I am glad optimism has rebounded for the Suns fans with the change in the FO and particularly the trade with the Clippers.
But what if the trade was not designed by McGenius? What if the trade happened because Alvin Gentry
liked Dudley and wanted him on the team and because Doc Rivers
is familiar with McDonough so called him?
I will know if McDonough is really McGenius if he can convert Gortat into a starting player that we can build with. Then he should leverage the weakness the other teams have and trade to get pieces that build our team. Example:
- Detroit badly needs a PG and a SG. Trade Marshall (or Bledsoe or Dragic if that is the correct decision) + Shannon Brown
+ maybe Scola for Monroe (or Drummond) + a 2nd round draft pick (and/or the right to swap a round 1 pick with their pick in 2014 and 2015)
- Cleveland lacks a real Center and a SF. Varejao is really a PF (who has only played about 82 games in the last 3 seasons). They have Tristan Thompson
and now drafted a Bennett, a PF at #1 in this draft. So can McD convince the Cavs to trade Tristan Thompson + right to swap round 1 draft picks in 2014 (and maybe 2015) for Gortat and Caron Butler
? Butler is a expiring contract who can help them immediately in their quest to be in the playoff’s. Plus this can help them get above the salary cap floor and still leaving the freedom for next year.
- Hate to do this but if the Pelicans agree trade as they badly need the cap space, Eric Gordon
for couple expiring contracts and others (Butler, Frye or maybe if he is really good, sell them Beasley) who can help them and round 1 draft picks (since Gordon does not want to be there and has a BAD attitude that his trade value is way LOW).
These are just examples. But, as I have mentioned the leader is one who can make trades happen that are in the team’s favor. Like the way Danny Ainge has taken a bold decision. Like the way Portland is drafting, signing-up players (Thomas Robinson
for 2 draft picks and how they recovered them back by picking up Lopez for a VERY reasonable contract – with the Center being a position of need).
Another such leader is Ujiri. Love the way he has taken charge of the Raptors
and made trades and is NOT under selling his players. I hope that is what McDonough is doing. But timing is everything.
And only time will tell if he is active or just being driven by others.
