to be a starter.
Grant is a classy guy so I don’t think he would take being moved to the bench as a sign of disrespect. He brings a lot of value off of the bench since he has the ability to play the 1 through 4 and is capable of creating his own shot where as Dudley and Redd clearly benefit more from being on the floor with Nash.
I’m actually excited about our team for the first time this season. A healthy, 20 PPG scorer like Michael Redd might be what turns us back into a winning basketball team again. Plus, who doesn’t love a good redemption story?

Fuck You.

the second team really needs a scorer on it. On the second team, he can get a lot more plays called for him. Whereas with Nash in the game, he’s a corner-3 spot-up guy. I still see Redd getting most of his minutes with the second team.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Grant doesn’t play well off the bench. Old knees don’t do well when he has to sit to start the game. And the last time we tried it was a few years ago, so I highly doubt it has gotten any better.

And you think Redd's knees are better than Grant's?
That aside, I think he’s better holding down the offense for the 2nd unit.
Voted most likely to say "I told you so"
That's more a case for starting Redd over Dudz than benching Grant.
Redd had his best game in his lone start, but he’s played pretty well recently off the bench as well. Grant wasn’t good off the bench when he tried it.

Grant is our perimeter stopper
And the job of the perimeter stopper is to lock up the other team’s best perimeter scorer.
The other team’s best perimeter scorer is rarely going to be the guy coming off the bench, so…

great article alex
great posts also. I was wondering what Gentry would do if Redd starts putting up 14-18ppg. Obviously those numbers on this team needs to be in the starting lineup. This is a tough decision that Gentry probably welcomes. What do you think the starting lineup should be, so long as everyone is playing to their level? Three in a row with beatable teams in the next three games would put us at 500, like a new begining. I think the short season is going to produce alot of unexpected up n downs in the playoff seeding, from injuries and extended minutes. Hopefully we can capitalize and get hot at the right time, kind of like 09/10 season.
I would think he would be taking the 2 guard starting spot
But…. Dudley has voiced a few times now how much he wants to start on a team like this. Of course Gentry has final word but Dudley does want to keep his starter spot. I would also prefer to keep Grant in the starting lineup for reasons mentioned above.

funny...
I do think you may have stumbled into Babby’s recruiting philosophy!! replicate Major League!! We just need a voodoo following macho latino big man…Edjuardo Najera or maybe Scola???
Doesn't Robin qualify?
He’s Latino. He’s got too much hair not to be macho. And he believes in superheroes, which is pretty close to voodoo.
Voted most likely to say "I told you so"
good point...
the voodoo thing is a stretch, but maybe we can work with that.
And maybe we can recruit Nash to do a short clip, like the Avatar clip with leandro, casting Robin in the role of the voodoo guy, and with key roles for Hill, Dudley (somehow, just think he would be a good actor..), Shannon Brown, Sarver, Gentry and Redd?? Need to get Gorat in there as well….
Fuck you, Jobu. I do it myself.

Redd definitely hasn't been shy about shooting
35 attempts in only 62 minutes over the last 3 games. But he’s also putting in 47% and getting the the FT line, so it’s solid.
He doesn’t rebound or defend, so I think he’s probably best coming off the pine in a 6th man role. A true scorer off the bench is something we desperately need.

Hate to say it
But if redd keeps it up and suns stay as competitive as they have Aaron brooks returning could be a big lift next month.

JChill and Redd need the ball more
JChill is the only guy on the second unit who can get the ball into the post. Lopez looks good down there lately – when he has a huge size advantage, and can get within 7 feet of the basket,h e can really get that ugly hook to fall.
Let Redd walk it up court and look to score, or throw it to chilly to throw into the post.
chuckle-- there's a left-handed compliment!
Lopez looks really good down there, ya know when his defender is short or falls down and Robin is 7 inches from the hoop, or everyone is walking away because they think it’s a timeout— Yeah, then he can hit that half hook about 45% of the time!
