There is a number that keeps coming up whenever we talk about this past season that astounds me. our record with both Dragic and Bledsoe starting together is 23-11. If we do a ton of hypotheticals here and we pretend that Bledsoe was never injured this year, and they continued to play as well as that 23-11 record states that they can... we end the season with a win percentage of (rounding up) .68.
if we finished the season with a .68 win percentage, that is good enough for 55 wins on the season which would have put us in fourth place in the west. fourth place this year was the Rockets, and despite the fact that they left the playoffs in the first round, we can all agree that they are no slackers. with Howard and Harden along with a decent supporting cast, there can be an argument made that they are an elite team.
Lets be hypothetical again here and say that the Suns front office makes absolutely zero changes this off season. The draft comes and goes and we draft some talent and either stash them overseas or put them in the D-league to grow. Lets pretend that there are no trades that fit what we want to do and Horny/McD do nothing. Lets also assume that our players are hungry from last season and during the off season, they do exactly what they promised to do, and get better. Image that Frye comes back and his jumpshot is automatic. Imagine Archie comes back and he is stronger, better, faster, longer. ok maybe not longer, but it sounded good. Just think if Len did the same thing and showed us his potential and why he was drafted. What if Green came back and could dribble the basketball? What if Dragic came back and could shoot free throws at a 90% clip? What if Plumlee shook off his "rookie" jitters and became a 10&10 man? can you honestly say that we would not be elite?
I hear a lot of talk about how much we "need" to get Love or that we need to find that top ten person to get us over the hump of being average. dont we already have those people? if we take a look at one of the most lethal teams in the league right now, we might find some similarities. Dont hate me for saying it, but the Spurs dont really have that x-factor star that everyone looks for. everyone talks about Duncan and Parker and Ginobli, but the only thing that makes them good is their experience. Duncan is not quite the same as he used to be. Ginobli is far too inconsistant, and Dragic is better than Parker nine days out of ten already. And yet, these guys are running away with games because of their supporting cast. Leonard is not an x-factor player, but he is consistent. their version of Green has quite a shot from outside, but he is still not an x-factor player. Patty Mills is an amazing backup to Parker but again, still not x-factor.
What I am getting at is that we dont need grab a hold of a star who is going to break the bank. Im going to tell you what I have been told my whole basketball career, which was like four years in high school so dont get excited. A cohesive team will beat a talented team any day. Our Great chemistry was what won us so many games last year, and it is what I am counting on to win us games next year. Chemistry is why the Timberwolves are a bad team and why the Spurs are a great team. I can easily see us winning five, six, seven more games next year without doing anything but playing Suns ball and staying healthy. It makes no sense to bring in someone who might ruin that.
I have confidence that Horny/McD will make the right moves this off season, but if we dont make the big move, dont worry. We already got next year on lock.
