NBA Free Agency targets for Phoenix Suns: Melo, Gay, Hayward, Deng and Tucker

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

In today's league, (advanced) stats play a more and more important role. While being no substitute for actually watching the games and players, they can offer valuable additional insight.

So in an effort to provide further insight for the ongoing debates, this post presents a wide array of advanced stats on the four main small forward free agents: Carmelo Anthony, Rudy Gay (if he opts out), Gordon Hayward (restricted free agent) and Luol Deng. Besides the advanced data, this post contains no analysis or opinions of mine as to whom, if any, should be pursued, since the post is already quite long as it is.

I used data/stats from mysynergysports.com (not free, but very well worth the money imo), nba.stats.com (free, and very useful) and basketball-reference.com (free, and also very useful).

Luol Deng's stats are from Cleveland, unless specified otherwise. Rudy Gay's stats are from Sacramento, unless specified otherwise. Carmelo Anthony's stats are not differentiated between playing the SF and PF positions.

I also included Paul George as a "control group"/yardstick, and occassionally the statistical "best" player in certain areas. I also added Suns' PJ Tucker to make it easier to see what kind of an upgrade would each of the 4 players represent for the Suns and whether it'd be, considering everything, worth it.

As always, I apologize in advance for any errors and thank you for any corrections. Thanks also for your time, comments and hopefully your votes. I hope you will enjoy the reading and that the data provided will be useful in (re)shaping your opinions on these players.

Conclusion

What are your ideas on what's the best option for the small forward position? Which player would you like to have on the team the most? And at what cost? Are you willing to risk getting Rudy Gay and then him regressing after what was essentially his contract year? How much would you be ok with Phoenix paying him? Is Hayward worth the max? How better for the Suns is Deng than Tucker, if at all? Or is the way to go to trade up in the draft and get a starting SF in the draft?

Thanks again for your time, comments and voting on the poll. I hope you enjoyed reading this post.
