Let's Not Jinx Anything

I'm the superstitious sort of fan.  I think all of us are a little bit (hey, at least I'm not as superstitious as Vash!!).  So let's not go and declare this series against the Lakers over yet.  Remember that the Suns were down 3-1 against the Lakers last year and somehow pulled out three wins against the Lakers to move to the second round.

And same thing goes for the Mavericks.  I'm not counting them down until they're out.  It sounds like their fans - and even Dirk - aren't giving them much hope but if they can win two games in a row, it's anyone's series.

I am just as excited as the next guy.  But I'm not looking ahead to a Spurs/Nuggets matchup just yet.  Then again, I know I'm superstitious.  I wear the same shirt, sit in the same seat and hold the remote the same way for every game in the playoffs.  So far, the only game the Suns have lost is when I went to my Dad's house for a game.  I won't be doing that again anytime soon!! (Sorry, Dad). :-)

What do you think about jinxes?

I believe
Dan,

Since you gave me the  honor of being mentioned as superstitious (and I agree), I will just say this.

It is better to be superstitious and be pleasantly surprised than be overconfident and be disappointed.

I still think the Mavs can win this series. All it's going to take is winning the next game in Dallas. That's not hard to do. The momentum will shift at that point.

I think there is less hope for Denver if they go down 1-3 to the Spurs.

To avoid a jinx, I will refrain from making a prediction for the Suns. :)  I will just say that the Suns came back from down 1-3 last year, so it CAN happen again for the Lakers although the probability may be a little different (see, I am not saying higher or lower....just avoiding the jinx).

I had seriously wondered during game 1 if I should just sell all the upper level tickets I have for the playoffs because up to that point every time I sat in the upper level, the Suns had lost. I am going to use the lower level tickets I have for half of the games. No problem there, since the Suns have already won many home games that I attended sitting in the lower level.

I don't have a specific shirt or other things to wear for the playoffs. However, last year I wore a white #13 t-shirt to the elimination game. Fortunately I cannot find it, so there is no danger of my wearing it this time.

Agreed
The Suns of 2006 crawled out of their 1-3 hole because of a special set of circumstances. Last year's Suns had dealt with major adversity all season, thanks to Amare and KT's injuries, and they had developed an intensely tight bond around the common interest to prove everyone wrong. They had also showed regular season dominance over the Lakers (so getting down in the series was kind of a surprise to begin with), and they lost Game 4 in such a painful, inexplicable way that it helped ignite a fire under them that carried them through that series and two other rounds as well. Lastly, the 2006 Suns (like now) were led by a guy whose motto is to always keep a positive attitude and give yourself a chance to win. I'm not sure any of this applies to either the Mavericks or the Lakers. The Mavericks haven't dealt with adversity all year, so now that it's smacked them in the face, they have that deer-in-headlights look about them. The Lakers have dealt with injury-related adversity all season, but unlike last year's Suns, they failed to use it as motivation to rise to the challenge and prove everyone wrong. Neither team seems to be as close-knit as the Suns (this especially applies to the Lakers), so they don't have the same kind of "we don't want the season to end because we like playing together" emotions that last year's Suns used as even more extra fuel.

That said, Dan's right. Neither series is over, and either of these seemingly down-and-out teams could buckle down and focus on winning one game at a time to get themselves back in it. It's happened before, so anything is possible. But at least with what we've seen to date, neither the Mavericks or Lakers seem to have the same kind of "heart" last year's Suns had.

Sunday Afternoon.
On Sunday Afternoon:
I'm on the left side of the couch, Fiancee is on the right, dog's sitting next to me on the floor, being petted. Suns up, playing great. Fiancee gets up to go get water. Lakers go on a run. Fiancee comes, back, sits down, Nash hits a three.

Later, Suns push it up again. Fiancee gets up to feed the cat. Lakers go on a run again. She comes back, Suns push ahead again.

5 minutes left in the 4th quarter. She starts to get up, to go upstairs. I grab her arm.

"Don't."

"Why not?"

Looks at TV, back at her

"Um... because I love you so much, I want to spend time with you, just for a few more minutes."

"Awww...thanks! That's..."

(pause)

"You're doing this because the Suns start to lose whenever I get up, aren't you?"

"They also start to lose when you talk, but I wasn't going to say anything about that."

Karma not jinxes
Getting back to the question Dan asked, I believe in karma not jinxes. As in, I think bad things happen when people start gloating (see Mark Cuban and his "we're in the finals and Steve Nash isn't" comments from last season just prior to the Mavericks finals choke-job). So I suggest everyone stay off of Lakers and Mavericks message boards. No gloating. No rubbing it in. Let's just enjoy watching our team do great things.

I agree completely
It's scaring me that the Warriors fans are taking over Mavs Moneyball.  I'm glad we're all a bit superstitious over here.  It just seems the Warriors are jinxing themselves by going over to the Mavs boards and ripping on their fans.  If you're going to do it, at least wait until it's completely over! :-)

Actually, I just went there myself
But I made a "nice" post, not a gloating one. (At least I hope they see it that way...).

was it me or am I alone in this.....?
Was watching the game waiting for the Lakers to come back (cuz lets face it....once we get a lead it almost always happens), and I was waiting....waiting....waiting....final buzzer...we never let them back.  I had to look at the score again to make sure it just wasn't the end of the 3rd.  Without jinxing anything....have the Suns finally learned how to finish?  Lord I hope so.

Hey Dan
Please mark off game #14. Don't jinx the team by refusing to acknowledge yesterday's win. :)

Dirk's Comments
I don't normally like to be negative but I can't help but bag on Dirk for his comments (if I heard things wrong please correct me). I did not hear what Dirk said exactly but in watching TNT last night Barkley mentioned that Dirk said that if they lost game 4 then they would lose the series. Any player who bags his current team like that, whatever his intentions were, has got to be a complete loser! I hope that Dirk gets ripped by his teammates and coach for what he said. He should be a leader and motivation to the team not a psychic. Anyway I hope that the Warriors kick it in to high gear and close out this series with a 4th win, so that Dirk can retire as "Madam Loser".

My opinion regarding jinxes
Jinxes don't exist.  They're a manifestation of the ego to satisfy the fear in the id.

(whoa...never took one psych class)

Give me a break!!!
Dan, I think you need to remove this link from the left sidebar news section if you have access to do it. Shawn Marion accepts what may be the biggest snub of his career more graciously than he ever has before, and then this bozo writes this:
"It's all right,'' Marion said. "I'm just going to keep doing what I do."

Which means more grousing about being underappreciated. Wouldn't be surprised for the annual Marion trade rumors to crop up, and possibly even Matrix requesting a deal. Like Joe Johnson before him, Marion wants to be The Man. Would Bryan Colangelo try to reunite with him in Toronto? Or maybe the Grizzlies, if they go after Suns assistant Marc Iavaroni for their head coaching job?

I realize this guy is just a blogger, not a real sportswriter, but come on! How did something like this even make the sidebar in the first place?

by TexSUN on May 1, 2007 9:50 AM MST reply actions

Marion
From AZCentral.com:

The Suns still have never had a frontcourt player named to the All-Defensive first team. Marion, peeved mightily by previous snubs, took this one well and looked at it as further motivation.

"Of course, it's tough," said Marion, who did receive five first-team votes. "We've got a lot of great forwards in this league. We do a lot of things. I'm still going to go out there and do what I do."

That doesn't sound like grousing to me and it sounds like Marion is used to not getting enough recognition when it comes to awards.  I think he knows that the fans certainly appreciate what he does. I know I do!!!

by TwinnerA on May 1, 2007 10:57 AM MST reply actions

Exactly my point.
I thought Shawn took this obvious snub VERY well. The way the media likes to jump on him anytime he complains, you KNOW if he had grumbled about it AT ALL it would have been printed by every writer on AZCentral. Instead, they just quoted the line you mentioned. So that tells me he was plenty gracious about it (a lot more than he needed to be, honestly--this is one of the few times I think he may have even been justified to complain a little, although I'm very glad he didn't).

by TexSUN on May 1, 2007 11:05 AM MST up reply actions

on marion
There is the media thing to think about. When I see Marion around the other players, I don't see him complaining. He just kind of goes in spurts of really great, to making a mistake, which Nash, and everyone else does.

What I mean about the media thing, my guess is if Marion said one or two things about not being appreciated months back, reporters bring it up now even though it was months ago. Look at the book seven seconds or less which the media tried to bring up. My view, Marion is handling the snub very well and the real test of who is a better defender will be against the Spurs (once we get there).

The 82games article posted here recently really shows how much Marion does, and I personally want to hear from coaches why they didn't pick Marion.
I think part of it is just what Bell was saying, it's about the playoffs and recognition, which Bell got nationally going against Kobe last year and this. I think it's also very tough for Marion to get credit for shutting down another player, because we use him on pretty much everyone on the other team. It's amazing actually what he does, and it's a shame he didn't get the recognition again. But, he should take some satisfaction from being number 4 in the fans view. Also, I think the Suns are known for their offense, hence the mvp awards, 6th man awards, etc. But the Spurs are known for their defense, hence Duncan and Bowen being named to the all defense teams. But Duncan and Bowen are slowing down in my opinion and I think this playoff series will show that. Unless Ginobili becomes mr. 50pt offense against us, I think we should do fine against them, my guess 7 game series.

by jasonsuns1 on May 1, 2007 11:26 AM MST reply actions

Reputation
I think a part of the snub may have come from reputation- not of Marion but of those who placed higher than him. It is hard to ignore the likes of Kevin Garnett, who can single handedly impact a game. The Suns are more team oriented, and Marion does multiple things as a player. That is harder than just being a defensive player.

From all the comments I read about Marion's reaction to the snub, he handled it extremely well. I wonder if his self promotion earlier in the season was a factor, but as Marion himself said, there are a lot of great forwards in this league, so it is hard to make the team.

I am very happy for Raja though. I think defending against Kobe has its rewards. It gave him the visibility and the respect needed to make the all defensive team. He has been gracious and humble about it.
