Fantasy Factory

First off I apologize for creating another fanpost involving free-rostergrazing (free agency=free grazing, trading=roste...oh whatever), but I will be delving into many different scenarios. I've seen a lot of posts involving what we should do this offseason to improve, most revolving around Eric Gordon so let me address this. He is a premier player in this league, the centerpiece in the trade that shipped out CP3, and anything we can offer Gordon will be a bargain for New Orleans, thus I believe Gordon stays. Even still, people talk about him as if he is on the block. I'm not saying the FO shouldn't kick the tires, so to speak. But nobody should be expecting to see Gordon in a Suns uniform. So with that said, I plan on looking at the most definite unlikely scenarios (minus Gordon, since that has been hashed to death), to the likely ones, all the way to the what if. As in what if Nash doesn't come back (GASP!).

THE DWIGHT SCENARIO

I know, I know. There's no way Dwight signs an extension here! blah blah blah. Did you see the title of this post? Besides, unlike Gordon, It is heavily rumored that Dwight will indeed ask for a trade, has shown interest in playing with Nash, and if this scenario fell into place, it would be hard for him to say no.

Amnesty (or better yet trade for an exemption or 2nd round pick) Childress
D12 for Gortat, Morris, Warrick, 2013 + 2015 first rounders (D12 signs extension)
trade Frye + 2012 first rounder to Utah for Millsap (Millsap signs extension)
sign Ray Allen to 2 year/14mil contract (back loaded 6 first, 8 second)
re-sign Nash 3yrs/15mil
re-sign Hill 2yrs/8mil
re-sign Redd 2yrs/5mil

LINEUP
PG Nash, Telfair
SG Allen, Redd
SF Hill, Dudley

C Howard, Lopez

SALARIES:

Milsap 8.6
Howard 19.5

Fill out the rest of the roster as you wish. The following year you do another sign and trade to get Harden for Allen. OK will have to let either Harden or Ibaka walk. All signs and feelings point to Harden, thus they might do this so they get a replacement for the year, then cap relief following, instead of just letting him walk via offer sheet. Who knows? That would give us a nice nucleus of Harden, Howard, Millsap, and Dudley locked up going forward, Albeit not much room for anything else. But for 2013-14 you would have the starting lineup of Nash, Harden, Hill, Millsap, and Dwight. YIKES!

Two other routes to go instead of Millsap would be:

1. Sign Ilyasova via FA for 7mil/yr and find a trade partner for Frye getting back a pick or trade exemption 2. Trade Lopez and Frye (or Chilly then amnesty Frye) for Josh Smith. I would LOVE Smith, but if we somehow got Howard then Smith would be too expensive to sign to an extension AND go after Harden. I think Harden/Howard would make a better combo than Smith/Howard. Especially if Harden/Howard were playing with Millsap. Also with this we would lose Lopez, so we would need to find a backup C to anchor a not-so-potent bench. Lopez is about as good a backup C as youre gonna get.

Lastly, you could replace Allen with Crawford, but I believe he will be looking for a longer contract, for more money. I think Allen is a much better player, even as old as he is.

THE SMITH SCENARIO

OK, on to Josh Smith. I included him above, but here he will be the marquee addition. I do like Smith, although I believe his asking price will be too high for my taste. Also, I am aware that getting Smith would not occur until December 15th with any trade including Lopez, but since Lopez is what ATL would covet (I think), Those are the only trades I will talk about. We would just have to roll with what we got for a month and a half.

Amnesty Warrick
Suns trade Lopez+Childress for Josh Smith
sign Ray Allen to 2 year/14mil contract (back loaded 6 first, 8 second)
re-sign Nash 3yrs/15mil
re-sign Hill 2yrs/8mil
re-sign Redd 2yr/5mil

I do not include picks here because I don't think they are warranted. As with Harden in Oklahoma, ATL cannot keep JJ, Hortford, AND Smith. Smith will command around 14-16mil/yr to keep even though I don't think he should get more than Hortford. If I was personally running ATL I would trade or amnesty Johnson before parting with Smith. JJ makes a lot more and does less IMO. That said, I believe they part with Smith. They get their pure C in Lopez to move Hortford back to PF, plus a player they liked before and will see playing time there. Basically 2 for 1, at less salary. Again, the following year Suns push a sign and trade Harden for Allen. That would give OK $8mil in expiring salary, plus the talents of Allen for a year.

OR trade 2...

Amnesty Frye
Sign Batum to 10mil/yr
Suns trade Lopez+Childress for Josh Smith
sign Ray Allen to 2 year/14mil contract (back loaded 6 first, 8 second)
re-sign Nash 3yrs/15mil
re-sign Hill 2yrs/8mil

I don't like this as much, as I feel it pushes Harden out of the picture possibly. We could trade Gortat for Harden and not pick-up Warrick's team option (not that we would in any scenario). No Center= bad joo-joo

THE LIKELY SCENARIO (with Nash and Hill staying)

This is gonna piss people off, but it is what I feel is going to be a likely reality. So here it goes...

Amnesty Childress
Trade Warrick for an exception or a Hershey bar
TRY and sign Gordon to an offer sheet, He signs someone else's, the Hornets match
Sign Batum to an offer sheet, Portland matches
Don't even look at Dwight Howard, Lakers get him, they win championship (I just threw up).
Try to trade for Millsap, Utah wants a king's ransom, we tell them to suck a fat one
Same with Josh Smith
Don't make eye contact with Allen or Garnett
Sign Crawford to a 3yr/21mil deal (7 per)
Sign Ilyasova to an 4yr/32mil deal (8 per)
Re-sign Nash to a 3yr/25mil deal, going 7.25mil to 8.5mil to 9.25 mil
Re-sign Hill to a 1yr/5.5 mil deal (he says he wants to retire after)
Re-sign Lopez to a 4yr/20mil deal (5 per)

LINEUP
PG Nash, Telfair
SG Crawford, Redd
SF Hill, Dudley
PF Ilyasova, Morris
C Gortat, Lopez, Frye
Plus draft pick

SALARIES:
Nash 7.25
Crawford 7
Redd 2.5
Telfair 1.5
Hill 5.5
Dudley 4.25
Ilyasova 8
Gortat 7.3
Morris 2
Lopez 5
Frye 6
TOTAL 56.3

I hate Crawford's contract (I hate Crawford, actually) and hopefully the following year we offer him up to OK for Harden and they bite at a chance to replace Harden with a cheaper (7mil vs 12-14mil to keep Harden) contract and replace Harden's bench scoring. Even though its an obvious downgrade overall, I think they wouldn't hate the return. Also we would have to find a trade partner for Frye. The sooner the better on that one. Heck maybe OK would want Frye instead of Crawford. I'd do that first. That would give us a starting lineup of Nash, Harden, Dudley, Ilyasova, and Gortat with a bench of Crawford, Morris, Lopez, 2012 Draft pick and the 2013 draft pick going into the 2013-14 season. Not horrible (especially if our draft picks turn out to be decent), but not great.

And lastly....

NASH BOLTS FOR MIAMI

Another real possibility that most people here don't think is likely is Nash going to visit another team and never comes back. That also means Hill follows. Double wammie, we just got kicked in the fannie (and nutsies). So if this happens, what do we do? Who do we go after? One possiblility is that we try and trade for a high profile player (Bosh/Melo anyone?). Although I hope we would be smart about it and maybe do something less spectacular and better for the team as a whole. like this:

Amnesty Childress
Trade Warrick for an exception or a Hershey bar
Trade Frye for Diop + 2nd rounder
Re-sign Lopez to a 4yr/20mil (5 per)
Sign Batum to a 4yr/32mil (8per), Portland doesn't match
Sign Ilyasova to an 4yr/32mil (8 per)
Sign Allen to a 3yr/20mil (8mil, 6mil, 6mil)
Sign Lin to a 4yr/20mil (5 per), NY can't match

LINEUP
PG Lin, Telfair
SG Allen, Redd
SF Batum, Dudley
PF Ilyasova, Morris
C Gortat, Lopez, Diop
Plus draft pick

SALARIES:
Lin 5
Allen 8
Redd 2.5
Telfair 1.5
Batum 8
Dudley 4.25
Ilyasova 8
Gortat 7.3
Morris 2
Lopez 5
Diop 7.3
TOTAL 58.85

The following year sign and trade Harden for Allen (yes, again). The Diop trade was purely a salary dump (plus a pick) in
anticipation to get Harden. So for 2013-14 going forward we would have Lin, Harden, Batum, Ilyasova, and Gortat with
a bench of Dudley, Morris, Lopez, 2012 draft pick, 2013 draft pick. All on decent, tradeable contracts if the right
opportunity came up to improve.

Please excuse any typos, mathmatical errors, etc. This was compiled at 4am and I'm tired. Also, I am not a lawyer who wrote the collective bargaining agreement, so I'm not sure if the contracts I suggested completely work under it. Just rough numbers, rough trades. While I know there are a lot more free agents and players that can be targeted, I only talked about a few players that I believe will give the Suns the best chances moving forward.
