In a recent tweet, Comcast SportsNet's Ric Bucher qualifies his previous statement that, if the players had voted, then Thunder Dan Majerle would have been elected as new head coach. He says that a second "anonymous source" did not dispute that but stated that among the core players, most were in favor of Lindsey Hunter over Majerle.
Another key revelation in the article is that, allegedly the belief within the organization is that, if Hunter does not pan out, Sarver is ready to purge the entire front office.
Here is the tweet, as found on this link.

I reported a team source saying that if the Suns' players voted, they would've picked Dan Majerle as their choice
to succeed Alvin Gentry, not Lindsey Hunter. A second team source doesn't categorically dispute that but said more core players were in favor of Hunter than Majerle. The results since Hunter has taken over supports that. The Suns are now 3-4 under Hunter with signature wins over the Clippers and Lakers. Seeing them up close against the Warriors Saturday night -- playing on the second night of a back-to-back -- they look like anything but a team going through the motions or playing to spite their coach. All that said, there's a sense within the Suns' organization that if Hunter doesn't show he has coaching chops, owner Robert Sarver might be inclined to continue the purge and clean out his front office as well.
All in all, one can argue that the Hunter Regime so far could be considered a conservative success. The players seem more engaged and aware of their roles. Beasley sounds more confident and it has been translating on the box score. And, hello, Kendall Marshall and Diante Garrett, welcome to getting some burn in games before bench clearing time.
One can also not discount the benefit of quelling dissension in the ranks. Right or wrong, the elimination of a Front Office / Coaching Staff war cannot be underestimated in improving morale and removing distractions that were slowly eroding the team away.
