Youtube has a series of videos entitled How it Should Have Ended. They are short, animated videos showing the viewer how they felt a certain movie should have ended. Some are quite fun. With the Suns victory over the Thunder last night, which, for most, officially removed the bad taste left in our mouths from losing to the Lakers, I thought I would like to write up a HISHE for the Western Conference. Actually this is a HIWITE - How I Want it to End.
Call me a sadist if you want, but I would love to see a Suns/Spurs playoff matchup. It has nothing to do with individual match ups, it is just that Suns/Spurs playoff basketball is wonderful basketball. Basically for me, it will be Suns Vs Spurs the Sequel, with our band of ragtag no-namers taking on the ever-enduring evil empire. High quality drama! Though we have a newer team, I cannot help but to think the playoff battle(s) will be very similar. And judging by how the game goes on Friday, the Suns may match up well against them.
It was commented that for the Suns to make the playoffs, they can virtually go 3-2, as long as they win their April 14 game against Memphis and Memphis loses at least another game. If the season were to play out this way, then the Suns would be in and have that first round match against San Antonio. This makes Wednesday a pretty pivotal day. Assuming Dallas wins the day before in Utah, they will be sitting at 48-31. Memphis needs to lose to Miami, and the Suns need to win against New Orleans. If this were to happen, their respective records will be 45-33, and 47-31 and the Suns will be 2 games ahead with four games remaining. Here is how I would want it to end from that point on.
At this point, it may not matter too much how Dallas does. Friday, Phoenix beats San Antonio and Memphis defeats Philadelphia. Then the Suns play the second end of their back-to-back against Dallas on Saturday. Regardless of how Dallas does Thursday against the Spurs, a win against the Suns should help them clinch the 7th seed. Even if the Suns finish with the same record as Dallas, Dallas wins the tiebreaker by virtue of the head to head matchup. So Phoenix is sitting at 48-32, Dallas is 49-32, and Memphis is 46-33 with a Sunday night game at the Lakers. The Grizzlies winning that game will basically set up a winner take all "playoff" game against the Suns on Monday. Since Memphis at this point is one game back and has the tie-breaker, the Suns must win this game. And since this is hypothetical, the Suns do win and they clinch the final playoff spot. The Suns can actually rest their players against Sacramento, if they choose to. Now in theory, the Suns could win that final game against the Kings and Dallas loses, which would vault Phoenix up to 7th and completely destroy my scenario, but at this point we would all be happy that the Suns are in the playoffs.
Unfortunately Memphis is knocked out and frankly all three teams deserve to make the playoffs. The other scenario, that could happen is that Memphis wins out, finishing 50-32, Phoenix wins the rest of their games, minus the game against Memphis, finishing at 50-32 as well and Dallas finishes 49-33, knocking them out of the playoffs. Thus the Suns will maintain their playoff matchup against the Spurs. Whatever happens in reality, the Suns just need to take care of business. Winning as many of their final five games as they can would put them in the best position possible.
Regardless of what happens, this will be considered a successful season by many. While I agree with this sentiment, I would love to see the Suns in the playoffs again. I mean, they got new jerseys and everything.
