So one of the worst-kept secrets this season is the ongoing saga of Emeka Okafor and his contract. By virtue of being an expiring, it's inherently valuable to any team looking for some cap relief. However, this recent article by Adrian Wojnarowski has got me wondering... what would you guys think about using Okafor and a draft pick or two to acquire Jeff Green and Keith Bogans from the Celtics? Several insiders around the league expect Boston to move Green at some point, so this could make sense for both sides.
(Just as a disclaimer, I'm a casual observer of the Celtics and general fan of the NBA [but particularly OKC], so please don't mistake this as homerism!)
Looking at the Suns roster and knowing the team's uptempo pace of play, I think Green could actually be a pretty useful contributor. Boston is using this season to test-run many of their players to see who can stick and in what roles; halfway through, I think it's become exceedingly obvious that Green is a solid role player - but not a star. However, on this team, he wouldn't need to be "the star" - he could comfortably fit in as a third option behind the Slash Brothers. Though Tucker has stronger 3 point shooting, Green is still a capable shooter from deep and he's very athletic, as one can ascertain from this clip. He's also a reliable defender.
He's got his ups and downs: this is someone who has scored 22, 12, 39, 16, and 8 points in his last five games. That stretch essentially summates his entire career in a nutshell: he's a guy that's a threat either to go off on any given night or not even show up. Regardless, he's still proven his worth as a player and would be a great piece to any team looking to contend, so long as they didn't try to run the offense through him.
Green's got another two years left on his contract for about ~$19 million combined. I honestly don't think that should be much of a concern since he's still fairly young enough at 27 to be a part of the future in Phoenix. Just don't anticipate much growth out of him as he's entering his prime. He did have open-heart surgery back in 2011 to correct an aortic aneurysm, but he's shown no ill effects and has fully recovered.
Thoughts? And I'm aware that acquiring Bogans and Green would require someone else to be shipped out with Okafor, so would you guys accept that? If so, who would you be willing to trade? Keep in mind that cap savings would be one of the primary reasons Boston would entertain this deal, so they likely wouldn't want anyone with a lengthy contract unless they were a young prospect.
