The Rudy Gay discussion

Continuining on from the game thread discussion about whether or not Rudy Gay is a phony all-star (I'll call this the Michael Beasley mirage) or a fringe all-star. Mike Motherwell and his profound statistical knowledge has certainly made the case by making Gay look like an inefficient shot-chucker and a mediocre defender. I have argued that while Gay has played like garbage this season, Jared Dudley has played better than Gay for a good part of this season, I still believe very much so that Gay is an excellent number two. This flow chart points out that the Grizzlies are prone to taking shots in late game situations but it does not mention the spacing on the court. The Grizzlies have dedicated themselves to a pound the rock game plan which has relegated Rudy Gay, a super athletic player with slightly above average ball handles who is at his best driving the ball to the hoop, to the perimeter as he watches low post beasts in Randolph and Gasol go to work. It is a pretty well known fact that Gay is not the best jump shooter despite excellent mechanics and ability to shoot over people and his 3pfg% leaves a lot to be desired. That said, Rudy Gay has performed very well when operating as the Grizzlies' Franchise player in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012; the latter year saw Gay lead his Grizzlies to a franchise best record and a tie for third place in the West in the absence of the superhuman version of Zach Randolph who dominated the Spurs in the 2011 Postseason. I have made the fan post so you can discuss your feelings about this discussion.
