The Case for Lou Williams

John Mitchell: Lou Williams agent Leon Rose confirms that Williams has opted out of the final year of his deal.

There have been rumours that the Suns are interested in adding Jamal Crawford this Summer via Free Agency. What do the Suns get in Jamal? A high-character, scoring SG veteran with the ability to share some ball-handling with Steve and Bassy.
So, why Lou?

He pretty much gives the Suns the same. He's reportedly high-character, he's a scoring undersized SG who can create his own shot, can share ball-handling duties, can shoot the 3 pointer and has some experience in the League.

The biggest downside is he's probably being overpaid somewhere. I wouldn't mind paying him something around $28M/4 years, but he'll probably get more from some other team. Jamal has that advantage, he'll probably only get a two-year deal and be cheaper, which would keep our flexibility.

However, if we're rebuilding through the draft like the FO's been saying, it's in the draft we're looking for our star. So we have to provide the team with good role players, so that the star can arrive and be in perfect position to deliver. He's way younger than Jamal, is better at the things both does and would eventually be a good piece if we're trading for someone like Harden.

This said, we try to buy a late 1st rounder from Boston or OKC, like Alex said we could do. With the 13th we pursue Kendall Marshall. I like both Austin Rivers and Dion Waiters, but I can see why we wouldn't stick with both. Kendall would be safer, and I can see him be a great point in the league. He proved to be more athletic than people said in the Combine and is a big guy.

With the other pick we draft Jeff Taylor. I really love this guy. I feel seniors are usually undervalued 'cause they are older and have less potential to build on, but he's yet another high character guy that is NBA ready, added a 3pt range this season and does what we are also getting from Grant, he guards the best player from the other team at Vanderbilt. We also amnesty Childress to open him the space in the team. I like Josh, but it's seems obvious to me that he won't be relevant to us.

So, where would this leave us? Even better, where does this leave Steve Nash? If Lou Williams is our "big signing", he'd probably say we didn't meet his needs and leave to try and win a ring. And honestly, I wouldn't be that bothered. I love Steve. He's the reason I, a portuguese guy (where the Suns are barely known among NBA Teams), started rooting for this team in the first place. But now I'm more of a Suns' fan than a Steve's fan, and while I'll always love him, I understand he wants something we can't give him right now. We sign Brooks and Lopez if no one is overpaying them and not much else. I'd add we sign Terrence Williams to a minimum, he'll probably be available and I must say I love the guy and what he brings to the table.

Back to the point, he'd leave. What about Grant? Would he leave with him? Would he stay with the team knowing most of the other teams won't give him as much and treat him as well? I don't know, really. But I think that doesn't change much.

The roster:

(Brooks) / Marshall / Bassy

Dudley / Lou Williams / T-Will

Hill / Jeff Taylor / T-Will

Frye / Kieff / Warrick

Gortat / Lopez / Frye

If Hill leaves, we sign Brandon Rush to a similar deal we gave Shannon last year:

(Brooks) / Marshall / Bassy

Rush / Lou Williams / T-Will

Dudley / Jeff Taylor / T-Will

Frye / Kieff / Warrick

Gortat / Lopez / Frye

With this we'd suck next year. We likely get a top 10, maybe even better pick in the next Summer. And we can try to finally get our star or try to lure Harden out of OKC, because despite we sucked, we have the right pieces, it's the star-power that's missing.
