Rockets' Bench Dominates Suns, Rockets Win 96-89

Goran Dragic torched his former teammates with 11 points and 11 assists tonight.

The Phoenix Suns showed improvement tonight, playing an entertaining, back and forth game with the Houston Rockets, but the Rockets bench proved to be too much and the Suns fell short in the end, 96-89. Goran Dragic haunted his former team with 11 points and 11 assists, and provided a toughness and poise not always seen in his time in Phoenix, committing only 2 turnovers in 29 minutes of action.

All five of the Rockets bench players scored in double figures and all held a double digit + in +/- as they totaled a whopping 57 points in comparison to the 13 scored by the Suns bench. Michael Redd scored 11 of those Suns bench points.

Channing Frye led the Suns with 21 points and 10 rebounds, as he hit 4 of his 9 3-point attempts and looked aggressive from the start, and newly minted 2012 all-star Steve Nash scored 14 points to go with his 13 assists. Nash didn't miss a shot, going 7-7 from the field.

Improvement? Yes. But the Suns continue to be dogged by the same problems of inconsistent rebounding, spotty bench play and lack of late game offensive execution. All reared their ugly heads tonight.

Read on for more.....

Star-divide

The game started out in fine form for the Suns. Channing Frye and Grant Hill had success aggressively looking to score and tallied 15 of the Suns first 17 points, the highlight being a thunderous slam dunk by Frye that left most everyone asking, "who is that bad man in Channing Frye's jersey tonight?" Frye's performance was a night and day difference from his last game against the Rockets.

However, the Rockets controlled the boards early on, held a 5-1 offensive rebounding edge, and the Suns lead after 1 was only 29-26 before yet another disastrous second quarter.

How bad was the second quarter for the Suns? The Rockets bench dismantled the Suns bench 28-3 in the quarter. It was no contest. With Sebastian Telfair running the offense, there was no rhythm. All shots were created one-on-one, players looked lost. It was hard to discern what they were even attempting to accomplish on the offensive end. It was that bad.

Meanwhile, the Rockets hummed along just fine, with Patrick Patterson hitting baseline mid-range jumpers, Chase Budinger and Courtney Lee knocking down 3s, Jordan Hill cleaning the boards, all managed efficiently by backup PG Goran Dragic. To see Dragic look so composed and in control while Telfair struggled was painful for Suns fans to watch. Point guard play was hardly the only difference between these two teams' benches but it was an obviously noticeable one.

Nash and the starters returned with around 5 minutes to go in the half, restored some order, and the Rockets lead was only 10 going into halftime, 54-44. Then the second half started with a 16-3 run by the Suns, capped by a Jared Dudley 3-pointer to give them a 60-57 lead. Frye hit a 3, Redd hit a 3, Dudley hit another 3. After six 3s in the quarter by the Suns helped them to a 76-74 lead, it was time for.....gulp.... the bench to come back in.

Gentry didn't replace all five this time, and left Marcin Gortat and Channing Frye in the game for nearly the entire second half. Markieff Morris and Robin Lopez did not return. The fourth quarter featured five lead changes before the Rockets seized control for good with 5:47 remaining on a Budinger 3-pointer.

The Suns pulled as close as 92-89, but a poor Gortat pass was stolen by Kyle Lowry for an easy layup, and Gortat committed an offensive foul on the Suns next possession. Between ineffective offensive performance and stifling Rockets defense, the Suns weren't able to score for the final 2:18 of the game.

And here's that Goran kid...

Well

Even with Dudley and Frye playing better we are still having the same problems. Closing games, rebounding, and bench scoring. As long as we are playing hard I will be happy but it is clear that there is only so much this team can do with the current players.

Lopez needs a little more time, Gentry needs to realize that and Chill needs to be more consistent

Otherwise, our team is playing as well as they possibly can right now.

Nash made his 8th all-star game. He’s 38. That’s really cool. The guy really is Batman.

I think the biggest problem

Is time and time again Telfair fails to get the offense going quickly. He wastes about 10 seconds every time just dribbling the ball round before initiating the offense. It kills the unit if they aren’t running off stops.

Carter having a glazed-eyes contest with Boris Diaw. Carter's winning, but Diaw might respond by eating his eyes.

... for the bench

We lost by 7, and the starters were excellent – the bench cost us a massive lead.

http://popcornmachine.net/cgi-bin/gameflow.cgi?date=20120209&game=HOUPHO tells the games story – bench loses a lead, Starters claw it back, bench loses igt, starters can;t m,ake a final, tired run.

by MMotherwell on Feb 10, 2012 5:19 AM MST up reply actions

That's the impression I got form the box score.

We finally get the starters and Redd firing on all cylinders, and the bench falls off a cliff. Can’t we put together a complete effort at least one tie this year?

Scary part?

The starters logged HEAVY minutes, and the bench hardly played. If 40 minutes of Gortat and Frye can be erased with 10 minutes of Telfair, we are in serious trouble.

Yeah, that was scary.

A couple bench guys were like -17 even though they barely played. That’s hard to look at.

When you put it like that...
If 40 minutes of Gortat and Frye can be erased with 10 minutes of Telfair

Wow! Just look at the suckitude—

Telfair is 4x worse than 2 players, or 8x worse than 1 player who was a +9, which would make him a 72 --

I think we’re going to need to look at whole new factorials of failure or logarithms of losing…

Didnt see the game

But by the box score it looks like the stars played awesome. The bench just didn’t come with the same fire. eventually the starters couldnt play great forever. at one point I saw redd was the only bench player with points. Just sadd. And the stayline for all the bench players were reading 0 or 1. Despite that we kept it close but still. If were not tanking this season a non gortat nash trade must happen

Rebounding

It was an issue all game long, not just for the bench. They had plenty of second chance opportunities and they cashed in on so many of them. Telfair takes way too long to initiate any play on offense and our guys get terrible shots and just look so out of rhythm.

so maybe itll take a rocket to save us. as in Aaron brooks. idk why bassy keeps stop the offense. players who cant create for themselves need to be up tempo to take advantage of uset defenses. i had hopes for bassy but maybe we give price another shot. he hasnt got a chance to play with this rotation

Gonna rewatch the end, but here’s what the Rockets said they did to shut down the Suns late:

“We changed up that very last five minutes to switching on him (Nash) so he couldn’t make those pocket passes and find the open guys. That was the difference,” Budinger said after the game.

I don't think that happenned

Sorry, it may have happened, but was not the reason we lost. The fluffed timeout play featured no Nash. Ditto the possession after. But I’ll review it.

I’;ll start at 4.48 to go, Suns down by 85-87.

1. Nash gets it to Gortat in a good spot – MG misses hook shot from 10 feet. good look – in and out.
2. Nash MG screen, Rockets jump on Nash, Gortat fumbles ball TO.
3. Screen Nash & MG, Nash to Gortat, who feeds Dudley who drives and feeds Gortat in the paint – MG fouled. 2 shots. MG misses BOTH – that cost us really.
4. Nash MG screen – Nash blows into the lane for a 7 foot finger roll. Pretty play.
5. Nash runs around a Reggie Miller long series of screens, pump fakes, gets his man in the air and feeds Gortat. Foul – two shots. MG sinks both.
6. Gortat throws a long pass, Lowry steal and layup.
7. Nash MG screen – rockets switch twice, Nash feeds Gortat, MG called for a charge.
8. 55 seconds to go -time out. Redd in for MG. The fluffed play. Nash inbounds to Frye in the high post, and Nash flashes to the top of the 3 point arc on a Hill backscreen (I assume Nash was supposed to get the ball back) – play breaks down, Hill drives, offensive foul.
9. Time out. Suns inbound to Nash, who passes to Dudz, who passes to Hill who spins on Lowry, drives and misses.
10. 20 seconds left, down 7, Nash passes to Frye who misses a covered three. Game, set, match.

So we scored on 2 of 10 plays – a finger roll on a Nash Gortat PnR, and 2 FTs for MG. The two missed FTs, the two charges and two MG turnovers killed us – that is 5 plays with no points. If Gortat sinks both FTs, we get to within one and things are probably different.

Seems to me we lost the game because we DIDN’T go to Nash enough, not because of any magical Houston change up.

The Suns tried not to rely on Nash, and that was a disaster. Lets stick with “Live and die with Nash”.

it just depends how much he wants

or actually how much someone is willing to pay him. if a team knows our salary they could just bid the minimum it takes to get him which could be like a few thousand over whatever our cap limit is. so if our cap is 3.5 mil then they just have to bid 3.51 mil and then they can get him because we cant match without going over the cap.

Telfair is so bad...

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

I generally dislike "do-overs", but...

Dragic seemed happy being here again and playing against his old teammates and coach. After watching Telfair struggle so badly it really made me miss the hell out of Dragic all over again. Tonight he once again showed what he is capable of, and unfortunately we were the recipient this time.

This doesn’t mean I blame Gentry, Babby, or Sarver for trading him…It was his fault he played so poorly last season and seemed to lose that intensity that made him “The Dragon” that we all knew and loved. But it looks like he learned his lesson and bounced back in Houston, and I would be all for getting him back in free agency this summer.

They were talking about the three players still in China and where they are going. We all know Chandler is going back to Denver. Kenny Smith joked and said J.R Smith is going to Alcatraz which made me laugh so hard but in reality he’ll probably go the Spurs or something. As for Aaron Brooks, they said he’ll probably go back to Phoenix but Knicks could make him an offer. I highly doubt it though since they have like four PG’s already. Gortat and Frye were really tired at the end of the game which resulted in Gortat’s two mistakes (although I would argue whether it was an offensive foul) and Frye being practically out of the game. Lopez was, again, really, really bad in this game, but maybe Gentry could have tried the Morris-Warrick combo to give the two big guys at least 3-4 minutes rest. It couldn’t have been worse on the defensive end and Hakim is always a threat in the offense.

by Sillmarillion on Feb 10, 2012 12:56 AM MST reply actions

If we're going to proclaim Gortat an All-Star we need to scrutinize him like one

He had a decent game but he lost it down the stretch. The no-finish dunk that lead to two missed free throws, the bricked running hook from the right side, the turnover from the high-post trying to find Channing. Houston should get their props for taking away the Nash-Gortat pick ‘n roll, but if Gortat’s going to be a legit All-Star he needs to make those tough plays.

yea true

he hasnt not been a great finisher at all this season. maybe hes gassed but if thats the case he needs to let gentry know. no point in scoring 20 points if none of them come in the 4th.
he has been lebronesque with his 4th qtr performances. shot not falling, not getting to the hoop for ft’s despite being a good ft shooter. thats why your aren’t in the AS game. maybe hes still young in terms of finding his clutch game. this is the first time hes been the man in his career from the start of the season.

doesnt Hak play good against HOU

i remember him going off last year on them. but yea i think between gortat and frye they logged in 80+ mins. I can understand a little just because the backups were garbage but yea giving warrick a chance wouldnt have hurt.

i also just realized

we still need a starting SG. if Dudley could dribble the ball for more than 2 seconds the load on nash would be lifted. Dudleys a SF who would be best as a backup 2-3. Id say go to Redd but he cant play a lick of D and is only worth starting if hes scoring 20ppg to offset the bad day. is there no way we can trade RoLo to Memphis in some sort of package with a 2nd rounder and maybe take back a bad contract or give them anyone not named gortat or nash? Im sure they dont want to lose mayo for nothing since they aren’t going to resign him. put mayo on this team and were a 5-7 seed easy. then just let Frye and Morris get backup C duty

Nah

Dudley is great. Nash just plays that way.

No way to reduce his load – none at all. We need a better backup so he can get more rest.

I found this game excellent

Of course our bench look putrid but that is only because their bench was better than their starters, but we play quite better and the only piece we really miss this game was Gortat, besides we are on our way I guess I look it up like a series

Every 5 game is a series, so we are currently at 3-1, you don’t have to win 5 straigh games, you need to win 2 out of 3 and 5 out of 8, that is how you reach playoff if you’re team is bad.

That's an excellent way to look at it Lino.

Break the schedule down into 5-game series. 3-1 in a playoff series is one win away from advancing, so I’ll take that.

Re-sign Nash

Make him a very fine offer. Sign Dragic in the offseason, and jettison Brown, Telfair and Price.

by Grockcubs on Feb 10, 2012 5:23 AM MST reply actions

the goran situation is sad, but understandable.

i disagree with everyone who is retroactively castigating the FO for making that deal. At the time that the trade occurred, Goran had had a thoroughly inconsistent season and was beginning to look like a bit of a head case. we were trying to make a push for a playoff spot, so babby pulled the trigger.

for as long as he’s been in the nba, goran has been the kind of guy who has needed to feel secure and comfortable in order to contribute anything of value. i think that the changes that occurred over the 2010 offseason really hurt him. he was having to deal with the dual challenges of adapting to a different group of running mates (that didn’t complement his skill set NEARLY as well), coupled with unrealistically high expectations after his magical performance in the playoffs. it was almost like you could see him wilting under the stress and the pressure.

i, for one, am happy for the kid. he’s always been a nice guy with a great work ethic, and i’m glad that he’s now in a situation where he can thrive.

and who knows…maybe one day his path will cross with ours again. i’m not sure, but i think at some point in the past the suns drafted a point guard, traded him a few years later, and then he came back to phoenix and played pretty well…

I disagree

The Front office panicked and rushed a trade. Goodness the guy is 25 years old, traded him when he was 24. He was inconsistent for HALF of a season. Dumb trade that also gave up a 1st round pick on a team that could use youth and depth. Just another mistake by this front office.

by Grockcubs on Feb 10, 2012 9:49 AM MST up reply actions

He was more than inconsistent.

He was horrible. Just terrible. His inability to do much of anything positive when Steve took a seat lost us quite a few games (why does that sound familiar?).

Brooks was a past MIP winner who showed the ability to put points on the board (something we desperately needed in our 2nd unit) who had fallen out of favor in HOU (Kyle Lowry is not a bad player at all).

Both players needed fresh starts. It worked out for them, while the lockout killed any chance of Brooks working out here.

He was playing well until we were forced to put Channing in the starting lineup

Because they thought Hedo could play Powerforward. One bad move led to another. It was just a terrible chain of reaction. At least the Gortat trade turned out well, but now we really need a backup PG and scorer.

Beav (and others who do this, including our overlord) have to stop blaming other players for Goran’s poor play. Nash plays well no matter who’s around him. So do most good players. They get their stats and play well regardless of who’s around them. It’s the +/- and the wins that are affected.

Dragic played terribly last season no matter who was around him. You have to give him “credit” for that.

I’m not, I just don’t remember Dragic playing bad when he was playing with Frye.

I still don't think his play justified a trade.

48 games last year and he gets traded. Sorry that is not enough to move a guy who was an extremely valuable piece of the WCF team. Plus at 24 is to young to give up.

by Grockcubs on Feb 10, 2012 1:45 PM MST up reply actions

It was a panic move

But it was a new FO who had no ties to the guy and he was playing TERRIBAD. I know it was only for a short time overall but they were just trying to improve the team. I personally believed that Brooks was a better player than Dragic is. We can’t really compare them because Brooks is over in China but if he had stepped up his game for us this season I think the only gripe could be the 1st round pick (which I was not a fan of giving up, otherwise I have no problems).

The lesson of Goran…patience

should this lesson extend to robin?

or have we been sufficiently patient?

We've been patient long enough

His contract is nearly over. He is what he is. An inconsistent, injury prone, backup center who at best can be a decent starting center as long as he’s got a good PF and some rebounding wings next to him.

Random musings.

I generally agree with the direct correlation between Frye’s play and the team’s success, but last night was an aberration.

Frye lead the team in scoring (including 4 three pointers), rebounding, steals, and blocks (21, 10, 2, 2) yet the team still lost and failed to score 90 points.

Nash can be unselfish to a fault at times. Playing last night on the Mark West principle didn’t help the team. I’m sure I could construct an aesthetically pleasing model that depicts how the Suns are more successful this year when Nash shoots and scores more, but I won’t because it seems pretty obvious to me.

One clear takeaway is that a player who was on the court for 35 minutes and finished the game 7-7 from the field didn’t take enough shots.

I understand that Nash is trying to create the easiest shot possible for his team, so depending on how the defense plays he will pass to give his teammate the easier shot. What Nash needs to understand (in my feeble estimation) is that sometimes the difficult closely contested shot for him is still easier than the semingly more makeable attempt for one of his less talented teammates.

I think Nash needs to force the issue for himself on offense, more in general, and especially situationally.

As MM eruditely delineated above, the offense ran through Nash on 8 of the last 10 possessions – one Gortat turned the ball over before the team got into its set and the other they were (apparently?) unable to get it back to Nash off an inbounds play. 8 possessions and Nash takes 1 shot when he hasn’t missed all night….

This would have been a big win. The Suns could have pulled within 2 games of Utah and Portland for the 8th seed. Instead the face a two game trip to California that could result in them coming home in 14th place.

Securing home victories against the teams the Suns are competing with for a playoff spot is vital. These are the types of squandered opportunities the team will look back on with regret if they fall just a little short of qualifying for the postseason.

I think he knows

Because he used to do it all the time. When he saw that no one else could score, he’d take over. Now he doesn’t do that so often. I wonder if it’s just age. Perhaps, by the end of the game he just doesn’t have the stamina to do it?

I think it is everyone else

Smart to try to limit the PnR – Lakers killed us when that was all we did earlier in the year. Sadly, the other guys were just bad. Gortat looked gassed – 40+ minutes will do that to you – and the charges were weird. It was like we were trying to prove we don’t live and die by the jumpshot when, really, we do.

On the plus side tho, Houston’s offence wasn’t much better, and if Gortat hits 2 FTs instead of clanking them, the situation would have been different, as a 3 point lead is less scary than 5.

Ultimately, we have to embrace that we are Nash, and design plays where he has the ball the whole time, and let him win, or lose, us the game, because everyone else will only lose games.

I agree

But I still think late game fatigue still limits a 38 year old Nash in some way.
