Why the Suns Need Peyton Manning to be a Cardinal

Gravitation is the tendency of all bodies to be attracted to one another. This is because bodies exert forces on each other. The earth exerts a force on you, you are attracted to it. You exert a much smaller force on the earth, it is attracted to you. You also exert a gravitational force on other nearby objects, and vice versa, but the force of the earth overwhelms these attractions. The point of this is that if you get close to Steve Nash he would actually be attracted to you (in a purely physics sense, of course). Actually, that’s not the point. Here’s the point. (Right after you jump and earth’s gravitational force pulls you back down)

I think that star players also exert a gravitational force. The bigger the star, the greater the magnitude of the force. Stars tend to like other stars. Peyton Manning is as big of a star as they come. I think that he could actually ameliorate the perception of Phoenix as a destination for players in all sports. I think it is possible that the force that Peyton Manning exerts might help the Suns recruit their next franchise player.

With the Suns planning on hitting the free agency market hard and heavy, wouldn’t any positive distortion of perception help? Isn’t it possible that a budding star in the NBA could look at Phoenix and think (even subliminally) if it’s good enough for Peyton Manning it’s good enough for me? The Suns image has taken a couple of blows (some possibly undeserved) and this could put the market back in a glowing light.

There could be consequences to the signing, also. Is it possible that Manning is too Brobdingnagian for the Phoenix market. Might he blot out the rest of the Arizona sports scene and obscure the Suns from their fanbase? Will the Suns become back-paged even further and ignored completely? Could the move be seen as another retirement community addition? Could this make Phoenix look more appealing, but only to senior citizen athletes?

What are your thoughts? Am I just scrutinizing the situation a little too much, creating conspiracies out of shadows, or is there some substance to this line of thinking? Anything related to the Manning/Cards/Suns discussion is fair game (I think the enormity of the topic merits a little cross sport banter). This is not an open invitation to discuss Suns trade rumors (you know who you are).
