Dear Steve and Mike,
I know it’s been a miserable year for both of you, and you probably can’t wait for the offseason to start.
But I’m wondering if I could ask you both for one little favor.
Tonight the Lakers are playing the Memphis Grizzlies. It’s a meaningless game for you guys, but for some of your former teammates and Suns fans who were so loyal to you both when you were in Phoenix, a Lakers victory is the difference between the Suns at least having a chance of making the playoffs -- and being virtually eliminated with a loss.
So maybe for one night, and for old time’s sake, Steve, you can pull out some of that magic that made you so exciting to watch while you were in a Suns uniform –and play the best game you’ve ever played in a Lakers uniform.
I’m not even sure that you are going to be suiting up. But if you are, I'm thinking 30 points, 15 assists, and 3 steals. You have my permission to do it in 26 minutes so you don’t get too tired. I realize that you are a little older and more banged up now than you were when you were playing for the Suns.
I think that performance should be enough to give the Lakers a 10-point victory over the Grizzlies, 119-109…and give the Suns playoff hopes some new life.
Maybe you can dish some assists to former Suns player Wesley Johnson, too. It would be nice if he could help his former team as well.
And Dan, I know the circumstances were not the best when you bolted Phoenix for that high-priced contract in New York. But I do think this year’s Suns team is the closest thing to a D’Antoni-type team that the Suns have had since you left – and it would be really nice if you could help this team vault into the playoffs. They don’t always put up a shot in 7 seconds or less, but they certainly are more offensive minded than the prior few Suns teams. So I think you’d be proud to help them get into the playoffs…and maybe even create some noise in the first round. If you beat the Grizzlies tonight, I promise I won’t boo you when you return to Phoenix on the slim chance that you come back as the coach of the Lakers.
Good luck tonight. Believe it or not, I’ll be rooting hard for the Lakers!
