Don't look now, but if the playoffs began today, the Spurs would be the #6 seed!

Potential changes:  The Lakers and Spurs could swap places if the Spurs beat Phoenix and LA loses to the Pistons.  Dallas swaps places with the Hornets if they beat Boston.  Hornets take over 1st if Phoenix loses to the Spurs.

  1.  Suns     33-13
  2.  Hornets  32-13
  3.  Mavs      31-13
  4.   Jazz     28-18
  5.   Lakers   28-15
  6.   Spurs    28-16
  7.   Warriors 28-19
  8.   Nuggets 27-18
GSW has jumped over the Blazers.  In my opinion, the Blazers wither down the stretch. Change is the order of the day.

Here are the current East playoff teams:

  1. Celtics  35-8
  2. Pistons  32-13
  3. Magic    29-18
  4. Cavs     25-19
  5. Raptors  25-20
  6. Wizards  24-20
  7.  Hawks    18-24
  8.  Nets     19-26
The first 2 teams appear to be set, but the order of teams 3-6 will constantly change.  Spots 7 and 8 will go to the team that gets hot at the end from this group:
Atlanta
Indiana
New Jersey
Charlotte
Milwaukee
Philadelphia
New York (no joke - only 5 games behind Nets)

That should be an interesting race.  At this point, only Miami is out of it.

Update
Yeah, I know.  But it'd kind of fun.  I'm a statistics guy.  I was memorizing batting averages and winning percentages when I was 8 years old.  I remember a couple of whole seasons where I kept score (every game) via Vin Scully's descriptions of Dodger games as I grew up in Scottsdale.

Plus it gives you a unique perspective.  for instance, look at my thread lead-in.  After last night, it helps to read that again so I don't commit Hari-Kiri.

Wow this would be nice
Sure would be nice to get the Nugs in the first round and see the Lakers and Mavs go at it as well as the Hornets/Warriors. Even the Spurs/Jazz could be difficult for SA w/ rematch grudge factor and a much less effective Spurs front line this year.

One can only hope it turns out this way.

seedings
It's going to change daily.  If you look at past sports champions, you have to realize that more than half are determine to a arge extent by playoff seeding.  rarely do you have what just happened in the NFL, where a team took the hardest possible road and won.

2/14 update
Yesterday was a big shake-up.  Tonight promises the same, with the Suns-Mavs winner moving up.
Changes: The suns and Hornets swap places again.  The 8 team field tightens up because of Phoenix's loss to Golden state.  When Denver lost, they dropped out in favor of the streaking Rockets, who pull into a three team tie with GS and Denver, with the Warriors and Rox getting the playoff tiebreakers for the time being.

Western conference:

Hornets 36-15
Suns 36-16
Mavs 35-17
Jazz 34-19
Lakers 35-17
Spurs 34-17
Warriors 32-20
Rockets 32-20

Here are the current East playoff teams: The Hawks have fallen into a tie for the 8th spot with Philadelphia and New Jersey, but they lose the tie breaker with the other two teams, and thus fall to 9th.

Celtics 41-9
Pistons 39-13
Magic 33-21
Cavs 29-23
Raptors 28-23
Wizards 24-27
Nets 23-30
76ers 23-30

2/15 update at the break
Only one game, but it created a change.  With the loss to the Suns, the Mavs fall from 3rd to 6th behind san Antonio.  Time to panic in big D!  Maybe they'll trade half their team!  This is tempered with the knowledge that the Lakers will slip with Kobe out, or at least not do as well if he is not 100%.  All together now for Kobe and his owie:  Awwwwwww!  too bad...

Western conference:

Hornets 36-15
Suns 37-16
Lakers 35-17
Jazz 34-19
Spurs 34-17
Mavericks 35-18
Warriors 32-20
Rockets 32-20

Here are the current East playoff teams: The Hawks have fallen into a tie for the 8th spot with Philadelphia and New Jersey, but they lose the tie breaker with the other two teams, and thus fall to 9th.

Magic 33-21
Cavs 29-23
Raptors 28-23
Wizards 24-27

Phoenix - where bitter happens

2/18 update - Warriors drop out of playoffs
A slate of games after the all star break highlighted the competition for the 8th playoff spot in the respective conferences.  As amazing as it seems for Suns fans, the team that many fear Phoenix will have trouble matching up against, Golden State, actually fell out of the playoff position by virtue of their loss to Utah.  Denver showed they are still in this by smoking the Celts at the Pepsi Center, taking over the #8 spot and a matchup with New Orleans.  The Rockets kept winning, whipping the LeBrons.  A mere 4 games separate the 8 playoff teams.  Amazing.  From the East, only the Pistons and the Celtics have better records than the entire torrid West playoff field.

In the East, the Hawks still are in 9th, as both Atlanta and the Sixers lose.  The Cavs and Raptors swap places, in what shapes up to be a battle for home court in a probable 4-5 first round matchup.

Western conference:

Hornets 36-15
Suns 37-16
Lakers 36-17
Jazz 35-19
Spurs 35-17

2/21 update
Today we see another shake-up in the matchups, with the Hornets solidifying their hold on the first seed.  LA knocks the Suns to the third seed. Dallas is locked in at #6, 1.5 games ahead of their pursuers, although the Jason Kidd expirement may drop them below the hard charging Rockets.
In the East, Boston is slipping due to the Westt trip that is turning out to be more than they can handle, but their huge cushion will keep them in to top spot, since the Pistons are stumbling as well.  Both East poewers visit a rejuvenated suns team this weekend.  The Hawks still are in 9th, as the Bibby gamble hasn't paid off yet, and with the Hawks in Utah and San Antonio coming up, we don't expect them to right the ship for a while.  Philly blew the Knicks off the court, and so stays in the #8 seed.

Changes: No changes. Mavs could have moved up but botched it against Utah. Tonight, The Warriors can move up on Mavs and help the Suns' draft outlook by beating Atlanta. The Nets can put a dent in San Antonio's shiny record whilst edging away from the Hawks also. Phoenix needs a win to help their confidence, and to move into #5 ahead of the Rockets. As of now
The teams that I would perfer to face in the first round in order:

Rockets - I don't think they can win a playoff series w/o Yao. They are too young and small

Spurs - I know. The heresey. But as I have said, they don't have near the weapons that other teams do. Suddenly, we are a good matchup there

Hornets - They are VERY good but I don't believe that in their first year in the playoff's they can get it done. Watch out next year or two.

Mavs - I think they stepped back, but Dirk is still Dirk and won't want to Dirk again in the first round.

Warriors - As great as this team is, I don't believe that can really compete in the playoff's either. But they are a tough match up for us mainly b/c of their great guards Davis and Ellis. I may change my mind after Thursday's game since they haven't played Los Soles Neuvo

Jazz/Lakers - These are clearly the best two teams in the West. Both are big and rebound well. Both play good solid D. And both can kill you inside, outside and can run and penetrate the lane. We are going to have to be GREAT to beat them. I guess I would take the Jazz before the Lakers. Mainly b/c the Jazz have such a poor road record and I HATE the Lakers and everything a series against them brings.

Jazz -

He must be getting frustrated.  I saw the other day that he had 17/17 and the team lost.  And now he doesn't have Wade.  If he thinks he can get his money, he isn't staying in Miami.

Maybe he's loving it?
With Wade out, that likely means Shawn is now "the man" on the Heat for the rest of the season. This is his opportunity to carry a team, what rumor has he has always wanted. So I'm guessing he'll either (a) have the time of his life or (b) finally accept that he's really not a franchise player, and accept his place as one of the best role-players in the league if not the best. Either outcome is a good one for Shawn.

I have a feeling
We could have two upsets in the East's first round.  If Toronto falls to 6, I have a feeling they can take the Magic at 3.  Bosh, in his last game with Orlando, thoroughly outplayed Howard.  I think Van Gundy even went as far as to point this out to the media.  As far as Wizards-Cavs, the Wizards just aren't afraid of King James.  Maybe it's because their own leaders have phenomenal swag.  I also think Orlando can take Detroit and Cleveland can take Boston.  The West playoffs will be very good, but the East playoffs will hardly be the sweep fest that it was last year.

Keep it coming
No problem, anytime.  This is to spark conversation.  I'm enjoying keeping this running tally.  This is the craziest season in a long time.

BTW, what do you think of Kevin Love of UCLA in a Suns uni next year?  6'9, 255 bruiser with a soft shooting touch and passing skills to boot.

Love or another DJ?
K. Love is absolutely OK with me. I can't really decide whether he or DJ Augustin of Texas is better. Love might get in the lineup/rotation quicker but Augustin really looks like that kind of player who will always be dependable when you need a shot to tie or win. Reminds me of Agent Zero with better passing. But if K. Love is the next Bill Walton, I'll take him.

Kevin Love
He's just tough.  He is not a Big White Stiff.  I sat up and took notice when nbadraft.net compared him to Wes Unseld.  Most of this board is too young to remember Wes, but he was a master of the rebound and outlet pass, as well as a setter of bone crushing screens and an immoveable force under the boards.  At 6'7, Wes played center against the likes of Chamberlain, Thurmond, Bellamy, and Alcindor/Jabbar.

If Love is anything like Unseld, we grab him in a heartbeat.

update 3/20
Changes: The race tightens up, as 4.0 games separate the 8 qualifiers. I feel like I'm calling a horse race.

'And they're coming up on the final turn with Paul's Buzz pushing ahead by a nose. Nipping at his heels is Mamba, followed closely by the Spacemen, who are neck and neck with the Nashmobile. A length back are Bowen's Bums, the Dirk Machine, and bringing up the rear is Nellie's Stallion. Two and a half lengths out of the money is the Prospector, who was unsuccessful at keeping the Philadelphias away from his gold nuggets.'

David Stern doesn't deserve this magnificent season. Houston loses again, 1/2 game separates the top 5 as the Hornets take over the top spot. What a race! Rox tied with Phoenix for third, but Houston gets the tiebreaker. The game coming up in Phoenix is for 3rd place!

Hornets 46-21
Lakers 46-21
Rockets 46-22
Jazz 45-24
Suns 46-22
Spurs 44-23

Western Conference Matchups
From a viewing perspective, there's no such thing as a bad series in the Western Conference.  Any of the top 9 teams (I know, 8 make the playoffs, but I'm including Denver because of their bubble status) versus each other is going to make for some fun basketball viewing.  I'd throw Portland in to the mix, too, but I don't think they're quite ready to hang with the big boys just yet (Yeah, I'm looking at you, Greg Oden.).

update 3/24
New Orleans is back on top. The Suns are in third as the Rox fall to 5th over the weekend. Mavs with Dirk injury will most likely fall out of the playoffs, as GS and Denver are charging hard. GS is 1/2 game behind Big D. One game separates the top 6, so the standings could drastically alter daily.

Hornets 47-21
Lakers 48-22
Suns 47-22
Jazz 46-25
Rockets 47-23
Spurs 47-23
Mavs 44-26
Warriors 43-26

Here are the current East playoff teams: No changes. Raptors continue their free-fall, now tied with the Sixers, but with a tie-breaker. They could fall farther. Nets and Pacers tied for 9th, 1 1/2 games off the pace set by Atlanta. Portland (37-33) would be 5th in the east, but are 10th in the west. Sacramento would even make the playoffs in the woeful East.

update 3/30
The rae tightens as one game separates the top 6. The Lakers sink to third, and SA takes over 2nd. The Rockets drop to 5th because of an unusual remnant of the seeding process - the league triedto fix: The third place team in any division can never be higher than the third division leader, even if it has the better record. The Suns are in 6th because of the tie breaker with the Lakers. The Warriors drop to 9th as the red hot Nuggets take over the last spot. The Suns can knock them back with a nome-and-home sweep Monday and Tuesday.

update 3/31
The race continues to be tight with a three way tie for 7th, and a two-way tie for 5th. The Rockets drop to 6th because they lose a tie breaker to the 5th place Suns, and the Warriors are the odd man out as the Mavs are hanging on by a thread. Who would have thought the 67 win behemoth from last year would have fallen so far? The Warriors drop to 9th as the red hot Nuggets move into 7th on tie breakers. Every game is important
This close race emphasizes the importance of a single game.  For instance, consider these three games, the two Minnesota games and the Miami game, which, ironically, was one of Shaq's best of the season, at 18 and 11, to 19 and 6 for the Matrix. For you trade-watchers, if you want to see a perfect argument for the trade, take a close look at this game:

With all the commotion about the trade, if these games were wins, the suns would be sitting pretty in the top spot with a 52-21 record.  I am not even mentioning the clipper game, or the first Houston game, lost in irritating fashion before the Rox were playing well.
