So there has been a lot of conversation about what the possible sign and trade for Eric Gordon would be if the Hornets decide to facilitate it. Ridiculous proposals have come from both sides. Chill, Hak and Telfair for Gordon. Gortat, Marshall and 2 first rounders for Gordon. More than likely though if a sign and trade is agreed upon the two will meet in the middle, which means either Gortat or Marshall would be involved in the deal. NOLA needs a center or a point guard, and would want at least one of the two back. So which should it be?
It can be argued that much of Gortats production came from the spoon feeding of Nash and the fact that the offensive system the Suns ran left him as the only big available to rebound. However Gortat put up great numbers for the majority of the season and has been a huge boon for the Suns since his acquisition. He is a proven commodity and has high value on the market, therefore we could feasibly give NOLA less assets in a package that included Gortat.
Obviously there is a lot of potential with Marshall. He is touted as being the best passing guard in recent drafts and could blossom into a superstar. There is also the possibility that he never becomes more than a serviceable player as well though. We already recently signed Goran for four years with the implication he is the starter, and have Telfair as a nice back up. Is Marshall going to be better than Goran in four years? Also consider since Marshall is an unproven NBA player any sign and trade with him as the center piece will be packaged with more draft picks.
Finally I would like to talk about what the respective positions would look like if we traded either player. For the sake of this argument I am assuming Beasly is starting at the 3, so if we traded...
We would have a lineup of
This lineup could be tweaked to have Beasly start at PF with Morris at backup and Frye used as strictly a backup center. The one thing I think many people have forgoten this past season is how well Lopez and Dragic played together in 09-10. I know Gortat and Dragic could work on it but I would venture to say that Lopez and Dragic might be better together. They came up together in this organization from the same draft and showed great chemistry when paired together in the past.
We would have a lineup of
Once again we could start Beas at the 4 if that is what the coaching staff decides is best. Hell Miami just won a championship playing Bosch at center so who knows. This lineup is better for the win now side. Even if Dragic ends up playing better with Lopez you still have Gortat which is a great one two punch at center. Also there is no guarantee on how well Marshall develops. If he becomes the next Nash then we look like fools, however if he flops then his stock will go nowhere but down from here.
