#3: The three-way trade for Wesley Johnson and a protected first round pick

In Johnson, the Suns acquired a young scorer with tons of potential. Johnson is coming off an impressive run in the Las Vegas Summer League and has potential to be a solid contributor off the bench. He poses a threat from outside and could serve a great role by providing a spark late in games.

Another reason this move was a win for the Suns is that it gives them some financial flexibility in the 2013 NBA offseason. By sending Hakim Warrick and Brook Lopez to the New Orleans Hornets and absorbing the contracts of Brad Miller and Jerome Dyson, the Suns become nearly $9 million under the 2012-2013 NBA salary cap and remain well under the Luxury Tax threshold. Gaining this fiscal maneuverability is a vital step for the Suns in their rebuilding process. The Suns become even cheaper in the 2013-2014 season and lookout for them to use this money to go after FA’s such as James Harden and Josh Smith.

#2: Drafting the Kendall Marshall

Kendall Marshall was the best true point guard in the 2012 NBA Draft Class. Marshall possesses fantastic vision and an elite passing game. Despite a wrist injury cutting his 2011-2012 college season short, the Tar Heel floor general averaged 9.8 assists through 36 games and averaged less than three turnovers per game. Marshall can certainly be the point guard of the future for the Suns.

#1: The free agent signings

One important issue with the Suns during the past few seasons has been depth. They have been playing role players as starters and this has hindered their ability to remain competitive in key games. To counteract this, the Suns went out and acquired Michael Beasley in a low risk, 3-year deal worth $18 million. The Suns also signed what I believe to be the steal of the offseason. Picking up Louis Scola after the Rockets amnestied him gives the Suns another big man to compliment Marcin Gortat. The most notable deal in the Suns’ free agent acquisitions was the signing of Goran Dragic in attempt to fill the shoes of Steve Nash, while giving Marshall some time to develop. Dragic, with a 4-year contract worth $34 million, will presumably be the starting point guard for the Suns at the beginning of the season and will look to continue his solid playing that he ended the season with last year.
