I was watching a New Orleans summer league game today and saw austin rivers. He was the 10th pick in the draft last year, but had an incredibly disappointing rookie year. The Pelicans have a 3-guard rotation featuring Holiday, Gordon, and Tyreke Evans and it's doubtful Rivers will ever get meaningful playing time there.
My idea: Package Gortat(they desperately need a center after trading Robin Lopez) and Beasley(Dump that horrible salary) and take back Rivers and a future unprotected 1st round pick.
Why the Suns do it: Mcdonuts is in asset gathering mode. He doesn't care about wins and losses because he understands we're developing talent leading towards a trade or actually using that talent on the court. Rivers is a prospect that has a lot of upside and didn't fit in well in NO. Gortat has been out the door since Nash went to LA, and any opportunity to get Beasley out of the locker room and off the books shouldn't be overlooked. Also, that future 1st round pick...well, everyone likes 1st round picks.
Why the Pels do it: They are in "win now" mode(meaning aiming for the 6-8 seed). Davis is probably their starting center and that does not bode well when they're facing teams with a C weighing more than 180lbs. Bringing in Gortat fills an immediate need in the starting lineup and helps solidify their playoff bid. Rivers would never have gotten playing time with the new Pelicans so they're not losing anything there. Beasley can be the second scorer coming off the bench(with Tyreke Evans) and should look alright playing against team's 2nd string players. Their current starting 3 is AF Aminu so SF is a real weakness on the team. This puts the Pels in firm playoff contention while not blowing up their salary cap space when they need to resign Davis.
I understand their might be better deals out there, so rather than just say, "I hate this trade," suggest something better(and realistic). Or give this trade a big thumbs up.
